Chapter 40: Pretend Surf
"May, let us see! Let us see!" Dawn said excitedly.
May and Kiara just arrived at school and walked to the gang. It's the day after Valentine's Day and the day after May and Drew got engaged.
May stood next to Drew. "See what?"
"Your engagement ring!" Dawn answered.
May looked at Drew. Drew just smiled at May. May smiled back and looked at the gang, holding out her right hand and showing them her ring.
The gang all stared at it in awe. "It's so pretty…" Dawn breathed.
"Congratulations, you two." Gary said.
May pulled back her hand. "Thanks!"
"The gang helped me with the proposal." Drew said. "They're the ones who put the clues in their places."
May's smile faded when Drew mentioned the scavenger hunt clues. "Wow...well...thanks, guys." She said sadly.
"May, is something wrong?" Misty asked.
Drew saw May's expression from the side angle. He wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her to him, turning around May in the process. Drew embraced May in his arms, May's face resting on Drew's chest. "It's okay." Drew whispered in May's ear.
"Guys, did something happen yesterday?" Gary asked.
"Why is May sad?" Dawn asked.
Drew pulled away from May, staring into her eyes. May looked down. Drew faced the gang. "Someone tried to separate us again yesterday."
Dawn gasped. "Ruining the proposal?"
Drew nodded. "But...how did it work out then?" Ash asked.
"Someone ruined the clues I wrote." Drew started. "They changed the words to say that I never even loved May to begin with. And they also shortened the hunt. When May met me on the dock, she had tears coming out of her eyes and she yelled at me about the clues. I had a look at the clues and told her that they're fake and someone changed them. After our talk, I told her to go home since she was mad at me and stuff for thinking that I wrote those fake clues, and I started walking back to the dock to start picking up the roses and candles. May followed me and we had a sentimental talk. She apologized for thinking that I didn't love her and she asked if I could still take her on the canoe ride. I was telling myself that even if she says no to the proposal, I still wanted to propose to her yesterday of all days. I took her on that romantic canoe ride and proposed...and she said yes." He smiled at the end of his explanation.
May is still looking down at the ground, but she slightly smiled at the end of Drew's explanation.
"Wow…" Dawn breathed. "I can't believe someone almost broke you two up. Again!"
"Yeah...and I think who it was." Drew said.
May looked up at Drew.
"You do?" Kiara asked.
"Yeah. It's got to be Gabriella. She's obsessed with me." Drew said.
"Yeah...makes sense to me." Gary said.
"She tried completely erasing my memories of May and I being together and then she sabotages my proposal." Drew said. His hands clenched into fists. "I don't like fans like her."
May took Drew's hand. Drew looked at May and relaxed his hands, interlocking his fingers with May's. "Remember what you said." May said. "You said that you'd leave it alone since everything worked out in the end."
"Right. But you know how I feel about fans that try to hurt you." Drew said. "I don't like it."
"And I appreciate that protective part of you, but I'm fine. We're fine. Yesterday was so far the best day of my life because the man I love proposed to me." Drew smiled. "And I was overjoyed to say yes."
"...alright." Drew said, smiling. "You win. I'll just leave what happened yesterday in the past. No more mentioning of Gabriella from me."
May smiled. "Good."
"However…" Drew started. May's smile faded and she glared at Drew because there's a 'but' to this story. "If she talks to us, then we obviously will talk to her. But other than that, I'll try to not mention her."
May sighed. She then smiled. "That's fine by me."
"Hey Drew…" May said, looking down at a packet of papers and smiling.
"I know what you're thinking." Drew said, also looking down at a packet of papers in his hands. "The lead roles again?" He asked, lifting up his head and looking at May.
May looked up and at Drew. "If that's what you want to do." She answered.
Drew faced forward and leaned back into his chair, smirking. "You decide."
"But what if you don't like my answer?" May asked.
Drew turned his head to look at May. "It's only a yes or no answer. I'll like whatever you say."
"Okay. But what if you have trouble with the dance numbers?"
"Really?" He questioned, perking up an eyebrow at May's ridiculous question. He then got an idea in his head and he smirked, facing forward again. "Then I guess you'll have to teach me how to dance."
May blushed at Drew's response for some reason. She doesn't even know why that sentence made her blush. Something about the thought of dancing with Drew is what triggered her to blush. "Umm...I think you can handle it." She said. Drew glanced at May. "Teaching isn't really my forte."
Drew smirked. "It isn't? And here I thought that I'd get to spend some fun quality time with my fiancé. But I guess not."
May's eyebrows furrowed at Drew. "Hey! I've seen you dance before. And you don't need teaching."
"Maybe." Drew said. "But what about tap dancing?"
May's slight anger disappeared and was replaced by a smile and giggle. "Watch the movie closely, I guess."
Drew chuckled. "So...Mack. Are we going to hit the beach this spring?"
May cocked her head in confusion.
Drew turned his head to completely face May. "That's Teen Beach Movie talk for are we going to audition for the leads again."
"Ohh…" May said, giggling. "Yeah. Let's do it...Brady."
One week has passed and it's time for Spring Musical auditions. The play is to Disney's Teen Beach Movie. May and Drew are auditioning for the roles of McKenzie and Brady. They know their lines and songs and they're ready for yet another musical school play. And them being engaged is really making them better actors and performers. They definitely are showing more chemistry when they're auditioning.
May and Drew are each holding a surfboard in one hand. A water type Pokémon uses the move Surf on the stage, creating a huge wave. A psychic type Pokémon from backstage used Psychic on the wave, making it stationary. May and Drew are in front of the wave, looking up at it. Drew looks at May. He notices her expression that no one else could see since she's facing away from their small audience. May's expression is a nervous one. He's never seen May so nervous or scared in a long time.
"And music!" Teacher Lisa called.
(This song is "Oxygen" from Teen Beach Movie.)
Drew looked back up at the water that's threatening to come crashing down on them, but isn't because Psychic is holding it up. Drew now knows why May is shaking in fright. ("Water.") He thought. ("She's afraid of water. Even if we're not going swimming in an actual pool, she's still afraid of water.") He looked back at May and placed his hand on her arm.
May looked at Drew after feeling his arm on her. Drew smiled at her, causing May to widen her eyes slightly. ("He remembers.") She thought. She gave a slight smile. ("If he believes in me...then I will too. After all...I don't even have to know how to surf. I just need to have balance.")
Drew lowered his arm and they both looked to the wave of water on the stage. Drew was the first one to go running to it with a surfboard. Once he got to the water, Psychic Pokémon used Psychic on him, lifting him and the surfboard up. They held the surfboard in the wave, placing Drew on it. Drew is still in the Psychic attack, but he's moving his arms to balance himself on the surfboard as if he's really surfing in the ocean. He looked to May and gave her a slight nod.
May saw Drew's nod and she took a deep breath. Opening her eyes, she started singing. "Baby tell me, is this good for you?" She sang while running towards the wave. "Cause for me, it's a dream come true." She let go of the surfboard and got lifted up by Psychic. The surfboard was placed a few feet away from Drew in the wave and May balanced herself on top of it. May and Drew looked at each other, smiling. "I think about you boy day and night. If this is wrong, I don't care if I'm right."
The wave got split into two by Psychic. May and Drew continued keeping their balance on the surfboards as the two waves faced each other, one on the left and one on the right of the stage. "Cause I know one thing's for certain." May sang as she rode her surfboard in a diagonal line downward towards the back of the stage while Drew rode in a diagonal line towards the front of the stage. "Boy I'm not hurtin' for inspiration. And I feel when we're together," both surfboards started circling around the stage as if they're in a whirlpool. May and Drew are looking at each other as they pretend surf in circles. "It could be forever and ever and ever."
"I wanna be the ocean to your shore." May sang as the whirlpool that they created collapsed and May and Drew started falling off of the surfboards. This was all part of the play though because the Psychic Pokémon caught May and Drew before they hit the ground and they stood them up, the waves spiraling around them, covering the entire stage in water. "Bring you comfort evermore." May continued as she watched Drew pick up his surfboard and run to the waves again. "I wanna be the only thing you need." May picked up her surfboard and ran to the waves too. May and Drew are both surfing side-by-side now in the whirlpool. "Be the oxygen you breathe."
May and Drew continued getting controlled by the Psychic Pokémon. They rode the waves back and forth, side-by-side, and at times they would fall off as part of the script because that's what happens at the beginning of the movie. The Pokémon would of course keep them from hitting the floor and they'd bring them back up to the waves.
"Baby bring it all to me." May sang as she reached her hand out next to her to Drew. Drew looked at her and took her hand. "And I will warm you like the sun. I always knew you were the one."
"I wanna be the ocean to your shore." May sang as they continued doing tricks on the waves. "Bring you comfort evermore. I wanna be the only thing you need. Be the oxygen you breathe." May sang, finishing the song. At that moment, the water all vanished into thin air, leaving tiny sparkles to slowly float down along with May and Drew, landing carefully on the floor with their surfboards in hand.
"You two were incredible." Lisa said. "Amazing like always. Looks like I've found my main stars of the play."
May smiled brightly and turned to face Drew. "We did it!" She said excitedly.
Drew turned to face May and he walked closer to her, stopping right in front of her. "You did it."
May blushed and shyly looked down. "It was because you had faith in me. Even if you didn't say it, you told me through your eyes. And that's why I pulled through."
Drew reached out and took May's surfboard out of her hands. May looked up at him. "Don't be so modest." Drew said. "You would've done it perfectly even if I wasn't around." He started walking backstage with both surfboards, soon followed by May.
Backstage, Drew placed the two surfboards on a stack of more. He faced May. "Would you say that your fear of water is gone?" He asked.
"Umm...I don't know yet…" May answered. "I mean...we weren't surfing in the ocean or anything like that, so I'm sure I'll probably freeze up when face-to-face with an actual body of water still.
