Chapter 39: A Moment In Love
May and Drew slowly backed away from each other, opening their eyes and ending the kiss. They stare into each other's eyes and smile.
"I love you so much, Drew." May said.
"But not as much as I love you." Drew said.
"Is that a challenge?"
"Maybe."
"Then challenge accepted." May said confidently.
They continue staring into each other's eyes, lights still everywhere around them. Drew then reaches his hand out and brushes May's cheek, tucking hair behind her ear. Drew leans in and presses his lips on May's again, both of them closing their eyes.
May wrapped her arms around Drew's neck and pulled him closer to her, making Drew deepen the kiss. On the inside, Drew was surprised by May's actions, but he just relaxed and continued tasting her lips.
("We both know that we belong together.") Drew thought. ("May is my true love. And now she's my fiancé. I couldn't be happier at the outcome of today. It started off wrong, but ended a whole lot better.")
("Drew asked me to marry him. Drew asked me to marry him. Drew asked me to marry him!") May kept repeating in her head. ("I was hoping that he'd ask me sometime soon. And he really planned out the perfect way to ask. On a romantic canoe ride. I just know that I want to spend the rest of my life with him. He's my true love.")
Drew and May both ended the kiss, backing away from each other. "Maybe you actually win the competition." Drew said. "I didn't think you'd pull me closer to you." He said, cheeks tinted pink.
May blushed. "Well...you're the one that kissed me again in the first place."
"We'll call it a tie?"
May smiled and nodded. "Yep."
"...so...I'm curious to know why you said yes to marrying me." Drew said.
"Did you want me to say no?"
"No. It's not that. It's just...the scavenger hunt was ruined by someone who clearly wants to break us up." Drew said. "And after our argument about the clues...I was thinking that you might actually have said no."
"Well...everything was good because I know that you weren't the one who left those clues. And I still love you of course, so when you pulled out the ring box, I was beyond excited to say yes to you. The sweet words you said before proposing...all of this…" May added, looking around at the firefly lights. She looked back at Drew. "How could I possibly say no to someone who loves me as much as you do?"
Drew smiled. "Well, I'm glad that everything worked out in the end." Drew said, taking May's hand in his. He lifted her hand up to his mouth and he placed a kiss on it.
May blushed. "Me too."
Drew lowered their hands. He smiled at May's red face. Her face turned a deep scarlet.
"You're cute when you blush." Drew said.
May laughed nervously. "I-I am?"
Drew nodded. May looked down shyly. Drew released her hand from his and he looked up at the many lights flying above them.
"That one Illumise that we saw before the rest came was planned." Drew said.
May looked up at Drew. "What do you mean?"
"I went to a place where hundreds of Illumise and Volbeat live and I asked them if they could help me with this proposal."
"Wow…" May said, looking up at the lights. "They really did light up the area nicely."
"Yeah." Drew looked at May. "And your parents know that I was going to propose today."
May looked at Drew. "They do?"
Drew nodded. "And they both gave me their blessing."
"Really? Even my Dad?"
"That's what 'both' means, April."
May's eyebrows furrowed. "I know what both means! And my name is May!"
"I know." Drew said cockily, flipping his bangs.
May sighed. "You're impossible."
"That's me."
"But I still love you for the teasing."
"And I love you too." Drew said. "And yes, your Dad even gave me his blessing. He feels like it might be too early, but he let me do it anyway. I just knew I wanted to propose to you tonight of all nights."
"The most romantic day of the year."
"Yeah. And I want us to treasure this moment." Drew said, taking both of May's hands. "You mean everything to me, Princess. And I really can't imagine my life without you in it. I want you to always be mine and I'll always be yours. Forever."
May blushed and shyly smiled. "I feel the same way about you."
(This song is "Just for a Moment" from High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. There's changed lyrics.)
"I fell in love with the only girl who knows what I'm about." Drew sang.
"I fell in love with a boy and I just know I won't fall out." May sang. "After all is said and done, I just wish this would go on and on."
"Is it just a part we're playing? Cause it don't feel like we're faking."
"When we're underneath the lights, my heart's no longer broken." They sang together. "For a moment. Just for a moment. When we're singing eye to eye, there's so much left unspoken. For a moment. Just for a moment. A moment in love."
The Illumise and Volbeat are doing their courtship dance around the canoe, everywhere you look. "A moment in love." They sang together.
"But is a moment enough?" May sang.
"Way, way back then." Drew sang. "Always dreamed it's you and me until the end."
"Now, we can't play pretend." May sang. "And I'm scared that our relation will descend. Will you always be right there? Will you love me and no matter where?"
"Is it just a part we're playing? Cause it don't feel like we're faking."
May's scepter jewel glowed pink and strings of pink lights started flying around them. "When we're underneath the lights," they sang together. "My heart's no longer broken. For a moment. Just for a moment. When we're singing eye to eye, there's so much left unspoken. For a moment. Just for a moment. A moment in love." As if on cue, a breeze started blowing through May and Drew's hair. The pink strings of light as well as the firefly lights were circling them. The entire area around them is lit up in beautiful lights. Those lights are reflecting in their eyes, making them sparkle. "A moment in love."
"But is a moment enough?" Drew sang.
"Maybe your heart still stops when you see me." May sang. "Maybe it's worth another kiss. Perfect time for all of this." May sang as she moved her right hand from Drew's hand to Drew's face, cupping his left cheek.
"When we're underneath the lights, my heart's no longer broken. For a moment. Just for a moment." They sang together. "When we're singing eye to eye, there's so much left unspoken. For a moment. Just for a moment. A moment in love. A moment in love. But is a moment enough?"
The lights around them slowed down and May lowered her hand from Drew's face. "When we're underneath the lights, my heart's no longer broken." They sang together softly as Drew raised his right hand to brush hair behind May's ear. "For a moment. Just for a moment." They sang, ending the song and Drew leaning in closer to May.
May blushed as Drew's face got closer to hers. Their lips are only millimeters apart. Before Drew could kiss May, he sensed something coming from shore, but they're way out at sea. Drew internally gasped, backed away from May, and quickly took out a Pokéball from his belt. He tossed it in the air. The strings of pink lights disappeared into thin air.
"Flamethrower!" Drew ordered.
His Flygon materialized and immediately used Flamethrower towards where they left the shore. The Illumise and Volbeat all moved out of the way and gathered behind the canoe opposite of Flygon. The Flamethrower collided with something, creating an explosion.
This all happened so fast when Drew was about to kiss May. She gasped at the sound of the explosion. She now turned her head to see the explosion. "Drew, what was that?"
"Someone tried attacking you from shore." Drew answered.
"From shore? But I thought we're way out in the middle of the ocean."
At that moment, they both saw a Hyper Beam coming towards them. "Flamethrower!" Drew ordered.
Flygon launched another Flamethrower at the Hyper Beam, causing another explosion.
"We are in the middle of the ocean." Drew finally told May. "But a Hyper Beam can really attack from far away." Drew is still looking at where the Hyper Beam was fired from. "I think the person that's aiming the attacks at you is the one that changed the clues."
May gasped. "Really?"
"Yeah. And it seems like she's stopped telling her Pokémon to fire. So I think we should get back to shore and get you home safely."
"But...how do you know that it's a she?"
Drew looked at May. "Well, whoever changed your clues clearly wants to break us up by making you mad at me. And also, the Hyper Beams were aiming for you. So I figure that this person must be one of my fans if she's targeting you and not me."
"Oh...I guess that makes sense."
"Now, I need to get you home." Drew said, looking around the floor of the canoe. He grabbed a rope. "Flygon, think you can pull us?"
"Fly~!" Flygon answered, nodding to Drew.
"Drew, do we really have to go now?" May asked.
Flygon flew to Drew and Drew wrapped the rope around Flygon's neck. He stood up and tied the other end of the rope around a little pillar at the end of the canoe. "I need to keep you safe." Drew said to May's question.
"But...I'm not ready to leave this beautiful night." May said.
Drew sat back down in front of May. "I know. But like I said earlier, you mean everything to me. And someone is clearly after you. So we're going back to Petalburg, okay? You'll be safe in the castle."
After a moment, May gave a small smile. "Okay, Drew."
Drew smiled and nodded to Flygon. Flygon started flying towards the shore, pulling the canoe with him.
"Bye Illumise and Volbeat!" May called, waving to the fireflies. They all waved back and started flying away.
"Someone is really taking her jealousy of you too far." Drew said.
May looked at Drew. "Yeah…and you had a fast reaction to the first Hyper Beam. How did you know that one was coming though?"
"I just sensed it." Drew answered. "I can't really explain what happened in my head, but I sensed a Hyper Beam firing at you and I had to stop it."
"Well, thank you for saving me."
"You're welcome. I wasn't about to let my fiancé get hurt."
May blushed and smiled shyly. She stared at her right hand and at the engagement ring. "I never told you yet, but this ring is beautiful."
"I got the best one for you."
"So, there was no one at the dock and we were able to make it here with no problems." Drew said.
They're in May's room after going to Caroline and Norman to tell them the good news.
"I wonder who was attacking us." May said.
"Me too…" Drew agreed. "But you're safe here. I don't like how someone tried attacking you."
"Especially the day you proposed." May said.
"Yeah. I need to find out who that was."
May took Drew's hand. "Drew, don't worry about finding the one who attacked us. Let's just let it go because we're fine, right?"
"I guess I could let it go." Drew said. "But don't you want to know who it was too?"
"Of course I do. But she tried attacking us with a Pokémon that knows Hyper Beam. It's a little scary to think about finding her."
"I hear you."
"So you'll leave it alone?"
Drew stared into May's eyes for a moment before smiling and nodding. "I'll leave it alone." May smiled.
Drew scooted closer to May on the bed and he wrapped his arms around her back, pulling her to him in an embrace. "I love you." He whispered in her hair.
"I love you too." May said.
"I won't let anyone hurt you. And I'm yours, okay?" He asked, backing away from May.
May blushed and smiled. "I like the sound of that."
Drew brushed May's cheek, tucking strands of hair behind her ear. "I should go home now."
"Okay."
After a moment of silence, Drew leaned closer to May. He pressed his lips on May's, both of them closing their eyes.
It was a quick kiss, but they still enjoyed it all the same. Drew backed away from May and lowered his hand from her face. No matter how long their kisses are, they still enjoy kissing the other.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Princess." Drew said.
"See you tomorrow...Prince." May said.
Drew blushed slightly at being called "Prince". He stood up and started walking to the balcony. He called out his Flygon. May walked out on the balcony to see Drew climb onto Flygon. They looked at each other one last time before Drew and Flygon started flying off.
