After about an hour Erin had to rush off and join intelligence, a Jane Doe from the fire had run off from the hospital and everyone was on the search for her. She was hurt and they had a suspicion she was somehow involved with the fire.

As they were just about to start the search Jay turned up, Erin gave him a concerned look but he done his best to ignore her, he didn't need worrying or asking him questions.

"Hey Jay, I, uh...Just heard about your father. I'm sorry." Voight said squeezing Jays shoulder.

"Thanks." Jay nodded.

"Jay, take some time. Be with your family."

"It's not what you think, Sarge. Me and my dad had a complicated relationship. We didn't really see eye to eye. I'm not proud of it. It's the truth. Five other people died in that fire. I want to help." Jay explained.

"Mmm," Voight grunted, "Okay. Platt's briefing everyone in the parking lot."

"All right." Jay nodded and made his way to everyone else but quickly Erin pulled him back.

"Jay what are you doing here?" She said shocked.

"Er I'm fine, I'm needed here."

"Come on Jay we both know this isn't where you should be." Erin said.

"I'm good Erin, trust me." Jay said bluntly pulling his arm back.

"Copy you." Erin nodded and followed after hun.

"Jane Doe, approximately 20 years old. 5'4", fled Chicago Med less than 60 minutes ago. She exited the west rear door and was last seen headed north on foot. She is believed to be all alone and hurt, so we have to move fast." Trudy explained.

"Hey, you wanna take north?" Jay said to Kim who was standing by, Erin had gone to speak to Voight and Hailey.

"Yeah. Just, Jay, I'm sorry..."

"Thanks." Jay said interrupted Kim, "So, uh, just fill me in."

Kim nodded, "Okay, she dug out her own GPS chip, so obviously she doesn't wanna be found. She has third degree burns, multiple broken bones."

"She couldn't have got out of there too fast." Jay said.

"So where would you go?" Kim asked as they started looking around.

"I don't know. Find someplace to hide. Someplace to die. You go that way, I'll go this way?"

"Yeah, I'll go over here." Kim said as they spilt up.

Suddenly Kim heard someone moaning and the bushes rustling, "Jay. JAY!" She yelled.

"5021 Eddie, emergency. We need an ambulance at the southwest corner of Bryers Park." Kim said over the radio and Jay knelt down to the victim.

"Hey, hey, hey! Hey, hey, stay with us," Jay said looking over the victim, "I don't know what's wrong. She's bleeding really bad. We need that ambulance."

"They're never gonna find us. I'm gonna flag them down, Jay. I repeat, we're in the southwest corner..." Kim said before rushing off.

"It's okay. It's okay," Jay said calmly, "Can you look at me? Hey, can you look at me? It's gonna be okay. I'm Jay. I'm a detective with the Chicago Police Department. You're gonna be okay. What's your name?"

"He came to kill them." She coughed out.

"Who came?"

"I was hiding, but he set a fire."

"Who did this to you? Who set the fire? You know who he was?" Jay said, his blood boiling.

"He killed them."

"Who? What's his name? Who was he? Who was he? Did you know him?" Jay asked wanting some answers.

"Ah...I'll be free now." She coughed out as Jay held her hand. Sirens started coming closer and closer.

"Yeah, you'll be free. You'll be free now. It's okay. It's gonna be okay." Jay said blinking back tears as he squeezed her hand.

"Come on, come on!" Kim yelled, getting closer.

Back at the district, Jay was rubbing the blood off his hands, "She said she was hiding and he came to kill them. Then before she lost consciousness, she said that she would be free now."

Erin rubbed his shoulder, "I'm running her prints and her DNA, but no ID yet."

Hailey and Adam started walking up the steps after being at the apartment building. Hailey spoke first, "Burns indicated our Jane Doe was most likely crawling, trying to escape the flames."

"Door to 20E was open. That's how the fire spread. The other John Does were found inside the apartment, one in the bed, one near the front door." Ruzek explained.

"All right, so she said that he came to kill them. So the offender enters the apartment, he kills both John Does, the Jane Doe's hiding, the offender goes to light the fire, she tries to escape, and then she gets beaten unconscious." Kim said.

"Jane Doe suffered a ulna fracture, internal injuries, third degree burns. They also treated her for heavy smoke inhalation." Erin said reading the file.

"So the offender beats her, thinks she's dead, but Jane Doe comes to during the fire, opens the front door, and attempts to crawl to the elevator." Hailey said.

"Arson was just a cover up for the double homicide," Jay said shaking his head angrily, "The rest of them were collateral damage."

"I'm guessing Jane Doe was a victim of sex trafficking. So we start with what was left behind. I want every piece of paper on that apartment who was living there, every in-service call. Just scour that crime scene. Work the bodies. Find out what the hell happened in that apartment." Voight said.

Before everyone went off to do what they needed to do Atwater hung up his phone, "Jane Doe didn't make it, that was Med. She was just pronounced."

"We know what we need to do." Voight nodded towards everyone as they got up and left.

"Hey, Sarge, OCD tech lab pulled coordinates off Jane Doe's GPS chip. I've got every place she's been the last two months outside Chicago all two of them. Tracked a farmland outside Durango, Mexico, and a compound two miles from Cleveland." Adam explained after rushing up the steps to join his team.

"We ran those coordinates for John Doe's bullet wounds, for the finger injury. Got a hit." Hailey said.

"Edgar Torres." Ruzek said as he stuck the picture up on the board.

"You're saying Edgar Torres of the Sinaloa Cartel just got hit in Chicago?" Jay said standing up in shock.

Hank looked towards Jay, "Find out what Torres was doing in Chicago, Jay."

"This is the last batch. I mean, there's hundreds of people who wanted Edgar Torres dead." Ruzek said throwing the files onto his desk.

"Hundreds who'd want him dead, but only a few who would have access. And the guy was old school no phones, did business face to face." Atwater said reading over his notes.

"That's why the DEA never got close to him. 15 years they had Torres ID'd. They could never find a way to infiltrate. Guy was a ghost." Jay said leaning back on his chair.

"Think someone was involved on the inside?" Kim suggested.

"So let's start in his inner circle. People who were loyal." Voight said.

"Yeah, people who would never roll," Jay said looking on the computer, "Carlos Mendoza, 56 years old. Been in Chicago for the past 30. DEA caught him up seven years ago, thought he was Torres' driver. Held him for 48, grilled him, and they got absolutely nothing. Carlos never said a word."

"All right, so where's Carlos now?" Voight asked stepping towards Jay.

"Lives right here in Chicago. Lives alone in Fuller Park. Also has two adult sons." Jay said.

"But we still believe he's involved with the cartel?" Ruzek questioned.

"Gets paid every week from a trumped-up LLC." Jay said pointing towards the screen.

"Ran Carlos' cell." Voight pointed to Erin.

"Pinged a tower outside Colima, Mexico a few days ago. Matches Jane Doe's GPS coordinates to a T." Erin said.

"Right, so, picked up Torres' girlfriend and the bodyguard down in Mexico and drove them all back here." Ruzek said.

"Just to sell his ass out." Jay said rubbing his neck.

"Mm-hmm." Voight scoffed.

"We got Carlos on footage. Traffic cam caught him in a silver SUV parked outside the apartment for eight hours." Kim shouted from her desk.

"Was he there during the fire?" Voight quickly questioned.

"Whole time." She nodded.

"Let's move." Voight said and they all quickly stood up.

"All right, we move careful and silent. Ruzek, Erin, you're with me. Burgess, Upton, you take downstairs. Halstead, secure the back. Do not enter. Okay? Let's go." Voight instructed to everyone.

All Erin's eyes were on was Jays, she wasn't sure where his head was at and it only made her worry.

They all went through the house, Hailey was approaching the back door when she heard noises, "Freeze!"

She looked shocked when she saw Jay standing inside the back door and quickly lowered her weapon, "What the hell are you doing? Damn it, Jay. Why did you come inside?"

"Cause I saw movement." He said looking at her with no emotions as he handcuffed the suspect.

"Jay, I almost shot you." She said angrily.

"Yeah, but you didn't, all right?"

"You broke the plan. I almost put a bullet in your head." She continued.

"Carlos was going for the back door so I had to make a move, all right? Let's go," Jay shrugged off, "Target apprehended. We're coming out."

"Copy that." They all said over the radio.

While Voight and Erin interrogated Torres, Hailey stood with Jay behind the mirror. Hoping she could get some answers or see where Jays head was at. And if she couldn't get through to him she was going to talk to Erin because this Jay worried her.

"You know, it wouldn't be a bad thing to sit this one out." Hailey said turning to Jay.

"Need me to talk to you?" Jay said annoyed as he looked at her.

"I don't need anything, Jay." She shook her head.

"All right, look, my father and I we never clicked. He didn't want me to enlist. He didn't want me to be a cop. Guy didn't even show up when I graduated from the academy. He was embarrassed. So I learned to keep my distance, and now he's gone. That's it. I'm learning how to deal with it on my own. You don't have to question if I'm all right." Jay said before walking off.

After the interrogation Hailey pulled Erin aside, "Lindsay I'm worried about Jay."

Erin sighed, "Me too, but Hailey I feel like stopping him is only going to piss him off even more."

"I'm just worried, I know the relationship with his dad wasn't the greatest but it's still clouding his judgement and he's being irrational."

"Let me talk to him okay?" Erin said.

They both made there way into the bullpen to listen to what the team had to say, then Erin knew she needed to talk to Jay, whether he wanted it or not.

"The roof next door had a hidden security camera. Facial recognition ID'd Daniel Mendoza in under a minute. Carlos' oldest son." Atwater explained.

"He's caught on this roof four times in the past week including an hour before the fire went off. All he would have had to do is hop over to the window once the fire was going. Cameras are being destroyed. People were evacuating. He could have walked out the front door." Hailey said.

"Daniel Mendoza is the black sheep out of the two brothers, in and out of behavior programs. Got kicked out of Harper College after a semester for anger issues." Jay said flicking through the file.

"Daniel's working for a trucking company that's hauling produce from Mexico to Chicago. They changed their IDOT four times in the last year. The company's owned by the same trumped-up LLC who's paying off Carlos. He's cartel. Like father, like son." Kim said.

"It's the same boss too. Torres." Jay said.

"Yeah. Huh." Voight nodded.

"You know, it could be a power play. Cartels are organizations, so if Daniel and Carlos are working beneath Torres, Torres holds their fate. If he isn't willing to promote..." Erin said.

"You get rid of him, find a new boss who is." Jay shrugged as he jumped in.

Daniels place was wired up so they had to call squad and bomb squad in, luckily the place was clear. Everyone was frustrated, he had cameras all wired up so he was onto them before they even had their sights on him.

As they were leaving Kelly Severide bumped into Jay, "Jay. Yo, I've been meaning to tell you, I'm..."

Jay stopped him, "Don't, don't. Kelly, honestly, man, you're...you're, like, the only guy that hasn't given me some half-ass sympathy speech. So you don't have to, all right?"

"No." Kelly shook his head.

"It's all good."

"I wasn't going to. I was gonna say I wanna be here when you find him. We pulled bodies out of that fire. I watched Stella almost lose her life for a cartel hit? Anything I can do to help... anything...I'll help." Kelly said.

"All right. Thanks, man." Jay said as they shook hands.

Back in the bullpen they were at a standstill, they had no idea how to get Daniels father to turn on his own son. No matter how much they pushed he wasn't saying anything.

"Juan Mendoza. He's 28 years old. He's Carlos' other son. He's got no connection to the cartel. He's married. He's got three kids. He's got a good job downtown. We pick him up, he's our access point to Carlos." Jay said holding the file in the air.

"We ran Juan. We got nothing on him." Ruzek said.

"They don't know that. Contrary to public opinion, fathers have favorites. If we squeeze Juan, Carlos rolls on Daniel." Jay said bluntly.

"Okay, it's too risky. We get Juan involved, then he's actually involved. The cartel starts gunning for him too." Erin said shaking her head, Hailey aswell.

"Yeah, man. That ain't right. There's gotta be a better way to do this." Ruzek agreed.

"Like what?" Jay snapped, looking around to hear anyone else's opinions, "Exactly. We're at a dead end, right? I don't even know why we're debating this."

"Because we're playing with an innocent man's life, Jay." Hailey said.

"Five other innocent people died because of this guy's not-so-innocent brother and father. So I'm sorry if my heart doesn't bleed like yours." Jay said snapping at Hailey.

"Excuse me?" Hailey looked at him angrily.

"Jay!" Erin tried intervening.

"Okay. That's enough. It's what we have. It's what we'll use. Bring him in." Voight said pointing at the four of them.

Jay, Erin, Hailey and Adam waited outside of the building Juan worked at. Jay was pacing back and fourth and everyone was stepping on eggshells around him.

Adam whistled to gain the others attention, "That's him."

"Juan Mendoza. Chicago Police. I'm Officer Ruzek. This is Detective Upton." Hailey and Adam approached as Jay and Erin stayed a few steps behind.

"What's going on?" Juan asked confused.

"Just wanna bring you down to the district, ask you a few questions. It's gonna be nice and easy." Adam explained.

"Questioning for what?" Juan said taking a step back.

"We'll clear all that up at the district." Hailey said.

"I don't think so." He shook his head.

"Listen, man, listen, hey. We just need to talk to you, ask you a few questions. That's all." Adam said trying to calm Juan down.

"No." He said bluntly.

"Sir, if you could please..." Adam said trying to grab Juan's arm.

"Look, I just said no." Juan said pulling back.

"You have information that can help us." Hailey said.

"I assure you, I don't."

Jay was getting frustrated this was going nowhere, he quickly stepped forward, "You know why we're bringing you in? Your family's all hooked up. Your brother..."

"Look, what my family does is of no concern to me..."

Jay interrupted him angrily, "No concern? No concern?" He started yelling.

Adam looked to Hailey and Erin concerned as he grabbed Jays shoulder trying to pull him back, "Jay, we're outside."

Jay ignored the others and only got angrier, "Mass murder's no concern to you?"

"Jay, not here, man." Adam said trying to pull him back again.

"Not when I know nothing that could help you." Juan said trying to walk away.

"We're not asking you. We're telling you...move." Jay yelled.

"Hey look, man, you just need to..." Juan spoke but before anyone blinked Jay had his arms around Juan, "Move!"

"Hey, hey, hey." Adam said breaking them up, he was grabbing Juan while Erin and Hailey were pulling Jay off.

"Jay, back off!" Erin yelled.

"It's harassment. It's harassment!" Juan yelled.

"Back off!" Erin yelled even more angrier as Jay and Juan went their seperate ways, "Keep walking. You good?"

"Yeah, I'm good." Jay nodded.

Once they had Juan, their father flipped. He didn't want the son that had done so well in life go down for his fathers and brothers mistakes.

Everyone was waiting in their positions for the location of Daniel, Jay was with Hailey and Voight, Erin wanted to be there but she had to go relieve the babysitter. And she trusted Hailey and Voight to keep an eye on her fiancé.

"Two minutes out. Be ready to move." Atwater said over the radio from the district.

Voight stepped forward and looked up at Jay who was leaning on his truck, "Jay. You're not coming."

"What?" Jay snapped back.

"Give her your keys and your two-way." Voight said pointing to Hailey.

"You gotta be kidding me." Jay said annoyed.

"It's for the best, Jay. Keys and the two-way." Voight said again before walking to his car.

"You're too close to this, Jay." Hailey said calmly to Jay.

"The hell does that mean?" He said down to her frustrated.

"He's your dad. I didn't say anything..."

Jay cut her off, "You don't know anything about my dad."

Hailey shook her head, "I'm not pretending to."

"No, you're just projecting whatever daddy-daughter crap got you screwed up." Jay said without even thinking.

"Okay, I'm done being your punching bag. Give me your keys," she said holding her hands out, not wanting to deal with his crap any longer, "Give me your damn keys!" She yelled before Jay passed her the keys, "Two-way."

Once she had what she needed she walked off leaving Jay by himself, frustrated and confused to what had just happened.

Jay pulled out his phone, "You said if I needed help that you would help. I need help."

15 minutes later and Kelly pulled up, jumping out of the car as Jay raced over, "Did you bring your radio?"

"Yeah," Kelly nodded, "You're not gonna get

a police frequency."

"That's all right. If he's shot, they're gonna need an ambo, if they're in pursuit, they're gonna shut down traffic." Jay said as he flicked through channels, waiting to hear something.

Finally, "Reports of an armed Hispanic male in the area." Came over the radio.

"That's him. He's running." Jay said as they both quickly jumped in Kelly's car and drove off.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!" The police officer at the close road yelled as they pulled up in a hurry.

"Lieutenant Kelly Severide, CFD," Kelly said showing his badge, "What's happening?"

"Man with a gun, but hey..." he started saying as he watched Jay go around the barrier.

"We got eyes on the offender?" Jay asked, lifting his shirt to reveal his badge.

"No. Last seen on foot headed eastbound, but Intelligence..."

"I'm Intelligence. Give me your radio." Jay said cutting him off.

"My radio?" The officer asked confused.

"Give me your radio, man." Jay asked again holding his hand out, the officer sighed but then handed it over.

Jay turned around to Kelly, "Kelly."

"We're good, just find him." Kelly yelled to Jay.

After walking a few minutes Jay finally made eye contact with Daniel, but he started running because he saw that Jay had noticed him.

Jay started running and he quickly unholstered his gun. He was getting closer and closer when Daniel rounded a corner, Jay didn't even think to slow down and take cover when bullets came flying his way. He shot a couple times too and thankfully Daniel hit the ground, but unfortunately so did Jay.

Jay crawled his way over and moved the gun out of reach, he was trying to catch a breath when Daniel started speaking through his laboured breathing.

"Please. Help me, please. Please. Please!" He said in between His coughing, "Help me! I wanna see my father..."

Jay was trying to catch his own breath when he turned on his radio, "This...this is 5021 George, emergency. Shots fired. Offender down. Need an ambo. Lower Wacker and Columbus. Just try to get him some help. Get him help." He choked out before rolling over in pain.

"Copy that."

Jay heard a car pull up vaguely, then footsteps running towards him, "That's Jay. That's Jay."

"5021 Henry! Officer down! I repeat, officer down. Lower Wacker and Columbus. Get us an ambulance." Hailey said as she checked Jay over and Ruzek worried about getting the area cleared.

"Jay? You okay? Come on!" Hailey said ripping his shirt open, somewhat thankful that he was wearing a vest, "It didn't go through."

"Hailey, what's going on?" Adam said approaching them.

"It didn't go through. It's okay. Jay, Jay, breathe, breathe." She said calmly, "Okay. You're okay."

Sirens started arriving on the scene, Adam rushed over, "Guys! Can you block off the street? Do whatever you gotta do to get an ambulance in, now! All right?"

"Copy that!" The other officers shouted.

After getting fixed up Jay was sitting in the back of the ambo, not sure what to think or what to focus on.

"Jay, do you hear me? You understand?" Brett said interrupted Jays thoughts.

"Yeah." He nodded.

"I still need you to go to Med to check for internal. You have no broken ribs. The bullet didn't hit anything. The second bullet that got your side was a through and through. Bruising's gonna be a bitch, though. That pain'll knock you backwards once the edge wears off." She explained, as he nodded.

Voight approached him after Brett was done talking to him, "You all right?"

"Yeah." He nodded.

"Damn lucky." Voight said bluntly.

"I..."

Voight cut him off, raising his hand, "No. You are done talking. I mean done. You should be dead. Do you get that? You do not disobey a direct order from me. I don't care how angry you are. You're mourning, grieving...man, I don't care if your whole damn family just got murdered. You listen to me! It's my job to keep you alive, to look out for you. I will always do my job, and you will always do yours and listen. That's the deal." Voight said angrily but with care in his voice and Jay understood that.

Voight took a deep breath, "When your head

is on straight...we are gonna talk about this again."

"All right." Jay nodded as Voight walked off and Hailey approached him, "Daniel?"

"He was pronounced at Med. Antonio's with Juan and Carlos. He's taking them into protective custody. DEA says bodies are already dropping in Mexico, so..." She explained.

"So a happy ending?" Jay scoffed, "Hailey, um...I just couldn't stop myself." He apologised, she got up and squeezed his shoulder, she wasn't ready to go over it all with him yet but one day she would. She knew half of what he said was out of grief and she knew one day he would apologise, until then she'd leave him be. He already was going to have Voight and Erin on his back.

Hailey walked off as she saw a very worried fiancé walking his way, she squeezed Erin's hand as she walked off.

Erin gave Jay a hug before he could say anything to her, and once she pulled back there was sadness and anger in her eyes.

"Erin, before you..."

"Let's get you to med, gotta get you check out." She interrupted hun wiping her eyes. He nodded and followed after her silently.

After Jay had gotten the all clear from the hospital, he and Will went to there fathers apartment to clear out some of his things. Keep whatever was sentimental and get rid of anything that wasn't.

Jay made his way into his fathers room with a both and started going through the drawers, after going through the top couple he pulled open a drawer that had a number of photos and articles about himself.

Photos of him graduating, photos of him in his army suit, photos of him receiving awards and many articles linked to them. That's what made him break, after all this time of him not believing his father cared maybe he actually did, but he was just too stubborn to admit it.

Will found Jay hunched over the dresser, crying, "Hey man, you good?"

"After all this time, maybe he did care." Jay said passing Will the photos.

"Wow," Will said taking a breath, "Look Jay I'm sorry about everything the two of you went through, I'm sorry for not being there when I should have, I'm sorry for everything. Not having your back. All of that."

"You here now, that's what counts. Sorry I was a dick earlier, guess sometimes I can be a little stubborn too." Jay chuckled trying to lighten the conversation.

"Sometimes?" Will chuckled getting a nudge from his brother, "How's Erin?"

"She's not as bad as she was when I lied to her about Angela but she's frustrated, I think mainly because instead of letting anyone in I took everything out on everyone, I hurt a lot of people over these last couple days." Jay sighed.

"Grief can do that to people." Will shrugged.

"I just wish I didn't do it to the people that are only trying to help me."

"Just apologise, that's all you can do. And hope they can understand."

"Yeah I guess," Jay nodded, "Anyway what do you say about grabbing a beer? Toast one to the old man?"

"I think he'd like that." Will smiled.

After a few beers Jay made his way home, he found Erin waiting up for him. He walked up to her and sat down, hoping she would talk to him.

"I'm really sorry Er."

"It's not me you have to apologise to, you really hurt Hailey." Erin said.

"Yeah I know, I will make it up to her." Jay nodded, ashamed of himself.

"I think you should also give that little girl of yours a hug and remember how lucky you are to have her in your life. Remember you have her to think about at the end of the day too, you can't be so reckless." Erin said as she got up.

"I just couldn't help myself I'm sorry." Jay apologised again.

"I heard Voight had a few words with you aswell."

"If you want to call it that."

"Jay I think it's a good idea you go to therapy again, just for a little while to clear your head. I don't want this to lead you into another dark hole."

"Erin I don't need to..."

"It's not up for discussion," Erin said interrupting him, "Voights already made it mandatory, take it up with him."

"Okay." Jay nodded as he watched Erin walk off. Once again he pushed her away and once again it was all his fault.

The next morning Jay organised to meet Hailey for breakfast, he had some apologising to do. He waited patiently as he sipped on his coffee.

"Morning Jay," Hailey said as she sat down, "Thanks for the coffee."

"Hailey I'm really sorry for everything I said to you, I had no right."

"I know you didn't mean it." Hailey said shrugging it off.

"Still doesn't give me the right to treat you like that, especially when your only trying to help me, that's all you have ever tried to do."

"It's cause I love you Jay, your my best friend."

"I love you too Hailey, I'd do anything for you, you know that." Jay replied.

"I know, that's why I know you meant no harm by what you said, it was just grief."

"I have to go back to therapy." Jay sighed.

"Do you really think that's a bad idea?" Hailey asked.

"No I guess it's for the best," Jay shrugged, "Gotta get my head screwed on. Once again. Otherwise I don't know how long I'm going to have a fiancé."

"So Erin isn't taking it very well then?"

"She's taken it better then I thought but I think she is just putting up a front because she feels like she has to be strong for me and it shouldn't be like that."

"Sounds like someone I know. Even though you claim to be different from one another you each have a lot in common."

"Your not wrong." Jay chuckled.

"How's miss Lily?" Hailey smiled.

"She's so close to putting words together it's crazy, can't believe she's 10 months old."

"That is crazy, I think we all need a catch up. She has everyone wrapped around her finger."

"We defiantly do."

Another tough storyline for Jay. I swear after this he won't be in the wrong for quite some time. Maybe Erin next? But not for a while. Does anyone want to see something in particular? I hope everyone's enjoying!
