A/N: Prompt by /jin589 and can be found at the bottom of this shot. This is the second part of the 2 suggestions. Thank you so much again Jinette! Hope you enjoy this one as much as the first two!
The fear inside her is easy to find. She's jumped down that rabbit hole once again with no thought whatsoever that she might not make it out this time. As she thinks about it all the feelings are coming straight back. The pain from losing her mother, the pain of not solving the case that first time. The pain of not solving it the second or third or fourth time. When her dad had begged her to stop, that solving her mother's death wasn't worth losing her, she'd understood she had a problem. Much like alcoholism she was in deep and needed therapy in order to let the case go. Castle had brought it right back up when he told her he'd started looking into it and she'd been so mad because she just knew it was only a matter of time before she was back at digging that freaking rabbit hole again. It had taken a year or two but then she'd been there, digging. Difference was she had Castle by her side, digging with her. Then he'd wanted her to back down.
And she'd felt so much pain learning he had a part of it all. At least the holding her back part, the trying to keep her safe part. All because he loved her and couldn't stand losing her. Yet she'd only heard the betrayal, could only feel the betrayal. For a few seconds there she wanted to hate him. But then, hanging off that roof, thinking it was the end, all she could think about were all the things she didn't do. All the things she didn't tell him. Hanging off that roof she was so angry with herself for pushing him away, for not giving into him sooner, for not kissing him when she had the chance, for not telling him she loved him more than anything and it scared the hell out of her. And then, when someone had called her name she could swear to god it sounded like him. Only to be pulled up by Ryan and feeling the disappointment, because he hadn't come for her like he usually did. He truly had given up on her. And that killed her more than not solving the case.
"Kate?"
Kate looks away from the lights of the city underneath the window and sees her partner yawn from the doorway.
"What are you doing up?" he asks and walks closer to her. "Something wrong?" he suddenly asks with worry in his voice.
That's when she realizes she must've been crying because her cheeks are wet. Drying her tears quickly she shakes her head.
"Just thinking too much," she tells him as he sits down in front of her.
He holds out his hand and she takes it, feeling his thumb caress the back of her hand in such a loving way that she lets out a shaky breath.
"About what?"
She shrugs her shoulders, putting down her legs in order to make it easier for them to see each other. "About the past, my mom's case, you and me. If I would've just gotten my walls down faster it could've been us sooner."
He shakes his head and she eyes him with curiosity. "I like our story. It's long and definitely not ending any time soon. Think of what a great story to tell our kids."
She widens her eyes before narrowing them. "Our kids?"
His cheeks turn red and she chuckles.
"I think kids would be bored with such a long story like ours," she tells him and he smiles.
"I'm a writer, Kate, I can make a long story short," he says with confidence and she laughs.
"Since when?"
He gives her a look and stands up, pulling her up with him.
"Touché. Ready to go back to bed?" he pulls her closer, and she can't help but stand on her toes to kiss his lips real quick.
"Yeah," she says and right before he's about to pull her with him she stops him and hugs him. "I love you Rick."
He hugs her tighter and mumbles his love back through her hair. For some reason she's more at ease now than she was when she woke up from the bad dream. She has a feeling it's thanks to him, his scent and hugs are something special. Going to sleep with his arms all around her feels so much better, safe even. And yeah, their story was long but she had no doubt it would be longer. Something she is looking forward to.
