Mom, Secrets And More

Chapter 40

Amanda and Jamie were in a therapy session with Dr. Pfaff that morning going over their ordeal from the Hawkins case.

Dr. Pfaff asked Jamie, "What do you recall from that night? Anything unusual happen that the police don't already know about?"

Jamie sighed and stated shrugging, "Well, I had the flu for a few days and I was finally able to have lunch, and then dinner later that night. Mom brought me cocoa before I went to bed and told me to leave my cup on the nightstand and we'd get it in the morning. For some reason, I was real tired, though. I don't know why unless it was the cocoa I had. It tasted the same. Anyway, I woke up sometime during the night and wanted to get up to go to the bathroom...But I couldn't."

Dr. Pfaff was writing things down on his pad and answered, "Why couldn't you?"

Jamie responded slowly, "Well, when I was waking up to leave my bed I found out I wasn't at home any more. I was tied to a chair in some place that was kind of cold and when I looked around the room I saw Mom across from me and she was tied up, too. I saw her head was down and she was mumbling something. When I called over to her, I had to keep talking because it was like she didn't hear me. Then I yelled and she woke up finally. It-It scared me."

Dr. Pfaff then looked at Amanda and queried, "And what do you remember, Amanda?"

Amanda commented shrugging, "He's right about the cocoa, but it was just regular cocoa-"

Jamie smiled. "No, it was your special kind."

Amanda puzzled, asked, "What do you mean?"

Jamie nodded. "You know, with your secret ingredient."

Dr. Pfaff stopped his writing to ask, "Secret ingredient?"

Amanda smiled faintly and waving it off with her hand replied, "He just means the marshmallows..."

Jamie retorted, "But they are secret from us, Mom!"

Amanda chuckled as Dr. Pfaff appeared to be confused and answered smiling to her son, "They're only "secret" because I hide them in different places around the house since you boys like to sneak them to your room."

Looking at Dr. Pfaff she stated, "I apologize for us getting off topic here...Anyway, what I remember from that night is doing last minute things before the vacation we were supposed to take. I straightened up the downstairs, locked up the house, and then I remembered seeing a book my mother hadn't finished, but I knew she'd want to read it, so I brought it upstairs with me to put it in my bag. I checked on Jamie, said goodnight, and then got ready for bed myself, and went to sleep. The next thing I remember is Jamie calling out to me but I couldn't move for some reason. And my head felt kind of fuzzy. It took me a few moments to realize that we were both taken out of our home and in some sort of cabin. There was an oil lamp on so at least we could see each other but since we were tied up, I wasn't sure how we'd get out of there or if the people that took us would come back."

Dr. Pfaff jotted down things as she spoke and asked Amanda, "What did you do then?"

Amanda sighed answering, "I was trying to think of how to get Jamie and I out of there and go for help, but then a man came in telling us we wouldn't be going anywhere until the job was done."

She recalled the events of that first night in the cabin to Dr. Pfaff...

There was a big burly man that entered the cabin and spoke to them and he smelled of whiskey.

Looking at Amanda he commented roughly, "You won't be goin' nowhere until the boss gets what he wants."

Amanda was becoming slightly nervous but not wanting to alarm Jamie queried, "Oh? And what might that be? I certainly don't have anything he'd want and neither does my son. What does he need so badly and just how does he know us?"

The man laughed and remarked, "Oh, he knows you and has been watching you and your kid for a while now. He thinks you'd be perfect for the heist he's planning."

Heist?

Amanda swallowed hard thinking, I've gotta figure a way for Jamie and I to get out of here and get word to Lee...But how?

Amanda shook her head as she returned to the present moment as Dr. Pfaff stopped writing and Jamie, looking worriedly at his mother asked, "Mom? Are you okay?"

Amanda, clearing her throat, patted Jamie's arm and nodding to Dr. Pfaff replied, "Y-Yes, Sweetheart. I'm fine. Let's continue, Dr. Pfaff...
