Hey everybody, this is a longer chapter and it includes scenes and events from a One Chicago crossover, although it's a little different this time because Erin is involved. It will also be split into 2 chapters. Enjoy and thankyou for those who are still reading along and reviewing!

About a week after deciding to have a small wedding, they finally decided on a date. So they now had 2 more months until Erin would become a Halstead and she couldn't be happier. But then that thought quickly left her mind when Jay hurried off worried.

It was early in the afternoon when Jay got a phone call his fathers apartment building was on fire. Voight covered him without any questions and Erin couldn't help but worry but she stayed put, she knew if Jay needed her he'd call, well that's what she hoped.

Jay drove as fast as possible until he got to his fathers apartment, he'd tried ringing him on the way but no answer. He called Will and explained what was happening and hoped Will had heard from him but still no luck.

Once he pulled up and got out he raced into the building and thankfully saw that firehouse 51 was on scene.

"Chief Boden!" Jay yelled as he raced towards the chief.

Boden turned and saw Jay with a worried look on his face, "Halstead?"

"Where's the fire? What floor?" Jay said in a hurry.

"20, why? What's up?" Boden said confused.

"My dad lives on 23."

Boden turned away to speak to Casey, try get some information for Jay, "Casey, what's it looking like up there?"

"Where's your father?" He turned to Jay after speaking with Casey.

"He lives in 23C."

"Is he up there now?"

"I don't know, he's not answering." Jay said holding up his phone, still worried.

"Excuse me, have you seen Pat Halstead today?" Boden asked the manager.

"Sorry, I don't know him. There's over 500 residents in the tower." The manager shrugged.

"Chief, my dad's got a heart condition." Jay said to Boden, worry in his voice.

"It's okay. We're working our primary search. 23 is next."

Jay nodded, "Do your thing. How can I help?"

"Keep that doorway clear, would you?" Boden instructed.

"Absolutely," Jay nodded, "Everybody back. Clear this door."

After ten or so minutes Boden made his way over to Jay while he had Casey on the radio, "Casey, I got Jay Halstead here. His father lives at 23C. He's not answering his phone. Take a look."

"On our way. Kidd, let's go." Casey replied, Jay nodded towards Boden and took a deep breath, waiting patiently.

"Chief, we're inside 23C right now." Casey said through the radio.

"Halstead," Boden waved hun over, "This way."

"Go ahead, Casey. What'd you find?"

"Nothing. The apartment's empty. No sign of Mr. Halstead." Casey said.

"Carry on, Casey," Boden said then turned to Jay, "That's good news, right?"

Jay sighed, "Yeah, I guess so. Thanks, Chief."

Jay stepped outside and called Will, something still didn't sit right with him.

"Hey Jay." Will answered.

"Hey, man, they just made it to dad's apartment. He's not there. You hear back from him?"

"No. I just tried his cell again. Still nothing."

"Same," Jay took a breath, "You think of anywhere else he might be?"

"Well, the guy likes to stick to his routines. You know that. A walk in the morning, then home for lunch. He should be back by now."

"All right, well, I'm gonna keep an eye out. You just let me know if you hear from him. I'm guessing he'll call you first." Jay said before hanging up.

Jay made his way into the building once again after searching outside for his father, still nothing. He found chief Boden again and this time he wasn't going anywhere, he would make his way up the building himself if he needed to.

"Chief. Any news?" Boden shook his head, "Nobody's heard from him. I'm worried he's still inside somewhere." Jay said as he made his way to the managers desk again.

"Come on, you must have seen this guy today." Jay said pulling out his phone and showing him a photo of his dad, "Pat Halstead. He's a crusty old pain in the ass. He never smiles. Loves to yell at people."

The manager frantically nodded, "Okay, yeah, yeah. I know the guy. I haven't seen him today."

"Does he have any friends in the building?" Jay questioned.

"I see him sometimes pushing Mr. Strouse. He's in a wheelchair. Ronnie Strouse." The manager explained.

"A guy in a wheelchair? What floor does he live on?" Jay said with hope, that's where his father was.

"Uh, 25C. Top floor."

"That's where he went, for sure." Jay said about to rush off but Boden grabbed his arm stopping him.

"Okay. Halstead. I can't have a cop get killed on my fireground. My men will handle it." Boden said and Jay nodded.

"Chief, I got two victims on 25, Jay's father and his friend." Casey said into the radio, Jay rushed over and sighed with relief.

"Good call. What's their condition?" Boden asked.

"They're both conscious and responsive, but Mr. Halstead's in rough shape." Casey replied.

Finally after what had felt like hours Jay finally seen his father being carried out, he followed them to the ambo.

"Dad! Dad! Is he all right?" Jay asked Casey who was carrying his father to the ambo.

"He was above the fire floor. Swallowed a lot of smoke. Been in and out of consciousness." Casey explained.

"Casey, thanks, man." Jay patted his back once his dad was laid down on the stretcher.

"Yeah, no worries." Casey said before rushing off.

Jay then turned all his attention to his father and the paramedics that started working on him, "Dad! Hey, this is my father. His name is Pat Halstead. He's 64 years old. Listen, he had bypass surgery a month ago."

"Dad, can you hear me?" Jay asked his father.

"He looks hypoxic. Let's get him on oxygen. We can do CO levels and EKG en route, rule out cardiac dysrhythmia." The paramedics explained and said to one another.

"I'm, I'm okay, Jay." Pat coughed out.

"Dad, Ronnie looks like he's gonna be okay. You did good. You're damn lucky to be alive." Jay said to his father before hoping into the ambo and driving off.

After Pat had gotten to med and they were waiting on Dr Rhodes to come down Jay thought he would call Erin and fill her in with everything, he knew how worried she'd be.

"Jay, is everything okay?" She answered, worry in her voice.

"Hey yeah no he's fine, we are at med now." Jay said.

He heard Erin sigh with relief, "That's really good Jay, so he's fine?"

"Needs to get checked out he inhaled a fair bit of smoke. I'm going to stick around here for a bit, let Voight know?" Jay said.

"No worries, you don't want me to come down?"

"Yeah no it's okay don't worry, they need you there."

"Okay, I love you."

"Love you too, bye." Jay said hanging up.

He then made his way into his fathers room where his brother was assessing him.

"Pop tried to play hero. He forgot he was in his 60s with a bum ticker." Jay said as he and his brother watched him coughing uncomfortably.

"Yeah, well. This is your fault to begin with." Pat turned to Jay.

"Me?" Jay said angrily.

"Yeah. Stick me in that fire trap." Pat said in between coughs.

"Pop, stop talking." Will said trying to intervene.

"You said you liked the place." Jay said annoyed.

"You close on the EKG?" Will asked the nurse.

"Just about." She replied.

"What's the point of this?" Pat said frustrated, he wasn't the one who liked to be fussed over.

"Easy. Paramedics said you were complaining of chest pain. Did you forget you had a quadruple bypass a few weeks ago? Come on, stay still." Will said trying to calm his dad down.

"Hey, if it isn't my favorite patient. How you doing, Mr. Halstead?" Rhodes said walking in.

"Fine." Pat replied bluntly, getting eye rolls from both his sons.

"So you felt some tightness in your chest, huh?" Rhodes said starting to check him over.

"It's nothing."

"Well, you might be right. I don't see any ST elevation or depression. No left access deviation. Looks like a strong and healthy heart to me." Rhodes said.

"Yeah, good. We done?" Pat asked.

"Nope, not yet. You still have a pretty nasty

inhalation injury. Can I get a CBC, CMP, and a carboxyhemoglobin? And add a full cardiac workup." Rhodes said to the nurse before getting called out for another consult.

"Mr. Halstead, a pleasure as always." Rhodes said before walking out, nodding at both Jay and Will.

"Thank you, Connor." Jay said patting him on his way out.

"I don't need all this." Pat grunted.

"Calm down, you're getting yourself worked up." Jay said annoyed.

"What do you know? You're no doctor." Pat said snapping at Jay.

"Pop." Will said trying to once again intervene.

"Forget it." Jay waved him off, about to walk out of the room.

"You had no right to sell my house." Pat said.

"You want to talk about this again? It was a wreck. You couldn't take care of the place. I thought we were over this. Moved on?" Jay said furiously.

"You just wanted my money." Pat said.

"Hey." Will said a little louder this time.

"You don't have any money, you thankless old prick." Jay said before walking out, slamming the door open.

"Whatever." Pat grunted.

"Jay." Will said hoping Jay would stop.

Will walked out of the room about half hour later, finding Jay waiting outside, "Dad's stable. Why don't you go in and talk to him?You know, make up?"

Jay rolled his eyes, "Why? He started it. And thanks a lot. We agreed that we were gonna sell that place and you just stood there. You didn't say anything."

"What's the point in arguing with him? He's old. He's sick. Just let it go." Will shrugged.

"That's fine for you to say. You're not the bad guy here." Jay snapped at his brother.

"Jay, come on..."

"No, seriously. All those times you were away, and all those times you said that you couldn't leave the hospital, who took care of Dad? Me." Jay said interrupting Will.

"I did plenty for Dad especially when the two of you were still on the outs. I still do.Who goes and checks on him? Keeps him on his meds?" Will said defending himself.

"Yeah, all right. Tell you what. When he gets out of here, you find him his next apartment." Jay said before walking off.

Erin thought stopping by med on the way to pick up Lily was a good idea, she hadn't heard from Jay since their phone call and that was a few hours ago.

She parked the car and made her way to the emergency entrance but she found Jay sitting on one of the benches outside. She approached him slowly not knowing what was going through his head.

"Jay?" She said quietly and he quickly flicked his head up.

"Erin, what are you doing here."

"Haven't heard from you, thought I'd check in before getting Lily. How are things?" She said sitting next to him.

"You know what my dads like, stubborn." Jay said frustrated.

"I know babe but as long as he's okay." She said grabbing his hand then giving it a squeeze.

"Yeah I think he's okay, Rhodes said everything was looking good but they ran more tests." Jay explained.

"That's good then isn't it? So why are you out here?"

"He was going on about the apartment again saying it was my fault that he was in there fault that I nearly killed him pretty much." Jay shrugged.

"Jay you know he doesn't mean that."

"Erin save it, we all know he loves Will more then me, he isn't proud of who I am."

"He may not show it but I know he is, even still if he isn't there is plenty more people that are. Your a great man Jay Halstead and you only ever do what you thinks best." Erin said trying to make Jay feel somewhat better of himself.

"Yeah maybe," Jay sighed, "Look I better get back in there, you want to come in and say hi? I mean he'd probably be happy to see you."

Erin smiled, "I have to go get Lil but how bout we visit afterwards, we all know how much that little girl lights up everyone's world."

"Okay, see you later. I love you."

"Love you too babe." Erin said as she quickly gave Jay a kiss and headed off.

After speaking to Erin Jay decided to just go and stay and wait in his fathers room until they arrived later, even if he didn't speak at all.

"Dr. Halstead, you got that?" A nurse yelled as she heard buzzers going off from Pats room, Will nodded as he rushed off into his fathers room.

"Dad!" Will shouted.

"He was talking just a minute ago." The nurse explained.

"No pulse. Bag him." Will said to the nurse.

"Wait, he's your dad. Shouldn't another doctor run the code?" She said as she watched Will start to do compressions on his father.

"You got one handy?"

"What's going on?" Jay said worried as he entered the room, confused as to what was unfolding in front of his eyes.

"He's in V-fib. Charge to 200 and give me the paddles." Will instructed as he waited for the paddles to charge.

"Clear." He yelled. One shock. Still nothing.

"Still no pulse. Push a milligram of epi." Will instructed.

"Got it." The nurse nodded.

"Will?" Jay said worried, as he looked towards his brother who was still doing compressions.

"Charge to 200." Will instructed.

"Charging." The nurse said.

"Clear." Will yelled.

"Clear." They responded. Second shock. Still nothing.

"Nothing. Another milligram of epi." Will said once again.

"Yep." The nurse replied.

Half hour later the Halstead brothers stood there, blank as they watched the neurologist go over their father. Jay more confused then Will, he had no idea what was going on and what everything meant.

"How long before you restored sinus rhythm?" Sam said.

"He was down around five minutes." Will said bluntly.

"Well, that's consistent with what I'm seeing. Almost no EEG waveforms." Sam explained.

"What does that mean?" Jay said taking a step forward.

"You want to tell him?" Sam said looking between the brothers.

"Are we not seeing some brain activity?" Will asked Sam.

"Artifacts. Distortion, interference. Dust on the window." Sam explained.

"Okay, I am...I'm not following." Jay stuttered.

"Your father's brain-dead." Sam said bluntly.

"So he's just not coming back? Like, you...you're saying that there's...there's no chance?" Jay said trying to hold back his shock and tears.

"If I had to calculate the odds, I'd say 1,000 to 1 against," Sam paused, "This vent could be put to better use." He said looking towards Will.

"What? Are you serious?" Jay said angrily.

Will placed a hand on Jays chest gently, "Jay."

"The hell is wrong with you, man? Are you kidding me?" Jay said to Sam who was exiting the room, Jay wasn't sure what he'd do if Will wasn't holding him back. Who did this guy think he was?

"We'll talk about it. Thanks, Sam." Will said calmly.

Wasn't too long and Jay was pacing in one of the hallways while Will tried explaining everything to him.

"Do you want me to call Erin or something? Jay you need to calm down."

"So all your degrees, all that money, all those years in school, this is the best you can do?" Jay said completely ignoring what Will was asking him.

"Jay, Dad almost died two years ago. He's been living on borrowed time." Will said.

"Abrams didn't say Dad had no chance."

"1,000 to 1 is no chance."

"You just want to give up?" Jay snapped.

"I'm trying to be realistic. I've seen a lot of patients in his condition."

Jay rolled his eyes, "There goes that doctor voice."

"I'm sorry, but I am a doctor." Will shoved back in Jays face.

"Yeah, don't worry, we got that message. And Dad knew you thought you were better than us. We always came in second, you weren't there, and now you want to decide what happens?"

"That is not true, Jay." Will shook his head.

"There you are." The COO said approaching the brothers.

"Ms. Garrett, this is my brother, Jay." Will said introducing Jay.

"Yes. I'm the hospital's COO." She said shaking Jays hand, "I heard about your father. I'm very sorry."

"Thank you." Jay nodded.

"I want you both to know that there's no hurry

in making any decisions about Mr. Halstead. You have the full support of this hospital. And we will provide your father with any and all resources." She explained.

"I appreciate that." Jay nodded.

"We take care of our own. This...is my cell phone. You call me if you need anything." She said to Jay and Will before walking off.

"It's decided. We're not giving up." Jay said to his brother.

Jay hadn't called or spoken to Erin since everything with his father, but Will had. He knew Jay needed someone to set him straight and if anyone could do it, it could be Erin.

Erin met Will out the front, as soon as she seen him she gave him a hug. She could tell he was on the very board of loosing it but the one reason he was holding it together was because he couldn't break down for Jay, not this time. Jay needed his older brother to be the strong one, he'd been through enough.

"Will I'm so sorry." Erin said once she has pulled back.

"Thanks Erin, also thanks for coming here. How's Lil?" He asked as they sat down on the bench.

"You don't even have to thank me. She's fine, I left her with Kim." Erin smiled.

"Are you okay? Under the circumstances."

"Just hard to believe. He was such a force." Will shrugged.

"How's Jay taking it? What should I prepare for?"

"Not good. They're a lot alike. Stubborn." Will said, as much as he hated it and as much as Jay would hate to hear it.

"If stubborn is what you call it."

"The hospitals COO Gwen didn't help, said she would use all the hospitals resources which only made Jay not want to give up even more, but Erin dads not coming back. He needs to except that."

"Okay well what can I do?" Erin said but quickly Will got up.

"Just go sit with Jay, I just need to sort something out first." Will said before rushing off.

"Okay." Erin nodded and then got up to go find Jay, not knowing what state she was about to find him in.

Erin found Jay sitting close to his dad, she nearly cried straight away with what she first saw. Pat all connected to machines and Jay squeezing his hand hard.

Erin slowly pulled up a chair next to Jay and took a seat, resting her hand on the middle of his back, "I'm here when your ready Jay."

He nodded, "He's gotta come back."

"Jay I'm really sorry but..."

"Don't." He said interrupting her.

She nodded and before she could say anything Will walked in, "Hey, Jay. Erin. We gotta take Dad off the vent."

"What?" Jay looked up, "No, no, no. He...I've been sitting with him, and he blinks his eyes. And I grabbed his hand, and he squeezed my hand. He squeezed my hand." Jay said with hope in his voice, this Jay was a Jay Erin hadn't seen before.

"Those are just reflexes. They don't mean anything." Will said.

"I'm telling you, man, he knows that I'm here."

"He doesn't." Will shook his head, Jay was unraveling.

"He can't. We can't. He's...He's gotta come back, man, 'cause...that can't be the last conversation I ever have with him." Jay said holding his tears back. All Erin could do was squeeze his hand making him aware she was still here.

"Look, whatever regrets you have, you're not gonna resolve them here. You just gotta accept that." Will said.

"Don't tell me what I got to accept." Jay said abruptly as he stood up.

"Jay." Erin said trying to make Jay aware that he needed to calm down a little.

"Jay, the reason Gwen encouraged us to take our time with Dad? His bypass was 29 days ago. If he dies before 30 days are up, regardless of why, it's a fatality for the hospital." Will explained, looking between Jay and Erin.

"So what?" Jay asked annoyed.

"So Gwen's just trying to keep Dad alive for one more day so the hospital doesn't take the hit." Will said, Erin now understood why he had run off.

"I get it. You feel betrayed. I don't care. I care about Dad." Jay shook his head.

"And you think he'd want to be kept alive to buff some numbers?" Will questioned his brother.

"You need to get out. You got to get out, man." Jay said pushing his brother out of the room with force.

"They're using him." Will said pointing to his father, his voice getting louder.

"That's your problem." Jay snapped back.

"Jay! Stop!" Erin yelled.

"Jay, he's gone." Will said and was quickly hit by Jay, his head flinging backwards suddenly. Once he realised what had just happened he could feel his lip bleeding. He wiped away the blood.

"Doc, you okay?" The security guard asked Will.

Will nodded and locked eyes with Jay, his brother was grieving and in pain, he just needed to give him more time. Jay quickly turned back and headed back into the room sitting next to his father again.

Erin stood in the hallway and rubbed Wills arm, "Will I'm so sorry. Are you okay."

"This is just him grieving, I need to give him time." Will shrugged then walked off.

After about an hour Will stepped back into the room, Erin saw him first and she quickly kissed Jays temple and left the room, "I will give you guys a minute."

Will nodded then approached his brother, pulling up a seat next to him, "We will keep him on the vent as long as you want."

Jay shook his head, "Who am I kidding man? I know he's not coming back. Let him go. Just let him go."

Will nodded as they both said their last goodbyes. All Will needed to do now was be there for his younger brother, like he hadn't been in the past.
