Following Harry's failed attempt to take Voldemort's life, a ferocious duel ensues between Snape and himself ― a duel in which Snape is forced to conclude that his son's powers have grown since last they faced.
Harry kicks his father and the Death Eater falls down the steps. The Auror glances down at Snape, shock evident in his face.
Harry. [aside] It's in his hands now. I can take Snape. Take his blade, take his life. Take his place at the Dark Lord's side. Yes, even that. I don't bury the thought, this time. I glory in it. I engorge myself with its juices, feel its power tingle my cheeks. It makes me feverish, this thought, with lust so overpowering as to totally obliterate all other considerations. I have the power. The choice is mine. And now another thought emerges, slowly compulsive as an ardent lover ― I can destroy the Dark Lord, too. Destroy them both, and rule the galaxy. Avenge and conquer.
Voldemort, who detects the dark vengeful emotions pulsing through Harry, is quick to goad the young Auror, much as he had during James Potter's duel against Lord Arcturus.
Voldemort. [laughs] Good. Use your aggressive feelings, boy. Let the hate flow through you. Become one with it, let it nourish you.
Likewise, Snape's sense of betrayal upon hearing Voldemort's advice is nearly equal to that of Yaxley's as it comes to occur to him that Harry might win this fight . . . and that might be exactly what Voldemort wants.
Resentment rises within Snape's heart as the Death Eater gets to his feet and faces his son once more.
His momentary thoughts of vengeance beginning to fade, Harry pauses with indecision. He lowers his blade and deactivates the lightwand.
Snape. Sirius has taught you well.
Harry. I will not fight you, Father.
Snape walks up the steps toward Harry.
Snape. You are unwise to lower your defenses.
Snape lunges at Harry. His red blade is met by Harry's green one.
Their duel continues.
Harry deactivates his lightwand and flips onto the balcony.
Harry. Your thoughts betray you, Father. I feel the good in you, the conflict.
Snape. There is no conflict.
Harry. You couldn't bring yourself to kill me before. And I don't believe you'll destroy me now.
Snape. You underestimate the power the dark side. If you will not fight, then you will meet your destiny.
Snape tosses his still activated blade at the balcony. It, along with Harry, crash to the ground.
Voldemort. [laughs] Good. Good.
Snape activates his lightwand and heads off to search for Harry.
Exit all.
