This is a chapter from the POV of Hecate, explaining why she sided with the Titans in the Second Titan War.
Disclaimer: I don't own Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
I let out a frustrated grunt from Mount Olympus. I was watching some demigods at Camp-Half Blood, as a god tends to do. Some younger campers where being taught about the Second Titan War, including which gods chose which sides.
"Why did Hecate choose the bad side?" A nine-year-old asked the older camper who was teaching the lesson. The senior camper nervously glanced to the sky, so I decided to call on some thunder, just for effect.
The older camper chooses their words carefully. "Well... I'm sure she had her reasons..."
I scoffed. Of course, I did. All of us 'minor gods' did. We were so tired of being looked at as less superior and powerful by fellow gods- even demigods! My poor children, with no place at Camp-Half Blood, I felt much sympathy to that Hades child. No one knew half of his life, never belonging anywhere, in his opinion, his first love being taken away, a sister lost because of a quest... the list can go on.
Of course, I've asked eve myself why I formed an alliance with the Titan lord, Kronos.
I always figured it was the right thing to do. The 12 Olympian gods with thrones on Olympus, casting us 'minor gods' to the side. They're all arrogant and self-centred, always thinking about themselves. Why, Poseidon even, ah, what's that common mortal phrase? Ah, yes, 'threw him under the bus', claiming him when he was in a little argument with Zeus. I wanted power. Much more power than I had. I wanted respect from all, mortal, demigod, god. And joining Kronos was the only way, it seemed. The promise of power always entices.
Maybe, though, what I very much wanted was to prove myself. I'm the goddess of magic! Much more powerful than anyone realises, apparently. Morpheus, god of sleep and dreams, Nemesis, goddess of revenge and balance, all of us would have more power combined than those 12 Olympians! Ethan Nakamura, son of Nemesis, a wonderful demigod, full of so much potential, his talents were wasted. All because his mother had no throne and he no home in Camp-Half Blood. Fear of being forgotten by mortals, and therefore fade out of existence, was far too much for me to handle. By being part of Kronos' army, I would be remembered. Whether it be in a good or bad way, I don't know. Nor do I specifically care.
More than that: A god's greatest weakness is most likely their pride. This is usually Athena's territory, but all of us gods have a big head, some more than others (*cough, Zeus, cough*). The insult of being dubbed a minor god is nearly intolerable. If the gods that sit upon their high and mighty thrones were to be proclaimed minor gods, they wouldn't last 2 minutes. Kronos would tear down Olympus, "brick by brick", overthrow the gods that reside there and finally give us a rightful place on Olympus, high upon everything sitting in a throne.
Depending on who you ask, Zeus was merciful to 'forgive' and 'welcome back' those of us who turned to Kronos. If you ask some, the answer will be that Zeus and the rest of the Olympian council were deep in fear. Fear that we would form another union and revolt, with or without Kronos.
That one demigod, Perseus Jackson, is of a rare group. It's been revealed he felt such emotions, even sympathy, towards turned demigods and gods. Even a hero of Olympus doubts his godly family! He, too, was exhausted by being yet a pawn in the gods' chess. Oh, if he'd of joined the Titan's, how powerful we would've been...
But, Perseus made the gods promise to give all minor gods a throne on Olympus. I was certain when I first heard the news that Zeus would give us all tiny model thrones, perhaps as a prank, or just to fulfil Perseus's demanding wish. Yes, all of those seven demigods went on the quest to stop- what do they call her? -'Queen DIrt Face' (Gaea) had thoughts of rebellion against their Olympian family, to ditch the quest and run away.
Especially those two demigods. Everyone in the mythological world from gods to Cyclops' know that avoiding the Fates is like trying to avoid coughing or sneezing your whole life. Yet, the Fates must really not like Perseus and Annabeth. The latter burdened with a doomed quest from her goddess mother and both thrown into Hell as simply as rubbish in tossed. Whatever yarn the Fates used to create Perseus' and Annabeth's lives must've been extremely thread (Get it? Thready? No? Okay).
All in all, everything happens for a reason. Maybe, internally, aiding the 7 demigods in the Giant War was a way to 'redeem' myself. Was Kronos right? Did young Luke Castellan deserve the fate he'd been dealt? Maybe.
And that's how I learned that, no, I don't regret my choice to fight with Kronos' army.
So, hope you guys liked that from Hecate's POV. I always thought that the minor gods had a good reason for siding with Kronos.
This might have some conflicting points in here, like, did Kronos really believe the minor gods deserved thrones on Olympus or was that just Luke talking? I dunno. Interpret it however you'd like.
I just made a new story, the main character ship is Piper/Annabeth, if that's not your thing, that's fine, but I would really appreciate if you checked it out.
