Chapter 39 – Headlines

It was the morning after the Hestia familia party and Freya was still getting over her glow from it. She had been practically drooling at all the souls that had surrounded her that night. She could plot and plan all she wanted but this was no longer a matter of stealing one or two children, she had wanted to steal them all. That would be too obvious and would draw too much attention to herself. She could only shake her head at how lucky Hestia had gotten. There was only one way that you could transfer over that many children in one go from a different familia and not arouse suspicion… and that was if Hestia herself returned to Tenkai or… died.

As tempting as that was to Freya, she would not go down that path. Besides, there was no guarantee they would join her if anything did happen to Hestia. For now, she would adopt a wait and see approach.

Assassin Shuten Doji also intrigued her. Unlike the rest of them, she was unattached to Hestia familia. For now, Freya thought to woo her into her own familia. The problem lay in the fact that she was an 'Oni' as she proclaimed and if what she remembered about what Takemikazuchi had said about Oni were true, the woman was technically a monster. She wondered if monsters could get falna or at least intelligent ones. She wondered what the guild stance on intelligent monsters was. Regardless, she wanted Shuten Doji even if she would have to change some of the laws to get her.

Breakfast was sent up to her in her bedroom alongside her copy of the Orario Times and emblazoned on the front cover of the paper was the headline, "Mount Fuji Rises!"

It was an account of the events of the previous evening, detailing its new location and complete with photographs of the event and the mountain itself. It was wholly within Hestia familia property so it became the property of Hestia familia. What they wanted with a mountain still baffled Freya but she giggled to herself, knowing that whatever that captain of theirs was doing, it would most likely be interesting.

The paper felt thicker than normal as she diligently read through the various articles. It was finally when she got to a new section that she realised why the paper was thicker than usual. There was a new section to the paper now titled 'Orarian Society'. It was all about Orario's high society, gossip and the gods. Splashed on the cover of this section was a picture of herself and Hestia raising a flute of wine to the camera. She reeled in horror at the picture.

Flicking through the rest of the section, she realised that the party was covered in-depth with plenty of photo's to match. She wanted to scream. Why had Hestia not told her she was dressed only in her nightie. She remembered Hestia giggling. Was this why? Her hair and makeup looked a mess. She was definitely not at her best. Shock turned to horror when she flicked over another page and saw a photo she hadn't realised had been taken. 'Uh oh!' she thought to herself, 'This photo's going to be trouble.'

Just then her Hphone started ringing.

Goddess Ishtar and Archer Ishtar were having a laugh at the expense of Freya as they flicked through the newspaper and saw her in her nightie. Even though the goddess of love, beauty and sex still looked beautiful in the pictures, it was more that she was caught in her underwear in public and the humiliation of it that had the two laughing.

"Why wasn't I invited to the party." Goddess Ishtar pouted. She didn't like missing out on what was obviously the most exclusive party ever held in Orario, right on top of Babel tower of all things.

"Well… It was a private party." Archer Ishtar shrugged her shoulders as they turned another page.

"Look! You were there!" goddess Ishtar pointed to photo of Archer Ishtar dancing with a sparkler in her hand. "And you didn't even think to invite me!"

"Sorry. Captain's orders. Strictly invites only." Thinking to distract her companion, Archer Ishtar pointed to a photo of a certain handsome, golden-haired man. "Ooohhh! Look at that!"

"Oooohhh! Another one!" goddess Ishtar spoke as she took out her scissors and started cutting out a picture of Caster Gilgamesh and pasting it into her scrapbook.

"I got some more good shots too!" Archer Ishtar enthused as she brought out a handful of photo's taken of Gilgamesh when he wasn't looking.

"You've been stalking him!" goddess Ishtar shocked, "How lucky! Why couldn't it be me!"

"Stalking is such a strong word…" Archer Ishtar smiled broadly, "I prefer 'information gathering.'"

"My my," goddess Ishtar's eyes grew when they landed at some of the racier pictures, "You sure managed to get some good shots. How much for them?"

"Now now," Archer Ishtar shook her head, "What's a couple of photos between friends."

They both laughed together at that. Archer Ishtar turned a sweet smile on goddess Ishtar and innocently asked, "You know, I heard your children could hit well above their weight. What's the secret to getting so strong?"

Goddess Ishtar stared at Archer Ishtar suspiciously, "Why would there be a secret to it?"

Archer Ishtar laughed, "You can tell me. I won't tell anyone. I just want to get stronger for myself as well and any information I can get to get stronger, I will use."

God Soma was having his breakfast. Things hadn't been going well for him. A familia member of his, one Liliruca Arde had gone missing for weeks now. His precious abode had been invaded and his prize wine had been stolen. He had yet to get any leads on the thief and no one had stepped forward with any useful information.

He opened his paper and started to read the news as he had his breakfast. A new mountain appearing overnight was the main headline. Though interesting it didn't concern him. It was when he reached the new section, "Orarian Society' that things took an interesting turn.

The first image that caught his eye was that of a certain missing Liliruca Arde who was holding a glass of coke at the camera with the biggest grin on her face. How she managed to get an invitation to an event that none of the other gods could attend was anyone's guess. The second photo had her dancing with a tall blond man and the two seemed to have the biggest grins on their faces as he tossed her up into the air.

Hestia was a powerhouse that no god wanted to mess with but stealing a child without permission was still taboo. Although looking at the photos of Lily she didn't have the look of someone who was kidnapped or held against her will. To be safe, he decided that a polite letter would be the best course of action.

Flipping over the page a final photo grabbed his attention. It was of a certain demon, hands on the chin of a certain goddess of love he knew very well, Freya, a long tongue tracing a line up the goddesses neck and the goddess herself having an almost amorous look in her eye. He slammed his hand down on the table. This was the clue he had been waiting for. Why she never came forward with information, he would never know. But by the looks of things, she knew this demon and she knew her well.

He quickly pulled out his mobile phone and dialed her number. He would have words with her and he had a few choice words of his own he wanted her to hear.

Syr Flover idly read the paper as the lunchtime traffic at the 'Hostess of Fertility' this morning was rather slow. News of the new mountain was already the talk of the town as it had literally appeared out of nowhere and overnight. It was described as an epic engineering project of Hestia familia and was even taller than Babel tower itself. It was truly a grand achievement and a blatant display of Hestia familia's power.

Even still, that wasn't what caught Syr's eyes as she read through the new section, the 'Orarian Society' section. It was essentially a gossip section and she was intrigued by it all as she fantasized about being part of Orario's burgeoning high society figures. She couldn't help but coo to herself as she drank her Hearthbucks Mochaccino and gazed longingly at all the wonderful dresses and handsome men of the Hestia familia in the photos. But there was one boy who she couldn't help but notice.

She found various photos of Bell enjoying a drink of coke or a dance with his goddess. She thought he looked radiant in his tuxedo. She had asked Mia Grand if she could have the paper after the day was over as Mia had paid for the subscription purely for her customers sake. It was the in-thing to do right now as again, McHestia's had started that trend.

Syr intended to start a scrapbook of her favourite hero and she had been waiting patienty everyday for him to pass by or work across the road again but it seems he had yet to turn up. Now that they had staff to man the McHestia's across the road, it seemed that Bell had disappeared, probably to the dungeon, she thought to herself.

Reading on she noticed an unusual statement saying that "For more photos, visit us on .com or check us out on our HestiaBook page – Orario Times. For information on how to access these services please Hoogle 'Internet use' or 'Website access'."

It was all mumbo jumbo to her but as with all things Hestia, she would investigate it further, simply for the chance to see more photos, especially more photos of her beloved Bell.
