DISCLAIMER: This story is based off of "Kendo no Go: A Fanfic in 100 Chapters" by Akai Kitsune. Her story in turn is a parody of "In the Language of Love," a story by Diane Schoemperlen. My thanks and appreciation goes out to Akai Kitsune for letting me borrow her fic idea! "Inuyasha" is the property of Rumiko Takahashi.
Chapter 95: Letter
The letter arrived the day Souta graduated high school, though he later realized it just happened to be an auspicious date plucked out of the air.
It came sealed in a box, delivered by a courier, from one of Tokyo's museums. The writing on the front was faded, but familiar. Underneath, it had been scrawled out again in a different hand, to ensure that the original wasn't faded over time.
"To Higurashi Souta, upon his graduation from high school" it read, and Souta felt his knees turn to water.
"Mama," he said, shaking hands putting the box on the table for his mother and grandfather to see. "It's from Kagome."
Their mother pressed a hand to her mouth as Souta carefully opened the box to reveal the letter, safeguarded from time for centuries. He could still see the lines of the notebook paper and remembered that some of Kagome's things had remained in the past when the Shikon no Tama disappeared.
It took longer than he wanted, for them to carefully unroll the paper.
There were precious few words printed, and in a rushed hand. But it was from Kagome.
"Souta," she wrote, "congratulations on your graduation. In a few years, something is going to happen, something terrible, and I am going to need your help. I can't tell you too much, but I will be sending you something that you need to keep safe for me, for Inuyasha, for everyone. You'll know when you get it. My love to you, to Mama, and to Jii-chan. Kagome."
"A package?" Mama asked.
What package? Souta puzzled over the next few years as he went through university. Then, one day, newly into adulthood, he looked into the eyes of a hanyou child clad in fire-sooted clothing and Kagome's letter suddenly became clear.
Package, he chuckled, as he scooped up the girl he suspected at the very least was his niece and took her into his home.
Author's note: Those who have seen Yashahime know what the "package" Souta received is. Maybe one day we'll actually get the story leading up to this. The original theme for this chapter was "Salt."
