Chapter 52 - Happy Birthday Keigo

Keigo woke up on December 28th feeling a warmth that wasn't from his wings. Opening one eye, he saw Dabi laying next to him in bed, eyes closed and a peaceful look on his face as he slept. Both arms were around Keigo and the older teen seemed to be holding him close. Keigo couldn't help but smile at the last few days. Dabi had stayed after Christmas, spending time with both Jin and Keigo practising outside the apartment complex. Jin was keeping his left eye covered almost all the time now, stating it's what the therapist told him to do. Keigo had played games with Dabi, they helped make dinner and played with Mila. And when Keigo had to go to an emergency as Hawks, Dabi was waiting for him to come back, eagerly listening to the newest story about Keigo's heroics.

One of the things Keigo loved the most, however, was the stolen kisses, held hands, cuddling and sleeping next to each other. He had little to no experience with dating or being in a relationship, but he imagined it was a lot like what he and Dabi were doing. Just being with him felt right, and Keigo had been experiencing these emotions since Dabi went by Toya and faked his death at the Todoroki estate. Dabi always seemed to run hot, and Jin had joked a few times that having Dabi around was like having a personal space heater.

Now, Keigo lifted his right hand to gently run his fingers through the soft black tips of Dabi's hair. Looking closely, he saw some white and red peeking from underneath at the hairline, and that made him curious, his fingers tracing along the older teen's scalp gently. Dabi inhaled deeply and when Keigo looked down, he saw bright turquoise eyes that always made his heart flutter staring at him with a lazy smirk. "Morning, pretty bird. Happy Birthday." Keigo grinned and buried his nose into the crook of Dabi's neck. Dabi moved to wrap his arms around Keigo fully, tugging him a bit closer. "Any plans for today?" Keigo nodded and mumbled before lifting his face to look at Dabi.

"Yeah, Jin will be over later and we planned to all go hang out at the mall. Later we're doing dinner and there's a cool thing we wanted to show you." Dabi raised an eyebrow. "Something you want to show me? It's your birthday. Wonder what I can do for your birthday to help it stand out." His hands started moving up Keigo's back to gently rub the base of his wings. Keigo's wings fluffed up as they shook and he dropped his face into Dabi's shoulder. "That feels amazing." Dabi grinned and warmed up his hands a bit. "How's that?" The blonde nodded and let a trilling noise out of his throat, which led Dabit to work on the area around his wings, his upper back. He watched as Keigo arched his back into Dabi's hands, his face already dusted with pink as he groaned. When he lifted his head to look at Dabi, the older teen leaned up to capture his lips in a kiss, keeping a smirk on his face. "Might have to save this for later, pretty bird. Don't want to wake your family with all the chirps and noises I'm planning to get from you. I am looking forward to seeing what touches you like or don't like." Keigo blushed harder as Dabi grinned and touched the side of his face. "This is ok?" Keigo nodded as Dabi moved his hand down to gently touch his chin. "This too?" Keigo nodded again as Dabi rolled him over and was suddenly on top of the younger teen, careful of his wings, he moved a hand to Keigo's hip, the other gently running along his shoulder blade as he whispered. "This?" Keigo swallowed and nodded quickly as he licked his lips.

Dabi smiled down at him and kissed his forehead before they heard a faint knock on the door. Keigo groaned and glanced at the door as Dabi moved to kiss his neck. "Who is it?" They both heard a little giggle as Mila spoke through the door. "It's me, Nii chan. Mommy says it's time for breakfast," Dabi moved his kisses to the other side of Keigo's neck, causing his wings to flutter and the blonde to roll his head the other way. "We'll- we'll be out in a minute!" The giggling grew fainter as she ran from the door and Dabi rested his elbows on either side of Keigo. "Guess it really will have to wait again, pretty bird." Keigo groaned and slapped a hand over his face. "Every time. I swear it's a conspiracy." Dabi laughed and moved to get up, adjusting his pajamas before helping to straighten Keigo's feathers when he got up. "Let's go eat breakfast and wait for Jin." Nodding, Keigo walked to the door and opened it, the smell of eggs and bacon filled the house. They both entered the kitchen to find Soji in a suit, grabbing some toast with his suitcase on a chair. Mila was attacking some eggs with gusto as if she was going to gobble them all up. Soji smiled at them both, an apologetic look on his face.

"Sorry about this, but I have to go into the office today. I promise I'll try to get out early though. At least in time for dinner and cake." He walked over giving Keigo a hug, keeping an arm around his shoulders as he herded him towards the bedroom. "Come on, I'll give you your gift now." Dabi watched them leave as Azumi gently rested a hand on his shoulder. "Have a seat and eat something. How are your sutures? Do you need them taken care of?" Dabi smiled and shook his head no as he sat next to Mila. "I'm alright Aunty, thanks." Mila looked at him with a faint chirp as she adjusted her wings around the back of the chair. "Today is Nii chan's birthday!" Dabi grinned at her. "I know. Do you have any plans for him?" Mila nodded as she shoveled another fork full of eggs into her mouth as Azumi set a plate of eggs and bacon in front of Dabi. "I made him a card and mommy helped me pick a present when we went out." Dabi reached over to rest a hand on her head, causing the little white haired girl to hold still, her blue eyes looking at Dabi curiously. "I'm sure he'll love it. He loves you very much." Mila beamed at Dabi, her wings fluttering. "I love him too! He's my Nii chan! And you're my Nii san and Jin is my Nii san!" Dabi laughed as Keigo walked back in, an envelope in hand and wiping his eyes as Soji stepped around him to grab his briefcase.

"Gotta go. I'll be back family." He paused to give Azumi a long loving kiss before he hurried out the door. Azumi hugged Keigo from behind and peeked over his shoulder. "You should put that somewhere safe and get something to eat." Dabi eyes the envelope curiously. "What is it?" Keigo smiled and pulled some documents out, turning them around to show Dabi. "It's a lease agreement for a small office building that will be finished next year. The building was remodeled and the interiors are still being assembled, but they're leasing out offices in it. Dad got me a contract starting when I'm 18 for 2 years for three levels of the building. It's a huge leap towards my own agency. I don't know how he managed it." Azumi placed a place in front of Keigo and set some toast in front of Mila, who started eating the toast as if she was starving. "We wanted to help you get a head start. You might choose to move your agency or open a second one, but we figured this would be a great start." Keigo grinned and started eating as Mila trilled, seeing Keigo at the table eating his breakfast.

"I got you something, Nii chan. Can I give it to you after breakfast?" Keigo smiled at her and ruffled the top of her head. "Sure little bird. I'm excited about it." The younger girl was practically hopping in her seat as she hurried to finish her food. Azumi managed to make sure they all ate and shooed both teenagers out of the kitchen when she went to clean up, telling them she didn't need help. The boys got dressed and were in the living room hanging out when Mila came running up with a messily wrapped present and handmade card on a piece of construction paper. Keiog lifted Mila to sit in his lap as he opened the card reading it outloud to her. Then he opened the package, seeing a glittering silver and red feather keychain. Keigo's bird instincts took over briefly as he chirped and moved the keychain to catch the light. "This is super cool! Thank you, Mila." She giggled and turned to hug him, still sitting in his lap. She looked at Dabi who was smirking as he looked at the keychain and was admiring the puffed up wings and blown pupils of Keigo's bird-like reaction. He always was intrigued by animal styled quirks. There was a knock on the door and Mila hopped up to run and get Azumi. "Mommy! Mommy! The door!" The teenagers laughed andKeigo moved to clip the keychain on his jeans as Azumi opened the door to find Jin on the other side. He grinned and hugged Azumi, then hugged Mila before running ofer to tackle Dabi and Keigo.

"My Dudeth! Happy Birthday, Keigo!" He had a gift bag in his clawed hand, and wasn't wearing an eyepatch over his left eye. The stitches and skin around the eye was slightly red, but the eyeball looked normal and like his other one. "Doctor thayth my eye ith miraculouthly better and I'm not gonna lose my vithon." Keigo grinned and wrapped an arm around his shoulders as Dabi tilted his head. "Huh, the therapy worked that fast?" Jin shook his head no, eyes on Mila as she followed Azumi back to the kitchen. "Thomeone with a really good healing quirk helped me out. They healed my eye but not the thtitches or thcarring around my eye. That will probably Thcar ath it health." Dabi gently grabbed Jin's chin and peered at his eye as Jin handed off the gift bag to Keigo. "Huh, that's one hell of a healing quirk. I'm guessing it wasn't the same two that worked on you before." Jin shook his head no. "Nope, but I promithed I would keep their identity a thecret." Keigo opened the gift bad and grinned at new radio headphones with light up cat ears on top. "Nice! Will these sync up with you earbuds and radio frequencies?" Jin nodded and pointed to the small holes on the left side. "Altho they have a built in Mic tho you don't need to affith a mic on your cheek."

Keig grinned and slid them on. He was wearing a red and white hoodie with a denim jacket over it with worn jeans. The headphones fit well with his outfit as he grinned to his two friends. "This is already the best birthday." Dabi smirked and stood, offering Keigo a hand as Jin crawled off the sofa. "Well, if you're ready to go out to the mall, we can go now and be back for dinner and cake." Jin nodded excitedly, eager to spend time with his two best friends. Keigo grabbed Dabi's hand and only let go briefly to let Dabi pull on the short blue wool coat he got for Christmas, and to slide a medical mask over his face. Keigo let Azumi know they were all going out to the mall and would be back later in the day. His mom smiled and gave him a big hug. "You're growing up so fast. I remember your first birthday with me like it was yesterday. Pro ball with Gran Torino and pizza." Keigo grinned and trilled slightly in his throat as hugged his mom tighter. "I think we'll have just as much fun today. Promise we'll be back before dinner." She planted a kiss on his forehead before walking them all to the door so she could shut it behind them. The teenagers were rowdy as they walked for the elevator, Dabi holding a hand out for Keigo to take, and the blonde happily taking it as he let his friends lead the way for his birthday.

Soji got into the office and smiled at Rubi, asking for some tea as he headed for his desk. Akina was already in, going over some legal paperwork for Keigo, and Nero was out serving papers already. If it weren't for the importance of some of these cases, Soji would have stayed home with his family. He knew the boys wanted to go to the mall for a few hours, and he would have been happy to drive them, but the law firm was getting more and more needful cases. People who were being taken advantage of by large companies or employers who were pro heroes, but were shorting them wages and time off. It upset Soji how many of their cases involved heroes to begin with. Heroes were supposed to hold onto an ideal that was helping everyone. Like All Might, always saving everyone with a smile, and the man oozed positivity in everything he did. There was a case he had against Endeavor, and Soji had been stalling a bit on it because of Dabi. He had been shocked to see what had become of Toya Todoroki, with his scars and sutures. Every time he saw Toya, he remembered the night Keigo told them about the abuse his friend had been suffering and how he had chosen to burn himself up rather than let his father put a hand on him.

Akina's voice snapped him out of his thoughts as his brother grinned. "Hey, I see you got the Endeavor case." Soji nodded and opened the folder. "Yeah. One of his sidekicks is suing him for abuse, injuries on the job that Endeavor refused to pay for, and threatening the guy when he said he was going to let the authorities know." Akina nodded and held up his own folder. "I have some paperwork for the Commission in regards to Keigo, plus I grabbed another one which is a training contract with the Commission. Might as well keep my lovely reputation of annoying them." Soji nodded and glanced through the folder at each page. "You think I could get Enji to settle?" Akina shook his head. "Not a chance. The guy has more money then all of us combined, and he always throws the best lawyers at his legal problems. Personally, I think you're gonna hit a bunch of walls, but the guy requested you because he needed help and was told you would be the best suited to help him." Soji grunted and started making notes on a legal pad of things he would need to ask about and documentation he would need, as well as getting ready to call the client for a meeting.

"I'll do what I can, but I want to get out of here early today. It's Keigo's birthday and I'm not missing dinner and cake. I promised him." His brother smiled and nodded as Rubi walked in with a tray of tea and fixings. "I know you won't break a promise, especially not to Keigo or Azumi. How is Mila doing? I haven't had a chance to meet her yet." Soji thought and glanced up at Akina. "She's well. We have a bit of information on her previous family, both seem to be dead, but it leaves some serious questions about a quirk that's isn't just traits of wings. I might ask to look through the database of unsolved cases if that's ok?" Akina nodded as Rubi clapped her hands together. "She looks like a sweetheart. I seriously can't wait until she's comfortable enough for us all to meet her. I know they say to take a few months of just immediate family first but it's so exciting to have another family member." Soji grinned and leaned on his right fist as he looked at Rubi.

"I'm surprised none of you have gotten on me for adopting both kids instead of having my own. So far it's just you and Nero that have gotten anywhere there." Rubi slapped his shoulder, a mock hurt look on her face. "You know Azumi can't have children. You told us when you two started dating. Adopting is the best way to give children who need it love and help Azumi to get over her inability to have children. I bet it crushed her when it happened. It would be cruel to be offended or upset about something like that. That's not what family does." Soji nodded and a thought came across his mind. "Hey, her case isn't solved, is it?" Akina shook his head no. "Nope. I was looking at that the other day. I don't know why, but it just struck me to look at the unsolved file. They never caught the guy who did it." Soji looked at the photo of himself, Azumi and Keigo who looked about 13 that was resting on his desk, a second small frame with Mila hugging a bear next to it. Soji loved his family and was always willing to do anything he could to keep them safe. He'd encouraged his family to take on the Commission over Keigo, and made sure those involved in Azumi's kidnapping were sentenced to a very long prison term, including Ren Hamada. There were still two things he felt he needed to resolve to finish securing his family's safety. Finding out more about Mila's family and what happened to them, and finding out who had assaulted Azumi all those years ago.

His wife was always giving her all to both of their children. She had raised Keigo as if he were truly her own, and Soji loved her dearly for her kind heart and open giving nature. She had taken Toya into her heart as one of her own, helping him as much as she could. Soji wanted to help the older teenager after finding out what he had been through. A part of him kept what Endeavor had done in the back of his mind, in case he had a chance to stick it to the man for the cruelty he inflicted on his own son. Now there was Mila. The little girl with no family, who had become a comfortable member so easily as if she had always belonged with them. She looked like Soji, and despite Azumi spending more time with her, she seemed to always want to climb into his lap, listen to him read to her, have him tuck her into bed, and play with her when she wasn't sure what to do around the apartment. This was his family, and he wanted to protect them. He would always protect them. Nodding a final affirmation to whatever Rubi had said, she left his office, as did Akina. Soji glanced at the door as he booted up his computer and logged into the case file database for lawyers and public defenders. He began looking up both Mila and Azumi's files, looking for anything he could of the assault and rape of Azumi Tayaka and the death of the sidekick Soothe. Setting an alarm on his phone, he got to work printing files and setting up an appointment to talk to Endeavor's sidekick and pulling files from previous cases against the flaming hero.

He needed to be done by this afternoon, which meant he had to hustle. And hustle he did.

Keigo, Dabi and Jin got back to the apartment around 6pm. Azumi and Mila were setting the table for dinner, Soji in the living room to put music on in the background having changed out of his suit. The boys were excited about their day out, showing both adults the pictures from picture booths they squished into, talking about karaoke and the arcade they got to enjoy, and Keigo showed them a thin red chain that hooked to his watch and looped around to a bracelet he wore further down his arm. Knowing the boys had one more thing planned for the day, Azumi made sure to herd them all to the kitchen, Mila flapping her wings excitedly because she hadn't had a meal with all three of them yet. It made her feel special to have three people she could see as brothers. Dinner was fried chicken, okonomiyaki, and pot stickers with sauce. All foods the three boys liked, but all made with chicken as Keigo liked. She even had a special plate with pot stickers that had more raw chicken inside just for Keigo.

It took Dabi and Jin a bit to get over how his pupils blew out wide and black with a yellow ring around them and his wings poised like a hawk eating a meal and threatening anyone who came after it. Azumi and Soji didn't seem to mind his mannerisms, but the two teenagers hadn't seen Keigo do this before, and it was taking a bit of getting used to. Mila stared at him, her wings tight on her back, but slowly ate her food as if studying what Keigo was doing. She had no such craving for raw meat, her bird traits were a small song bird, not a bird of prey. After food, Azumi brought out a large round cake with the number 17 on top in two candles. After everyone sang, Keigo looked thoughtful, a glance at Dabi before he blew out both candles. Dabi gave him a wink and mouthed 'I know what you wished for' causing Keigo to blush furiously as he was handed a slice of cake. They made short work of it, since the family was bigger now than previous years. After they finished dinner and cake, Soji handed Keigo a card from his Uncle Akina and Uncle Nero, and a small package from his grandfather that had come in the mail. Keigo grinned and opened them as Jin talked to Azumi about the pre planned basket of snacks and canned coffee they would need for their next and last stop for Keigo's birthday. She handed it to Jin, and he smiled at how heavy it was. Dabi watched as Keigo opened the card to find a gift card to a restaurant he had never been to before. The small package had a small penknife inside, with a sturdy blade and red wood handle. Smiling softly, Keigo put the knife in his pocket immediately, giving Soji a hug because the rest of the Nakamura family wasn't there to receive it.

Once Jin was ready, he commented that they needed to fly to where they were going, causing Dabi to go pale. Keigo snickered and stepped up behind him, arms going around his waist. "I can carry you, hot stuff. Unless you want Jin to carry you with his feet." Dabi shook his head quickly and glared at Keigo. "Just know I get motion sick, so no loops of fast dives, birdy." Keigo laughed and the teenagers headed for the balcony outside. Mila tried to follow, pouting when Azumi pulled her back. "Sorry sweety, you can't fly like your brother, you'll have to sit this one out." Keigo gave Mila a wink and watched Jin take off with the backet clutched in his feet. He stepped behind Dabi and wrapped his arms securely around him, like he had the first time he took Toya flying to the roof, and carefully spread his wings taking off into the air after Jin.

Dabi squeezed his eyes shut and clung to Keigo's arms. The younger teen had used his legs to wrap around Dabi's legs, keeping him flush against his body, his arms sturdy and unrelenting as his wings flapped with strong steady flaps and glides. By the time Dabi decided to actually peek an eye open, he stared in awe at how high up they were, flying over the northern part of Fukuoka. This was where there were parks, ice skating rinks, a small amusement park with a water park, and a large pavilion for performances. It looked like Jin was just ahead of them, heading for the top of the half shell stage overhang in the pavilion, Keigo landing next to his friend carefully and holding Dabi until he got his feet stable underneath him. "We're here!"

They could see everything from up top of the pavilion. Jin was already sitting off to the side, feet dangling over the edge and swinging back and forth as he pointed. "Look! The amuthement park hath everything lit up tonight!" Keigo grinned and kept hold of Dabi's hand as they walked over to sit next to Jin. The three were sitting in a row with Keigo in the middle, his fingers interlocked with Dabi's as he smiled brightly at the lit up carriages on the roller coaster. "So, you wanted to come to this place to people watch?" Dabi seemed confused. Keigo looked embarrassed and rubbed the back of his neck. "Actually, there is something here we wanted you to see. We figured you would enjoy it, and yeah, everything is lit up including fireworks later tonight. They apparently do this every year from Christmas Eve to New Years Eve. And since my birthday is between the two, it's a great place to hang out and relax." Jin held up a can of coffee and grinned. "Pluth Aunty Thumi packed uth a bunch of thnackth and drinkth tho we don't have to go down for anything."

They enjoyed the view for half an hour, pointing to things they each found funny as they drank canned sweet coffee and munched on chips. Jin had laughed himself silly at the sight of a boy and girl arguing about who was more scared to get on a rollercoaster, the boy ending up screaming in a shrill high pitched screech as his hair glowed because of his quirk. Keigo seemed interested in the ice skating rink, commenting he had never been before, but trying to point it out to Dabi as he leaned his head on the black haired teenager's shoulder. Turning his turquoise eyes to the ice rink, he froze, his breath hitching in his throat. He couldn't believe what he was seeing. How had Keigo known they would be here? Was it really them? It had to be that hair was unmistakable.

The first one he noticed was Shoto. His half red-half white hair was unmistakable. He was gliding along on ice skates, a tall and athletic looking 11 year old He was wearing a jacket and scarf, his mismatched eyes glancing back towards the young woman behind him. She was wearing glasses now, her white hair with faint red in it reminded Dabi of his own hair under the hair dye. It had started red, and gained white as he got older. Her's had been born white with bits of red in it. Fuyami looked happy and like she was having fun. She was holding hands with a tall broadly built young boy, a teenager with the same eyes as her, but more white hair than red. Natsuo was struggling to balance on the ice, possibly because he had never done it before. They all looked relaxed, happy, and Enji was nowhere in sight as Dabi scanned the crowds and edge of the ice rink.

Jin glanced over at Dabi and Keigo lifted his head to check on Dabi as well. "Hey, breathe." Dabi let out his held breath and stared at his siblings skating around on the ice rink. "How-you two knew about this?" Keigo grinned and nodded. "I told you I keep in touch with your sister. She told me they were coming here tonight and I may have mentioned some of the activities they could take advantage of." Dabi glanced at Keigo, but kept his gaze on the three, a longing in his eyes. "They look relaxed and happy." Keigo nodded as Jin spoke. "I wath told Endeavor ith never home unleth he ith teaching the youngetht. The hero I work with doethn't like Endeavor, tho he told me a bit about it." Dabi frowned hearing about the treatment of Shoto, but it wasn't until he felt his eyes burning that he realized he would be crying if his tear ducts weren't burnt and scarred.

"You guys...thank you." Keigo leaned his head back on Dabi's shoulder as Dabi put an arm around the young teenager. Jin smirked at the two before resting his hands crossed behind his head as he looked down at all the people, a smile on his face. He hoped they would always have moments like these. Moments where they could be themselves and not the heroes of underground vigilante's that had agendas and goals. For JIn, these were his brothers, and he wanted to always be able to have these calm peace times with them. No matter what he had to do to get it.
