A/N: Based off the following prompt: A Drabble about Kensi and Deeks first date since after the birth of their child. Please ️

"There's three bottles of milk in the fridge, but you shouldn't need all of them," Deeks said, turning to Kensi as she came down the stairs, tightening an earring. "Did I forget anything?"

"Well, I certainly hope not. You two are acting like I've never taken care of a kid before. You do know I raised Marty, right?" Roberta said before Kensi could respond. She shook her head in a way that suggested they were being ridiculous.

"Yeah and you also used to give me cough syrup to make me sleep."

"Wait, you what?" Kensi asked, sounding vaguely alarmed. Roberta waved her hand dismissively.

"That was one time. And, he was 12 so he was fine."

"Three times," Deeks coughed into his hand.

"Roberta, that doesn't-"

"Oh, just go and have a good time. I have this handled," Roberta interrupted, shooing them towards the door. "Go before you miss your reservation."

Kensi stepped forward and took his hand, giving him a reassuring look. Sighing, Deeks took the hint and pulled his mom into a one-armed hug.

"I know you got this, mom. I guess I'm just worried since this is our first time leaving without him."

"It'll be ok, kiddo."

"Thanks, Mom," he said, leaning down to kiss her cheek.

"We really appreciate it," Kensi added.

"Huh, are you kidding me? I'll take any chance to spend time with my grandchild," Roberts said with a roll of her eyes. Deeks pulled in another sigh and then looped his arm around Kensi's back, guiding her through the front door.

Kensi slowed slightly, turning to look back at the house.

"You gonna be ok?" he asked, feeling the urge to go back himself. She gave herself a little shake and smiled at him.

"Yeah. Or at least I will be," she said as they got in Deeks' truck. They drove in silence for a few minutes, Deeks figuring Kensi needed the time to process leaving Caleb for the first time in two months. After a little while, she turned to look at him with a glint in her eye.

"I don't think I mentioned it, but you look pretty fantastic tonight," she said, reaching out to adjust his collar. After a few months of wearing primarily sweatpants, t-shirts and jeans (but only when absolutely necessary), he'd decided to go all out. He was wearing his very best black suit and a light blue shirt he knew Kensi liked. "The ladies won't be able to keep their eyes off you."

Deeks heard a hint of doubt in her voice and glanced over at her. She was dressed in a simple black dress, her hair lightly curled around her shoulders.

"You know you look incredible too, right? You always do."

"Oh shut up," Kensi said, blushing.

"It's true," Deeks insisted.

"Well, you're biased and probably cognitively impaired from lack of sleep."

"Also true, but I stand by what I said." Kensi just shook her head, but Deeks could see a tiny smile creeping at the edges of her mouth.

They were halfway to the restaurant when Kensi reached over to where Deeks' hand rested on the console and linked their fingers together.

"I know Hetty got us a reservation at a ridiculously fancy place that we'll never have a chance of going to again and we're all dressed up, but…" she hesitated, glancing at Deeks. "I'd really love to just go to the beach instead. Maybe grab some tacos and walk on the shore."

"That actually sounds perfect," Deeks said, giving Kensi's hand a squeeze.

When they got to the beach, the sun was just beginning to go down. Kensi slipped her sandals off and slowly jogged across the sand while Deeks went to grab some food. He already had sand in his shoes, and he was totally out of place in his suit, but it was better than any five star meal.

They sat on Deeks' spread out jacket, munching on chicken tacos and watching the sun slowly sink into the edge of the water. A few people gave their overly formal clothes odd looks, but they ignored them, focused on each other.

"You know, I was a little worried that I'd spend the whole night thinking about Caleb-and don't get me wrong, I miss him-but this is really nice," Deeks said, one arm wrapped around Kensi's waist, her head resting on his shoulder.

"Mm, it is," she agreed. "I don't think we had this much time together, just the two of us, since he was born." She sighed, but it was one of contentment. Deeks pulled her a little tighter against him.

"The last few months have been some of the most exhausting, exhilarating of my life and I don't think I've ever been so happy," Deeks murmured and Kensi tilted her chin up for a kiss. When they parted, she cupped his chin in her palm.

"I love you, Marty Deeks. And I couldn't be happier either."

"I love you too," he said, grinning as he leaned down for another kiss.
