Chapter 33: Find Higher Ground
Rory let out a groan.
She was in hell wasn't she?
Had to be in hell.
A gas-like noise jerked her awake, and a sound of a blimp made a tiny noise as if air was being depleted. Then she heard Ardeth's voice, attempting to wake her up. Was she dreaming? She blinked awake when his voice entered her subconsciousness.
"Rory!" he cried desperately. She woke up, forcing her eyes to open up, almost afraid, like she didn't know where she was.
"Ardeth?" she asked. "Is...is this heaven?"
"Not quite. But you are," he said, gently helping her up through the broken debris around her. He pushed off the grass shards off of her. She blushed a deep red, and felt her cheeks grow warm. "Are you okay?"
She swallowed hard, and shivered when she got up from the fall. She rubbed the back of her head. She blinked and looked around her surroundings. Poor Izzy. His flying boat was in shambles. It all came flooding back to her. Imhotep's mouthful of water had crushed them to the ground. All of them were in tact. She could see Rick helping Evie up off the ground, and Jonathan eventually helping himself up. Izzy had managed to get around the debris of the myriad of green grass shards from the fallen trees around them.
"Yes," she nodded.
"We're gonna get my son and we're gonna want to get out of here fast. So make this thing work Izzy," Rick said as he started handing Evie the bags, taking them out of the debris. Jonathan looked suspicious.
"No, this thing is filled with gas, not hot air, gas, to get this thing of f the ground. Where am I going to get gas from? Maybe I could use hot air but you know how many cubic meters I need? It's too big!" Izzy cried to Rick.
Rick slapped a hand on his shoulder. "Well if anyone can fill this thing up with hot air, Izzy, it's you," he winked at Rory. Rory smirked and grabbed her own bag, strapping it on her shoulder.
He leaned forward and swiped the golden stick he found back from Izzy making Rory shake her head. "Come to daddy."
"Horus," Ardeth turned his attention to the sky, and his owl that perched on his hand.
Ardeth unraveled a message and then he raveled it back, and tucked it under the owl's little contraption. He lifted Horus up in the air to head back to the medjai army following behind them in the desert.
Rory bit her lip, looking at a very disgruntled Izzy. He was looking at the damage. "You'll be all right Izzy. Have faith."
He gave her a small smile. "I guess. Good luck."
She nodded at him and then followed after the group, heading into the jungle.
"So, Rick, what's the plan?" Jonathan asked.
"Let's find some higher ground," Rick replied. Rory glanced at him curiously and Jonathan sighed. Right.
They trudged through the jungle in silence 'till all of a sudden a gunshot could be heard throughout, making them stop dead in their tracks.
"Horus!" Ardeth cried, rushing back. Rory turned around in concern and looked up at the sky. All she could see was a crystal clear blue, yet all she could feel was a wave of sadness, especially when she saw the look on his face when he turned towards them.
"I must go," he said to Rick.
Rick pushed through back towards the medjai. "Wait."
"Rick," Rory said, shaking her head. Rick glared at her.
"I must go let the commanders know where we are," he insisted.
"You can't," Rick said desperately.
"If the army of Anubis arises…" Ardeth began.
"I can go," Rory offered but Rick and Ardeth shook their heads.
"It's too dangerous to go alone with Lock-Nah out there. I can't loose you too. And besides, you have a different path, remember?"
Rory winced slightly. Right the book. She sighed, and tightened her strap over her shoulder, adjusting it a bit.
Rick even shook his head at Rory for her not to go. "I need you to help me find my son," he pleaded with him. Ardeth glanced at Rick, then Jonathan, Evie, and Rory, all looking towards him for his help.
"Then first I shall help you," he nodded tenderly.
"Thank you," Rick said appreciatively.
"If it makes you feel any better, they're probably really good with direction, and don't even need to ask," Rory said, making Ardeth smile a bit as he joined her side. "I'm sorry about Horus."
"Thank you," he said sincerely.
