Day 6 prompt. Here we go. This takes place about 3 years after the wedding and has ties to Saving Sonic, one of my currently ongoing stories. It's similar to the "Embrace" story. Enjoy.

Shadow woke up to screaming followed by a small thud. Bolting up in bed, he looked to his husband's side of the bed only to find it empty.

"N-NO! No, please! Let me go! I don't want this! I don't want this!"

Disentangling himself from the sheets, Shadow walked around the bed to find Sonic thrashing around on the floor, arms and legs flailing about inside the blanket he was still wrapped in. "Stop it… Stop…" Sonic wept, tears leaking out from underneath his closed eyelids.

Shadow was thankful that Faith was sleeping over at a friend's house tonight. With great care, he gathered his shaking husband and bundled him up in the blanket like a hedgehog burrito. "Shhh… it's okay… It's just a dream… It's just a dream, love. Wake up. I'm here…" he murmured, rocking Sonic in his arms.

With a choked gasp, Sonic's eyes flew open. The blue hedgehog whimpered, his ears pinned flat against his head, while Shadow cradled his face in his hands.

"There you are. It's okay. It was just a nightmare, Sonic…" the black hedgehog whispered, his thumbs brushing away the tears on his husband's cheeks.

"D-Death Egg… Infinite…" Sonic mumbled, burying his face in Shadow's chest fluff. "He was… I-I couldn't fight back…" His voice cracked as he sobbed into the white softness.

"Shhh… It's alright now. He's gone. He'll never hurt you again," Shadow reassured him, combing his fingers through azure quills. After about ten minutes of cuddling, running his hands through unkempt quills, and whispered reassurances, Shadow felt the tension leave Sonic's body as the blue hedgehog began to fall asleep.

Carefully, Shadow tucked his husband back into bed then slipped in beside him. Wrapping his arms around his beloved, Shadow gently kissed Sonic's forehead and whispered a promise into his ear.

"Don't worry. I'll always be here to protect you."
