Chapter 81 [Kent Farm]
Clark set a hay bale down on the barn floor. Despite Weakness, he wanted to contribute. Guilt ate at him over missing Gwen's first day in the science classes. She needs an assistant. I could've been in there. I just hope those guys keep their eyes in their head! He finished the stalls at the reduced pace. That looks better. Satisfaction strengthened him a bit.
"Clark, you're being ambitious. Aren't you?"
He stiffened. He turned slowly to find Lana watching him. "Hey, Lana. I couldn't stand being cooped up. So I changed out the stalls. No big deal." He shrugged the issues off. "How'd everything go today?"
"Miss Stacy did great." She handed him a Talon to go Cup. "The guys though acted like they did around Desiree. Biff Tarkington really went overboard. He talked down about her. He went on about Pete and Samantha. He even put down our relationship." She smirked. "We set him straight. Miss Stacy even got a few words in on him. Not that I think it'll make a difference. So you're feeling better?"
"Sure. Mrs. Crane told Mom it was backlash from whatever happened to Professor Dubois. Guess I'm going to have to practice with the telepathy?" He sipped on the coffee.
"We're going to practice, Mr. Kent." She frowned. "Jor-El might have a point. Your Dad hammers you about doing human things. Granted you have to act like everyone else. That doesn't mean we stop practicing. We have to turn the sensitivity up and down I guess."
"Guess so. I wasn't expecting that. I hope Professor Dubois' doing better. Mom's at the mansion dropping off Lex's produce order. She'll check on her too. I can't believe those guys were like that this morning."
"Why not, Clark? Pete and you were before." She raised an eyebrow. Amusement sparkled in her eyes. "Pete and you were gawking at Desiree. I mean even though she was married to Lex." A wide smirk to rival Lex's best spread across her face.
He squirmed. "Well…I guess Pete and I are older. We see things differently."
"We're a little older. Maybe." She had to admit that the needling was fun. "Is there anything else that's different?"
"Well yeah." He gulped on the coffee. "He and Sam are dating. We're dating."
"I knew you'd get it." She nodded. Meantime we keep practicing. We talk with telepathy. It's good practice.
Sure. Wish we could tell which people can overhear us. He took yet another gulp from his cup.
Guess we'll just have to be careful. She hugged him. Kind of like your flying abilities.
Lana, that was an accident! I was worried about you and kind of forgot about…. He clammed up.
Forgot? Forgot about what? She pushed him.
My…well…this is so stupid… Embarrassment flushed his face.
What is? Clark, it's okay.
My…fear of heights. I'm scared of heights. He rolled his eyes. "You've seen me have problems with the windmill. That's why."
"We'll have to work on that. Won't we?" She shrugged. "It's just like that song 'Time After Time'."
"How so?" He raised an eyebrow.
"If you fall, I will catch you, my Superman." She pressed her lips against his. She touched her forehead to his. Her eyes sparkled into his. Remember that. I'm here. I love you. No matter what, Clark.
That message penetrated even Clark's super dense psyche. His heart raced. His mind relaxed. "Thanks, Lana. I…" He put one foot in front of the other forgetting where he was.
He plummeted to the ground. The impact shook the barn and house.
"Clark? CLARK!" She saw him climb to his feet.
He grimaced Manure's violation of the Plaid and Denim. I'm all right!
She shook her head. I think you proved that you're not going to get hurt by a fall, Clark. I've seen you hit concrete and get up. Have to say that's an interesting look on you. She toasted him with the cup.
Don't tempt me. I might let you share in it. Mischief glinted in the smirk.
NO YOU WON'T! THIS IS A NEW BLOUSE! She narrowed her eyes.
He shook his head. He streaked into the house, changed clothes and streaked back. Want to check on Professor Dubois?
Okay. I'll drive though. I don't want to get stranded if you get overwhelmed again. She finished her cup on the way to the blazer.
Mishaps it seemed ruled the learning curve….
