Chapter 94: Green
There were many things Kagome missed after she passed through the well for the final time.
She longed to lay her head on her mother's shoulder, to needle her little brother about stealing the last onigiri, to actually pay attention to her grandfather's stories. Granted, she had done a better job of doing that in the three years while the well was sealed - no matter how ridiculous they were.
There were a few things of hers waiting when she returned to the past, her worn yellow backpack and bike remaining behind after the well sealed with her on the other side. Her decision had happened so fast that there wasn't time to think of what she would need, just to say good-bye to her mother.
In those first days, Kagome cataloged the belongings that Kaede kept safe for her - extra pairs of modern underwear and bras, even a nearly full box of sanitary supplies. The medicine in the first aid kit was no longer good, but the bandages were. Sango confessed to liberating a few to patch up Miroku after a particularly bad youkai extermination, but Kagome was more relieved to see them go to some use.
She found her algebra book forgotten at the bottom of the bag. She gleefully burned the hated thing.
She rode her bike until the chain snapped, and no one quite knew how to fix it. Kagome removed the saddle as a reminder of the past and had Inuyasha break up the remaining parts and bury them for future archaeologists to puzzle over.
But as she lay pregnant with their child, she suddenly wished for her school uniform.
"Why?" Inuyasha asked, puzzled.
"Why not? It's something to pass down to them of how we met." Kagome absently rubbed her stomach. "There's no guarantee they'll be able to pass back through the well, and we haven't even tried in case ..."
"We're not risking it," he insisted, and she agreed.
"Especially not now. But, still, I wish I had something of that time to pass down to our child."
He snorted. "We can tell them. Miroku won't shut up about it if the kid asks."
"It's just something tangible, that's all." Kagome felt the baby kick and thought that in some ways, life had been much simpler when she wore a school uniform and her days were spent leaping back and forth through time.
She closed her eyes and yearned for her mother.
Author's note: The original title of this chapter was "Green." This takes place after the end of the manga and does lightly allude to Yashahime.
