Chapter 34

Amelia was sitting on the floor crying. Jason had left the room in a hurry to visit the Knight's residence. Adam ran over to Amelia and wrapped his arms around her.

"Amelia! Amelia! It is alright! Just leave it be ok?"

Amelia looked at him astonished, "I can't do that Adam…they have helped us so much. I can't let them hurt this family Adam. No one should have to pay for our sins except us."

"Amelia! They are paying you for a job. As soon as they are finished with you, they will toss you to the side. You mean nothing to them. We only have each other, Amelia."

Amelia sobbed and covered her face with her hands. It had been like this since childhood. Amelia and Adam's parents were abusive. Amelia is the oldest child. She always had a delightful taste of the arts and always wanted to pursue a career in writing even when she was little. Books helped her escape her awful reality. Books brought her peace. Their mother was a prostitute and was gone most of the time. Their father was a raging alcoholic who didn't work a regular job. He worked for the mafia in town until he could repay all his gambling debts. When Adam was old enough, the father forced him to work for the mafia as well. Inevitably, this lead to Adam's drug addiction, but that is how the mafia does it. You are hired on with promises of paying off the debt and money, and then they hook you on drugs, gaming, or their prostitutes. The end result being you stay indebted to them your whole life. Amelia saw the pattern and ran away. She ran away and lived on her own for a while, homeless. She had excellent grades however and managed to score a dorm room. She effectively erased that part of her life away. Every now and then she would think of the brother she had left behind and feel guilty. One day the guilt was practically unbearable and she went back to that house she swore to never enter again and took her brother away.

Of course, keeping a drug addict/alcoholic in the home came with some prices to pay. He started taking things and selling them for more drugs. Eventually, Amelia was struggling and selling what she could just to keep up with the payments on the house and to keep her brother's health bills up. In a way, he blamed her for leaving him there, but he never truly wanted to leave in the first place. Unfortunately, the mafia's right hand man Jason found then and began acquiring monthly payments from Amelia to pay off her brother's debt….or else….

Amelia was beginning to think that it was all over, this was the end. But, almost as if God himself heard her prayers, the Knight's family moved in. Amelia applied as quick as she could. She kept it hidden that her brother lived with her and kept her family hidden as a dark secret. But she truly loved this family. She thought of them as the family she wished she had growing up. She saw the smile on Henry's face everyday, the elegant Dr. Knight, and his beautiful wife always by his side.

And now…that same family was about to be heavily involved in the mafia whether they wanted to or not. But Amelia was not about to let that happen.

"Adam. I have to go." Amelia stood up and began to walk out of the house until Adam grabbed her and jerked her back.

"No! Amelia, leave it be!"

"No Adam! It will never be enough. Someone has to stop this. I have cared for you and cared for you, but….I just…I can't do this anymore Adam."

Amelia kneed her brother in the groin and pushed him back against the wall and ran out of the house. Adam was doubled over in pain and tried running after her.

"Amelia! Get back here!"

He couldn't keep up. He had been detoxing from all the drugs he was on for the past few days and as a result he was weak. He saw Amelia head towards her old car, but the tires had been slashed. No doubt that it was Jason. So she kept running away from her brother.

Amelia ran towards the street and started looking for any means of transportation. She remembered a little girl who lived up the road who owned a bicycle. So she ran towards the little girl's home in pursuit to save the Knight Family from Jason.

…Little did she know that it was Jason who needed saving.

Jason parked a little ways from the house and watched in jealousy. It was an older stone mansion that had been beautifully restored. He watched the lights dance through the windows and waited until he was sure he could locate where each of the family members were in the house. He stepped out of his car and crept around the back.

"Fucking rich pricks. Let's see…Amelia said it was just the man, woman, and child."

He glanced through a smaller side window and could see the woman and child sitting at the table talking while the husband stood with his back turned at the small island in the middle of the kitchen chopping up some food with a large knife.

He could faintly hear the woman talking to the man before she stood up and walked over to kiss him. Then she returned to the table and grabbed their son. She carried him up the stairs and Jason smiled.

"Perfect, I shall take the woman and child first. They will be leverage against the man."

Jason began to slowly creep around the house to find a point of entry to ascend to the second floor. He walked around searching the walls for anything to use as a foothold to climb up. He then heard a low rumble from behind him. He froze in his tracks and turned around to see Max the German Shepard. Max growled and sneered his teeth and attacked Jason, biting him sharply on the leg.

"Fucking Amelia didn't say anything about a damn dog! That bitch!"

Jason reached for his gun first and decided against it because of the noise. He then reached or his knife, but Max was jerking him around.

A faint whistling sound came from behind Jason and Max immediately let go running towards the sound.

Jason scrambled and turned around to see the face of the man from the kitchen smiling.

"I would say welcome to our home, but you are not welcome here."

Jason stood up slowly on his injured leg, and pulled out his gun to point it at the man, "Get your fucking hands up."

Max growled as he stood behind the man's legs.

"Sshhh quiet Max. Go lay down."

Max immediately stopped growling and walked around the building.

"I said get your fucking hands up."

"Ah yes! Of course." The man raised his hands up slowly, but that smile never faded.

"What is your name?"

"You don't know?"

Jason was getting angry, "What the fuck is that supposed to mean, just answer the damn question! This is supposed to be the Knight's residence right? So I take it your Mr. Knight."

"Doctor, actually. "

"Well Doctor, get the hell back in the house and I will be right behind you."

The Good Doctor turned around and began walking back into the house with his arms still raised. Jason was in a panic, but he decided he would use the husband as leverage against the woman and child instead. But something didn't set right with Jason. This man had no panic in his voice, he was under no stress, and he was even mocking him when a gun was pointed at him. Why?

When they walked back inside the woman was sitting at the table alone eating the fresh cut strawberries her husband had just chopped. She licked the juice off the top of her finger. She was dressed in a tight black shirt and loose fitting black bottoms.

"You should have told me you were inviting guests in, I could have poured us some wine."

"Apologies my Love. It would seem that he wants to lead this evening's schedule."

Jason lost it, "Shut your fucking mouths. I have a gun pointed at the back of your husband's head. One shot and I could blow his brains out. Now where is that little shit of a kid?

She frowned, "Do not refer to our son that way or you will regret it."

Jason laughed, "You dumb bitch! I am the one that holds the power I am-"

And in that moment, the Good Doctor spun and grabbed the hand holding the gun slamming it against the kitchen table. He dropped his gun and then the Doctor slammed Jason's head against the countertop. He was losing consciousness, then it all faded to black.

When Jason woke again, he was tied to a chair. Ropes compressed his chest making it hard to breath. Handcuffs confined his hands, and his legs were tied by ropes as well.

In front of him stood the man and woman from earlier.

"What….what the hell is going on?"

"Ssshhh" the man spoke. He raised a knife in front of Jason and his eyes flashes with panic. "You ask too many questions. I will be the one asking you questions. Depending on your answers, I may answer a few of your questions after. Now then, let's start with who are you?"

"My name is Jason."

"Ah Jason, very well. Do you know who we are?"

"Yes…the Knight family correct?"

"Hhhmmm interesting."

The woman spoke next, "I told you Dear. He brought no men, drove a nice car up here and parked it just down the road, and all he had on him was a gun and his knife. None of his actions speak that he knows of us. He didn't even have a proper entry way planned. Clearly he is used to using brute force to get his way."

"Although, his gun isn't exactly standard issue. And neither was the gun in his car. He has more access than the common criminal. Drug dealer or part of some gang perhaps?"

"Wh-what?? What is this?? Are you guys fucking cops or something?"

At that, the couple laughed, "Far from it."

"What are you gonna do to me?"

"Well," the man walked behind Jason and leaned over in his ear, "you are the guest of honor. My wife and I, would love to have you for dinner."
