Chapter 36

Callie was now 17 weeks pregnant and starting to show. She had an appointment scheduled that afternoon for her and Arizona to see the sex of their little peanuts. They wanted to set up the nursery and to start buying stuff. So far, she had not experienced a lot of morning sickness, but today, her children decided she had it easy for long enough. She was bent over the toilet for the second time that morning. Arizona had been called in early that morning and was just going to meet Callie for her appointment later that day. After emptying what little she had in her stomach, she grabbed a wet cloth and wiped her face and slumped back against the bathtub.

'Ok, you two. Calm down in there. I don't have anything left in my stomach.' Callie said to her stomach. Her pregnancy had been very enjoyable up until that morning. She was not enjoying this so much. Her throat was sore, her stomach was sore and she just wanted it to stop. She gathered herself up and flushed the toilet. She dragged her feet to her closet and started getting ready for the day. She grabbed a pair of jeans and a loose blouse. She slipped the shirt over her head and sat down on her bed to put her pants on. She put her feet into the leg holes and stood and pulled the jeans the rest of the way up noticing immediately that her pants were not going to button. 'Oh no.' she said. Today was not going very well. She yanked the pants back off and grabbed another pair from her closet. Again, they wouldn't button. 'UGH! Fuck!' This was getting stupid. She started tearing up. Nothing she had would fit her.

She reached for her phone and called her wife. It rang twice and Arizona picked up. 'Hello Calliope!' she chirped. She was having a great morning.

'Arizona.' Callie croaked. She was a blubbering mess hearing Arizona's perky tone when she was having such a bad morning.

'What's wrong, my love? Don't cry.' Arizona said into the phone. She couldn't stand the sadness in Callie's voice.

'I'm fat! I have nothing to wear today. And I keep throwing up!' she cried into the phone.

'Aw Baby, you're not fat. You're beautiful. The twins are just growing and we will get some medicine from Addison today. We'll go shopping and get some maternity pants. Ok? Please stop crying.' Arizona pleaded. She started to gather her bag and keys to make her way home. Her wife needed her. 'Calliope, please try to calm down. I'll be there in a little bit ok? I'm coming home to get you. Just take a deep breath.'

Callie did what Arizona told her and inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly. It helped a little and she had calmed down enough to talk again. 'I'm sorry Arizona. I'm just having a bad day. You don't have to come all the way home. I'll be ok. Just stay at the hospital.'

'I'll be there soon Baby. You are sad and it is my job to make you happy. I was just waiting around until our appointment anyway. I'll be there soon.'

'Ok. I love you. I'll see you when you get here.' Callie said.

'I love you too.'

Callie hung up the phone and took another deep breath. Then she felt it again. The need to get sick. She raised her hand to her mouth and ran back to the toilet.

Arizona came home and raced inside. Callie was nowhere to be found on the ground floor. She took the stairs two at a time and went straight into their bedroom. She didn't see Callie in the bedroom anywhere, but heard shuffling in the bathroom. She walked over and pushed the door open. She caught sight of Callie in the mirror. She was sitting on the floor and grabbing her stomach. She was rocking back and forth and Arizona could tell that she was in pain. 'Calliope!' she gasped as she ran over to her wife. 'What's happening?'

'Stomach hurts.' Callie rasped out. She had gotten sick again and again. Her throat was raw and she was so sore.

'Let's get you to the hospital. Do you think you can sit down on the toilet? I'll get you some sweatpants to wear.' Arizona asked. Callie nodded. Arizona helped her to her feet and sat her on the toilet. 'I'll be right back, my love.' Callie nodded again.

Arizona ran to the dresser and grabbed Callie's most comfortable pair of sweatpants and a more comfortable long sleeve shirt to wear. She quickly walked back to the bathroom and slid the pants up Callie's legs. She lifted her shirt off and threw it into the hamper. She had gotten sick on it a little bit. Arizona made a mental note to throw it in the wash later. She helped Callie into the comfy shirt and placed a kiss on her forehead. 'I'll get your shoes and jacket and we'll go see Addison.'

They were in the car within five minutes. Callie was hoping they could get to the hospital before she was sick again. The drive to the hospital seemed to take longer than usual for Callie. She was in so much pain and she wanted some relief. Arizona pulled right up to the ER entrance. She jumped out of the car and threw her keys to an intern. 'Park my car. You better not put a scratch on it!' she hollered as she opened her wife's door.

They made their way into the ER. 'Callie! Is everything ok? What's going on?' Amber rushed over to the women.

'She's been sick all morning and has been doubled over in pain.' Arizona said.

'Ok, come on. We'll get her into a bed. I'll page Addison.' Amber escorted her friends to the empty bed and pulled the curtain. She snapped on some gloves and told an intern to page Dr. Montgomery. 'I'll just take some blood and have them rush the results. We'll check to see if anything else is going on.' Amber wrapped the tourniquet around her friend's arm and collected the blood sample. 'Addison should be here soon. I'll run this up to the lab real quick.'

Arizona nodded rubbing Callie's arm. Amber squeezed Callie's hand before rushing up to the lab. It was only a few minutes before Addison popped her head through the curtain. 'Hey ladies. Let's see what we have going on here.' Addison pulled the portable ultrasound through the curtain and turned it on. She lifted Callie's shirt carefully and squirted cold gel onto her stomach. She quickly found what she was looking for.

'Callie look!' Arizona reached down and grasped Callie's hand. 'Do you see them? They're so beautiful.'

Callie looked up at the screen and suddenly the pain disappeared. There were her babies. She could make out their heads and their little arms and legs. She had tears in her eyes for a completely different reason now.

'I can tell she is dehydrated so I want to keep her here overnight and push fluids.' Addison said. Arizona turned to look at her. Callie's eyes were fixed on the screen. She didn't care what they were doing to her, as long as her babies were ok. 'The results from the lab should be ready within an hour. Amber said she put a rush on them.'

The intern from outside came up to them with a wheelchair and Arizona's car keys. Callie got in the chair and was wheeled up to a room where she would be spending the night. She changed into the hospital gown and got into the bed. 'Can we see the babies again?' she asked Addison when she came into the room.

'Sure Cal. I'll be right back.' She came back a few minutes later and did as Callie asked. Her babies were on the screen again. Their heartbeats echoing off of the walls in the room. She was in awe.

'Our babies, Arizona. Those are our babies.' Callie said looking up at her wife.

'Those are our babies. Our beautiful healthy babies.'

There was a knock at the door and Amber poked her head in. 'The results are back.' she said coming into the room fully. 'You have a slight case of food poisoning. It may have come across as morning sickness with the whole getting sick thing. Oh look… babies!' she said turning her head to the screen. 'Wow guys, they look good. I gotta run. I hope you feel better Callie.'

Callie turned to her friend. 'I'm feeling better already knowing that they are ok.' Amber nodded and headed back down to the ER.

'You want to know the sex of the babies?' Addison asked.

'Yes please!' Arizona exclaimed. They were so ready to know.

'Baby A looks to be a healthy little baby boy.' Addison said. 'And baby B is a slightly smaller, but still healthy looking little girl.'

'Oh my God, Arizona. One of each! That's perfect. We both get what we wanted.' Callie broke down again. She couldn't stop the tears and this time it was for a very good reason.

'My babies. A boy and girl. Oh Calliope. I am so happy right now.' She leaned down and kissed Callie deeply conveying all the love she felt for the woman and their two unborn children.

'I'll get the pictures printed and the video made of the ultrasound. I have a feeling you will be watching it on repeat until these two are born.' Addison laughed.

'Thank you Addison.'

'These are the moments where I love my job the most. I'll have a nurse come in and set up your IV also. Congratulations guys.'

The next day, Callie was feeling much better. Addison went ahead and gave her a prescription to help with morning sickness just in case it got worse. She was discharged from the hospital and Arizona was taking her home to rest for another day. Amber invited them over for dinner that night. Lexie was going to be there too. Callie and Arizona saw quite the positive change in their friend since she started seeing Lexie. She smiled and laughed more and that made the couple happy. Arizona pulled the car into Amber's driveway and they walked up to the door. They heard laughter from the other side. Callie reached up and rang the doorbell. Amber opened the door with a bouncy Riley on her hip. 'Look Riles, it's Callie and Zona! Yay!' She said to the little boy in a goofy baby voice. Riley started laughing at his silly Mama and her silly voice.

'Come in guys. Lex and Maci are making us pizzas.' She opened the door wider and stepped to the side for the women to come in.

They walked into the house and saw Lexie and Maci covered in flour, but laughing with each other. 'Callie, Zona. Me and Lexie are making pizzas!' Maci said excitedly when she saw the other women.

'I see that big girl. It looks yummy. Hey Lexie.' Callie said.

'Hey. How are you feeling?' Lexie asked.

'Better thank you.' Callie replied.

'Cool.' she turned her attention back to her little soux chef. 'Are we ready to add the sauce?'

'Yes Chef!' Maci replied smearing flour on her little apron.

'That is the cutest thing I have ever seen.' Arizona said.

Amber placed Riley in his bouncer and gestured for the two women to sit. 'Maci loves cooking with her. They act like they've been around each other forever instead of just a couple of months.'

'I see that. Everyone seems so happy. No one would ever guess what you all went through this year if they were to walk in right now.' Callie said.

'She's pretty damn amazing.' Amber turned her head to look at her girlfriend. Lexie looked up and winked at her. She turned back to her friends. 'Did you find out what you were having?'

'We did. We are having one of each!' Arizona exclaimed.

'Oh my God! That's so perfect. I'm so happy for you.' Amber said. Riley's toy went off making him laugh. 'I'm not sure if that was the toy or he's happy for you too. Probably both. He hasn't stopped laughing since he started.' Amber was quiet for a minute before she worked up enough courage to say what she wanted to say. 'I have had to take Maci to therapy. We talked about Tyler and Jared. She doesn't understand and I am really at a loss of what to tell her. So we have been seeing Dr. James again. The one who helped me back when my grandmother died.'

'That's good. I wouldn't know what to do either. Has Maci been acting out?' Callie asked.

'A little. She's been craving more attention and I get a little more attitude. I understand though and having Lexie around is helping. Maci wants pink dreads like her. Tyler hasn't seen the kids since the divorce. At all.'

'He's missing out on some great kids. Does she want the lip piercing too?' Arizona asked.

'Yes! And let me just say, I'm glad she can't see all of her piercings.' Amber laughed.

'TMI, Am.' Callie laughed.

'There's never TMI with you. Don't act like you don't tell me things about Arizona.' Amber looked at Callie who was looking a little flustered knowing she talked a lot about their sex life with her best friend.

'What have you told her Calliope?' Arizona was amused.

'She told me how you flooded the bathroom, that ride home from the hospital and the garage, the kitchen counter…' Amber said listing off on her fingers.

'Ok, that's enough.' Callie said.

'Calliope, Calliope. Don't be embarrassed now.' Amber teased her friend.

Lexie and Maci had put their pizzas in the oven. Lexie made her way to stand behind Amber with her hand still covered in flour. She looped her arm around Amber's front and smeared a floury handprint across her chest.

'ALEXANDRA GREY! You will pay for that!' Amber shot up from the couch and chased her girlfriend into the kitchen. She pinned her up against the counter.

'Kiss her Mama!' Maci shouted.

Amber wasn't really mad. She leaned in and placed a kiss against Lexie's lips. Lexie reached around and grabbed her ass leaving two flour handprints on her buttcheeks causing everyone to laugh. Amber wrapped her arms around Lexie and leaned into her. She was happy. Her kids were happy. Her best friends were happy. What more could they ask for?

Thank you for the wonderful reviews. I love hearing what everyone thinks. I have lots of ideas for this story and my time to write will be limited for the next week or so. I'll try to update as much as possible. Hope you have a great day.
