Chapter 34: Z-Bond Shuriken

Ash supposed that everyone had probably expected it would come down to this. As he took a deep breath, taking his position on his platform opposite Anton at the other end of the battlefield, Ash looked around the arena. The crowd's cheers were louder than ever now, expecting this to be the ultimate clash as the two Battle Team captains finished off this fight. Ash hoped they were right, and with the look in Anton's eyes, Ash was pretty sure they were all going to get what they hoped for. This rivalry was different now than when it had started. The desire to win was no weaker, but the respect Ash and Anton had for one another had grown. Now, it was time to put it all out onto the battlefield with their Pokemon, and see who would come out on top. Their newfound friendship wouldn't make this battle a light affair. No, it would make this fight more heated than ever before.

Anton still had his Vivillon out, the bug type still looking strong and ready to battle despite its fight with Elekid. Ash had been surprised at how strong it was when they'd battled Raphael. It had seemed even more threatening against Elekid. Now that Vivillon was back with Anton and the two of them had been given their chance to resume their partnership, they were a deadly team. Ash needed to respond appropriately.

"Pikachu," he said, grinning as he looked out on the new rock field in front of them, "I choose you!"

"Pika!" the electric mouse shouted happily, leaping out from the platform and landing atop a taller rock jutting out just in front of Ash. His cheeks sparked in anticipation as Vivillion flew lower to the ground. The referee raised his arm.

"All right, ladies and gentlemen!" Robby announced excitedly. "It's time for an epic showdown between the captains of our finalist teams! Who will lead their squad to championship glory? Anton or Ash? I hope you're ready for this one!"

The crowd roared in excitement, the field seemingly shaking from the cheers. As the referee waved his arm, Ash could hear his friends cheering louder than anyone. He couldn't have asked for better motivation. "Let the battle begin!"

"Pikachu, Thunderbolt!"

"Vivillon, Signal Beam!"

A jet of electricity met a beam of green energy at the centre of the field. Rocks that were nearby instantly cracked from the impact, the crowd gasping at the force of the two attacks. Both Pokemon strained against the other, trying to force their attacks forward, but unable to budge the other. After a few more moments of sparks, rocks and smoke shooting out from the centre of the field, both released, panting from the effort.

"Well folks, if that isn't an opening pair of moves to set the tone for a great finish, what else is?" Robby called out excitedly. "These are two Pokemon that don't want to give in whatsoever!"

"I've wanted a chance to battle some of your other Pokemon ever since I saw them training in Laverre, Ash," Anton called out, grinning as the dust settled. "Your Pikachu is awesome."

"Vivillon's great, too," Ash said, voice shaking with excitement. This battle was already proving to be special. "You two are a real team."

"We've got even more to show you," Anton promised, glancing quickly over his shoulder to where Gabby stood among the rest of their team, holding his Fletchinder. Ash could see how happy it was to see his old friends doing so well in battle. When Anton looked back, he looked even more determined. "Aerial Ace!"

"Quick Attack!" Ash countered.

They both knew this was where it truly began. Both Pokemon darted forward. Vivillon flapped its wings, using gravity to descend towards Pikachu, while the electric mouse kicked hard off of some stones to fire himself into the air. The two of them crashed into each other, a shock wave resounding through the arena, each of them crying out from the effort of pushing through with their attack.

"Iron Tail!" Ash ordered, hoping to quickly take advantage of the two being in close. Pikachu did just that, swinging around, his tail shining brightly with increased power.

"Chuuu pika!" he cried out, slamming his tail hard into Vivillon's chest.

Vivillon proved there was no doubt in it being fully recovered from its time with the hunters, however, and steadied itself quickly in midair. Ash had seen its work with Clemont and Korrina, though. This was a swiftness Anton had helped it with.

"Hurricane!" Anton commanded, thrusting his palm forward.

The gust of wind was one of the strongest Ash had seen. Pikachu was slammed to the ground by the force of it, skidding along the rocks until crashing up against a larger one jutting out from the ground. Even as he held up against it, though, wind drove into him, driving further smaller rocks towards him.

Ash knew Pikachu was going to need firmer footing to get out of this and quickly an idea came to him. "Pikachu, Iron Tail into the ground!"

"Pika!" Pikachu cried out in response, his tail lighting up and slamming downward.

Ash grinned. It was still a tough spot, but Pikachu was no longer scrambling against the ground as he was pushed back into the rock. With both able to hold him in place, they could fight back. "Thunderbolt, now!"

"Chuuu!"

It was still clearly a struggle, but the electric mouse pushed through. As Vivillon attempted to keep the powerful wind pushing forward, a bolt of electricity rushed towards it. The Hurricane attack halted quickly, the sound of rushing wind halting as Vivillon convulsed in midair from the strike. It sagged in the air, body smoking as Pikachu readied himself for another attack.

"Quick Attack!" Ash then shouted, hoping to keep the pressure on. Vivillon's previous battles were taking their toll now. This was their chance.

Pikachu darted forward, too fast for Vivillon to react to as it tried to recover. The electric mouse drove his body hard into Vivillon's chest, sending it flying back further, panting from the effort of staying in the fight.

Anton wouldn't give in, though, smiling encouragingly at his Pokemon. "Signal Beam, Vivillon! Full power!"

Pikachu was vulnerable, still in midair from his Quick Attack, and he and Ash could see there was no defence. The green beam of energy rushed towards him, exploding against him and dropping him to the ground in a cloud of smoke. "Pikachu!" Ash called out in concern, hearing the gasps from the crowd, while Robby shouted in surprise.

"Now, get in there with Aerial Ace!" Anton ordered, grinning in anticipation. Clearly he felt the battle was his.

Ash didn't think so. "Pikachu, Iron Tail right now!"

"Viii!" Vivillon cried out as it darted forward, folding in its wings as it neared Pikachu at lightning speed.

"Chuuu PIKA!"

The Iron Tail swung out with perfect accuracy, Pikachu emerging from the smoke of the previous attack with fierce determination. He had to strain against Vivillon a moment, but he had just enough of an edge in stamina. The bug type was sent flying back, hitting a rock and weakly fluttering its wings as it attempted to fly up. Pikachu was ready to finish it, though.

"Thunderbolt! Let's wrap this up!" Ash ordered, pumping his fist triumphantly as he heard his friends cheering behind him.

"Chuuu!" Pikachu cried out, charging up the electricity, before unleashing the bolt of yellow lightning forward.

Anton had one last counter as the attack approached, though. "Struggle Bug!"

"Viii!" Vivillon cried out in answer, appearing to smile as the Thunderbolt rushed towards it. As it was struck, a burst of green light shot out at Pikachu, knocking him back a few feet and making him shake his head in surprise. He seemed okay, though, and watched on as Vivillon dropped to the ground.

"Vivillon is unable to battle! Pikachu is the winner!" the referee declared, floating down on Aegislash. "Laverre University will now select their next Pokemon."

As Anton recalled Vivillon, looking pleased with his bug type's performance, Robby sang its praises, the crowd cheering along. "An incredible job by Vivillon in this battle!" the announcer shouted. "Taking down Clemont's Elekid, while putting up a fierce fight against Pikachu, Vivillon has helped his team push Lumiose to their limits. Who knows what we'll see next?!"

Ash glanced back to see Clemont enthusiastically applauding Vivillon's efforts as well, Korrina doing so, too from the stands. Those two were a huge reason why Vivillon had been able to participate in this match and it must've felt good to see it thrive. And for everyone else, it was a further sign of their victory over the hunters. Vivillion was proof those guys couldn't win.

"It was an honour to battle against Vivillon, Anton," Ash said, looking across at his opponent. "I'm glad it could be here today."

"We needed each other to be at our best today," Anton said with a smile. "It's like old times. This battle will only get better, Ash." He pulled out his next pokeball. "Marowak, you're up!"

The pokeball flashed brightly in front of Anton, and a moment later, his ground type was there. It looked intimidating, narrowing its eyes and spinning the bone it held in anticipation of the battle. Ash knew from things Anton and Gabby had said that this Marowak was likely only second to his Scizor in strength. The battle against the hunters had provided a great deal of evidence of that.

"Think you can keep going, Pikachu?" Ash asked, readying himself to continue.

"Pika!" Pikachu nodded, dropping to all fours in preparation to fight. He'd never give up the chance to fight a strong opponent. Vivillon had done a great deal of damage, though. They would have to be careful. Especially with the type disadvantage. What better way to be careful, though, than to attack head on?

As soon as the signal was given for the match to resume, Ash made his order. "Quick Attack, let's go!"

"Bonemerang!" Anton countered, him and his Marowak narrowing their eyes as Pikachu kicked off at full speed.

As Pikachu rushed forward, a white glow around his body as he picked up momentum, Marowak aimed his bone, preparing his throw. He threw just as Pikachu leaped forward, heading straight for the ground type with everything he had. The bone whipped forward, spinning rapidly towards Pikachu, looking like it would smash right into his head.

Ash grinned, knowing it wouldn't hit. Pikachu spun expertly, narrowly sliding past the bone as it flew in the opposite direction. Marowak had nothing to defend himself as Pikachu continued his rush towards him. The electric mouse barrelled into the ground type, sending him crashing to the ground, before hopping back, ready for Ash's next order. Ash hesitated, though, seeing Marowak scramble to his feet, holding a hand up and smiling.

"You know what a boomerang does, right Ash?" Anton asked with a laugh.

Ash's eyes widened, suddenly noticing something rushing towards Pikachu's back. "Pikachu look-"

It was too late, the spinning bone slamming hard into Pikachu's back on its return path to Marowak. Pikachu was sent face first into the dirt, grunting from the pain. Anton and Marowak didn't let up.

"Double Edge now!" Anton ordered, his old firmness on display as he took command of the battle.

"Marowak!" Marowak responded, charging forward, the crowd going silent as they watched. "Wak!" He slammed hard into Pikachu, sending the electric mouse flying back, before quickly retrieving the bone and preparing for Anton's next order.

"A stunning display by Marowak!" Robby shouted in excitement while the Laverre supporters cheered Anton on. "Speed, strength and precision all in one!"

Ash knew he and Pikachu would need to be aware. Marowak was as strong as he'd been led to believe. Stronger, perhaps, and now his trainer fought with a clearer head. Well, Ash and Pikachu were strong, too. And they could fight in ways nobody would expect.

"Time to get even more fired up, Pikachu!" Ash yelled, Pikachu nodding as he got to his feet. "Iron Tail, let's go!"

"Pika!" Pikachu took off towards Marowak, and he and Anton seemed taken aback by the speed and ferocity of Ash's most loyal Pokemon.

He reached Marowak in an instant, swinging his glowing tail out, narrowly missing as Marowak pulled back. Within moments, the two were engaged in a strange dance, Pikachu giving chase as he swung again and again with his tail, Marowak ducking and dodging each time. Eventually, Pikachu backed Marowak up to a large rock jutting out of the ground, and he cried out as he flipped over, slamming his tail down towards Marowak.

"Waaak!"

Ash narrowed his eyes and the crowd gasped as Marowak jumped, flipping backwards and narrowly sliding past Pikachu's Iron Tail. He landed perfectly atop the rock, looking down as Pikachu's tail drove into the ground underneath the rock. A small crack extended upwards, but Marowak remained unharmed, with Pikachu vulnerable right underneath him.

Anton grinned. "We have you now. Bone Rush, Marowak!"

"Not so fast!" Ash answered with a grin of his own. "Electro Ball!"

Anton looked surprised, and so did Marowak as he raised his bone up, preparing to strike. Pikachu straightened up as he cried out, the crack in the rock lighting up. A moment later, the rock shattered, sparks shooting out as Pikachu was freed, Marowak falling backward, his footing gone.

The Lumiose fans cheered the move, but Ash frowned, exchanging a surprised look with Pikachu. That Electro Ball had helped, but he'd hoped for it to do much more than simply lose Marowak his footing. Then Ash remembered, seeing Marowak step back, ready for Pikachu's next move. Vivillon's Struggle Bug attack at the end of its fight with Pikachu must've lowered his power.

It wouldn't change much. Marowak was immune to electric attacks anyway. But, Ash always liked to be able to use his attacks in indirect ways if they couldn't work normally. He clenched his fists, frustrated. He couldn't help but smile, though. Anton was the kind of opponent he liked to battle because of things like this.

"Vivillon likes that little trick," Anton said, looking back at Ash, apparently knowing what he was thinking of. "It was a favourite way back after it first evolved."

"Pikachu and I know a few tricks of our own," Ash said in answer. "Thunderbolt straight down!"

Pikachu acted immediately, charging his cheeks and firing off the electricity. It cracked the rocks beneath him, and carried him a little higher in the air. It wasn't quite like normal, but they could still make it work.

"Now, Iron Tail! Back to back and keep it going!" Ash ordered, pointing ahead.

"Chuuu PIKA!" Pikachu cried out, striking the ground hard with Iron Tail, bringing dozens of small stones into the air as the groud cracked and shook beneath him. Then, he began to swing at them.

Anton realized too late. "Bone Rush, now!"

The stones began to rush towards Marowak. With quick reaction speed, he was able to swing out with his bone, knocking aside a few stones, but Pikachu sent them forward too quickly. Within moments, he was being battered, stumbling back as the stones struck.

"Now, Quick Attack!" Ash ordered, pumping his fist. Pikachu looked just as pleased.

"Pika!" he cried out, taking off towards the dazed Marowak. He reached the ground type in an instant, crashing into him and sending him to the ground.

Anton and Marowak were quick to fight back, though. "Bonemerang!"

"Deflect with Thunderbolt!"

The bone rushed towards Pikachu, Marowak having thrown it with an expert spin. Pikachu quickly charged his cheeks, sending out the electricity. Unfortunately, the weakened electricity only held the bone back and slowed it down. It might have been enough against someone else...but not against Anton.

"Double Edge!" the Laverre captain ordered, Marowak breaking into a run on his command. He plucked his bone from the air as he did so, before smashing into Pikachu at full force. With no recoil from the move, his ability being Rock Head, they easily followed up as Pikachu hit the ground. "Stomping Tantrum!"

"Waaak!"

With Pikachu vulnerable before him, Marowak had no trouble descending on him. He stamped his foot once, twice and three times, dust firing up each time. Eventually, the dust settled.

"Pikachu is unable to battle! Marowak is the winner!"

As the Laverre fans cheered and Robby excitedly commented on the match, Ash ran forward. He reached Pikachu quickly, scooping him up in his arms before turning around and returning to his platform. He smiled down at his exhausted partner Pokemon.

"You did great, Pikachu," he said happily. "You tired out one of Anton's toughest Pokemon and beat another. When we win, it'll be thanks to you as much as the others!"

Pikachu smiled back at that as Ash put him down and turned back to face Anton. "Pikapi..."

"I'll still need your help, buddy," Ash said, pulling out his next pokeball. "We've got a long way to go, and I need your support."

"Pika!" Pikachu said, nodding in determination.

Ash grinned, looking down at his pokeball and then glancing back at the stands, locking eyes with Serena. Her smile of support and Pikachu's determination filled him with strength. His next Pokemon wouldn't be as strong as he was without Serena. It was like having her on that platform at his side as he threw the pokeball forward.

"Lucario, I choose you!"

Serena's heart raced as Lucario emerged in a flash of light, the Aura Pokemon smiling and looking around as he embraced the excitement of the crowd. He restrained himself from posing too much, but he did flex his muscles a bit, before doing a backflip to show how ready he was. Hawlucha's influence was still there. Serena was glad he hadn't changed too much from the way he was as Riolu.

"Lucha lucha!" the Wrestling Pokemon cried out from the balcony where the Battle Team watched. He felt himself to be an honourary coach when Lucario fought. Lucario felt so as well apparently, smiling as he turned back briefly.

Korrina had offered to let Ash borrow her Mega Stone and Key Stone to let Lucario Mega Evolve this battle. Serena felt it was to make up for the nearly disastrous Mega Evolution against Raphael. Ash had declined of course. Lucario did as well. They liked doing things their way. Serena was proud of them for it.

"Go get 'em Lucario!" she then cheered, waving as Lucario glanced back at her and waved. She was so happy he had a chance to be on this stage. He loved the excitement.

"This should be a fierce battle, folks!" Robby then said to the crowd, Lucario and Marowak preparing themselves as the referee signalled the match was about to begin. "Whoever wins this match will be in position to seal the deal with one more victory. We're in the stretch run, now!"

And with that, the signal came and the battle began.

"Lucario, Quick Attack!"

"Marowak, Double Edge!"

Serena held her breath as she watched both Pokemon take off. Lucario was faster, firing off like a bullet, but Marowak looked steadier, his powerful skull aimed straight ahead. They collided with a massive crash at the centre of the field, a shock wave rippling outwards and shattering a few nearby rocks. The crowd burst into excited murmuring.

Both Ash and Anton were quick to follow up, Ash ordering a Metal Claw, while Anton called for a Bone Rush. Once again, the force of their attacks shook the rocks around them, Lucario's glowing fist slamming hard into Marowak's swinging bone. They strained hard against one another, before both were shoved back, sliding along the ground, panting from their first exchanges.

"They're pretty evenly matched," Dawn murmured from a couple seats down, eyes narrowed as she focused. "That Marowak is tough to be able to have this much energy after fighting Pikachu."

"Lucario's pretty impressive, though," Korrina said. "I'm surprised it's this strong after just evolving."

Serena smiled at that, looking down towards the Aura Pokemon. He was a special Pokemon to her and Ash. They'd raised it together. Now was his chance on the big stage to see how far he'd come with their guidance.

"All right, Lucario," Ash then called out, the others straightening up in interest as the next stage of the fight neared, "let's keep it up. Aura Sphere!"

"Ru!" Lucario nodded, pulling his arms back and to the side as he leaped atop a large rock, forming the blue sphere as he kept his gaze on Anton's ground type.

Anton still seemed willing to engage directly, eyeing Lucario as he called his counter. "Bonermerang!"

Then, both Pokemon fired, Lucario's blue sphere launching forward as Marowak's bone spun outwards. The two attacks clashed between them, dust and smoke exploding outwards from the collision. Apparently it was just as Ash expected.

"Drain Punch, now!"

"Ruru!"

Serena blinked in surprise, seeing Lucario suddenly descending from the sky, fist pulled back in preparation for his attack. Marowak and Anton looked stunned, only able to watch as Lucario struck the former, his glowing fist sending Marowak flying backwards. Both glowed briefly a moment later as Lucario gained a small energy boost.

They weren't quite done, though, as suddenly, the crowd gasped as Marowak struggled to his feet, looking up with a smirk as he raised his arm. It looked as though he was ready to catch something. Ash knew what it was already, and this time, he was ready.

"Metal Claw!"

"Ru!"

Lucario spun expertly, using the grace of the performing moves he'd practiced with Serena. Marowak's bone, spinning back to him, was struck, its momentum sped up as it rocketed back.

"Wak!" Marowak fell backward as his own bone slammed into his face, groaning as he turned over from the strike. Serena was surprised at how drained he was looking, while still being able to fight. His battle with Pikachu had tired him out, and Lucario was now pushing it further, but Marowak was as stubborn as his trainer could be.

"Hang in there, Marowak!" Anton called out. "Bone Rush with everything you've got!"

"Metal Claw, one more time!" Ash countered, Lucario straightening up as Marowak scrambled to his feet.

Then, the two rushed forward once again, Marowak holding his bone up, ready to strike, while Lucario had his arm raised, glowing with increased power. Once again, they reached one another and clashed with everything they had, a shock wave rippling outwards again, causing the crowd to gasp and murmur excitedly. Serena kept her focus on the two Pokemon, though, wanting to see if either would let up.

Surprisingly, neither did. Marowak was definitely a little more tired, but somehow he held on long enough for both Pokemon to give one final shove, both sliding back. It didn't last, long, though, as each trainer quickly ordered the same attacks once again. Within seconds, each Pokemon was moving forward once again.

And just like that, Lucario and Marowak were engaged in a heated exchange of blows. Lucario swung out with both fists, clashing with Marowak's Bone Rush using Metal Claw, each strike shooting sparks around the two Pokemon. Serena felt the Aura Pokemon was having the time of his life, though. He hadn't just learned from Hawlucha to love the big stage. Not even just from Ash. Serena had given him the love of performing as well, and he was loving the cheers of the crowd as he went head to head with one of Anton's most powerful Pokemon.

"YAHHH! GO LUCARIO!"

"YOU CAN DO IT, MAROWAK!"

The cheers seemed to inspire the Pokemon on further, and each strike appeared to get stronger and stronger. With neither managing to land a direct hit, Serena was wondering just how long the fight could last. Not that the fans would've been bothered if it lasted forever, apparently.

But Ash and Lucario seemed to have the feeling they could get the edge, because suddenly, Lucario managed to swiftly duck to the side, pulling back his arms as Marowak overextended himself in swinging out with Bone Rush. The ground type stumbled forward as he missed, turning back in alarm just a little too late as Ash called his next order.

"Aura Sphere, Lucario!"

"Ruru!"

The months training the Focus Blast that never hit proved useful, as the mighty blue orb of the new move blasted outward. Unlike its weaker predecessor, this attack struck true, exploding against Marowak and sending him crashing to the ground. He somehow managed to rise, but Lucario was already prepared for that, on the move as Ash called one last attack.

"Finish with Quick Attack!"

"Ru!"

Lucario barrelled into Marowak with blistering speed, passing him and appearing almost as though he didn't touch his opponent. However, a moment later, Marowak dropped. This time, he didn't get up, and the call was easy for the referee.

"Marowak is unable to battle! Lucario is the winner! Laverre University will now select their final Pokemon!"

As Anton recalled Marowak, Lucario embraced the cheers of the Lumiose fans. Serena cheered loudest of all, laughing as Lucario bowed and gave a small pose at Hawlucha's seeming encouragement. The Aura Pokemon looked like he was having the time of his life, and Ash seemed even happier with their battling because of it. It made Serena love them both even more somehow. They were an awesome team. And now they were so close to ultimate victory.

As Anton pulled out his final pokeball, and Robby excitedly informed the crowd that it would be his final one, Serena looked to her friends. They were instantly looking much more tense.

"Just one more," Tierno whispered, fists clenched in front of him. "Ash just has to beat that Scizor, and it's over!"

"It's not going to be easy," Shauna murmured, clearly remembering the first matches against Scizor. "It's Anton's strongest Pokemon, and based on today...that's saying something."

"Ash can do it," Dawn said, looking to Serena. "No need to worry."

"He just needs to know we're cheering him on," Serena said, grinning as she looked to the field. "You can do it, Ash!" she yelled.

He glanced back, grinning as he looked to her. He gave a thumbs up, and then turned as Anton called out his final Pokemon.

His pokeball flashed, and Scizor emerged. It looked fresh compared to Lucario, who despite his enthusiasm still holding strong, definitely looked a little winded. Even fresh, he might've been at a disadvantage. Nonetheless, though, he didn't waver as he stared down Anton's strongest Pokemon.

They waited a moment longer, the crowd quieting as the referee looked to both trainers and Pokemon. Then, the signal was given, and the battle resumed.

"Scizor, Bullet Punch!"

"Metal Claw!"

Serena could see instantly that Scizor was much faster, but apparently Lucario knew that as well. Instead of rushing forward like Scizor, Lucario braced himself, both fists glowing as he prepared his Metal Claw. Meanwhile, Scizor came at him at full speed, pincers both glowing white as he readied his Bullet Punch.

When Scizor struck, Lucario brought both arms up, the Bullet Punch meeting the Metal Claw with a metallic clang. Lucario stumbled back from the force, but he seemed okay for the most part. Unfortunately, Anton seemed happy enough that Scizor was now in close.

"Fury Cutter back to back!" he shouted, Scizor pushing forward once more, before pulling back, his pincers now glowing red, before rushing at Lucario again.

"Drain Punch!" Ash commanded quickly.

Scizor was again much faster, his first strike meeting Lucario's Drain Punch, pushing him to the side, before he slashed out with another Fury Cutter. Lucario grunted in surprise at the attack, stumbling to the side. Fortunately, he managed to stay upright, ready for Ash's next command.

"Aura Sphere, now!"

The Aura Pokemon quickly pulled his arms back, the blue sphere forming as Scizor turned to him, eyes wide with surprise at the quick recovery. "Ruru!" Lucario cried out, sending the attack rocketing towards his opponent.

"Block with Fury Cutter!" Anton quickly countered, Scizor moving swiftly on his command, bringing his pincer up as soon as he could.

The Aura Sphere hit, Scizor gliding back a few feet as he was pushed by the blue sphere of energy. He strained against it with everything he had, his pincer glowing bright red against it. Finally, he was able to direct it away, a rock exploding as the attack hit it. Scizor stood a moment later, panting as he looked towards Lucario.

"Quick Attack!" Ash then ordered, voice enthusiastic, Lucario straightening up from his own deep breathing.

"Vacuum Wave!" Anton countered, just as excited about the heated battle.

Lucario rushed towards Scizor with everything he had, while the Pincer Pokemon aimed up his pincers, blue energy beginning to form in front of him. Then, the Vacuum Wave burst forward, right into Lucario as he charged. Serena held her breath, surprised as Lucario battled against the powerful attack. His momentum slowed bit by bit as he strained against it, doing his best to get to Scizor, but he fought on nonetheless.

Finally, just as Lucario was only a few feet away, his charge was reduced to slow steps as he strained against the battering Vacuum Wave. He tried desperately to push forward once more, and then collapsed, the Vacuum Wave propelling him back where he'd come from. He lay still as Scizor released his attack.

As the referee made his call, Ash ran out to check on Lucario. Serena obviously wished Lucario had been able to win, but she was still so happy for him. He seemed just as happy, looking up at Ash with shining eyes despite his loss and his tiredness. He knew he'd done his job, and he'd performed admirably on the big stage.

Now, Greninja would take that stage. And, the final battle of the IPL finals would be between the two Pokemon that had kicked this rivalry off.

"Don't give up, Ash," Serena whispered, clutching her ribbon. "I know you can win this."

Greninja emerged with a flip in midair, landing atop a rock right in front of Ash, folding his arms as he looked out towards Scizor. This was it. Greninja knew it. Twice he'd clashed with this mighty opponent. No victory as of yet. That would change today.

"I guess it's no surprise it comes down to this," Anton said, smiling as he looked out across the field. "Scizor and Greninja...one final match."

"We haven't been able to win yet," Ash answered, eyes locking with Greninja. "We're coming with our very best today."

Anton narrowed his eyes. "Good. So are we."

Both of them took that as a signal to show they wouldn't be starting this match off slowly. Anton quickly grabbed his Key Stone, while Ash and Greninja connected their minds. On the field, Scizor was enveloped in an almost blinding white light. Greninja was surrounded by a massive torrent of water. A moment later, Mega Scizor and Ash-Greninja were facing each other down.

"Oh baby! This is sure to be an incredible battle, folks!" Robby's voice rang out through the now silent arena. The fans were holding their breath in anticipation. "Let's see who can seal the deal and bring their team a championship!"

A moment later, the referee waved his arm. "Let the final battle of the IPL finals begin!"

There was no hesitation from either Ash or Anton. Ash called for Night Slash right away, while Anton ordered a Fury Cutter. In an instant, both Pokemon were bursting forward.

Purple blade met glowing red pincer and Ash felt his platform shake as a crack ripped through the rocks around Greninja and Scizor. Gasps were heard throughout the arena as both Pokemon pulled back and swung forward again, another crack bursting out once more. Ash had to steady himself, and he saw Anton did, too. This was only the beginning.

"Double Team!" Ash then ordered, deciding to move on to a more strategic approach.

Anton seemed ready for it, grinning in response. "Vacuum Wave!"

"Gren!" Greninja cried out, pushing off of Scizor and leaping backwards into the air. A moment later, copies sprang out across the field, surrounding Scizor in all directions.

The Pincer Pokemon didn't appear concerned, holding up his massive pincers as they shook violently. A moment later, blue energy burst outwards, mowing down the Greninja copies in a smooth line.

Smoke burst out across the field as the copies were destroyed. This gave the perfect opening for one of Greninja's favourite quick strikes from behind. "Aerial Ace!" Ash yelled, just as a shape rushed at Scizor out of his view. Two came at him from the sides as well, not every copy wiped out.

"Fury Cutter!" Anton desperately ordered, seeing the danger.

"Zor!" Scizor cried out, spinning in a circle as the three shapes converged on him. All disappeared, and straight above, came the real Greninja.

"Ninjaaa!"

"Zor!"

Scizor was struck right across the head, Grenjnja spinning with a kick to land the blow. The Pincer Pokemon staggered back, crying out in pain and surprise. He and Anton weren't going to let things get away from them, however.

"Bullet Punch, let's go!"

"Night Slash!"

As Greninja landed from his strike, he had to desperately raise up the purple blade, barely blocking the glowing pincer that rushed at him. Purple and silver sparks burst out from the colliding attacks. He and Scizor strained against each other, neither giving an inch. Then, Scizor let up just a little, Greninja thrusting forward, before the other pincer came in from the side.

"Gren!" Greninja cried out, his body rolling away from Scizor. He held his side, grimmacing from the strike.

Ash clenched his fists. Every step of this battle would be a challenge. He had to be quick. "Water Shuriken!"

"Dodge and use Vacuum Wave!" Anton countered.

Robby was trying to comment on the battle, the crowd beginning to murmur excitedly as the pace continued to rise, but he seemed barely able to keep up. He ended up sounding like just another fan, gasping as the shuriken spiraled towards Scizor, before the Pincer Pokemon leaped into the air and unleashed his Vacuum Wave down towards Greninja.

"Night Slash straight up!" Ash commanded, Greninja quickly bending his knees, before leaping up and slashing into the blue energy rushing towards him. He sliced right through it like a hot knife through butter, before slashing upwards into Scizor's jaw.

"Zorrr!" Scizor cried out, body thrown upwards, before he plumetted to the ground.

"A powerful hit for Greninja!" Robby shouted excitedly. "Can he and Ash follow up and take control?!"

Ash smirked. That was certainly the plan. "Now, straight down with Aerial Ace!" he ordered, flexing as Greninja did, before the Ninja Pokemon darted down, limbs glowing white with increased strength.

Scizor recovered quickly, though, and Anton wasn't letting Ash take control that easily. "Dodge with Agility! Then use Bullet Punch!"

"Scizor!" Scizor grunted, watching as Greninja came at him, before darting to the side quickly. As Greninja landed, he lashed out with a kick. Scizor just managed to dodge, ducking to the side, before flipping over as Greninja struck out again. After rolling underneath another kick, he pulled back his pincer, making it glow as its power built up. Then, he slammed it forward, right into Greninja's chest.

Ash gasped, feeling the force himself as Greninja was lifted into the air, flipping over and barely landing on his feet. He touched his chest briefly, breathing hard, but looked ready for his next order. Ash gave it.

"Double Team, and then Night Slash!"

"Gren!"

He split off into dozens of copies once more, but this time Greninja immediately went on the offensive. Within moments, Scizor was surrounded, dozens of Greninja copies rushing towards him with ominous purple blades raised to strike.

"I don't think so, Ash," Anton said, smiling as he studied the attacking Ninja Pokemon. He was clearly enjoying the battle. As hectic as it may have seemed, it was a kind of peace for him. Ash understood it. He felt similarly as he grew more and more connected to Greninja, feeling the rush of air on his skin as he ran. "Scizor, use Agility and Bullet Punch once more!"

Then, suddenly, Scizor was darting in and out amongst the attacking Greninja copies, striking down each one he met with a powerful glowing pincer. Eventually, he reached one right in the centre, punching at it almost casually. That was his mistake.

"Gren!" The real Greninja blocked the attack with Night Slash, spinning as he forced Scizor down, using the Pincer Pokemon's momentum against him. Then, he slashed out once more, slicing across Scizor's side with Night Slash.

"Zor!"

As Scizor stumbled, Ash quickly decided to keep him on his toes again. "Double Team again, Greninja!"

As Greninja began to multiply once more, Anton narrowed his eyes, watching Scizor be surrounded again. "Always keeping your opponent guessing, huh Ash?"

Ash laughed. "Can't have you planning ahead for everything."

"I guess not." Anton smirked, watching Greninja darting around, his copies zigzagging over the rocks. It would've had almost anyone else's head spinning. Not Anton. "Vacuum Wave on the ground!"

Scizor reacted immediately, aiming his pincers out at each side. They shook violently, before suddenly firing out the powerful blue wave of energy. The ground was ripped up as the attack hit, shaking the earth. Rocks sprayed everywhere, Scizor turning in a circle to unleash the barrage at all the Greninja copies. There was no way for Greninja to hide himself in that.

"Ninjaaa!" he cried out, Ash wincing and clutching his stomach as a large rock was propelled towards the real Ninja Pokemon among the copies. He hit the ground hard, just as the copies vanished around him, and Scizor halted his attack.

"Not bad," Ash muttered, grimmacing. He looked to Greninja, feeling his determination as he got to his feet. He was panting, and so was Scizor. The next few moves would decide this. They needed to fight their way if they were going to win. "All right Greninja, get in there with Aerial Ace!"

"Gren!"

"Counter with Bullet Punch!"

"Zor!"

With renewed energy, both Pokemon took off towards each other, rocks thrown up around them from the cracked earth. The crowd cheered loudly in anticipation, excited for conclusion they sensed was nearing. Nobody could know who would win. It was too close.

Greninja and Scizor met with a mighty exchange of blows. Ash felt his own body thud with the power of Scizor's attacks as Greninja and the Pincer Pokemon struck at one another. As Greninja struck out with a fist, Scizor responded by swiping down with a pincer. Then, Greninja spun and lashed out with a kick, barely blocked as Scizor leaped up and swung down with his other arm. They continued like this for a few more exchanges, each managing to land a single blow before shoving each other back with one last exchange.

"These two just won't give up!" Robby shouted excitedly. "Just who will manage to emerge victorious in this clash of titans?!"

As the cheers grew louder, Ash felt his heart beating faster. He felt so connected with Greninja as he embraced the determination to win and the strength in his limbs, along with the aches and exhaustion. They were one and they were fighting as such.

But Anton and Scizor were similar. They knew each other well and responded to one another in such a way that each move was built off another. Anton had fought well with Scizor before, but this was another level. They were connected in the peace they felt about who they were and where they were going.

It was the kind of battle Ash dreamed of.

He smiled, raising his arm as Greninja did, a purple blade coming to the Ninja Pokemon's hand. "Let's give it everything we've got, Greninja! Night Slash!"

Anton smiled back, appearing to have his own understanding of just how special this battle was. "You too, Scizor! Fury Cutter!"

Greninja and Scizor kicked off with everything they had, attacks ready to bring forth with all their power. As they reached each other, both swung out. Greninja's blade slashed down across Scizor's shoulder, while Scizor's pincer slashed up along Greninja's hip.

Ash, gritting his teeth through the pain, called his next order quickly. "Water Shuriken!"

"Vacuum Wave!" Anton countered, eyes narrowed with razor sharp focus.

As both Pokemon reeled from their simultaneous hits, they somehow fired their attacks. Greninja grabbed the shuriken from his back, flinging it around with all he and Ash had. Scizor aimed his massive pincers up and unleashed the blue energy of Vacuum Wave.

The attacks exploded against each other, the shock wave sending both Pokemon flying back across the field, landing hard in front of their trainers. Wind and water buffetted each of them, the remains of their attacks spraying outwards. The crowd was going wild at the force of the attacks. This was a fitting matchup to end a Championship battle.

Now it would end, and Ash knew Anton felt it, too. Even the crowd seemed to be sensing it, their cheers dying down as both Greninja and Scizor got to their feet. Ash felt Pikachu take ahold of his pant leg, his partner Pokemon sensing the tension as well. He and Anton looked across at one another and grinned. It was a silent vow to put everything into this one last clash.

"Double Team with all our power, Greninja!" Ash yelled, spreading his arms in sync with the Ninja Pokemon.

"Agility, Scizor! This is it!" Anton shouted in response.

"Gren!"

"Zor!"

At one end of the field, dozens and dozens of copies burst out around Greninja. They seemed to fill Ash's vision, but part of him also saw through Greninja. He knew exactly where the real one was. He could feel the connection to each copy. He could feel the power of the shuriken on his back, now re-formed.

At the other end of the field, Scizor darted around like a red bullet. He almost seemed like a red blur, streaking across the rocks and through the air. Ash could sense the speed and power building in him. He was ready to unleash his final attack. Both he and Anton were. Ash and Greninja were ready, too.

"WATER SHURIKEN!"

"VACUUM WAVE!"

Copies began to disappear around Greninja as he raised his arm up, pulling the shuriken from his back. Ash, his own arm up as well, felt it as each added its power. The shuriken grew and grew with each one, spinning, glowing and pulsing with more and more strength. It was nothing like the failed attempts they'd had before. It was...alive. Alive with the understanding Ash had about the power of his bond with Greninja. With Pikachu. With Lucario. With all of his Pokemon and all of his friends. That power was truly all of their power. Together they would unleash it.

Ash could see the incredible vortex of blue energy swirling up in front of him and Greninja. Scizor and Anton had formed something great with their own bond as well. It pulsed with a fierce energy that would've struck fear into many.

Not Ash and Greninja.

Together, Pokemon and trainer swung their arms forward, unleashing their Z-Move, powered by their unique bond. "Z-BOND SHURIKEN!" Ash yelled, voice ringing out alonside Greninja's own cry.

The attacks exploded against each other with a sound like a mountain crashing into a volcano. Bright white light filled the stadium. Wind swirled in all directions and heat pulsed from the centre of the battlefield. If the crowd made any noise, Ash didn't hear it. He could only feel Pikachu next to him and Greninja ahead of him.

Finally, with one last gust of wind that blew Ash's hat off, the storm from the colliding attacks began to die down. The light dimmed. Ash knew Greninja was okay for now, but he was exhausted. He'd felt the energy from Vacuum Wave battering him. His shuriken's effect was still unknown.

Then, the scene on the battlefield was visible in front of him. The rocks were blackened, and craters littered the field. Greninja stood unsteadily in front of Ash, while a dazed Scizor stood in front of Anton. If either could attack now, they would win. Ash felt it in Greninja and saw it in Scizor.

Neither had the energy, though. The crowd watched silently, anxiously waiting to see which scarred and battered Pokemon would remain standing. The referee stared uncertainly between the two. Ash and Anton simply remained tense, waiting.

Finally, both Pokemon stumbled. One fell further than the other, while one managed to keep himself up a bit on his knee. The one that stumbled further struggled to rise, face in the dirt. It couldn't do it. It fell still, body reverting to its original form.

The referee hovered forward on his Aegislash and raised his arm towards the winning side.

"Scizor is unable to battle! Greninja is the winner! All six Pokemon for Laverre University are unable to battle! Lumiose University are the winners!"

"And that is it, folks!" Robby's voice then rang out. "Scizor is down! After a fierce final clash, Greninja and Ash emerge victorious! Let's hear it for the IPL Battle Conference Champions! The Lumiose Luxrays!"

As Greninja's form faded, Ash found himself in a daze, barely hearing the cheers. They'd won? They'd won! After all this time, he and Greninja had finally mastered the move that had failed them in this very arena nearly a year before. They'd finally overcome the barrier that was Anton and Scizor.

"Pikapi..."

Ash glanced down, seeing Pikachu smiling back at him. "We did it, buddy."

"Pika!"

Ash then turned back to the field. He saw Greninja, still kneeling, looking too tired to stand. Ash quickly hopped down onto the field, Pikachu following, and rushed over to his Ninja Pokemon. As he knelt by Greninja's side, Ash saw the happiness in his fierce fighter's eyes.

"Great job, Greninja," Ash said, giving Greninja a fist bump. "You were great out there."

"Gren!" Greninja sighed in contentment, before turning his head. Ash followed his gaze, seeing Anton and Scizor together in much the same position. He helped Greninja to his feet and headed over. When they reached their opponents, Anton looked up, smiling.

"Great battle, Ash!" he said, holding out a hand and standing, holding Scizor up as he did so. He looked to Greninja and Pikachu, and then towards where the rest of the Lumiose team stood, waiting now at the trainer platform. "From all of you."

Ash grinned, shaking Anton's hand as Pikachu and Greninja exchanged courtesies with Scizor. "You too. It was one of the toughest we've ever had. I can't wait for the next one!"

Anton laughed at that, nodding a moment later. "Yeah...we'll need to find a time for it." He looked at Ash a little more seriously then, taking a deep breath. "So did I pass?"

"Pass?" Ash asked, confused.

Anton nodded. "You wanted to make sure I was strong enough." He cracked a smile. "For a gym quest."

Ash chuckled at that, looking to Pikachu and Greninja before returning his gaze to Anton. "Yeah...I think you did."

"Well, then I guess this wasn't a total loss after all." Anton paused, looking around at the arena, fans still cheering as Robby commented on the highlights of the battle. "Next time I'm here, it'll be for the Kalos League."

And with that, he turned, giving Ash one more wave, before heading back to his team.

Ash watched him a moment, before smiling to himself and looking to his Pokemon. "Let's go celebrate!"

When they turned, Ash saw his teammates waiting for him. They looked tired, but their eyes were bright. Clemont had collected Ash's hat, which looked pretty dusty after being thrown off in the battle. Ash supposed he didn't look much better, glancing down at his uniform. Even Clemont and Trevor had some dust on them.

But they hadn't come here hoping to keep dirt of their clothes. They'd come here to win, and win as a team. As Ash looked to his two Battle Team teammates, he couldn't have been more proud. Trevor had proven to be as key a member of their team as anyone. Clemont had proven to be as clever in battle as he was in the lab. Together, the three of them had overcome a lot, and now they joined the rest of their friends in victory.

Lumiose University were the IPL Champions.
