Request from Kittyy: What about a chapter where Coulson threatens all of Daisy's boyfriends?
Miles
Coulson knew Skye was a grown woman, but he couldn't help the bile that rose in his throat at the thought of her with Miles. He had only known the girl for a couple months, but there was something about her, perhaps her innocence and youth, that caused him to feel extra protective of her. Sure, Miles did help them on a mission, but it didn't change the way Coulson viewed him. It was simple; Miles just wasn't good enough for Skye, and Coulson decided that the guy needed to hear it.
The computer-hacker was about to follow Skye into the Bus when Coulson figured now was as good of a time as any to confront the guy.
"Miles, a word?" The man approached Coulson with confidence in his posture. Phil wanted to roll his eyes at the arrogant attitude Miles carried.
"You did good tonight," Coulson paused, but quickly continued upon seeing the smug look on Miles's face. "But we wouldn't even be in this mess if you hadn't sold the information."
"Sir, I-"
"Don't interrupt. Your carelessness affected every person on this team, especially Skye. She's young. She has a future here and you almost ruined that for her. She may like you, but I want you to know right now that she's too good for you. If you ever hurt her again, well let's just say you'll regret it."
Coulson finished his monologue and didn't wait for the other man to respond. Yes, Skye made a mistake, but she was young and lonely. Coulson would be there to guide her and stand up for her, no matter what.
Lincoln
Coulson saw the way he looked at her, the way the two of them flirted in the halls, and asked about each other during missions. It wasn't like he didn't like the guy, he just didn't think he was right for Daisy. He knew he was being over protective, but everyone knew Daisy was practically his daughter. Lincoln got angry easily, he couldn't control his temper. Although Phil knew he wouldn't ever intentionally hurt Daisy, he still worried about them, so he took the opportunity to confront the man himself.
It was late in the afternoon when Coulson decided to call Lincoln from the lab, up to his office. The Inhuman sat across from the director, his posture was stiff and he carefully observed the older man.
"You could be a good agent." Coulson began, breaking the awkward silence. His hands were folded in front of him and his voice was steady. "You're smart and have useful powers, but your temperament is a problem."
Lincoln blushed, he knew it was a problem already.
"Yes, sir. I'm working on it."
"Good. I've seen the way you and Daisy are." Lincoln's eyes widened and his blush deepened. "I'm not blind, Lincoln. I know she means a lot to you, which is why I will only say this once. Do not hurt her. She's like a daughter to me, and I know May feels the same. I'm sure I don't need to tell you what would happen if you break Daisy's heart."
Lincoln nodded.
"Yes, sir. I would never hurt her."
"Good. It better stay that way." Coulson gave him a stern look before standing and guiding Lincoln out of the office.
Unfortunately, Lincoln did break Daisy's heart, just not in the way anyone expected. Coulson wished he could have protected Daisy, but there were some things even a father couldn't shield his daughter from. He just wished that someday Daisy would have better luck in the dating department.
Sousa
Coulson looked into the room where Daisy was lying in the hyperbaric chamber. He recalled the many times he'd watch over his daughter as she healed, but this time he wasn't the only one. Daniel Sousa had taken Phil's usual seat next to Daisy's bedside. Phil was a little jealous if he was being honest, but he was also happy that the man out of time was there to watch over Daisy.
"She's really something." Sousa said, welcoming Coulson into the room.
"That she is." Coulson agreed, pride evident in his tone.
"I'm glad her sister was able to save her." Coulson nodded along, trying to push the 'what if…' scenarios out of his mind.
"She's come close to death far too many times. I'm not sure what I would've done if we lost her." Coulson shuddered at the thought.
"I haven't known her that long, but I couldn't bear to lose her." Sousa admitted. "Sir, I know Daisy is like a daughter to you, and I just wanted to let you know that I want to be there for her."
Coulson took a moment to let the words sink in. He knew Sousa and Daisy were an item, he just wasn't expecting Sousa to be so upfront with him about it. Finally he spoke,
"She is the closest thing I have to a daughter. For me and May, well Daisy means the world to us. She's been hurt, abandoned, and betrayed more than anyone should ever be, and yet she has this ability to see the best in people. She's been hurt by people she's close to, including me."
He sighed and ran a hand down his face. Sousa listened attentively, soaking in every word.
"Daisy is strong and she keeps her emotions in check for the most part, she got that from May, but she is also fragile. So, if you aren't planning on sticking around, I suggest you leave now."
"No." Sousa replied firmly. His gaze traveled over to Daisy, "I'm not going to leave. I'm in it for the long run."
Coulson studied the man sitting across from him. His posture was relaxed, but alert and his eyes were concentrated on Daisy's sleeping form. Coulson knew in that moment that he wouldn't have to worry about Daniel Sousa, but he decided he should probably give him the "overprotective dad speech" (as Daisy and May had called it.)
"Good, that's what I like to hear, but if you hurt her, you're going to wish we left you in the 50's." Coulson gave him his best stern look, but Sousa just smiled easily.
"Trust me sir, if anything it will be her doing the hurting." The two shared a chuckle Phil let his posture become more relaxed.
"This isn't her first time saving the world, and I'm sure it won't be her last." Coulson said with pride. He began to regale Sousa with stories of Daisy's bravery and skill. Along with Melinda May, Daisy had been the center of Coulson's life for years now. He loved her as his own and thought she deserved the world. After all she had been through she needed someone that could make her smile, keep her safe, and respect her, and that someone was Daniel Sousa. That was the last time Phil Coulson ever gave the "overprotective dad speech" and if he was being honest, he was more than happy.
