Chapter 1

The Beginning

Oak snored loudly on the other side of the room from me. I shifted my weight to the right side of me. Hopefully, this is comfy enough so I can fall asleep. My mind was so active, just thinking, thinking, thinking, all the time when I was about to sleep. Argh! Why can't I just sleep?! Is it really that hard? No. I just have to wait until I fall asleep. I stayed like that for a few minutes. Then my mind began to drift, drift away into the abyss of sleep, slipping away…

I dozed off until right before dawn, when I woke with a start. Why do I feel awake? I cracked my eyes open ever so slightly to look around the cave. Still dark, huh? Why do I feel an urge to leave the cave now? All I wanted to do was sleep in today, its not like I have any classes on a weekend. Ugh, something still feels… off. I opened my eyes wider and looked around the cave for anything missing or out of place. Hmmm… Nothing appears to be off. Perhaps I need fresh air and an early start instead, maybe that's what I need. I quietly got up from my bedding as to not disturb Oak and Aster whom were sleeping peacefully in their bedding. I silently walked to the entrance without making a sound.

I swept through the entrance and out into the hall with Living Caves lining the walls. I looked around the hall as I headed towards the massive doors exiting out into the open world. The ceiling is so high and so grand, it's always amazing to look at the artwork of this academy, so intriguing. The arch on the ceiling up there and the intricate carvings and decorations lining the walls, so cool to look at. I was nearing the end of the hall and towards the massive doors leading to the outside. I looked up and down the door's intricate carvings and pieces that made a beautiful piece of artwork of a dragon standing on its hind legs, about to take flight. I then focused my attention on the doors and pushed it just enough so there was a wide enough gap that I could get through.

I walked out onto the landing pad and sat down on the cobblestone platform. Gazing at the night sky above. So beautiful, I wonder if there are worlds up there, like this one. The three moons and stars were beginning to quickly fade away, and the sun was soon to rise above the horizon. I sat there, waiting and watching, breathing in the fresh air and taking in the waking noises of the birds around me from some nearby trees. So peaceful, so serene, so very-, wait, what is that in the sky over there? I peered to a particular section of the sky, it appeared to be moving, as if a dragon was flapping its wings. It blended in with the background of the starry sky, but with the stars quickly fading away, it became clearer and clearer that something was there, in the sky, just hovering there.

I quickly took flight to investigate what I was seeing. I got closer and closer to the figure when they suddenly became aware of me heading towards them and they turned to look at me. As I approached closer, I could see that their expression was confused and lost. "Hey, you need some help?" I asked the dragoness. She looked at me, more confused, as if not understanding what I had just said.

She then growled something that I couldn't understand, it sounded like "Name see I what talons pear?" Which didn't make any sense at all. Then she did say something I understood, "Where am I and who are you?" she asked, looking at me curiously now. "Uhhh, firstly, what did you say before that?" I then asked her. "What? I asked the same question twice and you said something that I couldn't understand." She replied, looking confused again. "Ok, ok, lets land under that oak tree down there and figure this out before I'm seen," I told her while pointing down towards a large tree. She gave me another curious look before we glided back towards the oak tree near the landing platform and sat down near a bush.

"So, who are you hiding from?" She asked me. "What? Oh, I'm trying to avoid a student called Fir, picks on me a lot and is usually up early, prowling around the academy, but enough about me, who are you and where you from?" I then asked her. As I finished asking my question, the sun made first light above the horizon, and I could now see this dragoness had black scales and star-like wings and a silver horn ring on her right horn. "I'm Starnight, and I'm from the jungle with my tribe the Nightwings," She said plainly. "Also, why are your scales green? Are you a Leafwing?" She asked me. "I'm a Grasseus from the Naturalings Kingdom, and my name is Prairie," I replied back to her. "I also don't know what a 'Leafwing' or a 'Nightwing' is," I mentioned.

Something seemed to dawn on her since her face turned to shock, and then she exclaimed, "Oh, oh no, I'm not on Pyrrhia anymore!" She looked around in a haste. "Wait, Pyrrhia? I haven't heard of a place called Pyrrhia anywhere on Pnauma." I told her. She looked at me, worriedly. "Pnauma? Is that a continent or something?" She asked me, all the while staring at me for an answer. "Uhh, yes?" I replied to her, weakly, confused by her frenzy. "I have to go, uh, nice meeting you! Bye!" she told me, hurriedly, and about to take flight. What? Where are you going? I then realized that she wasn't from Pnauma or anywhere on it, but rather a distant place. Wait, I have to warn you first! I quickly got to my paws and grabbed her by the shoulder. "Wait!" I told her. She looked back at me, brushing me off. "You came from somewhere else not on Pnauma? Yes?" I quickly asked her. She looked at me for a few seconds, and then she replied, "Yes."

"So just wait! I think I understand now." I told her. Please don't go out there yet. She looked at me, seemingly looking like she was waiting for me to explain. "If you're from a different place, like a continent, and if the authorities from Pnauma capture you, since they will try to if they know you're here, they will lock you up and who knows what experiments they will do to you!" I said to her, quickly. She turned back towards the sky, as if conflicting on what to do, and then she folded her wings again and sat down once more. "Explain these 'Authorities' to me," she said, still looking as if conflicted. Then she was looking at me, intently, expecting an answer. I settled myself back down, near the bush. "So, the authorities are like our people who tell us what do, they lay rules and guidelines down, and here on Pnauma, they don't like hybrids, and based off that information, I would assume different dragon species not found on Pnauma would be taken into experimentation and testing, or worse, death, for being the different one," I explained to her. "Just, if and when you go back out there, looking for your way home, just be wary," I told her.

She looked into the sky, seemingly thinking. I waited for her reply, and by this time, it was early morning with good light and dragons could be heard milling about inside the hall. She also seemed to hear the other dragons starting to wake and said, "Thanks for the warning, I'm going to try to find the portal again so I can go home," she told me. She got up to leave again and was about to take flight once more. Wait, a portal? A mysterious, ancient device?! That's something I want to see! But, I also have this strange feeling, as if-… as if I don't want her to leave? Hmm, it's probably because she's from a different world, I could learn so much more from her about her world! "Hey, can I come with? I don't have anything going on today and a mysterious, ancient portal device sounds really interesting, and I also could help you navigate the land," I asked and explained to her. She looked back at me, thinking, and then finally answering, "Sure, it could be helpful to have someone who knows the land and could help me get home, and let's hurry, based off of your information, I would rather get away from this building full of dragons."

We were flying for a few hours, over the forestry and near the mountains. Hmm, so the portal is in a cave under one of these mountains apparently. I looked at the mountain range, trying to guess which one it could be. We are nearing the border between he Naturalings and the Mountus's kingdoms. I quickly looked around to see if any other dragons were nearby, but it looked as if it was just us two for miles around. Starnight then turned to the right towards a large mountain with a snow peak, and then we began our descent. We landed in a clearing at the foot of a mountain. "Follow me, the cave entrance should be through these trees, this way," She told me and began running through the trees, towards the mountain. She had a head start from me and was now ahead of me. All of a sudden, she stopped on the top of a ridge and laid down, pressing herself against the forest floor. I caught up to her and asked, "Hey, why did you-." There were dragons in armor and equipped with weapons and dragon's protective coats all over the entrance of the cave. "Get down before they spot you!" She told me. I pressed myself against the forest floor and tried to blend in.

Some of the dragons looked like researchers and like the dragons you see at laboratories, wearing masks and goggles to shield themselves from whatever might be dangerous to them, while the others looked more like guards in black, clad armor. They had all sorts of equipment around the cave and had set up lanterns and other equipment leading into the cave. "Are these your 'Authorities'?" She whispered to me. "Yea, they have the emblems of the Naturalings Authorities on their armor and coats," I whispered back. Well, this isn't good, not only she can't go home, but I also can't go see the portal now. "Hey, do you think we should go-," I started asking her, but then she cut me off. "Shhh, look," She whispered to me while gesturing towards the cave entrance.

A dragon in white colored armor and a metal mask was walking out of the cave with one of those scientist dragons, they got close enough to us where we could hear their conversation. "So, nearby dragons reported a bright flash from this area, and saw a dragon flying from here?" The dark green dragon in white colored armor and mask asked. "Yes, some report a blackish dragon, seemingly blending in with the night sky," the scientist dragon mentioned. "Hmm, we need to find this dragon immediately, interrogation and experimentation when we find them," said the dragon in white armor by the scientist. The dark dragon in white armor began looking around, as if searching for something, finally landing their eyes on where we were hiding. I stared back, my heart beginning to pace. Oh no, please don't come to our spot. "We should go, I feel like we are being watched," The dark green dragon in white armor said to the scientist dragon. Alerted now, both dragons took flight and flew off into the distance, out of sight. I breathed a sigh of relief.

I thought they were going to inspect our hiding spot. The other dragons were still carrying equipment out and about and the soldiers were still guarding the entrance. "Hey, should we go back to the academy? We can figure something out for how to get you home," I asked her, in quiet tone. "Sure, I just-," she paused mid-sentence. "Look, being on another continent is awesome and all, and I like the adventure, I just-, I usually have my friends with me, and they're still on the other side of that portal, or I hope at least," she whispered to me. "Hey, my friends and I can help you, or I think so, lets just head back to the academy and sort things out," I whispered back to her. She nodded, and so we stalked out of our hiding area, back through the trees, and into the clearing. We took flight and went on our way back to the academy.
