CHAPTER 33

Just like how Fillien left it, her hideout in the abandoned complex at midtown was empty of humans and unknown to Kraang and the Footclan. Fillien and Wimbi kept their heads low but peaked through a window to check the skies. The rocket they had seen while running away, they watched it explode as soon as they got to the hideout. Nothing else seemed out of place since then, but they were still wary.

"What are the Kraang up to?" Fillien asked.

"Whatever it may be, it must not have worked," Wimbi assured her. Then his eyes looked scanned the streets and the buildings in front of them. His interest made his head raise higher to try and see every detail of the city.

Fillien noticed this and asked, "Not used to a big city?"

"Well, Dar es Salem is much like New York City. The largest skyscrapers clustered together in front of a harbor, surrounded by buildings only half as tall. I can easily imagine people here in their cars and bikes crowding the streets. With stores and shops built alongside apartments like these. Everyone walking to work, the occasional street vendor." Wimbi looked at Fillien sheepishly. "I guess personally I'm not used to it since I've lived most of my life in Serengeties, but I'm sure the city should be lit even so late into the night."

"Oh yeah, you can blame the Kraang for cutting the power once they took over," Fillien told him as she stepped away from the window.

"I should have figured as much given what you've told me," Wimbi said before looking out one more time. Then he stepped back and followed Fillien to the back of the room to lay on the mattress next to hers. "I still can't believe that the Kraang had managed to mutate people. Where are they now?"

"Some friends of mine theorized they have them all in some Kraang facility for some plan, but they've been slowing them down by sabotaging their plans."

"Very brave. Is Karai with them?"

Fillien's ears lowered to the side and she looked down at her paws. Wimbi's smile went crooked and he then asked hesitantly, "Is… is she…?"

"She's fine," Fillien said quickly, "But she is alone. Again." And Fillien explained everything that happened since the girl's returned. From reuniting with the turtles to the new Foot mutants. Even the little details. "And Karai thought it was a good idea because she didn't want the Foot Clan coming after me. But I was once a member, so we face them together. She forgot that so easily."

Wimbi blinked several times before answering well, "Well now that I have a better idea of how this… Foot Clan is and your history with them, I can see why. She's trying to protect you."

"But what about her?"

"I think… I think when you find her, you will see she will be fine?"

"How can you be so sure?"

"Because she is strong. And if not before she was a mutant, then she is now. Because of you."

Fillien shook her head and looked at Wimbi in shock, "Me?"

"You inspire others. You give them strength," Wimbi finished strongly with a sincere smile.

Fillien felt the blood rush to her cheeks and she tried to hide a goofy smile by lowering her head and hiding her muzzle below her paws. "Wimbi…" Fillien whispered.

"I mean, you pushed me to do things I wouldn't normally do. Traversing the Atlantic ocean to find you."

Fillien still felt the air get warmer but the last sentence made Fillien raise her head again. "How did you find me?" She asked as her head cocked to the side.

"With the help of some apes I managed to cross the Congo safely and after a few days, I reached the ocean. I had help from so many creatures I've only ever heard of. Blue Whales, Spotted Dolphins, any that were kind enough to let me ride with them. Once I came to close to shore some dolphins told me of some unusual activity by the harbor. From there I just followed the trail. The Kraang chased me and well now you know."

"Now that's an adventure- wait a minute-" Fillien looked away, eyes narrowed as she calculated before she asked, "What about looking for your mom?"

Wimbi looked to the wall behind Fillien with a distant look, reminiscing on memories that came with the question. "Well, it was quite an… experience." He finally looked back to Fillien and said, "She was scared, of course, seeing a huge dire wolf jumping through a window to the kitchen. She tried hitting me with a broom but once I told her my name she stopped. She didn't believe me. She believed that I had been killed after I was kidnapped. And it didn't help when I told her what really happened. But then I told her that I had been living with the animals ever since I escaped, and I learned from them. What happened next… it was amazing."

Wimbi stopped when he said the last sentence with a croak in his voice. He cleared his throat to keep himself together as he continued, "She hugged me for so long. We were just there on the floor with her arms around my neck. She said… she said I always loved animals when I was an infant. I spoke to stray dogs and songbirds as if I understood them. I guess my mutation enhanced my gift."

Fillien had been smiling through the whole story. "That's beautiful Wimbi. I'm so happy for you." But then she frowned. "Why didn't you stay with her?"

"Um, well…" Wimbi now felt his cheeks flush as he said, "After a few weeks I had told her everything. When I got to talking about you she said to me that I can't let someone like you go so easily." He stood up from his mattress and went over to stand on hers. He toward over Fillien as she laid there in awe of his presence. Even though it looked like he was asserting his dominance, he didn't make such a move. Instead, he lowered his head and put his nose to touch the side of her muzzle. "I'll go visit my mother again. But in this life I have made, I choose to be with you."

Pure romance. It made Fillien melt inside and just let her muzzle rub against his. But the moment was ruined when the building shook in response to something outside. A bright pink light lit up the cloudy skies. The two mutants quickly rushed to the window to see the TCRI building, a tall building with a spire, shoot a surge of purple energy into the sky. "Looks like whatever the Kraang had planned for that rocket wasn't all they had planned for," Fillien said with a hiss.

Wimbi's ears twitched. "Is it always like this, with Kraang constantly having some sort of plan. A weapon?"

For about two minutes the light beam was the only light to be seen before disappeared and left the skies dark again. Fillien sighed, "Thank goodness. Last time that thing was one a giant ship managed to come through a portal."

"A giant ship? Wait- hold on- a portal? To where?"

"Dimension X, the Kraang dimension."

"What's a dimension?"

"It's like a whole different reality. Unlike different planets that are just a distance away, these different worlds exist in a different plane of existence."

"So you are saying, there is more Kraang? As in more than just on Earth? I… how do… " Wimbi's eyes shifted around and then he sat back with a loud thump as if he had gotten dizzy.

Fillien saw him tremble. She could only imagine what he was thinking of. Those nights being experimented on by Kraang. For the second time, Fillien wondered if it was a good idea or Wimbi to be here. But not wanting to go through that drama again, Fillien stepped away from the window and this time stood to tower over Wimbi. "How do I manage? I stand tall against them. They won't have you as long I'm around." Wimbi relaxed and they both sat next to each other for comfort. The light beam came back ten minutes later only for it to be on for a few seconds before it disappeared once more.

"What is going on? A malfunction?" Fillien asked herself as they both once again went up to the window. This time, they caught movement down below the building. Down in the street was a Kraang patrol of just three droids with blasters. But they had stopped because in front of them, two humans appeared out of nowhere. Yes, two, not kraang-like humans. Fillien and Wimbi gasped, watching as more and more humans appeared out of beams of light. As each group of humans appeared, each Kraang from that patrol disappeared. They even spotted some airships in the sky disappear as well.

"Not a malfunction. Your prayers answered!"

Humans coming back as if nothing happened. Kraang being sent away to who knows where. "What? No, this can't mean the end of this invasion… right? Suddenly, thousands of bright lights flashed in their eyes and they had to step back, turn around, and close their eyes. "It's true, it's really happening…" Fillien gasped as a big grin appeared on her face. "Come on!" Wimbi took a few moments to register that she wasn't by her side anymore.

Wimbi followed Fillien out the room, up some stairs and to the roof of the apartment complex. From there, they got a view of every light in New York City light up the dark city.. From the lamps on the streets, to the lights inside different rooms in the buildings. The sound of generators turning on for the first time in many months was heard like a rumble. Along with the sound of cheering from every New Yorker that had been returned.

"Étaient libres (We're free)…" Fillien almost whispered, "Oh my gosh- WIMBI! We're FREE!" She nearly jumped on the wolf in excitement, her front paws pushing on his shoulder as she almost made him her springboard. It was enough for him to topple over and loose his footing. But when he stood back up, he watched Fillien jump around excited. He loved her strength, but he especially loved her when she was joyful. Happy. Free.

Fillien stopped to trot over to him and nuzzle her face into his. "And you get to see it all happen. This has got to be the best day of-" She froze and stepped back, her eyes looking down as she frowned.

Wimbi knew what she was thinking. "We will find Karai soon. Then this will truly become the best days of your life. I'll help."

"Thank you, Wimbi." As the cheering of the citizens died down, Fillien came to a conclusion. "The Mutanimals. My friends. They had to be the ones to turn everything back to normal." She looked down at the streets and noticed that even though the Kraang were gone and the humans were back, the Kraang's crystalized trees that had grown out of random spots in the ground were still around. "Well, almost everything."

"Like I said, I will help."

"Help…" Fillien repeated. Fillien and Wimbi sat flank to flank with Fillien rubbing her head below Wimbi's chin. "How do we help?"
