Chapter 90 [Kent Farm—Next Morning]
Clark stretched in bed. Sleep allowed his body to heal. He stared at the ceiling. I hope Spider-Man's okay wherever he is. That creep sure beat him up. I felt that backhand. He saw Dawn's first colors on the horizon. "Chores and then school." He changed into his chore clothes and came down the stairs.
"Morning, Son." Jonathan glanced up from his coffee mug at the kitchen table. Martha was already frying up breakfast on the stove. "Got a minute?"
Trepidation tensed at Clark's heart and mind. Now what? "Sure. I was just going to do chores."
"Chores can wait, Clark." She had four plates going.
"We've got company?" Clark noticed a set of headlights coming up the driveway. "At 5 AM?"
"I asked Lana to come for breakfast." Martha set the juice pitcher on the table. "We just wanted to make sure everything was all right."
"We're okay, Mom. I mean other than Mr. Dubois going ultra-Halloween on us yesterday." Clark went over to the door. He saw Lana get out and come up the front walk. He opened it. "Hey, Lana!"
"Hi, Clark." Lana smiled. "Know what's going on?"
"I have an idea but let's see how this goes." Clark ushered her inside. "Why don't you take a seat at the table?"
"Hi, Mr. and Mrs. Kent. Thanks for breakfast. Hope you're okay." Lana took her shoes off and hung her coat up on the hook. "Mrs. Kent, can I help you?"
"I'm fine, Lana. Thank you. Why don't you take a seat? Clark, can you help me please?" Martha finished plating the meal at hand.
"Sure, Mom." Clark helped to get the meal onto the table. Then he took his usual seat. "What's going on?"
Jonathan took another draught from his mug. "Kids, what exactly happened yesterday? How did you get involved in that?"
"Dad, we told you what happened last night." Clark frowned. "What was I supposed to do? Let Spider-Man get killed by that guy?"
"I won't say you're wrong, Clark. Of course, we should help someone like that." Martha pondered the thought. Then she pressed on. "The problem is we told you that creature is more than you can handle. You're extremely lucky. Now we also have Lex and Chloe knowing about you."
"Mrs. Kent, I did call Lex for help after Clark rushed off. Clark didn't know he'd be there. I didn't think Chloe would be coming up at that point. I spoke to her last night at the house. She'll keep the Secret." Lana cleared her throat. "I did get to check on Spider-Man last night. According to Lex, he's got a separated shoulder, strained ribs and a broken arm. It would be worse if not for Clark, Jasmine, and Mr. Dubois' inner demon."
"At least he's alive. He'll recover. And he wanted everyone to know that he's keeping the Secret too." Lana gulped on her coffee.
"We appreciate that, Lana. I don't agree with the vigilantism. He's helped the town twice since he's been there. He's also a target. I want you both to be careful if he's anywhere nearby. Am I clear?" Jonathan took a big bite of his scrambled eggs.
The teens both nodded.
"Clark, there was one other thing." Lana smiled. "He figured out you were the one who saved Gwen at the Talon that night. He says thank you."
"Nobody saw you?" Jonathan raised an eyebrow. His mouth set in a deep line.
"I couldn't let her die. I tried to be careful. Okay?" Clark shook his head.
Sometimes parents just didn't get it….
