some tough stuff coming in this chapter, but there's sort of a surprise, a friendship I haven't really been writing lately will have a thing in this chapter, it's been long overdue. Enjoy!
Jane sat in the interrogation room across from Jasmine Fischer, she eyed the woman. Even though she admitted to killing Dean it didn't make up for the fact that she sent both Frost and Maura to the hospital before, not to mention the people she murdered. The woman was staring Jane down not saying a word.
"So, do you plan to tell me what happened at the warehouse the night Agent Dean was shot and killed?"
She smirked at Jane, "You'd like that, wouldn't you?"
"You told me and Detective Frost what happened when we were at the location, now you have nothing to say?"
"That's right, why would I want to admit to a crime on tape when you have no proof I did anything except come into a building with crime scene tape up. I find it odd how you were involved with the incident and you get to be on the case while it's active. Doesn't that concern your boss even in the slightest. Seems like this place really is loose on it's rules."
"That really isn't any of your concern."
"But it shows the incompetence of this place," she leaned back in the chair. "I get the whole protecting your bitch thing, but breaking proper protocol is a crime in itself."
Jane had to grit her teeth before she said something that could get her into trouble.
"I want my lawyer Detective."
Jane stood up, "I will get that confession from you, even with a lawyer at your side."
"Yeah I'm sure he would love to see how this place operates. Good luck keeping your little bitch safe if you get exposed for being a dirty detective. Looks like both you and Dr. Isles will be out of a job soon enough," she smirked. "I'll wait for my lawyer to come."
She frowned at the woman before her, Jane didn't like whatever game Jasmine was playing if anyone was playing dirty it was her. All Jane wanted was justice and Maura's name to be cleared of all charges. Jane left the interrogation room and stood next to Frost. "I can't believe this Frost, we were so close to finishing this and now she wants to act like she didn't do anything."
"Do you think she's in with the Feds?"
"Why would the Feds let her in? If someone killed one of our own there would be a riot on our hands."
"I mean it is Gabriel Dean we're referring to, who actually liked that guy anyways?" Frost shrugged his shoulders. "We will get to the bottom of this, maybe I should try to go in, ease her up a bit."
Jane looked at her partner and sighed, "Do you really think that would help?"
"I got that good cop, and loyal vibe about me. It's worth a shot, right?"
"Yeah, just... be careful."
Frost smirked, "No need to worry about me. I can handle a difficult woman," he patted her on the back as he went into the interrogation room. As soon as he entered Jasmine spoke up.
"I'm not saying anything as long as Detective Rizzoli is on the case. So don't even bother."
"We don't have to talk about the case," he sat down across from her. "Do you remember who I am?"
"Yeah, you were with her in the warehouse Detective Frost."
"I was actually referring to that accident I was in where you took Doctor Isles and tortured her. Where I ended up in the hospital. The accident your brother purposely caused."
Her eyes looked at him darkening as she frowned, "My brother was helping me, I still can't believe that punk ass forgot to wear his seatbelt. At least you were smart enough to wear one I only wanted him to harm Doctor Isles, not you. Glad you didn't end up like the idiot. Her on the other hand I should have shot her when I had her, made Detective Rizzoli watch as I killed the woman she loves more than anything. But I already confessed to that when I came into questioning about those events," She looked at the glass where she knew Jane was standing in front of. "Doctor Isles will get what she deserves in the end, and so will you Detective Rizzoli."
"Threatening a detective won't look good for you on tape."
"Nothing looks good for me Detective at this point, and you do you realize that you have other friends that are listening in."
"Is that why you won't talk about what you told us at the warehouse?"
"I do not recall any conversation at the warehouse," she leaned in. "All I recall is wanting to see where my ex fiancee was murdered in cold blood and I end up being chased down and harassed by two Detectives, one of which who shouldn't be at the scene of the crime her wife committed. Doctor Isles killed Agent Dean and you have no proof that she didn't and that I did. Shame." She smirked leaning back in her chair. "You can go now, I'll wait for my lawyer."
Frost glared at her and stood up, leaning over the table, "You will go down for this, you just wait and see."
"Sounds like a threat to me," she rolled her eyes. "Good luck winning this case Detective Frost."
Frost got up and left the room, "That woman sure is a piece of work."
"She's psychotic, I swear if she gets off for this I am going to be pissed. While we wait for her lawyer I'm going to see if Frankie wants to take over looking for evidence at the warehouse."
"Jane, don't let her get to you, she's playing a very dangerous game and she will try to destroy you from the inside. She really has some sort of vendetta against you and Maura, and I don't want you getting yourselves into more trouble or putting your lives in danger. You have kids to worry about now, and keeping them safe."
"As everyone keeps on reminding me, I know what responsibilities I have, my responsibility is also making sure my wife doesn't get blamed for a death that she didn't cause," she looked through the one way mirror, glancing at the woman. Why are you doing this when you were so proud of killing Dean? Jane thought to herself before she went to go talk to Frankie.
Maura had joined Angela, Korsak and the twins for dinner, she was still trying to figure out how to let the kids know that her and Jane would be their legal gaurdians. Angela insisted that maybe Jane and Maura could tell them together, it might be easier that way and Maura agreed full heartedly. Maura was worried about Jane and the current case she was on, it's been a few hours and Jane wasn't keeping her updated, this case was heavy on Maura's mind, especially since it could make her lose the career she built a life on. Jane did text her though when she got off saying she'd be over at her mother's, figured she'd join them for dinner.
The twins were telling Maura about all the fun stuff they did with their grandparents today, she thought it was adorable how they referred to Angela and Korsak as such.
"Can we come over here when you go back to work?" Todd looked up, hopeful that Maura would say yes.
"I mean, if they don't mind, but I might not be working for a while."
"Why not?" Kate looked up from the broccoli on her plate.
Maura sighed, "Um, well, it's complicated. But it's alright Jane is trying to help do everything she can to help. She's good at what she does."
"Is that why she's not eating with us?" she asked with a frown.
"Well that could be the reason, but she promises that she'll be here soon." Maura looked at her watch. "I think I'll call her and see when she's coming." She removed herself from the table and went outside on the porch, she was not expecting to see Jane sitting there. She sat down next to her. "How long have you been sitting outside?"
Jane looked up at her wife, "Trying to wrap my head around everything," she ran a hand frustratedly through her hair. "I was so close to finishing this Maura, we had a confession when she came into the warehouse and then when we get to the station she won't tell us anything. The lawyer and Lieutenant had a discussion and agreed that I shouldn't be working on the case. You know if it was Cavanaugh he'd not show any sort of weakness, he'd have his detectives backs instead of cowering when there's conflict. Oh and because of it, I'm off the case."
Maura frowned listening to Jane's words, "Jane, I'm sorry to hear that. So you know who killed him?"
"Yeah, it was actually his fiancee, the one who kidnapped and tortured you. She was so proud of it but when we try to get her confession on tape we can't get her to talk. Apparently Dean bailed her out of jail," Jane sighed. "She's playing me, and I think the FEDS are on her side of things. I mean they tried to hide evidence and all of it, it's a lot. I've failed you Maura and there's nothing I can do to change that."
She heard the sound of disappointment in Jane's voice and she rested her hand on her leg. "Hey. You could never fail me Jane, you've done all that you could."
"I should have let you go home that night after we got to the airport, I shouldn't have made you come with me," Jane sighed.
"We're a team Jane, and we didn't know what all would happen and I wouldn't have let you go without me. We couldn't exactly let Paddy have a gun, but we both know he would have been the one who killed him without a second thought. I mean you said he took care of the man who killed Cami. There was a lot of factors in play that night. Do I wish I didn't come into the warehouse? Of course, but I wasn't thinking. I was hurt and angry hearing about Camille. I let my emotions cloud my judgment and I try not to let that happen." Maura stood up and reached out for Jane's hand. "Kate was worried about you not being here yet, did you want to come in and eat?"
Jane nodded, taking Maura's hand as she helped her up off the porch steps. Nothing was said as they went inside, Jane sat down next to the twins as Angela pushed a plate in front of her daughter, she could tell that Jane was going through a lot of emotions right now. Maura already explained to Angela when she got back before what was going on said asking Jane about it wasn't the best idea, she was glad when Angela didn't exactly bring it up.
The adults ate in silence but Kate was happy to repeat what she told Maura about what they did. Jane listened to the girl and was glad that she was talking again. She stopped and scrunched her nose when she noticed Jane wasn't really eating. "Mama always said that you should eat your vegetables."
Jane turned to her and offered her a warm smile, "Your mother was right, I'm just not feeling well."
At those words Kate got up from her chair and rushed to the kitchen to grab something from the fridge before walking back. "Here," she beamed, sliding Jane a can of ginger ale. "This will help settle your stomach."
Jane glanced at the younger girl and smirked, "Looks like you got your mother's smarts," she opened the soda, and just to please Kate she drank some.
"I just want to help out, since you are helping me and Todd," Kate shoveled the rest of the broccoli in her mouth. "Can we go watch tv now?" she asked and Todd perked up.
"Well since you ate your whole meal I don't see why not," Angela told the four year olds, as they rushed to the living room.
"You know, sometimes I wish that I could be that small again, not quite aware of what's going on in this crazy world. I miss that feeling on innocence." Jane pushed herself away from the table, taking her and Maura's plate to the kitchen.
"Life has been really rough the past couple of years for you Jane," Korsak mentioned, as he got up to help.
"Yeah, at least you're retired now, I'm not sure how you did your job as long as you have sometimes. I'm starting to question my choice in career right about now," she sighed.
"You're great at what you do Jane, trust me, you'll power through it, I know you will," Korsak responded as they got to the kitchen sink.
"Possibly, it's just that ever since I've gotten home from Paris I've been feeling nothing but pain and exhaustion, this was not how things were supposed to go. I'm supposed to be still in this honeymoon phase with Maura and I can't even enjoy that," she gripped the counter. "I'm tired of all this danger involved in our lives. I can't work this case because Maura was involved and I was as well, the suspect got off because we had no substantial proof that she killed Gabriel, but she confessed to me and Frost except when we went back to the station. She's playing mind games and... it's just a lot. Not to mention having to be guardians to two kids, when their mother had no reason to die. Sometimes I feel like I'm taking on too much, but how can a rest when Maura's career is in danger?" she closed her eyes. "In personal life Maura and me just work, but I'm always putting her into harm's way because of my job."
Korsak rested his hand on her shoulder, "You know danger could happen with or without your choice in career. Look we both know how intense our job can be, but you find justice for those murdered, and you've just hit a bit of a snag is all. You're just struggling right now, and that's okay Jane."
"I just wish we could have a normal life sometimes, that Maura could have something normal, everything just seems to be a mess for her. Even before me, she never got to experience a normal life, and she can't have one even now."
"There's no such thing as a normal life Jane, but what's normal for you both is that you love and support each other through thick and thin. You get to give that woman the love she could have only dreamed of growing up, sure there are obstacles but you know how to handle them, you guys are a team and you always will be," he gave her a smile and Jane wasn't so tense after his words.
"I can't believe you just gave me marriage advice," she stood up straight. "Thanks for the pep talk."
"You just got to look at the bigger picture, Maura wants to be involved in this crazy ass life with you, it's not like you forced her to. She's still here after all this time, what does that tell you?"
"That she's lost her mind," Jane shrugged.
"So, you know what I'm thinking?" he asked after a few silent moments as he filled up the dishwasher with the dirty dishes.
"Do I even want to know?"
Korsak looked at the kids in the living room, "The twins wouldn't mind having a sleepover at our place, let you and Maura get some time alone, I hate the thought you had to cut that honeymoon stage of your marriage short. Angela wouldn't mind, you know they called us grandma and grandpa today, it brought tears to your mother's eyes. We both know how much she's wanted grandchildren."
Jane rolled her eyes, "Yeah, she's mentioned it for so many years now. Maybe she'll stop asking my brothers and I about it. Camille was like another daughter to her so it makes sense, she finally got two things she wanted. A doctor for me to marry and grandkids. You'd really watch the kids?"
"Of course, plus don't think I don't remember you offering to watch your baby brother when me and your mother want to go out. I'll end up owing you anyways."
She smiled, "I'd like that, but I think I want to spend more time with the twins for a bit, I've hardly done it since being back. The offer is for whenever, right?"
"Yeah, the kids really look up to you, you know that?"
"I'm not exactly the best role model for kids."
"You're tough Jane, if that's not a role model, I don't know what is," he smirked, "We should get back to our wives and the twins," Korsak closed the dishwasher and pushed the button to start it, he shook his head when Jane was already in the living room snuggling up to Maura.
Jane and Maura spent longer at Angela and Korsak's than they thought they would, both twins were passed out and they had to carry them to the car, "These kids weigh a ton."
"That's not very possible Jane, maybe they weigh about 40 pounds. They call it dead weight, it happens when kids fall asleep," Maura placed Todd in his seat. Jane was done buckling Kate in, watching her head bob to the side. She ran a hand through her hair before gently closing the door.
"I think you need a bigger car if you're going to transport the kids," Jane mentioned after Maura closed Todd's door.
"We could always switch vehicles, you know it'll be easier putting them in your car than mine."
"You know I don't like driving your car Maura, it's uncomfortable," Jane frowned.
"Well then this will just have to do," Maura placed her hand on Jane's cheek, leaning up to press a kiss against her lips. "I'll see you at home."
Jane grabbed Maura by the hand, getting a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach. "I, maybe we should go together, in the same car," she bit her lip as she looked around.
"Jane, what's the matter?" she asked, looking up at her with concerned eyes.
"I just... it's just something I remember that woman said in the interrogation room, when Frost was in there after I tried talking to her. She said that you will get what you deserve in the end, and so will I. I think it's best if we stick together. I'll just pick my car up later," Jane looked over her shoulder. "I rather be uncomfortable in your car then leave you three by yourselves," she grabbed the keys from Maura's hand. "I'll drive," she spoke softly before sliding into the driver's side, she started the car and gripped at the steering wheel.
"Should I be worried about the well being of the twins?"
Jane shook her head, "Honestly Maura, I'm not sure. God, Frost is right, she is trying to destroy me from the inside," she sighed before she drove to their house, being completely aware of the surroundings on the outside, making sure they weren't being trailed. Maura kept her hand rested on Jane's thigh to comfort her the best that she could the entire car ride home. When they arrived Jane left a short text message for her mother letting her know she was going to leave her car in their driveway so she wouldn't look outside and be concerned about her car still at her house.
They entered the house and seen Tommy on the couch his eyes closed and beer in his hand. Maura frowned looking at the Rizzoli, "I forgot I told him I'd be home earlier to discuss the guest house."
Jane eyed her brother, "Did he mess up the whole plumbing thing? I seen him arrive before I went back to work."
"He had to shut off the water because there was a high chance that the place would flood and something about the shower holding water behind the something... I never had time to research what exactly he told me," she shrugged. "I'll wake him once we put the kids to bed," she held onto Todd and Jane carried Kate to the bedroom. They pulled off their shoes and tucked them under the covers.
"You do realize they'll just end up in our bed, right?" Jane spoke after they left the bedroom and closed the door.
"Jane, they have to realize at some point that they can't always sleep in our bed, what if we aren't, you know..."
"Aren't actually sleeping?" she raised her brow.
"I was going to say what if we aren't decent. You know when I snuggled in my parents' bed when I was younger they told me, adults needs to sleep alone sometimes and they won't always be available for me in my time of need."
"Sounds like a pretty harsh thing to say, I never slept in my parents' bed, I always thought that was an odd thing to do."
"You've always been so tough, haven't you?" Maura smirked. "Your parents never snuggled you if you had a nightmare, did they? I bet you never had nightmares."
"Everyone has nightmares growing up. Mine was that one of my brothers kept trying to kill me, most of the time it was Tommy doing the killing, I always was paranoid."
"That could explain the whole complexity of the relationship you share with your brother," Maura pointed out. "Does he know you had those nightmares?"
"Well not exactly, I didn't think it was important to discuss with him."
"Well it was important enough if it had you paranoid in your younger years," Maura suggested as they went downstairs to wake up said brother.
Tommy groaned, stretching and opening his eyes, "What time is it?"
"8 o' clock in the evening," Jane sat down next to him. "So, how much is Maura's guest house bathroom fudged up?" she asked, trying to start not using profanity so much, it was odd.
"It's not messed up, and it's not like I did anything wrong. There's just things I need to do before the problem becomes way worse," Tommy sat up and told them what he told Cailin about the bathroom earlier. "I could have it done in a couple of days, but until then Cailin is going to need access to your main house. I do think you should remodel the bathroom anyways Maura, I got some ideas I wanted to discuss with you. Do you mind if I borrow Maura for a moment Jane?"
Jane shook her head, "No not at all. Will you be alright down here you two?"
"I assure you Jane it's fine. You really should get some rest. I'll be up as soon as I can," Maura smiled and Jane nodded, turning to her brother.
"Please don't take up too much of my wife's time Tommy," Jane gave him an I'm watching you hand gesture before heading upstairs.
"Is Jane alright?" he asked in concern.
"Just a rough case she was working on, nothing she can't handle," Maura told him as they started talking about the guest house bathroom.
Jane got ready for bed and was about to lay down when her phone went off, she noticed the number and picked up right away. "Detective Rizzoli."
"Jane, it's Paddy. I was hearing about Maura maybe losing her medical license."
"How'd you hear about that?" she asked, she sat up straight and she felt tense.
"News travels fast with the inmates here, they were saying they were proud of my daughter and hope she doesn't get locked up. And I was curious so the gaurd told me what was happening, but that's not why I'm calling. I may know who's trying to get Maura to take the blame. Does the name Jasmine Fischer sound familiar?"
"Yeah, of course it does."
"When I heard that name I knew it sounded familiar, before I escaped prison I was receiving letters from her, saying she was a huge fan of my work. She was very, specific, about things she had in mind for torture and such. Last I heard she was in jail for kidnapping Maura previously and murdering those women, I had no idea she got out of jail, until she sent me some mail today."
"What kind of mail?" Jane didn't like where this was heading.
"Let's just say that there's a huge possibility that Maura's career isn't the only thing in harm's way. I needed to warn you, she's more dangerous and devious than I am." Paddy responded. "I have to go, I'll try to send you what she sent me. Goodbye Jane," he hung up before she could respond.
Jane dialed Frankie's number, "Frankie, we need to discuss a new development on the Maura case."
"Um, not over the phone I hope. I don't trust this shit to not be bugged right now. I am at the Dirty Robber, but I can come over."
"Okay, is Frost with you?"
"Yeah he is, we'll be over right away."
"Thanks and Frankie, just be careful driving over."
"I will Jane, see you soon," he replied and hung up. Just as the phone call ended she received a text from Paddy's phone, she didn't even care to know how he was able to use his cell phone, she was more focused on what she was looking at.
It was a hand written note a poem of sorts, the first letter of each line was in a bold red letter, Jane noticed almost immediately that it spelled out Maura's as good as dead. Paddy also wrote a message to go with it, letting her know when he opened the letter he could smell blood. "She's fuckin' psychotic," Jane got up to go downstairs to check on Maura, she noticed that Tommy was no longer there. Maura was on the couch drinking some wine. "Maura, I thought you were coming up after he left," Jane sat down next to her, Maura looked up and frowned.
"Jane, you look pale, what's wrong? You're not feeling well, are you?" she rested her hand on Jane's forehead. "You don't feel feverish."
Jane grabbed Maura's hand letting it rest of her lap, "Paddy called me just now, he's heard all about the case and he received some mail from Jasmine Fischer. It's not good at all, he sent me an image of what it said."
"Can I read it?" Maura asked and Jane looked into her eyes.
"I don't think that you should, it was hard enough for me to read."
"Jane, I know you want to protect me, but I should at least know all of what's going on, being left in the dark is just as bad as someone who is trying to destroy my future."
Jane sighed, she was right, she didn't want Maura to be in the dark about this, she was just as involved as Jane was. Jane took the phone from her pocket and slid it to Maura.
Maura glanced down at Jane's phone screen and read the words that were written, she felt her own stomach churn reading what Jasmine wrote planning to do to her. There was even a cartoon drawn on the bottom, she gave the phone back to Jane. "Do you really think she's capable of doing this?" she asked, in a whisper, as almost afraid to speak. Jane scooted closer to her and wrapped an arm around her.
"I don't know and I really don't plan to find out," she held her tight, both of them jumping moments later when there was a soft knock on the door. "I think that's Frost and Frankie," Jane got up and retrieving her gun from the lock box holding it to her side just as a precaution. She glanced slightly through the window and lowered her gun and she opened the door. She let them come in and she quickly closed and locked the door.
"Jane, what's going on?" Frankie asked, glancing over at Maura who looked pale, he could remember the last time she looked that pale and that was when she came to the crime scene and seen a woman with a resemblance to Jane. "Is Maura alright?"
Jane shook her head, "No, neither of us are alright. Paddy sent me a text of what he got mailed to his cell earlier," she put her gun away and went to get her phone, opening up the message and letting Frost and Frankie read it. Jane went back to her position on the couch next to Maura.
"What the fuck?" Frankie spoke after looking it over, Frost was looking like he was going to puke or his legs were about to give out. He walked over to hand Jane her phone back and sat on the other side of Maura. "I'll do anything I possibly can to make sure you both stay safe." He frowned, he didn't like people messing with his family, especially when it came to Maura and Jane. "There is no way in hell I'm going to let this woman destroy either of you."
Frost finally found it in himself to finally move as he sat down on the recliner, feeling a little woozy. "I can even stay here if you guys need to help with anything. We should probably devise a plan."
Jane frowned at his words, "Let's just hope what we plan goes better than the last plan I had gone with."
"We won't let her get to you, either of you, I can promise you that," Frankie gave Maura's hand a reassuring squeeze. What they were saying didn't make Maura or Jane feel better, not even in the slightest.
The silence filled the whole house and the sound of Maura's phone ringing had everyone on edge. Maura looked at the number, it was unlisted, she reached to answer it, and Jane grabbed her by the hand. "Are you sure that's a good idea?"
"Jane, I can't be afraid of every unlisted phone call I get," she got up from the couch and picked up her phone, she instantly regretted it as she heard a voice she hoped she'd never have to hear again.
"Maura Isles, or should I call you Rizzoli-Isles now? Enjoy my little poem, sorry if it didn't rhyme, but not all poems have to I assume."
"What do you want and how do you know I read a poem?" she tensed up and Jane stood up beside her.
"Tracking phones is easy when you have a friend in the FBI, I know your daddy sent it to Jane, he really should have kept it to himself. Anyways, I don't have to answer the question, you already know what I want. You see Maura, I should have just shot you in the warehouse instead of Gabriel, but he deserved it. You losing your life didn't seem important at the moment. He was going to try and bring you down to your demise but I thought that if anyone should tear you apart it should be me, and I plan to do just that. You're quite skilled at anatomy so you know just how it can be done. You'll be rotting in the ground soon enough, I'll keep in touch, you can't stay protected forever."
Jane grabbed the phone from Maura's hand hearing everything she told Maura. Jane was about to give the woman some words of her own when the line was disconnected. "She's not going to get away with this Maura, I swear to God. That psychotic bitch is going down."
Told you some tough stuff was coming, Jane is about to lose her shit. Between all the crazy I hope you liked the Korsak/Jane convo I included in this. I often miss writing their friendship so I throw some stuff in there every now and again.
