Chapter 35
"Thank you, Kim Kardashian." She made a face at Fin's words, slowing down on her approach.
"These influencers are the voice of Gen Z."
"And they gettin' rich doin' it."
"Don't they know porn is free these days," was the sentence Annabelle used to announce her return to the precinct on November 16, 2017.
"Welcome back," Fin stood giving her a hug, followed by Carisi. Olivia stayed where shew as already having had lunch together earlier that week, and Amanda simply shot her a small smile.
Back to the case, Sonny kept flipping through the Instagram posts, "that's Blue Glacier shampoo. My sister uses that."
"Okay. Is there a photo from last night?"
"Just one posted at 9:15pm. There's no geo tag. No metadata."
"Looks like Tribeca," Amanda spoke up.
"That's where the uni picked her up."
Pulling out a notebook, Annabelle started jotting things down to get caught up as Olivia spoke, "alright. Anything with a face attached?"
"Nope. Not yet, but I still got 10,000 pics to go through."
"Okay. So, what happened between the time she disclosed and the time she denied?"
"She was texting the whole time we were there."
Annabelle spoke up, "could mean she was being pressured?"
Olivia nodded, standing up, "Anna, keep Carisi company with the pictures. Rollins, let's go."
Annabelle nodded at her boss' instructions, before confusion covered her face at the smug look the blonde gave her. Olivia and Amanda had been gone about an hour when Fin's phone rang, within a couple of minutes he hung up and was leaving his chair, "gotta go talk to a lawyer. Who's coming?"
Carisi was quick to stand, "I can't look at this anymore."
Fin nodded, looking at Annabelle, "then you get to look into the monster."
"The who?"
"MMA fighter."
She smirked, "bring me back Starbucks."
-xXx-
Annabelle was gaping at the instagramed abs on Andy McFearson's body, when Olivia's voice broke through her thoughts, "Anna, head over to Gym Insanity. 23 Wooster Street. You're meeting Fin and Carisi." With a nod and a smile, she shut her laptop and grabbed her phone and wallet before leaving the building.
It was twenty minutes later that she saw the two men waiting for her in front of a set of glass doors, "so what are we doing exactly?"
"The Monster wants to talk."
At Carisi's words, she glanced inside the building, unable to see anything due to the tint, "while he works out?"
As the trio walked towards a ring where two men were sparring, Fin spoke, "tattoos at twelve o clock."
Annabelle smirked, "sorry, I'm distracted by the abs." she squeaked when the shirtless man knocked his opponent down with a kick to the head.
"And guess why they call him the monster."
"Yo, you guys NYPD?" Her eyes reluctantly left the fighting to focus on the man walking up.
"Yes, sir. Mr. McFearson said he wanted to talk to us."
"Yeah. Yeah, yeah. I'm Stan Thompkins. His lawyer slash manager. Look, he's got a twenty-million-dollar fight on the line and this wack a doodle chickens got him spun."
"We'd like to hear that from him."
"Hey, yo, Andy," Sean turned to the ring at Carisi's words.
The Monster knocked the opponent down with a hard left, "take ten," before coming out of the ring.
"What we talked about?"
"Yeah, so, we had a date last night, me and Katy."
"The internet whore," Sean cut in.
"Hey, stop!"
The pair looked at each other at Andy's words before Sean continued, "what? She's famous for taking off her clothes."
"You have sex?" Fin's question knocked Annabelle from her stupor of following a bead of sweat go down his chest.
"yeah, sure. And it was rough, but it was consensual. Then she sends me this an hour ago."
"That's why we called you," Sean spoke raising the cell phone up.
"Pay me ten thousand dollars or I'll tell the cops you raped me, "Annabelle made eye contact with Andy as soon as she read the message out loud. Well, crap.
As the group decided to head to the precinct, Annabelle got orders from everyone's coffee and split off, getting back in time to hear Amanda say, "Katy's already lied to us. Twice."
"There's a reason why they call this guy a monster," he took the coffee with a smile, "thanks."
-xXx-
On the nineteenth, she was sitting on a park bench as she sipped from a Starbucks cup as the unit staked out Stuyvesant Park, the money from Andy inside a bag ten feet away from her as they waited to see if Katy showed up. "No sign," she muttered from around the hole in the lid of her coffee cup. A few minutes later the girl herself showed up. "Damn."
She was sitting inside the interrogation room with Katy as Olivia walked in, "demanding money in exchange for not reporting a crime. That's a crime, Katy. It's called extortion."
"I didn't do that. I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Why were you at the park," Annabelle asked, leaning back in her chair.
"I had an interview for a modeling gig. A rep from Chanel asked me to meet her there."
"At the park? At 1pm on a Sunday?"
She pulled up her messages, "you don't believe me. Look."
Annabelle took the phone, "Hey, Katy. Love your insta. Chanel is developing a new ad campaign you'd be perfect for."
"See? I didn't ask anyone from money."
"Katy. We saw the texts that you sent to the monster."
"Then he's setting me up. He told me that he'd come after me, if I went to the police."
"Show me right now," Olivia's voice took on a different tone quickly. Annabelle gave the phone back to Katy, who gave it to Olivia after a couple of seconds.
"Katy, did he rape you?" The girl nodded her head quickly, eyes slamming shut as they filled with tears.
Annabelle left the room while Olivia told Katy to stay there and that they would be back soon, which turned into an hour before the girl was allowed to leave the precinct.
"Okay, we talked to Chanel. They've never heard of Katy." Fin and Amanda sat at one end of the oval table, the blonde's laptop in front of her. Carisi stood, looking at the full screen on the wall that displayed the texts. Rollins clicked at her computer, "she's got texts from this guy. Phillip Ash telling her not to talk to us."
"And, unless he was stupid enough to lie to our face, are also fake." Annabelle smirked at Fin's words.
"Katy just take council from some attorney she's never heard of who just randomly pops up on her phones," Carisi pulled out a chair to sit next to the returning detective.
"After you've been raped, how clearly are you thinking?"
Annabelle chimed in, "the texts from her phone makes her sounds like a little bo peep."
"and his make him the muffin man," Amanda cut her off.
"But the texts on his phone show she's the devil."
"And vice versa."
"Okay, so if they're both telling the truth, there's gotta be a third party," Liv ran her hand through her bangs.
"Actually, it was a double catfish. Whoever posed as Katy to message the monster, posed as the monster to message Katy," Fin spoke waving the pen poised between his fingers through the air.
"And as the lawyer? And Chanel?"
Olivia closed her file at Annabelle's words, "so have computer crimes check the IP address."
-xXx-
"Isn't that your fifth cup?"
Rafael turned around, briefcase almost swinging into his wife's hip, "third, thank you." He looked at the man who owned the cart, "can you add a white chocolate mocha, too? Thanks." Once their drinks were made, the couple began walking.
"so, the person at the other end of that IP address played both of them. And you want me to charge that person with what? Last I heard, lying on the internet will put you in office it won't put you behind bars."
"Criminal impersonation?"
"Second degree," he spoke around a mouthful of liquid, "wanna get worked up over a misdemeanor?"
"I'm getting worked up over rape!"
He stopped, pointing at her with the hand wrapped around his cup, "no, no. The monster didn't intend to rape anyone. In order for that person to be charged as an accomplice, the monster has to be found guilty. I'd hate to be the smuck that presented those facts to a jury."
"And if it doesn't go to the jury?"
"Why would a guy who gets punched with bare knuckles for a living take a plea deal?"
"Hit him harder? Babe, I don't know. You're the smart one in this marriage."
He smirked, "how else was I meant to land someone as beautiful as you."
She rolled her eyes, "shut up," planting a small kiss to his check, close to his plump lips, she ran a finger down his red tie, "I'm making you tell Liv."
-xXx-
Annabelle sat outside of the DA's office with Katy as Olivia and Rafael spoke with Andy and his lawyer. "Does it get better?"
Her voice was so quiet that Annabelle almost missed the question. The detective hesitated before answering, "yes. Sometimes it doesn't feel that way, but it does. You will find love, and you won't always be thinking of his hands. They go away as you heal."
Katy opened her mouth to speak, but stopped as the door opened, the pair walked into the room, Annabelle giving her a supportive smile. The MMA fighter stood as they entered, "Hey," his words were soft, "they told me everything, Katy, I really that that you wanted…"
"I told you to stop."
"I…didn't think you meant it."
"You choked me, Andy."
"I didn't know."
"I was a virgin."
Andy looked shocked, and Annabelle tuned Olivia out as she began to speak, instead choosing to comfort the stricken influence. She noticed when the monster took a step closer to Katy, causing her to put her hand on the girl's arm, as Olivia and Rafael both took a step closer, "Katy, I am so sorry."
"Sorry – no deal or sorry I hurt you," blue eyes flickered to her husband at the sound of his voice.
She felt Rafael's hand accidently graze hers as he stood next to her to face the monster. "I didn't want to hurt you."
"I don't wanna hurt anymore."
Andy looked at his manager, who was shaking his head before looking at Katy and nodding, "I'll take the deal. You can go after whoever did this now?"
Olivia gave a single nod, "you can count on it."
-xXx-
"Get two first class tickets to West Virginia."
Annabelle made a face full of doubt at Olivia's words, which Carisi obviously agreed with, "really?"
"No. Fill up your gas tank. Fin, you riding shot gun?"
"No. I'm allergic to West Virginia."
"Rollins, you're up."
The blonde made a face, "you're kidding."
Olivia looked between the pair, "look, somebody's gotta translate for this guy," as she handed Carisi the file.
Annabelle sighed, "I'll go."
"You sure?"
She let out a puff of air as she looked at Sonny, "yeah…it'll be…fun."
The pair went to their respective houses to pack a bag for a couple of days, before meeting back up at the airport, the tickets safely stored on their phones. "Yeah, it shouldn't be a super long time," she held up a finger when Carisi approached her as she was on the phone before she gave a small laugh, "I'm always careful. I'll see you in a couple of days at the most. Love you, too." She hung up, pocketing her phone, "sorry, had to fill Raf in."
A couple of hours later, they were walking up the path to the front door of a small house, talking to the sheriff of Maysville, West Virginia. "Now are you doing the actual arrest or am I? I've never done this jurisdictional stuff before."
Annabelle fell slightly behind the two men as her eyes roamed over their surroundings. "Technically you'll do the arrest and maintain custody until the extradition then we'll take over."
"Got it."
As they walked onto the porch of the white house, Annabelle heard noises, "tv's on." She knocked, letting the guys hang behind now, "it's the police. We just wanna talk."
Carisi walked in first, "excuse me, ma'am. I'm detective Carisi. This is detective Barba from the NYPD."
"NYPD?"
"New York Police Department. We've got a warrant to search these premises. What's your name, ma'am?"
"Judy Parcell."
"Mrs. Parcell, do you own a computer?"
"Computer? If I get the clicker to work, it's a good day."
"anyone else live here," Carisi spoke up.
"My husband used to til he died. So, my daughter takes care of me."
"Is she here now?"
"What day is it?"
"Monday."
"Heather!"
"Momma, what's going on?"
The sheriff seemed to tense when the newest member joined their group. "Where do you keep your computer, Heather?" Annabelle spoke ignoring the men.
"You're the police?"
"You know why we're here," Carisi asked.
"Yeah, because I'm stupid."
She went to shake Annabelle's hand, who quickly crossed her arms over her chest, "computer."
"It's uh, under my bed, in my room."
Carisi headed that way immediately as Judy spoke, "You take her, who's gonna change my bag?"
"Mom's got cancer. She can't use the toilet."
Annabelle looked at the sheriff, "You have somebody for that?"
The sheriff nodded as Carisi walked in carrying a thick silver laptop, "we have a winner."
"Heather," the sheriff spoke as he put a hand on her shoulder, "you're under arrest, okay? And we're gonna be confiscating the computer, too."
That night, they went to The Barrel in Maysville. It was after one beer that she excused herself from Sonny and sheriff- call me Chuck. "Sorry fellows, I gotta tell my girl goodnight."
"Your…girl?"
"Tell her I love her."
She rolled her eyes with a grin at Carisi's demand, "that'll make Raf happy," Annabelle looked at Chuck, "my daughter." Stopping off at the restroom before leaving, she made a face as Carisi was standing super close to the bartender. She pulled the keys from her pocket as she dialed the familiar number.
-xXx-
The next day, the group of three began to drive home in the car they rented from the airport when they first arrived. The one-way flight was less than two hours, and the drive home is gonna be almost eight, but apparently Heather can't fly. Annabelle didn't question it, just wanting to get home. They separated when they arrived at a gas station that was on the outskirts of the state of New York to refill the gas tank, Heather having to go to the restroom. "Me and Sharla, my best friend, we used to dream about going to New York City. We'd throw our hats in the air and everything."
"did Sharla ever make it?"
"She went to Clarksville, Tennessee. I know it's not the same as New York City, but I'm still kinda jealous. She went with Gary, her husband, he sales machine parts. Besides, I gotta take care of momma.
"You could've went with her."
The conversation ended when Carisi came out of the station, until Heather broke the silence once more, "am I gonna be able to meet him?"
Annabelle turned around to look at the brunette, who was looking out the window, "who?"
She smiled, "the monster."
"Oh, you'll meet him for sure," Carisi spoke up.
-xXx-
The fifth of December dawned bright, the snow clouds from the day before disappearing overnight, allowing the sun to shine. She pulled on a pair of navy-blue pants with a matching blazer with a pale pink shirt underneath it. She paired a set of heels the same color as the shirt with the outfit, knowing she'd be in court today for part of Heather's trial, as she would have to testify. After she was sworn in, Rafael began the questions of how they discovered it was Heather. "We traced the texts from an IP address in West Virginia. The computer belonged to Heather Parcell. She sent over one thousand text messages to Andy McFearson and over six hundred posing as Katy over a six week period."
"Is it possible that she was hacked?"
"She confessed to catfishing Andy and Katy before we arrested her." The questions went by for a few more minutes, before her husband sat back down and the defense attorney stood up.
"When Heather confessed did you get the idea that she realized the gravity of what she'd done?"
"I can't speak to her state of mind."
"Did Heather Parcell ever express her opinion of the monster to you?"
She shrugged at his question, "she was excited to meet him."
"Would you say she idolized him?"
"I would say she wanted to meet him."
"But she was a fan."
"Obviously."
"Do you think a fan would want to see him go to prison for rape?"
Rafael stood up the moment the last word was out of the attorney's mouth, "objection!"
-xXx-
"You look kinda sexy when you're so focused," Annabelle stated as she looked at her husband. His suit jacket was gone, and his sleeves were rolled up to the elbow, the veins in his forearm prominent as he scribbled on a legal pad.
He looked up, "you always look sexy, so…" he trailed off as she giggled.
"Lina is lying down. Wants a good night kiss." He nodded before standing up, pressing his lips to his wife's cheek as he passed.
When he came back into the room, she had changed into her pajamas for the night, which consisted of a pair of black lace panties and a Mickey Mouse tank top that showed a sliver of her stomach as she was sitting in her desk chair, one leg underneath her but as she typed away at her laptop. "You look frustrated."
"Heather Parcell," she sighed.
"the internet has made the world a smaller place, but some people still get lost in it."
"She caused a rape, Rafael."
"it was dumb. She had no motive."
"Stupidity is not a defense, and you know it."
Rafael sighed, "this is a bad case. No motive. No true reason."
She nodded, "this is the most exciting thing that has ever happened in her life." He didn't answer, and the pair worked together in silence for another hour before she slammed her notebook shut, "fuck it. I'm done with this."
He glanced over, before grinning, "is that a kid's notebook?"
"It's Disney. Screw you." She tried to glare, "why are you smiling at me?"
"It's just nice to see you enjoying Disney again."
-xXx-
"it looked like you wanted to be friends with the monster," Rafael spoke as he clicked a screen inside the courtroom.
"He's famous. Who wouldn't?"
"Read this text."
"My girlfriend would like to come with us," she looked uncomfortable as her photo showed up on the screen.
"You sent this to him?"
"yes."
"Pretending to be Katy?"
"yes."
"And how did he respond?"
"He said no. He just wanted alone time with Katy."
"And when you sent the same message and the same picture to Katy, pretending to be the monster…what did she say?"
"She wanted to be alone with Andy."
"And neither one wanted to be with you."
"Objection," her attorney shouted.
"Withdrawn. What would you have done if one of them had said yes?"
"Objection!"
The judge spoke calmly, "sustained."
Rafael turned to his table, stopping to take a small sip of water, "so, you are your mother's primary caretaker, is that right?"
"There's no one else."
"You feed her, you bathe her, you wash her hair."
"Relevance," the defense attorney questioned.
Rafael spoke before the judge could, "it'll become clear."
The man in the black robe nodded, "proceed."
"yes," heather muttered.
"What shampoo do you use?"
"Oh, come on. Objection!"
"it'll prove intent, your honor."
"Overruled," the judge spoke before nodding at Heather to answer.
"we use…blue glacier shampoo."
"Who's Blimpy 89, Miss Parcell?"
"It's me on Reddit. It's a name I sometimes use."
Rafael turned from Heather to grab the clicker again, "I'd like to introduce this into evidence. Exhibit 24B," he handed the defense attorney and judge a copy, "please read this Reddit post." Once she read it, he spoke again, "you posted that on Reddit at 9:48pm on November sixth. Is that right?"
"I guess."
"How many Instagram followers do you have?" She didn't answer, so he gave her the same face he gives Catalina when she's doing something wrong.
"I don't know."
"Miss Miller has over two hundred thousand. The monster has five million. How many Instagram followers do you have?"
"I don't know."
"You have six. Sound, about right?"
"I guess," she muttered.
"it isn't fair. He beats up people for a living. She posts sexy photos of herself holding shampoo. You resent them both, don't you, Heather? You work so hard to take care of your mom, and nobody cares. Nobody gives a damn about what you have to say about anything."
"I never meant to hurt Andy."
"What about Katy?"
"she's from Pensacola. It's not much bigger than Maysville," she froze before anger overtook her features, "she posts naked photos of herself and they make her rich. I have to rub momma's feet!"
"You wanted to get even."
"It's not fair! She gets paid to take a shower!" Katy clenched Annabelle's hand when Heather started shouting again. "I change momma's poop bag! She deserves what she got! It's not fair." She paused, taking a deep breath before looking at Andy, "I'm sorry."
An hour later, Annabelle was walking out of the courtroom with the squad and Rafael, all of them happy about a guilty verdict. Olivia was talking to Katy when Annabelle noticed Andy McFearson standing off to the side, looking at the group. Giving Rafael's hand a squeeze, she made her way over to him and his attorney. "How you feel?"
"Guilty. I can't believe I hurt so much. That I didn't realize I wasn't even talking to her."
Annabelle brought her hand up to give his arm a comforting squeeze, "I know. It was wrong, and Heather hurt both of you. You'll have to live with it for the rest of your life. You both will. The pain will get better though. People will know that it was a catfish, that you aren't that kind of guy."
They were silent for a few more minutes, "thanks," he paused, "for all of it. If I ever have a fight you want to come to, just let me know."
She gave a slight chuckle, "okay."
"we've set everything so that only people I follow can message me. No more catfish mistakes."
"I'm glad you are being safe. Good luck, Andy."
-xXx-
That night, the squad was joined by Rafael to celebrate the victory, a first for New York. Catfishing had never been a felony before, and now both Katy and Andy got justice. The group was laughing about a story that Fin was telling when her phone lit up on top of the table, Rafael glancing down at it automatically, "Andy McFearson just followed you on Instagram."
"I swear if it's a catfish after this case, I'll go off on them." She quickly unlocked her phone to look at the page of the new follower. "Oh. It's actually him. That's cool." Her brow furrowed as she caught the suspicious look Rafael was giving her, "what?"
"Nada," he sipped his scotch before taking a small bite of his steak, seeming to stab it a bit more forcefully than needed. It wasn't until they got home that night that he brought it up again, "so you spend a lot of time with him?"
"Who?"
"The monster. You had to of for him to have enough of a connection to follow you on social media."
"He offered us tickets to any of his future fights. He was grateful. He probably just followed me to follow me."
"You think he'd be smarter with the entire situation."
She shrugged, "he changed his settings so only people he follows can message him."
"Oh? You know this how? Been texting?"
"What? No. We spoke outside the courtroom." She paused in taking her make up off to join him in the bedroom so that she didn't have to yell to speak anymore, "are you trying to argue with me?"
"I'm just trying to figure out your relationship."
"My relationship? With Andy?" She had her hands on her hips as she stared at him, "What kind of relationship do you think we have? We've literally spoken maybe a dozen times."
"Just making sure."
"Making sure of what? Do you seriously think that I'd get on you with a guy we arrested?! What the hell is wrong with you, Rafael?"
"You just seemed pretty close to him, that's all."
She rolled her eyes, "I'm going to bed."
"You still have your make up on and this conversation isn't over."
"It's over or I'm going to end up punching you in the face."
