"I didn't come here alone. My husband is in the car."
"Your husband. You told me you were divorced."
"I'm not. My husband is on Karen's birth certificate. You should know that Olivia. I'm married. The hospital automatically adds him to the birth certificate. He has to file paperwork to not be on her birth certificate."
"I didn't know that."
Mellie left Olivia and Fitz to get her husband out the car. He looked very unhappy.
"Get the damn baby so we can go Mellie."
"I want to hear what Olivia has to say."
"Who are you?" The black man asked Fitz.
"I'm Karen's dad."
"Are you going to hurt the baby?"
"No."
"Great, I don't have a reason to be here. Let's go Mellie."
"I'm not leaving Karen with Olivia and Fitz."
"You are asking me to take a white baby home. Karen is that man's baby. Let her stay here."
Mellie walked past them and took Karen out of her bassinet "She's my baby."
"You were okay with the adoption. That baby belongs here."
"I want my baby."
"We are getting a divorce if you bring that baby home."
There wasn't a need to explain anything to Mellie. Her husband was going to make her change her mind. Olivia knew they still would get divorced, but she wasn't going to volunteer any information.
"Why can't you accept my baby?"
"I'm not raising a white baby."
"So this hurts your ego. You're mad that I had an affair with a white man."
"It was a one night stand." Fitz corrected Mellie.
"If you bring that baby home, I'm leaving you."
"Fine. You can leave."
Olivia wasn't expecting that. Mellie looked around for Karen's car seat.
"You can't take Karen." Fitz said.
"You can come to Virginia and establish paternity."
"Mellie, I'm not going back to Virginia with you. I'm getting a hotel."
"I'm choosing my baby."
"Wait!" Olivia said.
"No." Mellie said, walking past Olivia and Fitz with the car seat.
Her husband started walking in the dark. Fitz looked at Olivia.
"What should we do?"
"We can't do anything right now. She'll be back. Mellie doesn't have anything for Karen. She's a broke waitress."
