AN: Good afternoon everyone and happy Friday. Sorry it has been so long, life has been nuts! My husband finished the kitchen in December but before he finished we were both diagnosed with COVID-19. We are both fine and had very mild symptoms but writing was the last thing on my mind at the time. I am still in the process of getting my sense of smell back. My brother also proposed to his girlfriend over Christmas and I was chosen to be a bridesmaid so that is happening too. And now my husband and I are thinking about starting a family. I hope all your lives are going well and everyone is staying safe. Anyways today is February 5, 2021 and this is the first chapter today. Anything you recognize is JK Rowling's and anything you don't is mine.
Hermione POV
I rubbed my temples as I made my way down to the Quidditch pitch with the other Gryffindors. Ginny kept trying to get closer to me but I was very careful to keep two to three people between us at all times.
"Hermione!" I quickly looked up and gasped in shock. Remus and my father were standing at the entrance to the arena where the Tri-Wizard Tournament would be held.
"Remus! Daddy!" I squealed running up to the two most important men in my life. Daddy started to laugh and Remus wrapped his arms around me the moment I slammed into him.
"Come on, we should find a spot before all the seats are filled." Remus said, dropping his arms.
"Do you mind if we sit together?" A voice asked softly. I turned around to see Luna standing awkwardly with Ginny. Snuffles wandered up next to Luna and looked up at her with big eyes. I raised an eyebrow at her in surprise but she ignored the look.
"S-Sure." I stuttered and turned quickly to run up the bleachers. Footsteps sounded closely behind me but I went all the faster.
"Hermione, slow down." Ginny said, trying to keep up. I ignored her.
"Is something going on?" Remus asked, keeping up with me easily.
"I don't really want to talk about it." I said sitting on the bench making sure to get a spot between daddy and Remus.
"How long do you think it will be before it starts?" Ron asked, sitting next to Ginny.
"Not sure." Lee Jordan said. I jumped and turned to see the other Weasley's sitting behind us.
A shrill whistle blew and Mr. Bagman came running out across the field and climbed up next to the judges and placed his wand against his throat. Suddenly his voice was amplified across the field as he explained the task that was set for the champions, they had to retrieve a golden egg that was mixed with real dragon eggs and would be guarded by a dragon. Points would be given for how well they did and points would be taken away if any of the eggs were smashed. Screams and horrified gasps came from the crowd while there was one joyous peel of laughter from where the Slytherins were sitting. It didn't take a genius to figure out who that was.
The dragon tamers led a blueish-gray Swedish Short-Snout dragon out and a couple of first year Hufflepuffs fainted. I shuddered and gripped tightly onto Remus' hand. Cedric came out with his wand tightly clutched in his hand. He pointed it at a rock and a moment later a Labrador retriever was standing there.
I gasped and quickly covered my eyes. I did not want to see what would happen to the dog. Remus put his arm around my shoulder. I was by no means a dog lover but I would never want to see one hurt.
The crowd gasped, screamed, and groaned collectively. I tentatively peaked between my fingers and to my horror the dragon blew a stream of fire at Cedric's face. He batted at the fire and screamed in a panic. My throat was clogged with fear. He dove at the dragon's feet where the eggs were and pulled the egg into his hands.
I couldn't watch Fleur and Krum do their tasks. It was too horrifying to watch. The gasps and screams continued but I ignored them. I went through my potions homework mentally and listed out all the ingredients that were needed in it. Once I was done with that I worked through my History of Magic essay but I couldn't concentrate on it very well.
"Hermione, you look green." Daddy said softly in my ear.
"I'm sure I do." I muttered darkly.
"Why they thought this would be a good idea is beyond me." Remus said with a sigh.
"Why did they do it?" I asked sitting up.
"It was the other heads of the schools actually. Dumbledore didn't -"
"YES, HE'S GOT THE EGG!" Bagman yelled.
Remus and I both jumped and I looked up. Harry was next. Oh Merlin...
It took awhile for them to bring out a very large black dragon. She looked mean and deadly. A shudder rippled through my body. The Hungarian Horntail blew flames at the dragon tamers and one's shirt caught fire. Oh! He quickly doused it with water from his wand. The dragon tamers left and a moment later a whistle blew.
Harry made his way out. I could barely see him; he looked so small. He raised his wand and made the spell. I knew what he had said even though I couldn't hear him with all the shouting and cheering.
People were jeering as Harry stood there awkwardly for a couple minutes. And then his broom came rushing through the air and stopped beside him. Harry swung his leg over it and kicked off the ground.
I watched in awe as Harry flew through the air like any other Quidditch match. He was very gifted with his flying capability. Thank Merlin for that!
"Great Scott, he can fly!" yelled Bagman as the crowd shrieked and gasped. "Are you watching this, Mr. Krum?"
Harry soared higher in a circle; the Horntail was following his progress; its head revolving on its long neck. Suddenly Harry plummeted just as the Horntail opened its mouth, but this time he was less lucky - he missed the flames, but the tail came whipping up to meet him instead, and as he swerved to the left, one of the long spikes grazed his shoulder, ripping his robes -
"NOOOO!" I screamed, raking my nails against my face. It took me a moment to realize that I hadn't been the only one who screamed. Tonks, looking ashen faced two rows behind me, had her hands threaded through her hair which was a deep black.
I turned back to Harry and he zoomed around the back of the Horntail. But a moment later he began to fly, first this way, then the other, not near enough to make her breathe fire to stave him off, but still posing a sufficient threat to ensure she kept her eyes on him. Her head swayed this way and that, watching him out of those vertical pupils, her fangs bared...
He flew higher. The Horntail's head rose with him, her neck now stretched to its fullest extent, still swaying, like a snake before its charmer. . .
Harry rose a few more feet, and she let out a roar of exasperation. He was like a fly to her, a fly she was longing to swat; her tail thrashed again, but he was too high to reach now. . . . She shot fire into the air, which he dodged.. . . Her jaws opened wide...
And then she reared, spreading her great, black, leathery wings at last, as wide as those of a small airplane - and Harry dove sharply. Before the dragon knew what had happened, or where he had disappeared to, he was speeding toward the ground, toward the eggs now unprotected by her clawed front legs. And he scooped up an egg before she had even realized what had happened.
"Look at that!" Bagman was yelling. "Will you look at that! Our youngest champion is quickest to get his egg! Well, this is going to shorten the odds on Mr. Potter!"
