Anonymous Prompt: Could you write a Drabble where a woman wants too hurt Kensi and throw her out off balance by saying that she is never gonna have a baby, that she should stop trying since it'll never happen. And then we get to see the emotional impact it had on her. Is she gonna give up? Thanks already.
"I'm hungry." Deeks' eyes flicked up briefly to the rear view mirror and refocused on the road.
"We've got another hour to go," he answered, his tone just short of annoyed. The woman sitting in the back sighed heavily.
"I know you're probably tired of driving, but you know we'll get off track if we stop too often," Kensi reminded her, more kindly than she felt. They'd spent the last two days driving Tina Miller to testify in front of a grand jury. Kensi and Deeks were her body guards and escorts for the foreseeable future.
To say that she was less than cooperative was a definite understatement. Deeks had lost patience with her sometime yesterday afternoon and was now speaking in monosyllables whenever possible.
Kensi was just as annoyed but had decided to try and build a rapport with the other woman. Knowing she had a six year old daughter, Kensi had mentioned her own desire to have children. Tina had seemed mildly interested, but mostly just treated Kensi with thinly veiled animosity.
Deeks' method was looking more desirable every minute, but Kensi figured that keeping on speaking terms with Tina was probably a good idea.
"I bet you'll be happy to see your daughter when you get back," Kensi nudged. She saw Deeks glance her way with a raised eyebrow. He shook his head a little but didn't say anything.
"Actually, she prefers her father. Which is fine by me. Children can be so…sticky and loud," Tina drawled, reclining in her seat like it was a throne.
Deeks muttered something under his breath which Kensi didn't quite catch. It was probably a good thing.
They were silent for the remainder of the ride until Deeks pulled into the parking lot of a Holiday Inn. Tina scoffed, as she did every time she saw their new accommodations.
"I'm taking a shower," she announced once they were checked in, leaving Deeks to carry her belongings. Deeks just rolled his eyes, used to it by now.
"I don't know why you keep talking to her," he said the minute the bathroom door closed and the fan turned on. Kensi shrugged and started unpacking what she'd need for the night.
"It's not like it's hurting anything," she said. "And I know it's unlikely, but maybe she'll actually listen to what I'm saying." Deeks snorted at that as he wrapped his arms around her waist and bent to kiss her. He pulled back with a gentle smile and Kensi leaned into his touch.
They'd kept their relationship on the down low, thinking that Tina didn't need that particular bit of information in her arsenal. So they'd been sneaking small touches in when they could.
"That is very unlikely. But the fact that you keep trying is one of the things I love about you." He kissed her again and then grabbed his keys from the particle board dresser on their side of the room. "Ok, I'm gonna go grab us some dinner. Have fun."
Kensi smacked his butt as he sauntered out of the room, leaving her alone with their resident ray of sunshine. She was halfway through a text to update Callen and Sam when Tina came out, dressed in leggings and an oversized sweater.
She flopped onto one of the beds, letting out a deep sigh which Kensi ignored.
"I don't see why you had to confiscate my phone," she said, eyeing Kensi's phone jealously. "It's not like I plan on calling anyone." Kensi glanced up briefly from the screen.
"So you wouldn't take the chance to call your daughter?" Kensi asked. "Or your boyfriend?" Tina laughed, shaking her head at Kensi's apparent naivety.
"I told you before, I'm not a big fan of children. And I hate everyone else I know." Kensi didn't know what to say, so she fiddled with her phone for a couple more minutes.
"You don't have any kids, right?" Kensi was surprised by the question and Tina's obvious interest as she leaned towards her.
"No," Kensi said and there was a hint of wistfulness she could quite conceal.
"But you want one?" Tina asked, clearly remembering their earlier conversation. Something about her tone made Kensi wonder if this topic was a good idea.
"I think we're getting a little too personal."
"Oh come on, Agent Blye. We've been sharing a hotel for three days now, it's already too personal." When Kensi didn't say anything else, she leaned forward with a predatory glint in her eye.
"You can't get pregnant, can you?" she guessed. "I bet you've been trying for a while."
"Tina, I really don't want to talk about this," Kensi said, getting up and aimlessly walking to the other side of the room, which only made Tina smile more.
"It's not going to happen. You're what, going on 40?" Tina looked her up and down and Kensi felt as though she could see all her flaws. "If you've been trying this long it's pointless."
Despite herself, Kensi felt each and every word Tina said. All her insecurities about getting pregnant suddenly came rushing back. Gathering as much bravado as she could, Kensi tried to sound as unaffected as she could.
"I don't know what you're trying achieve her, Tina, but it's not working," she said and Tina just rolled her eyes.
"Of course it is. Because you know I'm right," Tina countered. "If you haven't gotten pregnant yet, you never will. You might as well give up now and save yourself a lot of heartache." Having delivered the final blow, she sat back against the pillows with a pleased smile.
There was a scraping sound by the door and Deeks walked in a moment later, carrying a large paper bag.
"Hey, the best I could find on short notice was Chipotle," he announced cheerfully. Apparently the time away had boosted his spirits. Kensi remained frozen in the middle room, Tina's playing on a loop in her mind, as Deeks started pulling out plastic containers.
"You better not have gotten beans on mine," Tina warned him, getting up to watch over his shoulder. Deeks ignored her, wordlessly handing her some kind of burrito bowl before he walked over to Kensi with a container of tacos.
"I got you carnitas," he told her, holding out her food with a frown. "Are you ok? You look weird."
Kensi gave herself a little shake, forcing a smile.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just tired." For the rest of the night, she tried to act normal, but every time she looked at Tina, she could only, wonder is she was right. And as she lay in the slightly stiff bed, she finally let a few tears escape.
Maybe the last year had all been in vain, she thought hopelessly.
