"Honey I'm home"
Ianto called deadpan as he stepped through the front door. Jack was curled up on the sofa with his laptop waiting for his boyfriend to get home from the restaurant. He was in the habit of waiting up for Ianto, even it was approaching midnight by the time he got in most evenings. Ianto locked the door behind him and hung his coat neatly on the hook before heading into the living room, shrugging off his shoes in the hall.
"Hey" Jack grinned up at him as he approached, "well that was cute"
"Don't get used to it" Ianto leant over the back of the sofa to press a quick kiss to the top of Jacks head, "What you working on, the book?" he nodded towards the laptop resting on Jack's lap.
"Nope" Jack grinned "Gwen's surprise proposal" he gestured with a flourish at the document in front of him, a detailed mindmap of venues, themes, drinks orders and event schedules,
"Oh wow! So that's what Rhys wanted to see you for today?"
"Yeah, wanted my approval bless him. And now he wants my help planning the perfect party"
"Oh God help us" Ianto groaned, sinking into the sofa next to Jack and closing his eyes. He was always exhausted getting home from the restaurant, but a happy kind of exhausted, like the feeling of a job well done. And coming in to a cosy loving house like the one he was making with Jack was just the icing on the cake,
"Hey! I'm a hell of a party planner" Jack said incredulously, "A night out that becomes a surprise engagement party with her favourite people, cocktails and music"
"Sure, just remember this is a proposal, not a piss up" Ianto pointed out, stifling a yawn as he spoke,
"I know! This is my best friend we're talking about, I know exactly how to play it"
"Ok if you're sure" Ianto smiled, "knowing Gwen she'd probably love all that to be fair"
"Oh yeah definitely she'll be thrilled to have all the attention"
"Yep, and I mean that in a good way. Just don't be getting any fancy ideas like that for me, public proposals aren't my style" Ianto froze as he realised what he'd just let slip, his eyes snapping open in horror. Jack startled but smiled softly, placing the laptop on the coffee table in front of him before turning back to Ianto.
"oh yeah?" Jack raised an eyebrow "given it much thought have you?"
"oh, um…. shit" Ianto blushed, "I mean we only just moved in together"
"That doesn't really answer my question" Jack teased, leaning back into the sofa, watching with amusement as Ianto turned an endearing shade of pink, watching as if he could see the cogs of Iantos brain turning furiously to find an acceptable answer.
"I…maybe it crossed my mind" Ianto mumbled, "I mean not any time soon, but someday I could…see us getting there, maybe"
Jack smiled "you're adorable when you're flustered" he reached over and cupped the Welshman's cheek, "And for the record I've thought about it too. Maybe not yet, I love how things are going with us right now. But I have no doubt in my mind Ianto Jones, that one day I'll be planning a proposal for you too"
"Maybe I'll beat you to it" Ianto grinned, leaning into Jack's touch affectionately, stopping with only millimetres between them.
"Hmm we'll have to wait and see won't we" Jack murmured as he brought their lips together softly. Ianto sighed into the kiss, his eyes heavy as he realised how tired he was. He pulled away to rest his head in the crook of Jack's neck.
"I love you" he whispered, his breathing slowing as he relaxed into Jack's shoulder. He closed his eyes as he inhaled Jack's distinctive scent, and within seconds he was drifting into unconsciousness against the man's body.
"I love you too" Jack whispered back, "I hope you know how serious I am when I say that. I want to spend forever with you Ianto, I've never felt like this about anyone and know that I never will as long as I live. You're it, everything I could ever want in this world and I hope you feel the same way about me because I'm pretty sure I cant live without you at this point"
He was met with silence, and panicked for a moment that he'd revealed too much and scared Ianto, until he recognised the change in breathing, accompanied by the tiny little snores that Ianto would be mortified to know he could produce. Jack smiled fondly as he shifted the other man away from him only slightly, gently shaking his shoulder to rouse him,
"hmm what?" Ianto murmured sleepily, his eyes half opening, looking up at Jack through his dark lashes in a way that just melted the older man,
"doesn't matter. Come on you, lets get some sleep"
Ianto nodded tiredly and took Jack's offered hand, silently accepting the man pulling him to his feet and leading him up the stairs to bed. Jack smiled to himself as he practically dragged the man behind him into the bedroom, watching lovingly as the Welshman snuggled into their bed. Maybe it wasn't time just yet for him and Ianto. But he knew without a shadow of a doubt that this brilliant, beautiful man was the love of his life. His mind was spinning with possibilities, so much so he had to reign himself in from forming an actual proposal plan. He would focus on Gwen's plan for the time being, he decided, but afterwards it would take a hell of a lot for him to wait too long to ask Ianto for his hand.
