A/N: Thanks to everyone who left reviews on the previous chapter, it really means the world to me. I'm sorry I haven't been consistent in updating this story but 2020 has been a bitch, and that's not only because of COVID. I thought it was fitting to finish the year by posting a chapter for this story. I hope you guys like it and I wish you a happy new Year 2021.
Matt hung up the phone and tried to stay calm. "Everything is going to be okay, the two of you are going to be okay." Matt helped her walk inside the cabin to get cleaned up and changed. They were too far from the city and Matt didn't know what the closest hospital was, and he didn't want to call Christie until he knew more.
"I knew that he could get here earlier but it's eight weeks Matt." She took deep breaths, the memory of labour not too far away.
"He's in a hurry to meet his brothers and sisters." He kissed her forehead with a smile just as the paramedics came inside the cabin.
"Ma'am, how far along are you?" The woman asked as Matt and the second paramedic helped her on the gurney.
"Thirty-two weeks; and call me Gabby."
"First pregnancy?"
"Third." Matt answered as he watched her face contort in pain as a contraction.
"Alright, let's get mommy and baby to the hospital." She smiled and Gabby was loaded into the ambulance, Matt riding with them.
"We're finally going to meet him." He smiled, his excitement finally kicking up a notch.
"Yeah." She breathed through another contraction. They were far from being regular so she suspected it would take some time for the baby to come, no matter how previous pregnancies she had. The drive to the hospital was about twenty minutes long and looking around, Matt couldn't recognise the small building. He followed next to the gurney, holding Gabby's hand the whole time until she was admitted and checked over.
"Hi, I'm Matt Casey, my wife was just admitted for premature labour. I was wondering if you could tell me the name of the hospital?"
"It's Oakland medical center." She smiled at him.
"Thank you." He smiled back at her and returned to Gabby. "Hey baby, how're you feeling?"
"It's not that bad for now, maybe 7 minutes apart I'd say."
"Okay, that gives us a little bit of time."
"Did you call Kelly and Christie?"
"Not yet. Are you okay if I call them and tell them what's going on?"
"Yeah, you can go, I'll be okay." She smiled. He moved a strand of hair out of her eyes and kissed her forehead.
"I'll be right back." He promised, waking out of the dialing Kelly and waiting for him to answer.
Kelly was driving back home with Violet riding shotgun and the rest of the kids in the back from school. Matt and Gabby were gone two days now and so far, things were going well enough even though there was some bickering from both sets of twins that he had to break.
"Come on guys, inside." He called after them after he parked in the driveway. They all bounced out noisily, Violet in the lead. He was making the walk-up when his phone started ringing. He was surprised to see Matt's name flash on the screen. "Hey, is everything okay Matt?" He stopped in his tracks. We have a slight situation on our hands, Gabby went into early labour. "Shit, is she okay? Do you need us to get you anything?" We're in a small medical clinic close to the cabin, Oakland Medical Center. I'm going to try to get what we need close by since we don't have the baby bag. "Okay and do you want us to tell the kids anything?" Kelly saw Violet come out of the house when she realized he wasn't following them, and he pressed his finger to his lips to keep her quiet while he talked to Matt. Just tell them that we love them and that we'll call as soon as the baby comes. "Alright, I'll also call everyone to give them a head's up, so you don't have to worry about anything, keep us posted on the new Casey." Violet was now jumping up and down out of excitement, a huge grin on her face. "Violet sends her love." He chuckled. Tell her she'll get the first pictures. Thanks again Severide. Matt chuckled on the other side of the line before Kelly hung up. "Come on Vi, let's go in before the gang breaks everything.
"Are uncle Matt, Aunt Gabby and the baby going to be okay?"
"I'm sure they will be, they seem to be in good hands at the clinic. I'll give your mom a call to tell her the good news."
"She's going to flip out of her mind."
"She has been waiting for this from the second Matt said Gabby was pregnant." He laughed. They walked inside to take care of the kids, Violet slipping away to call her mother.
Matt walked back inside to find the doctor with Gabby, examining her. "Hey." He poked his head in the room.
"Are you daddy?" The woman in her mid-forties asked.
"Yes, that's me." He took a seat next to Kim's bed, linking her fingers through his. "Is everything okay?"
"Things are looking good." She smiled. "I looked at your wife's files and I'm up to speed on all of her history and as I was telling her, the contractions are not consistent, but she is already dilated at 7 so it shouldn't be long before it's time to push."
"She's early though, is that dangerous for either her or the baby?"
"Considering it's her third pregnancy, it's not uncommon for a baby to come earlier and for the delivery to be quick."
"Okay, that's good."
"Try to rest a little bit, I'll be back in about thirty minutes to check up on you."
"Thank you." The doctor smiled at him and left the couple alone for a little bit.
As promised, the doctor was back thirty minutes later and considering Gabby was fully dilated, there was no time for any pain management meds and Gabby gritted her teeth, taking the pain like the strong woman that she was. For forty minutes she pushed but as soon as the head was out, it merely took seconds for baby Casey's lungs to start working at full capacity.
"Congratulations mom and dad, it's a boy." Matt was given the opportunity to cut the umbilical cord and the baby was quickly checked out, cleaned and returned to its parents. Gabby's forehead was pearling with sweat, but Matt was lovingly wiping her brow as he watched her nurse their son for the first time.
"You were amazing baby." He whispered as his lips found her forehead.
"It's the first time I did this naturally."
"That's what makes you even more badass." She chuckled at his excitement.
"Alright smooth talker, how about we make a facetime with the kids, they'll want to see their new baby brother."
"Wait, I have to send Violet the first picture, I promised I would." Gabby positioned the baby properly in her arms and smiled lovingly down at him as Matt took the picture unexpectedly. He sent it with the caption meet your new cousin. She replied with heart eye emoji's and Matt chuckled, knowing his niece was probably crying on her side of the state. Matt positioned himself so everyone could see just him, and he called Kelly. It took a few rings before he picked up and Matt could hear the ruckus as the kids were called to the living room. Christie was practically crying with a smile on her face. "We have a little surprise for you guys." He smiled and swiveled his phone so everyone could see Gabby and the baby.
"We want you to meet your baby brother, Aiden Antonio." Gabby smiled back at them, having missed her brood even though it had only been a couple of days. All the kids spoke at the same time and Kelly had to remind them that the Aiden and Gabby were tired after working so hard and that hearing their screams would do nothing to help. After a few minutes, the kids were sent back downstairs to play and Violet told them she loved them and couldn't wait to hold her new cousin when they got back, promising to help them if they needed some time off to relax in the following weeks. She left Kelly and Christie for last and although it wasn't the best way to get it done, the circumstances made it so.
"Thanks for looking after the kids." Matt smiled appreciatively.
"It's our pleasure, they've been behaving." Christie promised.
"I know this isn't the best way to do this." Matt looked at Gabby who smiled and nodded. "But we would love if you would agree to be Aiden's Godmother." Matt had tears in his eyes and so did Christie, the same Casey smile on their face.
"I'd be honoured little brother." She wiped her tears with the pad of her thumbs, Kelly pulling her into his side a little bit more. "The house will be ready for when you guys make it back." She promised.
"Thanks Chris, we really didn't expect this little guy to get here so soon."
"Life has a nice way of giving us what we wish for."
"We'll let you guys get some rest, you'll need it." Kelly smiled.
"We'll call you when we leave this place." Matt promised before hanging up.
"I can't believe he's finally here." She gushed.
"Our family is finally complete." Matt kissed her lips gently.
"And filled with so much love."
"Come on, let me get this little man, mommy looks tired." Matt scooped Aiden gently in his arms
"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't." She admitted.
"Rest, we'll be right here." Matt settled in the rocking chair and Gabby's eyes closed in a second, the adrenaline wearing down and the fatigue kicking in.
Matt held Aiden arms as Gabby slumbered next to them. He couldn't believe that he had a son of his own and that his beautiful wife knew all along.
"Your mom did so great buddy, she deserves to sleep for a little bit so it's just you and me, man to man." He ran a thumb against his forehead, smiling with pride. "Being a daddy was the best gift I was given in this life. Your big sisters taught me how to be a good daddy, how to love like I never loved in the past. The hardest part was opening my heart to someone new. Grace and Emma are the reason I didn't give my heart, because I didn't want to break theirs like mine was but when I met your mommy, it changed my whole world. She has the biggest heart in the whole world, and she gave me another gift that I wasn't expecting, a new family. She gave me two more sons and a daughter that is just as beautiful and kind as she is. You are the cherry on top. I didn't know I wanted you so much until your mommy told me you were growing inside of her. A part of me and a part of her and now that you're here, my heart is full. I love you so much son."
"I think he loves you too." Matt smiled when he heard Gabby's groggy voice.
"Hey, how are you feeling?"
"I'm a little bit sore seeing you like this with your son, fills my heart to the brim." She smiled back at him.
"I have all of that because of you, so thank you." He stood from the rocking chair and placed Aiden in her arms, sitting next to her on the bed.
"Did the doctor come while I was sleeping?" She settled Aiden to nurse him now that he was fussing.
"She did. She said that we should be able to go home tomorrow evening."
"Do we have everything to go back home?"
"Not everything but we will figure something out."
"What are we missing?" She readjusted her gown and settled a sleepy Aiden in her arms.
"The car seat." He said sheepishly.
"Did someone call for a car seat?" Both Matt and Gabby were surprised to find Antonio and Laura poking their heads through the door.
"Tonio, what are you doing here?"
"Well, when Kelly called me to say that baby Casey was coming, I figured you would need a few things considering you're eight weeks early."
"Thanks Antonio." Matt shook his hand and was pulled into a hug by his brother-in-law.
"Do I have a niece or a nephew?" Laura was by his side, an arm wrapped around his waist.
"I would like you to meet Aiden Antonio Casey." Gabby smiled as tears filled Antonio's eyes.
"I'm honoured."
"We couldn't think of a more fitting name considering his uncle and godfather played such a role in getting us here." Matt rested Aiden in Antonio's arms.
"One of the best decisions of my life." Laura dotted on him as Antonio talked to him and Gabby leaned against Matt's shoulder.
Antonio and Laura stayed a little longer before promising to take care of picking up their things at the cabin and bringing the rest of the things back home so it would be ready for their arrival. Gabby stayed at the medical center another couple of days considering Aiden was early, but she was glad when they made the drive back home. Matt was looking at her through the rear-view mirror, a permanent smile on his lips. Matt helped her up the stairs and into a quiet house so they could settle in before the kids came back later in the afternoon. The nursery was filled with cards and balloons since their families hadn't been able to visit them in the little medical center.
"We have the best family." Gabby was rocking Aiden back to sleep after nursing him while Matt read every single card to her.
"Best in the world." He echoed. They enjoyed the quiet together until their brood returned and although a little bit loud, they all got to hold their baby brother, who didn't seem to mind the attention at all and they finally became a family of eight, this wonderful new chapter beginning.
