Chapter 14: Noble Pressure
May 28th. A few minutes after 7 PM.
(Osaka. Amato House.)
[Masahide]
Lowering it's speed, my ride makes it's way into my home. Meetings finished and formalities taken care of, I am officially back and on a week long leave from my duties.
I rest a cheek onto a softly coiled hand, my elbow leaning onto the door as I gaze at the shining shape of my house as we enter the large land lot it occupies. Eyes almost closed, my tongue quietly circles my palate.
The car comes to a stop, I straighten my posture and softly sigh. The day is coming to an end, yet the harshest meeting is soon to come.
"Well, we've arrived home." Matsudaira-san, my driver and new retainer, said as he looked back towards me. "It seems you will arrive just in time to share dinner with your family, sir."
"…Yes, so it seems." I chuckle, as I was trying to delay that to tomorrow for a variety of reasons. "In any case, thank you for your aid, Matsudaira-san. I shall be reviewing my coming duties tomorrow, so you can take the day off if you're not needed in any other activities."
"Thank you for your deference, Amato-sama. However, I doubt your lord Father would allow you to give me leave so easily." Sigh… I agree with you completely on this, my fellow.
"Regardless, these coming days won't be busy ones, I hope. I trust you have been given a schedule by now?"
"Ah, yes. Your lord Father has already prepared a few meetings for this coming week, as well as other activities. Worry not, I shall inform you of them in detail tomorrow."
"That will be appreciated. Well then, I have to be on my way. Have a good night, my fellow. You've earned it." I salute him with a small smile, he returns the gesture.
"No, thank you for your kindness, sir. As well as for letting me visit my daughter, she also sends you her gratitude."
"Ahaha, that is good to hear. Best wishes for the young one in her endeavors." He nods and I finally descend from the limo.
Grabbing the suitcase I had on me tightly, I crack my neck once I stood up outside, remaining watching for a moment as the car goes towards our garage. After sending a hand to my hair, caressing the spike that again formed above my forehead, I then slowly start walking the road into the house, decorated by trees and lights shining to the sides, arranged in a pattern making a lotus if one were to view it from above. All of it comes into my sight as the nostalgic scent of the floral fragrance coming from the near gardens envelops my surroundings. Two rows of vassals welcome me, standing to a side and bowing. I thank them as I pass, eyes fixated on the small open area near our entrance.
I gulp, inhaling deeply from my stomach, as my gaze encounters the other gazes that were searching for it as I approached my home. The lack of joy in their complexions lending credence to my doubts, I reach the small steps that would lead to the doors into my home. As I was taught since childhood, I stop before them and bow to my relatives who remain in place in the slightly higher grounds of the entrance.
"I have returned, Uncle."
"…Welcome back, Masahide." My fraternal uncle, wearing a loose teal and gray traditional attire, his graying marine blue hair trimmed short, he gave me a good stare, solemn and cold as his tone. Almost as tall as me, with his hair combed backwards, his lean shape hasn't changed at all in this year, it seems.
By his side, both of his sons were also present and gave me a nod when I looked their way. Both with the same marine blue hair arranged in the same fashion but without the gray strands that age creates, the older with an orange and white robe matching for his slimmer, shorter build while the younger had a dark green and black one as loosened as his father's, he has grown slightly since I last saw him but he still is at least a head shorter than me, even if I am but of average height for a Japanese.
The stern, inexpressive stares of my cousins reminded me of the rift that lies between us, of the grudges they bear towards me as a possible heir to the Head position within our family. Not displaying open enmity but with their gazes unfocused upon my figure, instead choosing to look somewhere slightly to a side so as to not meet my eyes while still not incurring their Father's wrath.
All of them had their arms folded, remaining still as statues, as they usually did in our meetings. Yet, what lurks in Uncle's eye is the opposite of what I was so used to see back in India, relaxation as if they had no intention to hurry in delivering a second sentence. I inhale with my nose, tightening my hold onto my suitcase as I await his words.
"…You took longer than we thought, considering how early the report of your arrival reached us. What kept you for so many hours in the Main House?" Uncle asks, that deep, almost menacing, tone that is his usual returning to my ears. I know it is his normal way of speaking, he means no offense nor hostility, but it is still frightening despite my years.
"Formalities, Uncle. It seems many matters needed to be taken care of, so I was made to wait until time could be given to my presence."
"I see… So for Yohime-sama you were a second priority. Perhaps even a third or fourth…" Uncle grasps his chin, his brows arching. My cousins wince, their lips curving into an unpleasant gesture.
"Nothing of the sort, Uncle. There were simply too many meetings to dedicate time to. I was given the proper attention when my time came to speak with Yohime-sama."
"Masahide, you are a high ranking Shinpan." Uncle says as he closes his eyes. "We are one of the four Houses that serve directly under the Koubuin, second only to the Guren House in terms of standing. It is true that one could argue that the Tsukuyomi House has gained the favor of the Koubuin family in these last years, but that by no means should undermine our importance."
His lips turn small and contracted, his eyes shine within the shadows of this night as a bat's, ready to fly onto it's prey, a screeching rejection flickering like a candle. My cousins' complexions remains severe, nodding to Uncle's words slowly.
"It is distressing to hear of them treating you in such a way, more so after the deeds you've performed for the honor of our faction." He shakes his head, the flickering candle residing within vanishing from his eyes, imitating perhaps his dwindling faith in our Regent. "In any case, let us go inside to give you the proper welcoming you deserve."
"…Of course." Whatever happened in this year? I do not recall them being this confrontational towards any of our fellows, much less towards Yohime-sama.
I climb the steps and reach their side as they turn and retreat to the door, we enter the house one behind the other.
"Congratulations on your first successful sortie, cousin." My older cousin says, falsehood crawling up his throat like vines on a forest, his ever so slightly narrowed brown eyes polishing his inner blade taking impulse to strike. "It has brought our house much honor to have you serve for so long, and in such important missions apparently. You've clearly done your station proud, regardless of the unfortunate accident you suffered that forced you to retreat." Why, of course you would mention it. Always at the ready to add seasoning to the wound.
"Thanks, this year I've been away has been a most severe one."
"If I may, Masahide…" My younger cousin now asked, arms still folded. "Did other pilots return to the Empire alongside you?"
"…Not as far as I know. IJA pilots were reshuffled into other squadrons, I believe." Those who were left able to still pilot, that is. Many did return with me, but to be sent to the proper rehabilitation facilities. "And the other unit of the Royal Guard did not sustain serious losses during our missions."
"…So you were the only one called back from the frontlines? My, it certainly seems like a stroke of good luck shone upon us, having you be relieved of the duty of standing on the frontlines." Both of them laugh quietly, mocking smiles contradicting their words.
I did expect them to use this against me. Being the sole survivor, I was called back since the members belonging to the Horn Battalion that were stationed in India would rather have fresh reinforcements from… 'trusted' sources. It is most strange, I did not think our relations with the Ikaruga House were strained to such lengths to have them refuse me, even if we did have our fair amount of disagreements with Takatsugu-sama and his men, but I cannot complain. It is thanks to this odd turn of events that I am here, even if it means enduring their poisoning words once more.
"It certainly does. After all, I now am able to continue to serve our Empire with the temperance I obtained in this year. In our soil, as opposed to under the UN." Using their own words against them, their laughter ceases and they frown. Uncle sends a look at them and both of my cousins then nod in silent acknowledgment.
They remain staring at me before looking elsewhere, allowing silence to accompany us on our walk. Before, I would have tried to make peace, to explain or justify myself. All for the sake of our unity, of the family. Yet, even if I desire to foster camaraderie within our ranks, your kind of nobles is the one I have the most trouble facing. No words could sow amicability in their hearts, no actions could ever have them pondering a different approach. I do know well that they harbor deep suspicions towards the UN, so thankfully I could force them into silence today to avoid an argument. However, this will only be an obstacle going forward. I inhale slowly, a foreign sense of dirtiness, as if my back were covered in foul sweat assails me.
It is just like Guren-sama and Maya-sama said, there are those within our ranks that are not going to be willing to understand, to take a different course of action. Then, if my feats in India are not enough to let my words make nest in their ears, to have them cease acting in such a petty manner, what could I possibly do to mend this rift from my humble position?
"Oh… Masahide?" A voice I recognize calls for me to my left, coming from a different corridor. "You have already returned?"
A slim, well defined figure walked towards us as I stopped in my tracks. Dressed in our crimson attire of the Guard, her head still adorned by a high, and very sharp, ponytail kept in place by a small white knot with the rest of her thistle hair flowing down to her waist, except for those two sharp, upward spikes she somehow manages to form on the sides just above her ears, unlike mine that is a result of my hair being rebellious. Her violet eyes greeted mine gaze as a smile flourished in her complexion. Refreshing as a spring breeze, charming as the sight of a multitude of petals scattering away to the Heavens, my older sister greeted me with a small bow once she got closer and I returned the gesture. As she did, I could more accurately seize her complexion, for now relaxed despite a slight tinge under her eyes, engraving of tiredness that also emanated from the brief delay in her steps.
Also… I know it to be but a petty detail on my observation… However, she seems to still be taller than me, even if only by a few centimeters now. …I thought I had finally catched up to her height. Sigh…
"Salutations, Sister. I arrived just a few minutes ago."
"I see…" She allowed one of her slender hands to wander to her hair, ruffling one of those spikes as she gives me a good pondering look. "It is a relief to see you in good shape. Are you to stay in the house from now on?"
"Raiko, you should not be asking such questions. We are busy, stand back and wait until tomorrow to speak with him." Uncle cut into our conversation, lowering his brows as he lets his hands wander to his back slowly.
Sister, however, does not seem keen on doing as told. As she usually does, she places her hands on her waist while she squints her eyes at him, curving her lips as I can already hear the reverberating avalanche coming from within them.
"And why would that be, Uncle? What reason is there for me to not be told of such a simple matter? A negative or positive answer would be plentiful enough without revealing any sensitive intel."
"Sigh… Your Father has ordered for Masahide to be taken to his presence posthaste, so that he can learn of what your brother knows before anyone. You shall have time to talk at large tomorrow, therefore you should not press the matter." Uncle again folded his arms, speaking slowly to avoid provoking her further.
"I am well aware of the arrangement. However, I did not think you would deny me even some small questions." She narrowed her eyes even more, the rearing sounds of an engine flaring alive in her voice, the violent flares of constant combustion in her irises.
"You know well the importance of this, Raiko." My older cousin said, also returning the narrowing. "How childish, to incite an argument over such a triviality." I was about to speak up, however Sister rose her chin at him, making him and me twitch as her own right eye did, and then exhaled through her nose.
"…I acknowledge I am, perhaps, being forceful. Worry not, I shall not hold you back further. Good night to you all." Huh? What does she mean? Is she not coming with for dinner? She then loosened her posture, looking my way and regaining a small smile. "I wish you a pleasant evening, and good luck with your report. Be seeing you tomorrow."
"…Yes. See you tomorrow." She then turns around and walks past me in the opposite direction we were going, with her steps now carrying a slightly faster pace. Looking at her stance, I again could not bring myself to speak up.
"Sigh… Why must she be this confrontational?" Uncle sighed as we once again resumed our walk towards the dining room.
"Uncle, why is Sister not joining us at the table?"
"…Ask your Father, I was not told of what has caused this argument." He answered, his voice weary, his shoulders descending.
"Do let me tell you it is not a rare occurrence." My older cousin said as he folded his arms. "Raiko has been in a foul mood for many moons in a row, and, as you've seen, her already short temper has dwindled even further. It has been most tiring to deal with her these last days." The three of them nod and breath deeply, slightly lowering their shoulders once they exhaled.
…I know Sister does have a short temper, in image of Father, however she was never this open in her opposition, much less towards Uncle who we do have a good relation with. What has been going on as of late? I have a bad feeling, first Uncle clearly shows an entangling displeasure towards Yohime-sama, now Sister is also openly displaying enmity towards our own. What in blazes happened?
We reach the dining room shortly after, a vassal bows to us and opens the door. I give her a small, acknowledging bow, unlike my relatives who walk past her without veering their gazes, and then I proceed beyond the door. Looking into the room, towards the end of the table that was laid on the center of the room, I spot a few things that differ from my memories.
The table now has fine layer of glass on top of the wood, there were a few candelabras atop it, yet they were not lit. Some of the furniture was moved, leaving a far wider view of the gardens available on the leftmost wall, that had it's window open to allow a gentle night breeze to accompany us in this meal. The wooden, decorated chairs remain unchanged, the soft cream color of the walls also is as it was. Plentiful light showered from the ceiling by the dangling lamps, clad in the usual silver shine of their polished frames, and the brightness they emanated rejoiced upon the luster of the wooden floor.
However, despite the beauty of the room, I could only feel a small, yet deep gash on my heart, as the regret of being the sole survivor assails me from beyond, making me feel a sudden acidity crawling up my throat, forcing me to retreat my tongue to the back of my mouth as the faces of my fellows return to me. And yet, I am left unable to do more than step forward, swallowing the toxins and wiping them off my gestures, towards the two who were present here.
"I have returned, Father." I bow to him deeply, remaining in position awaiting his words. I hear some footsteps, faint and fleeting.
I can tell he has shaved the distance, yet he has pronounced no word. I gulp slowly, making a conscious effort to not let my lips fall to the tension, becoming aware of my breathing to relax my stance. In… Out… Peace, he shall address me in due time.
"Hmm… Your posture surely has improved. Rise, Masahide." I do as told and meet his gaze.
Wrinkles naturally residing in his face, his gray eyes met mine undaunted, unchanged. Wearing an all-crimson traditional attire and just slightly taller than me, now with me having the wider shoulders after my training, and with his marine blue hair in his ever unchanging trimmed fashion, Father sized me up for a moment, a hand of his stroking his thin-shaved beard.
"…It seems your eyes have seen many truths, crude and raw, during your time away. I believe you suffered no injuries?"
"No, Father. I am in good health, thankfully." All thanks to the hypnotherapy and the personnel of the UN, who thankfully knows more about how to properly address emotional trauma than our fellows do, as much as it pains me to admit.
"I see. That is good, there is much work to do awaiting you. As a war veteran, I expect you to produce further honors for the family from now on, Masahide."
"…Yes, Father."
"Well, let us sit. We can talk while we have dinner." He returns to his position on an end of the table, signaling me to sit to his left on the corner.
As I do, I bow to who was in front of me sitting to his right. Mother, whose thistle hair was tied in a bun as usual, gave me a look and a subtle nod in acknowledgment, making her ash gray kimono sway slightly. Smaller than the rest, I believe I am now a head taller than her. Slim and graceful as a swan, yet unlike Yohime-sama her violet gaze is sharper and harder to endure, more akin to a gale than a gentle breeze despite the small smile ever present in Mother's face.
Father clapped and the vassals brought the food and drinks in a matter of seconds.
"For the safe return of Masahide and a fruitful result to our future endeavors." Father rose his cup, we all did the same and drank.
Waiting for him to start, we began this dinner in silence. Leaving the food for a moment in my mouth, savoring it's texture, I cannot help but to let my gaze sink into my plate. All those nights of eating synth food, resting on our tents after the BETA decided to attack suddenly or within our transports as we had to move to the proper area for one of our missions.
Many were the times where we joked about when it would be that we would enjoy another meal in our homes, yet I am the only one who ever could enjoy such a luxury. Once more feeling the acid tearing me from within, my lips grow tense and small as I fold a sigh and force the air slowly outwards from my nose.
"Now then, Masahide…" Father's words bring me back to reality, away from the septic hole that my thoughts were threatening to fall into. "…You returned at a rather late hour. How was your visit to the Koubuin House?"
Now being in his presence, I detail my visit as well as I could. Avoiding mentioning Takeru-kun or my talk with Guren-sama regarding what we saw that day, I observe his reactions to my words. It seems that what Maya-sama said was true, Father does now very subtly lowers the inner side of his brows when I mention how Yohime-sama left me waiting or how brief the meetings were, as Sister also does when she becomes upset. Of course, I mention not a word regarding my inner troubles since that would only serve to upset him further.
"Hmph… To think she would have the gall to leave you waiting for over an hour… And only to give you merely some minutes afterwards. Not even willing to share a table with you, or even a simple cup of tea. Pah! What could possibly have Yohime-sama been thinking?" Father closed his eyes and slowly went for his glass, Mother nodded in agreement as she ate.
"Well, it seems they were truly busy. Perhaps my visit suffered from an unlucky timing, I am sure there was no hidden meaning behind the wait." I know it is true, and I assume it has to do both with Takeru-kun's induction and instruction, as well as Yohime-sama having to be informed of all matters that Takahisa-sama used to attend himself.
It is no easy task, being a Regent. While I am sure Yohime-sama can delegate many tasks to both the Tsukuyomis and Gurens stationed in the Main House, there is still much to be done and arranged. We do not lack fellows, but there are times in which reports and unexpected setbacks simply pile up and take away what little order and free time one builds within an organization. Between our internal affairs and our collaboration with the UN, it is not a surprise. I am of the opinion that they must be handling all the paperwork and meetings quite well, truth be told.
"You're still naive at heart, my dear." Mother said, barely lifting her gaze from her plate. "Yohime-sama now carries the mantle of the Koubuin House on her shoulders and she should know what businesses to prioritize. The return of one of her highest ranking fellows should be one of the most important events she could have in the short term, and yet look at how you were received…"
Mother scowled, her old scolding tone that I haven't heard in many moons resurfaced, making even my cousins twitch, as her eyes brimming with embers and clouds of dark smoke narrowed. A combustion of dancing spires of fire and sparks jumping like rabbits over the woods would have less a destructive impact than Mother's gaze and tone as of now.
"All of us should have been called to celebrate the triumphal return of the last survivor of Takahisa-sama's squadron, that fought in a crucial mission of the UN gaining us much honor and recognition. Yet, she had you visit alone without any welcoming as far as we heard, she had you waiting for hours, and then simply dismissed you in a matter of minutes." Mother, you're twisting the facts. Yohime-sama did no such- "I simply cannot believe this turn of events, what have we done to become the recipient of such an uncaring treatment from our Lady?"
"Dear, please do not flare up so." Mother sent a gaze towards Father, he again lowered his brows once she remained as she was while going for her glass to drink.
"Mother, Yohime-sama did not display any sort of hostility towards my presence. Today was a busy day for the Main House, there is no need to take offense so deeply."
"Please, my dear Masahide. It is clear as day, she treated your visit as any other report we could have sent her in these months you were away. I would very much like to hear what matters had her occupied while you were forced to let the hours slip from your fingers in solitude, as if you were but a Tozama awaiting to be given the privilege to speak in her presence. Whatever has compelled our Lady to dismiss one of us in such way, I wonder." Even my cousins nod in agreement, voicing how I should had received 'the proper respect' I deserved, despite the asphyxiating air that had covered the table.
Of course, I cannot tell them of the reason why she lacked time, nor of the intel she revealed to me. I wasn't 'just on another visit', she did give me a proper welcoming, even if it was brief and austere, and trusted in me to aid the boy, despite what that intel could do to her standing. I close my eyes and remain silent, I should avoid pronouncing words on this matter. Master of one's silence and slave to one's words, after all.
"It is a worrisome state of affairs." Uncle comments as he lowers his chopsticks. "Where we once stood by the Koubuin's side alongside the Guren family, we have been slowly becoming ever distant since a few years back when they chose the Tsukuyomis as the new retainers of Takahisa-sama. And after his return home, this conduct towards Masahide's visit speaks volumes of the value our next Head has for the Main House."
My cousins grimaced at their father's words, but nodded all the same a moment after. Mother and Father were not hiding their displeasure, brows tensed in the same manner as when they scolded me for my failings or whenever they argued with Sister. Whatever has caused the atmosphere between our houses to grow this asphyxiating? Becoming distant… I never noticed such a thing while I was here, and Takahisa-sama did treat me with much respect on this last year. More than I deserved in my opinion, being so inexperienced.
"Masahide, allow me to ask you something." Father then directs a gaze my way, resting his chopsticks onto a cloth. "Did you, by any chance, happen to overhear whether Yuuhi-sama is truly going to become our next Regent?"
"…Yes, that is the case." I take a pause to drink, leaving a small space of silence. Lowering my glass with care, I look at Father for a second before speaking again. "Just as Takahisa-sama desired it to be." The fissures receded, the roaring of motors vanished from his rather tensely coiled hands as his gaze drifted away from mine.
"…However, I am sure Takahisa-sama did not intend for Yuuhi-sama to inherit the role at such a young age." Mother said, undaunted by my words.
"That is true." Father nodded. "It's certainly a precarious situation. Even if she were assigned as the Head, she is far too young to properly lead."
"…Father, I believe Takahisa-sama's wishes were clear enough." His lowered eyes slowly widened for a moment. Rising his chin, a hand of his shaking a vehicle coming to life, blazing combustion raging within him at my defiance of speaking out of turn assuredly, he held my gaze.
"Masahide, the girl is but a child. She is severely lacking in experience. Simply try picturing a meeting of our Regents, the Shogun and the other Heads are all mature and experienced leaders. And then, there will be the girl. And what of the rest of our businesses? Do you see such a young child negotiating with experienced CEOs? Guiding us and our fellows towards success?"
"While I do concede that Yuuhi-sama is far too young as of now, this could set an awful precedent. Father, who will decide when an heir is apt enough for the task? What if this only creates the notion that heirs can lose their birthright? This could create a chain of challenges and infighting within our ranks, not only for us but for all other Regent… No, for all the nobility." Just like how Guren-sama said my actions could have a far greater impact than I could possibly anticipate.
Repercussions far beyond our small power struggle within our ranks, not only for the heirs… but for who will be the ones dictating what the 'standards' are to be. If left to people like those who acted against the IJA while we were in India… I coil the hand that laid hidden under the table and away from sight, again pressing my tongue against my palate as Father's gaze meets mine in a silent and brief duel.
"Well, that is true. I had not thought of that." The combustion hasn't receded in his eyes as his brows narrowed.
"However, it is true that Yuuhi-sama is too young." Uncle commented after a drink. "And moreover, it is not yet time for her to lead. She is still in training, being instructed as we speak. There is also the possibility that she could be made into nothing more than a puppet, manipulated by the other Regents due to her inexperience."
"I agree with you." Father said after drinking. "Furthermore, until Yuuhi-sama can reach a satisfactory age and knowledge to properly lead, Yohime-sama will have to act as our Regent. I believe that… some others might not show the same respect and deference to her as they would to a proper leader who carries more moons on their shoulders." It is possible the other Regents will not heed Yohime-sama's words, since she does not have Koubuin blood in her.
"If that were the case…" I begin slowly, knowing that they might scold me for speaking without being allowed to. "…Whoever those people are, they would be most… foolish in their acting. Father, would you have allowed for Yohime-sama to have been insulted on these passing years?"
"Masahide… My loyalty is with the Koubuin House. What spawns this inquiry of yours?"
"It is simple, Father." I smile at him as I entwine my fingers, not recoiling under his firm stare. "Yohime-sama is the chosen of our Regent, therefore anyone who would dare to insult her is throwing mud at our mantle, thus becoming an enemy of the Koubuin House. Supporting our Lady to the best of our ability in the case someone dares to question her authority is what we should do, as some of the closest fellows she has. Is that not the duty of those of us who stand by a Regent's side?" Yet again using his own words against him, Father leans back on his seat as he strokes his hair. Uncle and his sons ponder the words for a moment, my cousins being the first ones to nod in agreement despite still not being willing to look my way.
"Ahem…" Mother then wipes her mouth with a cloth, narrowing her eyes at me. "I believe there will be a time to speak of this with Yohime-sama in private, to offer her our advice and ask for answers regarding today's meeting. Let us leave this matter behind, until the time to voice our opinion arrives." She then smiled my way, making Father loosen his posture and resume eating. "Now Masahide, dear, could you tell us what role Yohime-sama has bestowed you with? Are you to remain in the Main House in her service from now on?"
"…No, I am not. I have been tasked to lend my aid in our R&D efforts from now on." I expected her to react badly, however I did not expect Mother to be this adusted, a combustion stronger than Father's yet again rising like the morning sun in her eyes, the rumbling of a good engine coming to life possessing her hands for but a second.
"…Well, you are still young after all." She took a pause to drink, Uncle sighed softly and my cousins imitated his gesture. "In any case, having you lead a project is a worthy mission."
"…I am afraid to tell you I will be there not as a leader but as an advisor, a manager if you must. I will have underlings of my own, but I shall be there to support an ongoing project in the House's name." Lying to her is pointless, since she can usually make Father tell her of what happens within the house. It is only natural to do so now, at the least to not suffer the consequences of a questioning at a later date for hiding this from her. However…
"Oh, is that so?" Eyes closed, her words burned as shooting stars melting long before meeting the ground, but paired with the silent shattering of a few satellites being hit on the drop. "I wonder what could have compelled Yohime-sama to disregard our next heir's talents in such way." Perhaps, it could be because you're not hiding your animosity, Mother.
"Regardless, it is a fine step forward." Father says, giving Mother a side glance and then she continues to slowly eat, her eyes still locked onto me. "Masahide should nurture his ability to command others along an experienced fellow before being tasked to lead on his own. On this decision I find no fault, Yohime-sama chose the most fitting position for our son, Dear."
"Being part of the R&D section shall have you involved in many projects related to the war efforts, I'm sure." Uncle comments, nodding my way. "You have already been deployed to the frontlines, so this next step will have you learn of what happens within our factories and offices. I believe it is a good opportunity for you Masahide, to grow and learn from all points of views in preparation for your future." Father nodded to his words, despite my cousins looking away in clear disagreement while my free, hidden hand softly coiled again.
"Many are the praises you shall gain if this effort is a fruitful one, Masahide. I expect you to pour all the might of the Amato blood coursing through you into this endeavor." Father said. I nod, the rest return a faint smile my way. Father coughs, signaling that he is going to continue, to avoid Mother from returning to the questioning. "Now then, perhaps it is time for us to inform you of what has transpired in your absence."
Father then proceeded to tell me of our reorganization after Mother's brothers had an argument with some Tozamas serving under Yohime-sama. It seems our food brand is still within the top sellers, some of our Tozama fellows managed to generate some new protocols and programs for our inner affairs in our offices, despite Father still being rather obnoxiously against the implementation of mails and computers in all of our daily tasks, instead ordering to keep certain matters on paper as it has been since… well, forever.
Then, Mother made a point in voicing her opposition to the bureaucratic offices under us that have been 'meddling' in asking for more meetings with the UN and for us to send their bases higher quality synth food. It seems her brothers had a heated argument on this, regarding why, perhaps, it would be in our best interests to not tax the UN as we would to any other customer. The UN does seem to favor our brand of food over the others here, and it is true small gestures would do wonders for our relations with them, however, if they also do not polish their approach the situation won't improve soon. I know my maternal uncles are far more patient than Mother is, so I am sure some wording must have been unfortunate to have this come to pass.
Mother seems especially offended by the report a man named Tamase sent to us, due to how he kept insisting in said report that we should perhaps be the ones to show a gesture of goodwill towards the UN, despite him being 'nothing but a Tozama'. Since she is the type to hold a grudge I can only pray my fellow has good luck in his endeavors, lest he suffers from one of Mother's long sermons during a meeting.
Uncle said his role as an Instructor within the Guard is going well, despite how he believes our faction's trainees are dwindling in their performance. I know Uncle is closer to the Makabe approach despite not agreeing on how zealous they are about our traditions, so it is not strange. It is also worrisome, for Takeru-kun's future.
My cousins said not much is happening for them. My older cousin mentioned how taxing these last meetings with the UN and our fellows from other Regent Houses have been, agreeing with Mother in her venom towards this Tamase, while my younger cousins retold his eventual commissioning as a Royal Guard but a month ago. Father repined about how he was not placed in a squadron of our own but rather sent to train to one not assigned under a Regent House. I believe it will do him good, to interact with those not placed under the duty of the nobility as it will allow him to broaden his horizons, so long as he keeps his pride in check.
Thankfully, dinner was finished without any further discussions. Uncle and both of my cousins stood up after the thread of conversation died down, bowed to Father and left the room, Uncle giving me one last handshake and wishing me good luck from now on in his characteristic short and concise way of speaking.
So, if they were foretold to leave at some point…
"Well then, now that we're alone…" Father said, leaning forward and resting his elbows onto the glass-covered table. "Masahide, tell me what kept you away for so long today."
"Hm? I believe I have already-"
"Son, assuming everything is as you told, you would have been dismissed before six. Then, you would have arrived home far earlier than you did. Whatever kept you in the Main House?" Both of them stared at me, unblinking and firm.
"…I was merely receiving a small briefing regarding my soon-to-be personnel in the project." While it is true my final meeting ended much time before that hour, I had to return to my ride to check my diary and approach Guren-sama to deliver the name I promised.
I tried then to probe for some more intel, but he simply refused to answer and went his way after giving me a good pat on the back. Following that, I merely decided to rest for a spell while my retainer spoke with his daughter for a moment. We left before the clock reached the 1700 hours. The distance between the Main House and here is not grand enough to take three hours of travel, so I cannot excuse my tardiness.
"Therefore, I thought to do some reading on what was entrusted to me, and I lost track of time. My apologies, Father, Mother."
I was wanting to read the reports that were entrusted to me somewhere safe, somewhere you could not spy on them, since I know you will ask for intel regarding my endeavors and I have no intention of revealing anything to anyone except Yohime-sama, as the reports she gave me ordered. So, I now have the suitcase locked with an electronic password you will not be able to decipher.
"…Is that so?"
"My, you're still the same diligent boy, Masahide." Mother gave Father a side glance, pursing her lips for a moment.
"Well, in any case… Have you been told who will serve under you in this project?"
"Sadly, the details on the project must remain confidential. It is a highly important project, after all."
"So you can't even tell me, the current Head of the Amato House, your own father?"
"It has been ordered by our Regent, and it is a matter of grave importance to the Royal Guard as a whole. Speaking of it would only be detrimental to our standing, Father. It is expected of us to keep the veil of secrecy, no matter how tempting indulging our curiosity could be." Having been chosen to aid the Asuka Project in representation of the Koubuin House is indeed an honor to me. No amount of intimidation will make me talk.
"Hmm…" He groans for a moment, folding his arms, as he holds my gaze. When I do not relent, he lets some air from his nose as a bull would. "Tis is a very odd state of affairs. You are not to be the leader, yet this is a 'classified' matter…" I was fearing he would react negatively and raise his voice as he usually did whenever I kept something hidden from him, but Father instead smirked widely, drowning a chuckle within his lips. "Many are the honors we shall receive from this endeavor. Masahide, allow me to add some more retainers to you. I am convinced you will need quite a few trustworthy people during this project."
"No, it is alright Father. Some of our fellows are already part of this project. I am still nothing more than a 2nd Lt., to bestow me any more underlings would be unproper."
"Nonsense. Masahide, dear, you are the heir of the Amato House." Mother said, again with her scolding tone. "It is but an obvious choice to have more servants assigned to you, especially considering this endeavor seems to be of paramount importance for it to be kept a secret from us as well."
"I understand, however, I do not know whether imposing my men onto the project would be wise. It could be taken as a sign of defiance. I am still young, what would that say of my character to my fellows?"
"I believe there is nothing barring you from taking a retainer or two more with you, Masahide." Father said, going for his glass again and refilling it. "You're one of the highest ranking members of the Royal Guard as a Shinpan, regardless of your current military rank. No one would be foolish enough to oppose you over such a triviality. I am convinced you have your own ambitions for this project, so I find no fault in you using your resources to achieve them. It only shows your support to it, willing to bring more capable hands from the Amato House to the service of the project."
"…I suppose that is true." I do have my own goals, both for this project and for the long term. Offering my full support, if it is desired, would be a way to quickly melt the ice and show my goodwill to my new comrades.
Being a member of a Shinpan House, I suppose I could stand to be slightly more assertive as well. It still somehow feels wrong to propose such an arrangement out of the blue, and I rather discuss such matters over a cup of tea, however, my standing might for once become something useful to me, instead of making everybody I approach see me as a rival to surpass or a target to court.
Being a noble has been something akin to an anchor, despite the privileges that come with it. I have very few fellows I could consider close, and I've always been forced to outdo my peers in my studies. I have always made an effort to remain polite to avoid assumptions being made about my character, but maybe it is time for me to start planting my feet firmly when the need arises.
I do not wish to give Takamura-sama a bad impression of myself, but perhaps my station will allow to me to have some people listen to my words more closely, especially if I start delivering results. Perhaps then, I will be able to gain allies to mend this rift that lies in our nation. And to that end, I need to make my involvement in this project a success. In any case, having an assistant to aid me in familiarizing myself with this new task will surely be of much help, so I hope to avoid any possible misunderstandings by presenting these new retainers in this way.
"Now, I am sure you can continue this conversation tomorrow." Mother laid her glass on the table, directing a gaze my way. The way she smiled sent a shiver up my spine. I've seen that small smile many times, and none of those occasions were pleasant ones for me. "Masahide, dear, considering your feats and this new project you will be part of, perhaps it is high time for you to become engaged?"
"Oh, that is true." Father said, nodding as a soft smile appeared on his complexion as all possible stiffness and hostility lingering on his words vanished, swiftly as a well placed slash to a Grappler's pincers. "It might not yet be time, but you shall have to take your position as the next Head of the Amato House one day. I agree it is high time for you to choose a bride, Masahide. Well, options is not something you are lacking as of now, that's for sure." He then chuckled and smiled to which Mother shook her head in silent disagreement, I could only gulp and furrow my brows.
"Ahem… Father, Mother, is it imperative I take someone's hand as of now? I am barely breaching the twenties, and it is still too early for me to become the next Head. I would like to remain alone for the time being, to dedicate myself to my duties until I can spare time for my would-be partner."
"Masahide, dear, you were taught the traditions since an early age." Mother placed a pair of fingers on her chin, her eyes becoming sharp as a snake's. "When a Head is to be appointed it is expected for them to be already married, or for the ceremony soon to consummate itself. Since it is the marking of a new stage for the family, it is expected for the new leader to show his chosen partner to the rest of the house."
"…I do understand that." Very well, indeed. You have been particularly insistent on having me choose someone since I turned eighteen, Mother. "However, I do not feel ready, I do not believe me fitting for the task to lead the family. And, moreover, Sister could also become the next heir. She is your first born child, after all."
…
Both of them became stiff as statues, their eyes once again combusting alive.
"Masahide, I know you value your sister much, however, it is madness to even ponder the idea that a woman could become the Head of this house for even a second." Father said, barely restraining his frown.
"Why would that be? Yuuhi-sama will become our Regent, I believe that it wouldn't be odd."
"Masahide, my dear, did you properly ponder what you just said?"
"Yes, Mother. I do not see what could trouble you to such lengths. The Royal Guard forbids discrimination by gender, and this wouldn't be the first case of a woman being appointed as a Head. I believe Sister outperforms me in certain key areas, so I do believe she could fulfill the role as well I could." Furthermore, all possible heirs of the Tsukuyomi House are females. Therefore, it is not such a strange proposition, in my opinion.
"Sigh… Masahide, dear, while you might think highly of Raiko, the vast majority of the Heads of our fellow Shinpan houses will all be male and will surely be hostile towards her. It wouldn't be far-fetched for many to cut their ties with us, choosing to do business with other houses, or worse, with the Americans." Mother said, her tone still scorching bright. "Allowing Raiko to become our leader would send our house towards many rough years."
"Mother, I believe we live by the code? If Sister's actions prove her to be a worthy leader, then-"
"She won't even get the chance." Father said. "Do you truly think any of the current heads would allow her to voice her opinion, considering her attitude? You shall be the next Head of this house, Masahide. That is final."
"However, what is it that restricts her from creating new connections? And in any case, I doubt our fellows would disrespect her in such way once she becomes the Head. We are one of the most important Shinpan Houses, after all."
"Masahide, dear, think about your fellows' point of view, please." Mother said, pursing her lips. "It wouldn't surprise me if some of our fellows take offense in such an arrangement, even more considering the importance of our position in the Empire. Do remember that scouters are always at the ready to pry our best men from our side of the board. If we had no other choice, I could consider the most proper way to guide her to be the best possible Head she could become. However, we have you here, healthy and successful. And in any case, Raiko is not made to lead."
…Why do you speak of Sister in such way? I do know she has been rebellious towards your orders, and that she does have a short temper as well, but she is your flesh and blood. Mother, you should know better than anyone how heavy the burden on Sister's shoulders is.
"Mother, speaking of, why has Sister not been allowed to be at the table tonight?"
"What always happens." Father fumed as he folded his arms. I sigh as Mother nodded her head again. "Raiko disobeyed me, refusing to attend a courting meeting, and I forbid her from having dinner here for a week. Sigh… She does not have the temperance one would need to take the Head position."
"However, she still is my older sister, she should have priority-"
"I already made my decision, son. Raiko shall not be the next Head, that is your place to take. I won't risk the House's standing to suffer because of her."
"…Father, such discrimination is not tolerated. All of our fellows are to be treated equally. Sister deserves the same respect and opportunities as I."
"The Royal Guard as an organization does not tolerate such discrimination. In our own houses and businesses under the Shogunate, however, we should adhere to our traditions and be mindful of our fellows' views. It is true the 'male heir only' tradition has been abolished, however it would be foolhardy to appoint a female without good reason when a male can fulfill the role without any setbacks. The leading men won't accept Raiko as their equal, regardless of her talents. You should know that well, son." Mother nodded in agreement, leaving me void of air and retorts.
It is such a contradiction. It is those who stick to this vision and raise heirs that perpetuate this way of thought what generates this hostility towards women. If anyone dared to even fake an insult towards Mother, whoever that was should start asking how expensive it is to buy a cyborg eye due to what you'd do to them, Father. Yet, why can't you show that same affection towards Sister? Even you Mother, why do you not support her? You should know how hard it is for her to endure the constant unplesantry, Sister being one of the first female surface pilots of this family.
"It is just as your Father said. Our position is too important to risk placing our faith in her, Masahide." Mother said as she caressed her hair. "Our food brand, our bureaucratic offices, our small R&D sector, all of those are of vital importance for the Koubuin House's standing. Considering how the Tsukuyomi House will be forced to either place a female as their Head or have a noble of another house marry one of the young ones to take the Head position, we simply cannot allow ourselves to place Raiko as our leader since it would put our faction in a most precarious position. Such a course of action would gain us the animosity of the most conservative of our fellows, threatening our standing within the Royal Guard. Meetings between the Regents are already tense, and we need to remain strong to fend off the American's continuous low blows."
"And that's without even delving into her conduct." Father leans back on his seat, frowning. "A woman as direct as Raiko won't be welcomed by our higher echelons. There is a reason why we have not found a suitor for her yet, despite Raiko being a few years older than you." That is because you keep trying to have her marry someone far older than her, in hopes of having Sister 'settle down from her high horse'. "Many were the bridges that we could not build due to her reiterated negatives, many businesses could have been absorbed into our network if not for her not being willing to welcome the propositions of the many bachelors interested in her."
"…Is it truly imperative that you choose a partner for her, Father?"
"Of course. What good would it do to our house if she married someone of low standing?"
"However, it is clear forcing her won't yield good results. Perhaps, having a discussion with Sister regarding her wishes could aid you? I believe she merely wishes to prove herself before becoming engaged. I believe looking for someone who could complement her well instead of only filtering propositions based on what the men offers to our family would certainly ease Sister's opposition, even if only a little."
"Masahide, dear, it is madness what you propose." Mother lowered her eyelids and brows, her tone growing slow. "We are members of the Shinpan, and our duty is to further elevate the Amato House to serve our Regent and the Shogun to the best of our abilities. Therefore, for us to improve with each passing generation, it is obvious our heirs must find a partner that would bring boons that would be crucial to our endeavors."
Mother stops for a moment to caress her hair, a small smile returning to her despite her tone's grave, acidic melody.
"I myself had to prove that I was capable enough to aid your Father in his life, and that I did." Father smiles as he pours more water onto his glass, Mother laid her hands atop one another before again looking my way. "You, too, will have to find a woman that can both accompany you as your wife while also being someone with either skills, influence, or knowledge that would benefit the House's future. That is your duty as a noble, for we live to safeguard our people and land. We cannot allow ourselves to fall to complacency. Raiko, however, has been rejecting of everyone we brought to her, despite some of the suitors being successful individuals and also very patient towards her."
"Yet she continues to be defiant towards all men that wish to take her hand, and that would cause her to lose their support altogether if she became our leader." Father said, his voice with the speed of a turtle and lingering in it were the ashes of his inner blazes as he furrowed his brows once more. "As a father, I can only praise her steadfast stance and her willpower to hone herself and push through the obstacles she faces, but as a leader, I cannot compromise the standing of any of my servants by trusting in her, since she would dissolve many of the partnerships I have built in my time leading this house. Therefore, you shall be my heir, Masahide. You truly do not know how much joy it bring us to see you become the man you are now, son."
Then, both of them loosened their complexions, leaving the embers and fissures behind, leaving for a prairie of soft flowers blooming around. However, I could only gulp the cold rain that rained down on me. My legs quietly shaking, dancing aimlessly as if the floor crumbled. Nothing but a wide hole teared through my chest, raining anxiety upon my shoulders as I felt my throat grow smaller and smaller, what but a leaf slowly being scorched by surrounding flames.
…They truly do plan on making me the Head. I inhale slowly, looking down. If I don't accept the position, however… And if they also remain rejecting towards Sister… One of our cousins will take the position, and they are closer, far closer to the conservatives' views than even Uncle or Father are. And if that happens… I'll never be able to do anything but stare at the enlarging rift in our people.
Sigh… However… Me, becoming the leader? I hear a small sound, Father had cleared his throat to get my attention, Mother was also looking my way, her smile growing smaller.
"In any case, it is high time for you to start searching for a partner. Meditate on what are your weak points, so that you can choose a wife that complements you in your future duties, son." Father said, folding his arms and smiling my way.
I manage to nod and then I lower my head, avoiding their gazes as the waterfall of that mountain falls upon me once more. I once had resigned myself to such a fate, believing that an arranged marriage was but an inevitability. However…
Someone once told me of his struggles to tend to his 'loved' ones. That if their future was weeping, it was his duty to bestow upon it a smile. To value one's partner beyond what offerings it could present, to treat them as… well, partners in life. We're talking about the mother of my children, the one who would have to stand with me through hell and high tides. Choosing her merely based on what her family owns, on what she could do for me in service of my house… That is not who I wish her to be.
Perhaps I have become soft and foolish, yearning for human warmth after being on the frontlines for a year. Yet, I have no one in my heart as of now, since every woman that has approached me with intentions to court me have done so not because of my charms. I am not so arrogant to believe me to be that enticing a target. They only approach me due to my station, only wishing to earn their families the honor of becoming part of the Amato House's network. This is the same reason why Sister rejects all who have approached her, going by how she used to complain while we sparred in our dojo before I left for India.
"I know our duties as nobles are of great importance, Mother, Father. However, what good would do to our House if those who court us only do so to gain our favor? Such an intimate relationship built only on interests… That is not what I wish to build with the would-be mother of my children." Mother grasps her chin softly, pondering my words. Father, however, narrows his brows and shakes his head.
"Masahide, it is expected people will try to mingle with you due to having some sort of interest in said interaction. That is something you will not be able to escape, all will be aware of who you are and will then act based on their expectations and desired outcomes of a relation with you, be it in the Royal Guard, any of our businesses, or in the search for a partner." Father drank slowly as I twisted my lips, looking away from him. "To give you an example, as soon as the news of your survival and of the successful result of your last mission reached the Empire, many were the families that did not waste time in sending us their congratulations, asking if you still were single."
"Huh? Is that so? Were there many letters sent this time?" Father groans as he nods slowly as he goes for a drink, his brows again curving when he rested his glass on the table.
"Dear, I believe we received more than when he was assigned to Takahisa-sama's squadron, did we not?" Mother exhales through her nose loudly, making both of us twitch.
Barely opening her eyes, her mouth becoming smaller, she entwined a few of her fingers as it seemed as if a sudden gust of wind had assailed my eyes when our gazes met.
"Why, yes, that is the case. We received over ninety letters this time." What in blazes? Over ninety?! "Some younglings even had the gall to write them under their names instead of using their families' contacts, a few going as far as addressing my dear Masahide directly in the letter instead of the House as a whole. I swear, women these days…" Mother then sent a hand to her hair as she frowned, Father gave me a look as his eyes cascaded downwards, nodding slowly in apology for having released her wrath. "There was one who even dared to refer to you by name in her letter, despite using the proper honorific. Such insolence… Have they no shame, approaching you with such undeserved closeness? Who do they believe themselves to be?"
"M-Mother, it is alright. It was nothing but a formality."
"No, dear. It is anything but alright. Trying to gain your favor by displaying such crude behavior, with nothing but empty praise… I fail to see how could they believe you could ever fall in their vile clutches. Worry not, I have already burned those letters to ashes. Only a few select ones remain for you to read in your spare time."
"Does that mean that you have already a list of… possible candidates for me?" I thought she was merely jesting regarding that when I left for India.
"Why, yes, of course." Mother said, regaining her smile while I had to fold a sigh. Father, however, sighed in my stead and placed a few fingers on his temple. "Disregarding those unabashed ladies, I believe to have found a few candidates within the stream of letters that will suit your palate."
"…My palate?" I said as I grabbed my glass and slowly drank, raising a brow.
"Yes. Considering your attitude, and the ones your gaze wandered to during past meetings, I am certain you will find one of the candidates appealing enough for you in these letters. And worry not Masahide, I have taken your preferences in mind so I confirmed all of them have a generous a bosom as you seem to favor." What in blazes, Mother?!
"Cough! Cough!" What I was drinking found it's way to my lungs as Mother's words shocked me alive as the ringing of the 991 alarm.
"Dear, please! There is no need to mention such matters on the table. Masahide's decision should be based on the individual's worth, what she can bestow upon our house."
"My, you are most correct." Mother said as she put a hand softly onto a cheek a I had managed to subdue my choking. "However, said woman will also have to satisfy him as his wife, so considering Masahide's future it is only natural to also judge the possible candidates based on their beauty. The woman will have the duty of being the mother of our grandchildren, after all."
"Ahem… Mother, what have you based 'my palate' on? I know not of what has made you reach such a conclusion, however-"
"Masahide, do you not be thinking that you are capable of beguiling me." She narrowed her eyes, making me and Father tense up for a brief instant. "Must I remind you of how hesitant you were during that meeting when you finally joined the Royal Guard's Training Program, when the daughters of the Tsukuyomi and Kisaragi families had just blossomed? I seem to recall you were most anxious when the young female heirs of our fellowship had to interact with you."
"T-That was… I was young at the time. It is only a show of curtness to not stare at others for long periods of time."
"Would you say the same for all the other meetings we have had you take part in during these years? I can recite the names of all those you laid your eyes upon, if you are still interested in courting them." She met my gaze and for a moment only silence permeated the dining room, until I could do nothing more than to look down in embarrassment, to which Mother giggled. "There is nothing you should be ashamed of, dear. It is high time you begin to express your tastes without such hesitation."
"Dear, you cannot simply call out a man on such matters so openly, even if you're his mother." Father folded his arms, giving me a nod. "Masahide needs to gain confidence before he successfully attempts to court someone. Also, while it is obviously a factor, physical beauty should not be a deciding point. It could lead him astray were he to choose based on this outlook." I never thought Father would take my side on this kind of argument. Not that I ever thought this discussion would ever happen tonight in the first place.
However, Mother smiled quietly. Saying nothing for a moment, as if the wind was waiting for the right time to enforce it's hold onto the atmosphere, she then placed a finger on her lips and looked at Father, without pronouncing a word. He then slightly moved back, raising a brow as a hand of his seemed to twitch as if he had suddenly touched a source of heat.
"My, it is most curious hearing you take such a stance, my dear husband." Mother slowly said, still smiling. "Was it not because of my bosom that you chose to speak with me without even considering courting my older sisters first?" …Excuse me, what in blazes? I did not need to know that.
"D-Dear, I believe I already said that was nothing but a joke I made to lighten the mood, since you were too stiff and formal even during our private meetings." Father hesitating, almost stuttering?
"Oh, truly? Regardless, I believe you have not been displeased by my… features in these years. I am of the opinion that it is for the best for my dear Masahide's wife to be fitting for his tastes, so that he doesn't have to look elsewhere for… the satisfaction of his needs. Do you not agree, my dear husband?"
"Ahem… Well, of course… However…" Father fell silent as Mother again smiled, seeming more than willing to continue her assault.
"Excuse me, Mother… Could we perhaps return to the prior subject? I believe… my ears are not the proper recipient for this discussion as of now." Please, not like this… Let this night end on a more peaceful, proper note.
"I-Indeed, Masahide. Let us not dwell on such crude matters." Mother narrowed her eyes at him, Father became as stiff and silent as a statue under her gaze.
"It is no crude matter." Mother said solemnly, again looking my way. "If Masahide cannot even muster enough backbone to openly admit his tastes as you did when you courted me, he could fall prey to his basest urges at a later date if he continues to suppress them. Therefore, it is of vital importance for the family that he rids himself of this naivete, of this bashfulness that still resides in him. Otherwise, he might choose someone who might not please him wholly, or worse, his woman might not show the reverence that he deserves due to his shy attitude, falling into the foul thought that he isn't up to par to placate her desires."
…Would it truly end in such a way? Would women… look down on me for being reserved and timid? Do they truly prefer the roughness some of my peers display? …In any case, I can't even muster the strength to speak up. This is too embarrassing, to hear them bicker over… well, this matter is too much for my heart. My face feels as if it was being showered by a Jump Unit during a boost.
"I can see you mean well, Dear. However, Masahide has already triumphed over the fear of the invaders. I doubt he would submit to the treacherous seduction of a woman, much less to not be able to have her respect him as her husband."
"My, my… You seem to forget how easy it is for men to fall prey to their impulses with only a few sweet words and nothing but a faint touch. If he cannot even speak of the matter, blushing in silence as he is now, it is a possibility that his chosen could grow defiant. There is also the threat of her binding my dear to her whims with her vile charms."
"Ahem… Could you please stop, Mother, Father? This is most shameful to hear. It is true I am still inexperienced, but I do not believe approaching this in such a pessimistic manner would do us good. It is wrong to assume whoever my partner will be would try to betray me in such fashion."
"Nonsense, my dear." Mother again frowned, Father closed his eyes tightly as he went for another drink in hopes of bringing dusk to the sunset in his complexion. "Many are the ones that shall try to subdue you with their bodies, even after you are officially married. If we as your guardians do not teach you to beware of this weakness you possess, who will do so? I wish to see you a become a proud, successful Head of this house. I will not allow any vermin to lay their salacious hands on your heart."
Her eyes narrowed even more, sending me recoiling back further than any explosion's shockwave ever did back in India. What once could have been a canvas painted in vibrant colors detailing a shining visage now had turned dark and coarse, revealing the abstract monstrosities hidden within strokes, behind what usually never meets the eye. Mother took a moment of pause to instill her gaze into mine, and, once I timidly gave her the nod she was awaiting, she smiled before continuing.
"Therefore, it is imperative that you grow accustomed to speaking of these practices and for you to be confident enough to voice your preferences regarding your intimacy, so that you can make the most apt choice."
"…Yes, Mother."
"In any case, you, young man, will have to start looking for someone who suits your palate for what you expect your wife to be soon enough. There is a meeting prepared for next Wednesday to this end, as your official return to your duties."
"Eh? Is this the important matter that was coming this next week?"
"Why, of course. Your choice of a partner is a matter of paramount importance to the family, doubly so for us as your parents. Worry not, I have invited mostly people of our inner circles. Perhaps you will be able to test how your mettle fares against the charms of the young women of our fellows' houses on this occasion." Mother said with a smile as she brought a hand to her cheek.
"…I still would rather have the meeting happen on the dojo, with his peers of the Royal Guard. Formalities aside, there is nothing more invigorating than sharing a good cup of sake with one's comrades in arms." Father said, to which Mother lowered her eyelids and they held the other's gaze in silence for a moment. "Regardless, you will soon have to make this choice. There is still time, and your involvement in this project will only bestow you more honors and confidence. I believe you should not fret over this, son."
"Which is why he should prepare, since many are the ones that will chase after his affirmation." Mother said before drinking water, eyes almost closing. "I am sure you know well that the wife of the next Head of the Amato House has to be someone capable and trustworthy, my dear Masahide." She held my gaze and I could do nothing but to give another nod.
"I… I understand this very well, Mother. However, regardless of whether I become the next Head or not, when it comes to my future partner…" I look down and gulp, inhaling sharply with my nose. Giving me a second to calm my hands, I subdue the trembling of my lips. "I would like… the choice to be mine. I know our standing comes with certain responsibilities, however, I wish to be the one to choose. And… when I do…" I finally look up, this time not receding under their firm stares. "I want you to accept that someone without opposition."
If I do find the love that 1st Lt. Shirogane spoke of, that Takahisa-sama was always displaying towards Yohime-sama, and that I believe you two also share, then I would like them to accept that someone regardless of her station.
I know it is a tall ordeal, and it might never come to pass, however that is perhaps the only selfish wish I have in me, the one page of my life I myself wish to write before being forced to walk the path that fate has predetermined for me.
If I am to become the Head, if I cannot avoid that brand, I wish to form a family of my own with someone who chose me not because of my standing but for it to be a union born out of true affection.
For a moment, we only gazed at each other. The distant sound of a clock tickling the seconds away, the rustling of the wind, perhaps a faint pair of footsteps down the hallway. Once more aware of my own breathing, I feel the air slowly coming down my throat. In image of my attitude during a mission, I refused my eyelids' wish and forced them to remain open against the unseen, unfeeling gale that was coming from their deep stares.
With the slowness of a vehicle coming to life and moving, I curled my fingers inwards. Barely moving my feet to vanquish the odd sensation of having my legs being piked by the rumbling of a non-existent engine, I lowered my brows as I leaned back while once more inhaling as deeply as I could, starting to feel a cold sweat wishing to rain down on my back.
"It is good to see you can finally stand your ground with us, son. You truly are the right choice to succeed me." Father smirked, nodding slowly. "However, you should already know that we will closely revise this decision to make sure your chosen is the correct one."
"Certainly." Mother nodded. "As a good an appeal one of them can make, there are factors that you must keep in mind when choosing a bride, Masahide. Your standing as a high ranking Shinpan being the most obvious one, you should beware of those who come from too a modest station. I believe that low ranking Fudais are the minimal agreeable option, only because of how easily it would be for the other family to accept due to our position, so long as the woman brings good boons to the Amato House and she pledges her complete devotion to you."
"I agree, Dear. While I would suggest you to aim for a fellow Shinpan, I know competition has been fierce these past years between the Regent Houses' next heirs. I doubt you could find a partner of such station who is also willing to lose her family name."
"…You truly won't respect my decision if my chosen does not meet your standards?"
"…My dear Masahide, do not imitate your sister. You have an obligation to your fellows and servants, to safeguard their future by making this House as successful as it could be." Mother said slowly but with the sting of boiling water in every word surfacing fiercely as if a geyser they were.
"Your mother is correct. Your image is also an issue." Father furrowed his brows yet again, his eyes, however, could reflect the birth of embers as thunders struck at an innocent forest, his expression tense and strong as a fine steel plating. "Were you to marry a Tozama for example…" Mother frowned, making him almost stutter. "Ahem, many of your peers would surely mock you behind your back, believing you to not be seductive enough to claim even a low Fudai."
"…My partner is not something I have to 'claim', Father. Furthermore, my actions in service should be enough to prove my worth and dedication, and if I triumph no one will speak ill of me and my image won't be tarnished by vile rumors."
"However, that is what others will say of you, my dear Masahide." Mother remained unchanged. "Regardless of the kindness and affection you will undoubtedly bequeath to your chosen in your relationship or however fruitful the results of your efforts turn out to be, if you were to… truly choose a Tozama, many shall be the ones that will believe you to not be a good negotiator. A high ranking Shinpan as you could even aim towards a daughter of a Regent House, or perhaps a cousin outside of the succession branch. If you wish to be respected, your chosen must also be someone people will respect and approve of. She will be your closest one, the one all vassals of this house will bow down to."
I feel my lips quiver, my coiled fingers harming my hidden thumb. Taking a moment to rest her hands of her lap and looking upwards, Mother again emanated a combustion from her aura.
"Of course, someone from the New Zaibatsu is out of the question, regardless of their current standing." I have very rarely seen Mother so openly disgusted, as if a bird had perished and fallen on our gardens and she had happened to found it in the process of returning to the soil. "I can only agree with my dear husband in his wish for your wife to be of Shinpan station, but alas, one cannot deny the tall ordeal that would be finding a loyal wife within this rank in these times. Therefore, I do not object to you searching through certain Fudai families, if such a partner pleases your palate."
"Mother, New Zaibatsu or not, our fellows should all be judged equally. I believe Father must have not allowed anyone to disrespect you since you joined the family, and you also came from a Fudai household."
"Indeed, but that was because I earned the honor." Caressing her fringe, she returned my gaze as Father nodded. "I proved to your lord Grandfather that I was more than just a face, someone who could do more than to tend to others during the tea ceremony. I brought no burdens to your Father, all the contrary, we learned to support each other in what areas we dominated. I have served my lord husband and this house to the best of my abilities, both in my areas of expertise and as a mother. And your partner should do the same for you. Do you not wish to also find a partner that supports you as devotedly as I have supported your Father, my dear?"
"W-Well… Yes, I would like to, indeed. However-"
"Then, you should dispense with this humility you possess and judge people for what you see them to be, my dear. If a woman desires to be worthy of you, she will have to earn the privilege that is your gaze, she will have to prove her loyalty to this House. I believe I have given you a stellar example of what a lady of the Amato House should strive to be, so you should aim to have a fitting partner as I am for your Father, or perhaps going further and search for someone who would put my abilities to shame. As you said before, your chosen will be the mother of your children. Think very well what this entails, for you, for the family, and for our Regent's house."
"I couldn't possibility agree more with you, Dear." Father finished his drink and again faced me unfaltering. "I know you were always polite and humble towards all of our fellows, and I believe that to be a strong point of yours Masahide. However, there are certain moments in which you should allow yourself to show more pride and approach the situation based on what is more beneficial to you. You have to find someone who can play the part accordingly while also remaining loyal to you. And you should start seeing yourself as what you are, one of the most influential people of this Empire, someone who stands above the majority of the royal guards. And so, your partner has to be someone who can walk this perilous path that is being a Shinpan alongside you."
I look down, restraining a frown from forming. Slightly pressuring my tongue within my closed mouth, nothing is said for a few moments.
"In any case, I believe it is late already." Father said. "Prepare yourself well for this meeting, as it is the marking of your return to your duties and a chance to gauge how your peers see you as of now. Until then, however, you may relax and enjoy your well earned leave. Go back to your room and rest as well as you deserve, son. You will have tomorrow free of activities, so use your time as you see fit." He smiled at me, relaxing onto his seat.
"Do prepare yourself for the courting to come, dear." Father gave Mother a side glance, she smiled at him. "Remember that many eyes are set onto you now, so do an earnest effort to quell that timidity you used to display when addressing others."
"…I understand. I shall try to answer to your expectations as best as I am able. Good night, Father, Mother." I stood up and bowed to them. On their words, I rose and directed myself towards the door.
Slowly, I left the dining room. A vassal awaited for me, ready to guide me back to my private chambers. I followed absentmindedly, not focusing my gaze in a place in particular.
So… For one, Sister was most correct. I surely… did not expect Mother to be this… forward and adamant. I thought Sister was jesting about her being the most obstinate one.
I truly have no desire to marry as of now, however I couldn't find the strength to rebuke her stare. Even so, I cannot believe she made a list with such… preferences in mind. Carnal desires are different than pledging one's eternal companionship, so while I do admit my eyes might have wandered to certain curvaceous places at times and I have had moments of imaginary elation while thinking about some of my fellows, I do not know whether I am ready to make the choice, to be a proper partner for someone.
…There's also the matter of how clearly displeased they seem to be now towards Yohime-sama. I know not of our struggles so far, but I do not believe her to not value our companionship in the slightest. However, Mother and Father voiced their opposition to her choices, especially regarding how she treated me.
The same could be said for their worry towards Yuuhi-sama becoming our leader. They were not opposed to the idea of a woman becoming our leader, they were opposed to a young woman doing so. They didn't seem rejecting of the situation of the Tsukuyomi House, despite harboring a slight resentment towards them for taking our place as retainers of the Koubuins.
Perhaps… Considering they so vehemently refused Sister as the next Head… is another Regent House trying to sway some of our fellows to their side? It is true that since Jinkuro's betrayal we have suffered from a certain dry wind in some areas. Considering the betrayal… speaking against Yuuhi-sama will only bring us chaos. Then, what has compelled my parents to openly voice their disagreement, to risk impairing our relation with Yohime-sama?
Considering they are currently doubting her capabilities to perform as our leader… perhaps there is something going on behind the scenes, something that's souring our interactions with her. Yohime-sama was also rather cold with me when I asked about Takeru-kun's situation.
…I suppose I will learn of this soon enough. After all, many are the meetings we will share from now on.
Next Day. 8:41 AM.
(Dojo. Amato House.)
"Sei!"
I rise my blade, blocking Sister's strike. Bending my knees, I manage to not relent under the pressure. However, she quickly moves her sword and continues to attack. Despite having the whole dojo to ourselves, I cannot so easily escape from her grasp.
Once she chased after me, I quickly take a step forward and try to deliver a slash to her arms. She swiftly deflected it and followed with a downwards slash.
THWACK!
I could feel a lump forming on my head as the blow connected despite the gear's protection. As ruthless as ever, huh.
"I yield! You won this-"
"The word 'yield' has no place in our lexicon. Raise that blade!"
"Please, it's been two hours already. Surely we should-"
"On your guard!"
THWACK!
"Ough! Grr… I told you to stop!" I return the next slash, starting another lock.
"That's much better! A samurai never backs down from a challenge." I can see her smile widening as her eyes also do from behind the helmet of our armored kendo gear.
Primal and piercing are those eyes, contrasting with her refined, almost frail overall shape. From where she produces such strength is a mystery to me, our Jump Units are certainly most jealous of the sheer impulse and force that emanates from those thin arms. Using a slight moment of distraction as she smiled, I took a step back.
"Phew… You've been saying such for over two hours."
"Only because you stalwartly refuse to show me the improvements you gained in your time away. I desire no simple sparring today, face me with all your might!" She said and then also took a step back, taking the stance taught to us by Guren-sama.
"Sigh… I still am fatigued. I doubt I could grace you with a duel that would please you."
"That is not preventing you from retaliating as of now, however." I could see her pursed lips as she complained while changing her tone, that bitter as the mint she so much despises tone.
"…That is only because you continue to push me. I might have been given the day off, but this is-"
"Enough talk, have at you!"
Again barely able to react on time, I block her slash. Once more, we begin our dance in the quietness of the dojo.
…
"Haa… Haa… Phew." I remove my headgear, wiping the sweat from my forehead.
"See? You certainly improved your performance once you concentrated enough." She said as she also removed her headgear, smiling widely.
"…I would not call it concentration, it was more akin to desperation. Your skill has not waned in the slightest."
"Hmph, what did you expect from me?" Putting both hands on her waist she raises her chest, making the armored kendo gear bend to fit her figure. "The road never ends, I have not neglected my training. In any case, you have my gratitude. I haven't enjoyed such a pleasant duel in months now."
"Truly? Have you not been sparring with our cousins?"
"Pah! Sparring? They are barely an inconvenience."
"I thought the youngest one had joined the Guard, however? That would imply he has been recognized as a Mugen Kidou user, does it not?" He did make a point to reiterate how he now was a Guard many times yesterday, after all.
"While he did join the Guard, he did not pass the trial of Guren-sama's dojo during his stay on the mountain there. It is such a relief to know I now have a decent sparring partner once again."
"…You're planning to have us spar every morning in this way, aren't you?"
"Indeed. Is there a problem?"
"Well, I would like to enjoy my mornings in peace, for one." She folds her hands, stretching a humming at my words. "Coming to the dojo as soon as breakfast ends is, perhaps, too rash in my opinion." I say, caressing my hair as the usual spike formed itself again now that it was set free from the headgear.
"Hmm…" Sister slowly narrows her eyes at me. "I see, so you have been neglecting your training."
"Nonsense. I was made to spar with Takahisa-sama the most, due to me being the youngest member of the squadron. I do not mind sparring with you, however, could we perhaps move this to the evening?"
"…Fine, if it troubles you so much." She purses her lips, then sighs. "Well, we should be leaving. Let's get changed." I nod and we each make our way to the proper changing room.
It has been a long time, indeed. You truly are as aggressive as ever. Sighing as I rub my arms, I take off the gear and place it in the locker. Then, after moving my neck in circles and rubbing my head where she had hit me before, I enter the shower and allow the lukewarm caress to rinse away the stiffness in me.
Getting out of it and drying myself, I then change into my crimson dress now while putting my morning attire in the right place for it to be taken care of by our attendants.
Once I exited the room, I saw Sister was already awaiting in her formal crimson dress as well, her hair done in the usual fashion now. I will never know how she manages to make those spikes in such short notice. Leaving the premises of the dojo, we take the path decorated by flowers and a small pond back to the inside of the house.
"It truly is a nice day, isn't it?" I look up above, the clouds move as a breeze returns the compliment to me. I breathe in the air, enjoying the calming sounds of home. It is nicely warm for being summer. Peace… truly is a wonderful thing.
…If only all of us could have returned to enjoy this sunshine, Takahisa-sama.
"Indeed. So, do you have no meetings to attend today?" I exhale slowly, returning to my house before I tripped with the steps ahead, and with the inner sinkholes that still linger in me.
"No, there are some in the coming days, but I am completely free during today. Are you required in your duties as of now?"
"I left the orders delivered yesterday, so I should have very few matters to attend personally until the late afternoon." She said as she folded her arms, a small sigh escaping her lips.
"In that case, if it isn't much trouble, could I perhaps accompany you in your duties? We could then perhaps be able to talk at large."
"That is true. Well, I suppose there is no harm in you coming with me, if you so wish. In any case, it is a weight off my shoulders to have seen you are indeed faring well." She looks into my eyes, a small smile appearing. "I truly feared your will could have been scarred while in India, but it is a reassurance to have had that duel with you. It does seem as if you came out of these trials strengthened."
"…It is not that I wasn't ailed, but that I was given enough time to grieve on the way home. I now know how truly blessed I am, so while there is some conflict lingering in me I have a duty to perform to honor my comrades' sacrifice." Not only for their sake, but for mine own too. To properly be able to move on, to no longer reiterate my return to those days… I have to triumph, prove myself I can bring forth a positive change.
"I see." Sister then remains looking at me for a moment. "In any case, it is good to have you back home. Yesterday's delivery of your report to Father went well, I hope?" She asks just as we cross the wooden doors, entering the house and moving towards our rooms.
"Well… No discussion happened, so I will consider that as a success."
"Haha, that is indeed a successful outcome. So, I know you are under secrecy, but what can you tell me of this year? Is India's weather as hot as the rumors say?"
"No, it is even more relentlessly warm than what we heard. Sigh… Our mechanics had to always had a bottle at hand when doing our repairs due to the heat, and many times we had to perform a sudden maintenance thanks to that as well. It was also truly severe on the rest of the foreigner pilots, especially the silver haired ones. To think I used to complain about Japan's summers…" I smile wryly, remembering one of 1st Lt. Shirogane's jokes about the weather and how our mechanics played along with it.
"That is a burden I have nothing to compare to. And what of the other armies? I once overheard Father repining about their treatment towards our men just after the news of your survival arrived."
"Sigh… That is… a matter that has no summarized explanation." I look down, recalling all the infighting that we could have been prevented.
"…Perhaps we should discuss this in a more private location?"
"If you so wish. However, enough about me. How have you been faring as of late?"
We kept chatting as we made our way to Sister's ride and, after we both gathered our bearings and I insisted to Matsudaira-san to take the day off, we went to the garage and got in the limo that would take us to Sister's post.
However, as we talked on the way, I noticed we were not moving towards the Castle. Sister kept asking me about the duels Takahisa-sama made us perform against him, as well as what else I could tell her of my day to day life while she also told me of how she fared, what books she had read, and how utterly boring was to simply stand guard in the Castle. I do wonder who is guarding it as of now, since we were sent to India and the backup squad should still be there, but Sister isn't going to the Castle as of now.
Once the limo slowed down, we descended from it and I saw one of the many buildings where our offices lie in. The road to it's gate had grass on it's side and we had already passed the first gate, where a few security guards in our black dress were posted. The building itself was a not-so-tall white square. If one would look at it from afar it could perhaps pass as a hospital, due to how it's entrance looks. Two large, circular pillars reach the above structure on the way to the entrance, shielding it from the sun's assault. Marble blue ceramic tiles decorate the entrance, with white ones in a pattern forming the emblem of the Koubuin House. The entrance itself was a large glass door adorned by a silver frame, and behind it were more guards standing watch.
After we identified ourselves and Sister notified my presence as a guest, the glass door opened on it's own and we walked into the building, greeted by the caress of the A/C. The inside also has the same marble blue floor, and a rather vast lounge came into view. A few seats, some sort of reception, and a board was to my right, a map showing how to orientate oneself in the place. Saluting our fellows, Sister took the lead and we went our way to an elevator.
"If you're working in an office here, does that mean you were relieved of your post in the Osaka Guards?" I ask as she pressed a button and the machine started moving. She then recovers a slight smile when looking back, nodding as she caressed the hills in her hair.
"Indeed. While it came as quite a surprise, this arrangement has given me the opportunity I awaited to gain the recognition that I've been working for. As of now, I am another of the House's guardians while I also tend to some other matters here. However, arranging meetings and coordinating security checks and patrols is a much duller work than I had previously anticipated." Her brows lower as do her shoulders, her lips curving their edges downwards.
"You have been placed as a security leader, I suppose?"
"No, the position is merely a formality. There are other duties placed on my shoulders, such as delivering reports for Mother and Father to the Koubuin House from time to time, and representing the House when they are dealing with other matters. However, even so I am in charge of arranging the security protocol of the meetings our parents partake in, which are many. I am merely a figurehead in that position back home, since I only am involved for those meetings as an overseer, to make sure no traitors worm their way in our security, and nothing else. Regardless, it is much more pleasurable to work in my House than it is to simply stand idly by in the Castle." She regained a faint smile, folding her arms.
"I see. I assumed you had been placed as the leader of a project, considering how Father spoke of our importance yesterday."
"Oh, I have a project under my name, actually. It is what I am here to do. However…" Her brows again narrow, her violet eyes avoid mine.
"Is it something you are having difficulties with?"
"No, not in the slightest. This project is truly important, so there are many small teams involved in it and I would be the director of it, you could say. Therefore, as of now I delegate most tasks to my servants, who are the ones that do the on-hands work. So, while during the planning stage I was deeply involved in the day to day life on the floor, since it has been finished I took a more managerial role. And since then…"
She frowns, folds her arms even tighter, and as we keep walking her eyes begin to show signs of the same combustion that lurks within Father's eyes. A chime rings and the doors open, we leave the elevator towards the same white hallways, now with black tiles forming the floor. Sister then sighs, leaving her arms sink and dangle to her sides.
"The building of our first prototype has been mired by unforced errors, you see." And in her voice lies the same gale that resides in Mother's.
"…It must be something delicate, if you're so visibly upset about it." Sister always desired to be placed as the lead of an important project, to prove her worth to Father and Mother. So if her team is having so severe setbacks to make her this upset at the sole mention of it, I cannot imagine what complex project Father has bequeathed her with.
"I am not. As I said before, my servants are not yet up to skill, is all. I already left new directives on how to tackle our day to day endeavors, so that should greatly aid those Tozamas under me. In any case, I believe I mostly have to deal with some reports for the day until a meeting, so we will be free to talk to our leisure back in my office. So…" She smirks my way after we pass a locked door, Sister showing a guard her ID card as I did with my guest pass. "…Did Mother tell you of the list of candidates?"
"…Yes. I am still in shock about it all, to be honest."
"Hahaha! I reacted in the same way when she presented the first list to me. I wonder, do you have anyone in your sights already?"
"Of course not. I doubt Mother will allow me to remain idle, however."
"Well, that is also true… I wish you the best of luck in your following courting sessions." She smirks again, her hair swaying a bit into her shoulders. Then, she stopped smiling and her eyes returned to a somber expression. "So, could I ask if… they mentioned me during that talk?"
"Yes. Well, in regards to both your refusal to marry and… well, why they don't think you as the right choice to be the next Head."
"I see. Did they say anything about having me also engage in further courting sessions?"
"No, Mother repined about how obstinate you're being, but neither said anything about having plans for you as of now. Apparently, they want to make me be the focus of their engagement efforts for the moment."
"Pfft! Ahaha! Engagement efforts, you call it." Sister kept laughing, recovering a smile that puts the incoming sunshine from the windows to shame.
"But are they not that, in the end?"
"Indeed they are." However, her smile then slowly relaxed as once more she returned to a serious, calm expression when she looked my way. "I suppose, does that mean you… have no desire to marry immediately, perchance?"
"It is not that I do not wish to, it is merely the manner that makes me uncomfortable. I desire… the decision to be mine, after all."
"I see… Yes, I can certainly understand your predicament." She folded her arms and nodded. Does she… have someone special in her heart?
Then, I heard the sound of footsteps reverberating in short succession through the hallway. Looking back, I saw a female fellow in a white dress approaching us, her stride perhaps a bit too fast for our hallways. Sister stopped walking, her relaxed features turning stern and tense, her round cheeks sinking inwards as her mouth slowly became a small line.
"Salutations, Raiko-sama!" The woman said, standing in attention as stiff as a supporting cable.
On closer inspection, she clearly possesses more moons on her shoulders than us and yet her posture was but a cup overflowed to the brim with apprehension in the same manner I was when facing Sister on the dojo.
"Oh, and… Good morning, Masahide-sama!" I give her a small nod in return for her bow, she must be someone sent directly from our ranks for her to know who I am at first glance.
"…What is it? Has anything happened?" Sister, who didn't bother to return the salute for some odd reason, turned to face her Tozama fellow frontally, placing both hands behind her back and pushing her chest outwards while rising her chin, the inner side of her brows sinking slowly.
Like father, like daughter. Sometimes I wonder who do I resemble in this family, since everyone else have no qualms in showing their worsening mood openly. Even Grandfather used to do the same.
"I have a report with me, regarding our most recent testings." She removed a folder she had from under her arm and, bowing deeply and looking down, she raised her hands towards Sister, who took the envelope and started to read it's contents.
As she did, she rose a brow slowly. Her eyes once more started to combust, but in a more restrained manner. Not wide open nor tightly narrowed, now resembling Mother's gaze, they were almost closed but with the lower eyelids contracting and forming fissures in her nose. Sister took one deep breath as she closed her eyes, then rose her chin as she opened them once again and got closer to her fellow.
"Remind me, what had I said you should do if there ever was another failure on a part's testings?" Her voice calm but with the hidden, low rumbling of an engine lurking further in threatening to suddenly rush outwards. What in blazes has caused Sister to be this upset?
"Um… You told us to notify you of any-"
"I ordered you to notify me of any unforeseen setbacks." She spoke louder, making the white clothed woman twitch and further burrow her gaze under. "I believe I had already explained that for such simple matters you had to relay the reports to the proper team instead. We had a meeting on such procedures a few days ago, and there was a document written and delivered a few days back to everyone, if my memory isn't failing."
"…Yes, Ma'am. However, I thought that you would prefer to be the one to-"
"And what are you even worth for if I have to oversee everything?!"
Even I twitched when she further rose her voice with the violence of a wild, uncontrolled fire, hitting a wall with the folder and scattering it's contents onto the floor, breaking the composure of her fellow in the same way a scorched tree collapses into charcoal under the fire's assault. The woman shivered for a moment, leaving her mouth open as she gagged an answer. All she could do was bow in apology, a mound of ash pleading the gale to not shred it away.
What in… blazes is going on? Frowning as Father does, without hiding how adusted she is in image of Mother, she took a step closer to the white robbed fellow who took a step back and bowed deeply once more. I froze, unable to shut my mouth or produce sound. Sister does have a short temper, however, she never, ever, had released her anger in this fiendish earthquake form.
"What is the point of delegating tasks to you if I have to take care of every little detail in the end? Have you no shame, shirking your work in such manner?!"
"My apologies, Raiko-sama! I only was trying to-"
"Do not put excuses! I already relayed this order multiple times. If you cannot follow such a simple set of instructions, what can I even expect you to do for the project?"
"F-Forgive me, Ma'am. However, in light of the mechanism's importance, I thought it best to-"
"This isn't yet an issue, you have not yet tested whether this engine truly needs to be replaced with another model or if this unit in particular has a problem. We haven't even gotten to the point where we can start up a live test, thanks to all these miscommunication issues you all have." Her tone lowering but not receding on it's hostility, Sister shakes her head as she places a hand on her waist. "You should have reported this to the engineers so that they would then do the checks required, and then reported that in our afternoon meeting to all of us. What will telling me this achieve, when I'll send you back to the crew at the floor?"
The woman once more bowed, asking Sister for forgiveness. Looking at the white fellow, she then sent a hand to one of her spikes, softly caressing her hair.
"Sigh… No matter, did this malfunction occur this morning? I do not recall being informed of it on a meeting, and I received no mail from the night crew before coming here about this."
"…Um, it was…" The woman's face was losing color as fast as if she had turned around and seen a Soldier-Class up close. "It happened… on yesterday's late afternoon, Ma'am."
Sister's lips twitched, the frown reborn on her complexion. Once more, she inhaled sharply as she remained looking at her fellow.
"…And whatever caused this to go unattended last night? What were you doing until now on your post today?"
"…M-My apologies, Ma'am. It happened near the end of my shift and I couldn't finish detailing the report, and there are no other fellows placed in the night crew, there's only the inductees so I couldn't possibly leave something of such importance in their hands. Which is why I made an effort to write and deliver the papers to you today as fast as-"
"You useless fool!" Again, the folder hits the wall with rebounding sounds into the otherwise quiet hallway. Finally, the ashes were sent scattering away, the woman's eyes contorted in fear, frozen in place. "This issue should then have been addressed by the night crew yesterday, to have a report ready for today's morning so that our mechanic crew could deal with whatever issue lies with this engine during the afternoon. We may have lost a whole day, no, possibly two, due to your negligence. And anyways, how could it take so long to deliver a report? It is already past noon, for the Holy Emperor! Why did you not send me a mail this morning to inform me of the issue?!"
"F-Forgive me, Ma'am! I was merely-"
"You should have stayed in your post until you delivered that report yesterday. And yet, you took so much time to do anything about such an issue. It is your obligation to perform to your best while in service of our House, for you are our servant. You should know how important this project is for the Amato House!"
"…Sister, may I?" Taking but a single step forward, I bow to her as she gazed my way. She relaxes her posture for a moment, releasing some air and lowering her shoulders.
"What is it?"
"I believe that, perhaps, it would be for the better to not continue reprimanding your fellow in this way. You have made her aware of her mistake clearly enough. Time is of essence for this project, is it not?"
She closes her eyes, folding her arms and nodding. Loudly exhaling through her nose, just like Mother does, she then faced her fellow again.
"You are certainly right. Time is of essence. You, return to your post and have this report delivered to the Chief Engineer posthaste."
"Yes, Ma'am!"
"And also, do ensure this matter is resolved before dusk."
"Huh?! Um, Raiko-sama, ma'am, I do not believe we can find a solution to this problem before-"
"Would you have us lose two days or more due to your negligence? Should I file a report to you House for this issue?"
"N-No, please! This is mine own folly, my family has not-"
"Then, I suppose you already have your orders for the day, do you not?" I never expected Sister to speak in such a cold, harsh tone to one of us. The woman instantly nodded her head, bowing once again.
"…Yes, Raiko-sama. However, there are many other parts in line to be revised, and other trials are also on today's timetable, so-"
"I see. Then, tell the rest I shall be going to oversee their progress this evening."
"…Huh? You will… be coming to the floor in person?" The woman's complexion froze over as quickly as if Autumn did not exist in between our seasons. Even I could feel a chill on my person despite the warmness of summer that filtered from the windows.
"Indeed. Since it seems you Tozamas can't handle this meager work, I shall have to yet again return to oversee the progress of the project. I sincerely hope to be pleased this time."
"W-We shall redouble our efforts, Ma'am! I shall relay the news of your visit to all the teams."
"As it is expect you would. I am in a good mood today, so I won't file a reprimand against you for this miss. There won't be a next time, however." The white robbed woman nodded, now clearly quivering in place. "Sigh… That shall be all. I hope to not suffer any more unneeded interruptions for today. Remind everyone that they have to communicate among themselves, and only notify me when a setback has been confirmed. Do not undermine the engineers' authority and rely on their knowledge instead of raising alarms my way, I handpicked them for this project myself after all." She handed the woman the folder back and then turned around and began to walk again, leaving her fellow to pick up the papers from the floor.
I tried to offer my aid to the woman, who became petrified when I did and managed to pronounce some form of thanks while shaking her head as rigidly as if she were a TSF, then giving me a deep bow. Feeling a pincer on the back of my neck, I followed behind Sister, stealing a glance at the woman who hurriedly tried to rearm the report before storming off towards the stairs.
"…Sister?"
"Forgive me, I was not expecting these sniveling fools to yet again try to shirk their duty. Such uselessness… It is unacceptable." She again exhaled loudly through her nose as she folded her arms. "She almost soured our reunion."
"Why… Why did you react in such a way? This course of action is not what I'd expect from you."
"Sigh… As I said, they keep coming to me for every little problem. We have a hierarchy for a reason, and thanks to this failure in communication we are most tardy in the testing phase. During the planning stage nothing was too difficult, since I was present on the floor most of the time, but since the building and testings started, these fools continue to reiterate these errors time and again."
"However, I am sure your fellow didn't do so willingly, it was most obvious she was under severe duress when facing you. Some of your gestures were… too harsh in my opinion. There was no need to berate her so adustedly, much less to threaten her with sending a letter to her house." Sister then looked my way, narrowing her eyes.
"I am merely ascertaining my authority. This is why I made us employ agile methodologies in the first place, so, while I concede that I may have acted on emotion, the fault lies on her shoulders for not adapting to my orders." She folded her arms and rose her chin, furrowing her brows.
"What are agile methodologies? Is this that new protocol you sent them?"
"Indeed. While I do not favor the American's ways, I concede this approach has it's merits compared to our prior methods."
Sister then began to explain to me what this agile approach was, how she had to fight Father to assign a Scrum Master to one of her teams, and how it allowed them to quickly mend mistakes and errors on their planning stage.
"…If only they would actually obey me instead of just being obstinate. I told them time and again what they should do, so that I could then oversee the errors during a meeting with the rest of the staff after the reports were throughly analyzed, to consult with the experts I handpicked in the areas I am lacking. What good does it do for them to bring the reports to me, if all I can do is send them back to the engineers or programmers? Many were the times where I attended a meeting just to see them not bring a detailed report of what had happened, because they waited to show me the report of the problem first."
"…Is that not commonplace, however? Consulting the leader in case something has to be changed?"
"It is a waste of time and resources, that's what this is." Furrowing her brows, she looks away and sharply sways a hand in the air, as if she were dusting her clothes off. "It's a simple procedure, they find an error, they report it to the other teams in their office while doing further tests to see what exactly is causing it. Then, when we hold a meeting, all team leaders share their insight and progress, allowing us to more quickly mend errors or polish rough aspects we didn't pay mind to, while coordinating the next steps with all of us involved in the discussion."
She sighs, slowing down her pace. Then, after briefly shaking her head, she looks back at me, veil of blaze still in place in her eyes.
"It's the main reason why I'm holding so many meetings, and why I stepped back from the floor to allow the experts to work without the pressure of having me behind their backs. Many are the ones who, despite me telling them otherwise, still freeze up when in my presence." With good reason might I add, Sister. I doubt they would enjoy being the recipient of your glare when you're upset. "So, giving them authority over their sector, I expected them to be able to perform to the best of their abilities with this gesture of mine. And yet…" Again frowning, she folds her arms tightly under her bosom, almost clawing at her elbows.
"I suppose this must be taking it's toll on you. However, reacting in such a way will only make the atmosphere harder on them. By telling them you'll visit the floor, and if you do so in your current mood, they won't be able to tell if you're upset with some or with everyone."
"That's…" She closes her eyes as we take a turn, holding her chin. "No, if I reprimand a team in particular, the rest should have no reason to take offense personally."
"However, your words and gestures might still be filled with animosity, just like you are now to me."
"Huh? What are you saying? I am not upset at you."
"Yet, your tone is still adusted. If I didn't knew you, I would assume you are also upset with me. Your fellows don't know you well enough, Sister. I know not what kind of burdens lay on your shoulders, but you should not allow such emotions to cloud your actions."
"Do you truly believe… I should be more lenient with them?" She closed her eyes, folding her arms again.
"No, not more lenient, more patient. You yourself dislike Father's way of reprimanding us, why do you imitate him then?"
"…If I do not act in this way, I will not be respected. I thank you for your advice, but my servants need to start delivering."
…Servants, instead of fellows. I never paid it much mind… yet Sister rarely refers to the Tozamas as her comrades. Yet, I do not think this is all that has caused this outburst.
"…Is the source of this anger not coming from the project, perhaps?" She looked away, so I believe I hit the mark.
"Sigh… Let us talk about this in my office."
We begin to walk faster, quickly shaving the distance with the office in question. A black door with Sister's name on a plate and her rank in the Guard, in a crimson frame befitting of her station, she took out a key from her dress and opened it. Walking in after her, I saw two black leather sofas with a black table in between, shelves with books and folders to the left side. A large desk with a computer and some more folders was on the far end, where a large window was showering light into the place. To the right of the desk, a smaller table laid against the table with an expresso machine and some boxes, that are filled with food I suppose.
"Take a seat, I'll serve us some coffee."
"No, I should do it. This is your-"
"Because it's my office I have to do it. You're my guest, after all." She smiled and pushed my shoulders softly, making me sit on a sofa.
She goes to the small table and starts up the machine, then grabs a box and brings it to the table that was in front of me.
"It's not much, since I barely eat while I'm here, but serve yourself." In it, the usual small crackers laid in their varied and colorful packages. Sadly, Sister enjoys her food on the saltier side of the spectrum, so I could only eat a few even if there were more. "So, regarding that prior discussion…"
"Yes? Forgive me if it sounded as if I was criticizing you, I know this whole situation must be truly hard on you after finally being assigned to a project of your own."
"Don't apologize, I'm not upset at you. I do thank you for being honest, and for looking out for me. So, I assume Uncle also repined to you about my behavior as of late?"
"Indeed, our cousins also did. I know we never got along with them, but Uncle was always someone we consulted when in doubt." It was a surprise, to see you two arguing so openly. "There's… other things that are rather odd, as well. What has been happening in our house as of late, Sister?"
"Well… What are these odd matters you speak of?"
"First, this rather stagnant air between us and Yohime-sama."
"Did she offend you in any way during your visit?" Combusting again, she slightly lowered her chin inwards.
"Nothing of the sort, but this is what I speak of. Why do you assume the worst in mere seconds? What happened between our Houses to brew this hostility in all of you?"
"Well… Sigh…" She picks up a cracker and eats it, eyes closed. "I only overheard this from Father, but it seems we are being… displaced."
"Huh? Displaced? How so?"
"It seems there was something that Takahisa-sama wished to do, something after he returned from India. It is why he had been wanting to be more involved in the war efforts and gain further honors for the Koubuin House. I know not of what he was aiming to do, however Father was, and still seems to be, opposed to it, as the Tsukuyomi that went with you to India also was. However, Guren-sama decided to bow to his wishes, and it seems that… the remaining Tsukuyomi has also submitted to this desire or at least has no wish to oppose it anymore. And Yohime-sama wishes to see this desire of Takahisa-sama to fruition, as far as I understand. Coupled with the fact that Father harbors doubts regarding whether Yohime-sama is capable to lead us until Yuuhi-sama matures, our relations have become soured as of late."
"So that's why they are pushing us away from their inner circles. However, I believe this situation to be salvageable, for the moment. Father does not wish to remain in this opposition for long, does he?"
"Precisely, as much as he might disagree with whatever this desire is. Yohime-sama still bequeathed us the project I am leading as a gesture of goodwill, however, we have not been in contact as often as we used to. I myself was treated too coarsely during my deliveries of reports despite my station." She narrowed her brows, pursing her lips and ever so slightly ballooning a cheek. "Due to this, Yohime-sama has been relying more on the Tsukuyomi network than ours. It does not help that the Kisaragi are going through harsh times as of now."
"Hm? Did anything happen to them?"
"Oh, right. You did not know. The older Head of the Kisaragi House died a few months after you all left for India, so his son is now the current one." Sister then raises a brow, scratching an ear slowly. "However, well, the man is not a good negotiator as one would require for a Shinpan House."
"Ah, yes… I recall Kaori-sama usually repined about her father's fragile veneer during her visits." I do sympathize with him, being a quiet person among such fiery fighters is no easy ordeal.
"Indeed. Therefore, many are the projects that should have fallen onto our shoulders, but Yohime-sama has instead handed them to some Fudai families, in hopes of strengthening our bonds and bolstering our ranks of skilled individuals, by suggestion of both Daizaburou-sama and Kazora-sama. I do agree with the gesture, to an extent, however we Shinpans at her service should be consulted in such decisions. I do not understand why us of the Amato and Kisaragi families are being left outside of these discussions."
"However, we are not able to do everything. I see no wrong with relying on our Fudai fellows, truth be told. And I do recall some meetings where Father was present but no one from the Tsukuyomi family could attend. Each of our houses have different areas of expertise, I cannot place blames on Yohime-sama for calling for those with more knowledge in the subjects that she requires advice in." Sister then shakes her head.
"…That is not the issue here. The fact that she didn't call for a representative of our House to be present, for us to not even be notified of the meeting, is what has irked Father. As I said, we do not reproach the action but the way it was handled. You know how much Father loves to go on his monologues, not calling him to a meeting is the worst insult one can send his way."
"Yes, that is true… I suppose Yohime-sama was merely trying to avoid furthering the tension. Why have him there if his voice would end up being rebuked by the others? Perhaps, she thought that calling him to a private meeting to give him her full attention would mend this strange air, however, instead of calming the waters it backfired."
"Well, it seems like that could be the case. Father and me are given our due time when called to the Koubuin House, but since those occasions are scarcer than before, he seems to still be rather upset towards Yohime-sama. And that… is what made my interactions with him all the worse." She narrows her brows as the sound of the machine tells the coffee is ready. She stands up and I also do, despite her complains, each of us bringing our cup to the table.
"I suppose he has less patience towards everyone, and you said something you shouldn't have?" I asked as I sat down.
"No, that is not it. I have done an utmost effort to remain composed in these times. Father and Mother…" She quietly drank a sip and then let her cup rest atop a palm that laid on her lap, closing her eyes. "…simply wish me to marry soon. We are again arguing because of who they select for me, and I simply refuse to attend any more courting meetings with those who they choose, for I already know what awaits me there."
"Oh… I see, so that's what's happening." I drink, feeling the warm bitter taste for a moment before letting it run down my throat. "Considering what you said before… You also desire the decision to be yours, do you not?"
"Precisely, that's what irking them, which in turn then makes our interactions all the more strained. I suppose one could say that is what in turn is sowing such restlessness in me. Coming here to see so little progress is… disheartening at times, truth be told." She raises her cup again, putting one leg over the other.
"I see…" Perhaps it would be for the best to let this rest, I do not wish to worsen her mood. "In any case, I believe it'd do you good to not be so tense. Your fellows here are only doing their best, showing your fangs will only worsen the situation."
"I know that well… It is all so frustrating, however." She sighs, resting her face on a softly coiled fist. "Well, in any case, let me give you a simple roundup of what my daily routine is. I am convinced it will help me you much in preparing for your new duties."
"Thank you kindly, Sister. However, do you truly have the time? If you are required on the floor to discuss confidential matters, I can simply wait."
"Nonsense. I invited you, and as you said it will do me no good to return there in such a foul mood. How could I let an opportunity to spend more time with my brother and future lord simply pass me by?"
I lowered my cup slowly as did my eyelids, inhaling deep and leaving the air frozen in my lungs. Again, no hesitation. It is odd… Why would she simply accept me as the next heir?
"Ahem…" I looked up again, finding Sister holding her chin as she stared at me. "…Perhaps, is it that you do not desire my aid?" She furrowed her brows, I swayed a hand in the air.
"All the contrary, I am truly thankful. So, if you truly do not mind, I'll gladly accept your offer." She smiles, nodding my way.
"That is good to hear, indeed. Well, but before that… Why did you frown a moment ago?"
"I… I did?"
"Yes. Quite obviously, might I add. It is rare for you to show such gestures. What did I say that made you do so?" She remained staring at me, placing her cup onto the table.
"It is nothing, pay it no mind. So, regarding your-"
"Masahide…" Her brows slightly narrowed as she smiled. "Do you think you can fool me?"
"Eh? No, I had no such-"
"Tell me what is troubling you. You have listened to my woes, it is only fair for me to return the favor." She then lifted her cup and drank as I looked down, I suppose she must still be looking at me in wait.
"Well… It is but a small thing, truly."
"Then, what is it?"
I inhale slowly, going for my cup and finishing my coffee. Resting the cup atop the table, I relaxed onto the sofa as I looked back at her, a slight shiver crawling down my back.
"It is just… somehow shocking to hear you accept me as the next heir, without a hint of hesitation."
"Huh? Why would that be? You are the next heir, after all."
"Well, you also could become the next Head, right?"
"…That would be a foolhardy course of action. I have no need to become the Head."
"Why? I thought you desired to gain recognition for that goal."
"Well, the idea was in my head for some time, I do admit it, but upon pondering it throughly I saw that it was but a futile struggle. I benefit more with you as my lord, so I decided to support you instead." She nods, confidence radiating from her words as clearly as the coming dawn.
"…How so? I could order you around as Father does and you would be powerless to stop me. Isn't that what you despise the most?"
"But you will not push unreasonable orders onto me, will you? I know you well, I know I can place my trust in you, after all." Smiling my way, her words rained bullets onto my skin and placed more weights onto my shoulders. "You see, if I were to become the Head, many would be the ones who would oppose me merely for the fact that I am woman. However, if you become the Head and support my ideas, people will be less rejecting of them since you, a Head our fellows will respect, will be agreeing with me, and they'll see it as me serving you, and I could present that as me having a 'change' in attitude. I believe this is what benefits us both the most, as I also do not wish to fight with you for the succession." She continues smiling my way, folding her arms.
"…However, I believed you… well… I do see the merits of your idea, however I do not know if… I am worthy of such trust."
"Why do you say so? You already have seniority in the Royal Guard, you were sent overseas and returned, and furthermore, Father must also wish you to succeed him, does he not?"
"Yes, it was truly a surprise, truth be told. I… don't know if I can live up to their expectations." Or if I want to. If I become the Head, then they will surely oppose me looking for the affection I desire to find. Sister's attitude, while too confrontational at times, is what fits the position best in my opinion.
"…Masahide?" I raise my gaze towards hers, she had her brows curving as a hand played with her fringe. "I want you to know that I truly mean what I said."
"Huh?"
"I am being serious. I do support you to be the next Head of our family, regardless of what others say about you. Will you do the same for me once you're my lord? Will you remain attentive and listen to my words?"
"…If I do become the Head, then of course. I… You're important to me, I trust you much. However…"
"These… disagreements of late are plaguing your mind?" I nod, even if I can't tell her everything of what plagues me.
"I also… don't agree with your attitude towards our fellows. I know you are the lead, but I cannot see myself imposing my will with such ferocity, yet I know that stance is sometimes required for those who are in a position of power. So, while I do have my goals and ambitions, I do not know if… I can safeguard our fellows' future as I am now." I let my gaze sink, gulping down a large amount of air.
"I see… Then, allow me to clarify my words." She cleared her throat, shifting in her seat and placing a leg over the other. "One could say I meditated on Father's words and realized he was right. If I became the Head, many hardships would await us. Therefore, what is most beneficial to me, and the House as a whole, is having you become our next lord."
"Why me, in particular? Father was never too supportive of the notion, it truly came as a surprise when he affirmed it yesterday."
"Well, considering the current state of affairs of the Royal Guard, that pacifist stance you always display is what makes you such a good a match for the position, provided you learn to impose your orders properly. I do believe you to be the right choice, and I will be by your side to aid you if you ever find yourself struggling. Regardless, I want you to know my loyalty lies with you." She stops to stare into my eyes for a moment, letting me see her resolution in her complexion and unblinking eyes.
"No, there's no need for you to talk in such a way towards me. You're the oldest after-" I wave my hands around, but that doesn't prevent her from stopping me mid-sentence.
"Masahide, you should stop being this kind. If my words offended you, you have all the right to berate me."
"…Isn't that what makes you argue with Father? Why would you wish me to do that to you as well?"
"Because that is not the cause. Father never listens to me, that is why we always argue with each other." She slowly relaxed her posture, resting her hands on her lap. "So, if you support me… If you promise me you will not change the way you treat me after you become the Head… I will serve you as devotedly as I possibly can. While I perhaps have a stronger aura, you possess a much calmer manner of speech, and that will aid all of us greatly in these tense times. Have some faith in yourself, Masahide. You did return alive from the frontlines after all, that is something not many can claim in this Empire." She again folded her arms, smiling at me brightly. It is good to see her also having such faith in me. However…
"I simply… I know it would be for my own good, it's just…"
"Masahide, look at me." I did so, meeting her gaze. She then leaned forward, resting her chin onto a hand, whose elbow was resting onto one of her thighs. "You now possess some sort of goal, do you not?"
"Yes, I do."
"And you wish to impose your will upon your vassals to make it a reality, am I correct?"
"Well… Imposing might not be the right word…" I veered my gaze slightly, only to make her frown a bit.
"However, you desire to make your fellows listen to your words, obey your orders?"
"…Yes. Which is why I believe my usual way of being to be an obstacle for someone who is supposed to be a Head."
"Please, this is no obstacle. You are male, you have the blessing of our Father to become the next Head, you already were deployed and came back alive, you have everything you could possibly need to make yourself a respect member of our ranks. You can still remain steadfast in your resolve without resorting to being as frontal as I am, can you not?"
"That is true, however, there are other… restrictions placed on those who are to lead." I sink my gaze once more, letting a sigh out.
Neither said a word, I looked at the ground as left my mouth slightly open. I can muster no more words, I feel void inside despite how heavy and stiff my back is now.
"…You truly do not want to become the Head, do you?" I closed my eyes, giving a nod. "Sigh… I know you must be aware of it already, but our cousins-"
"Yes, they're not fond of us two, they will surely force us to marry someone of low standing, or send us to war again if either becomes the next Head. It's just… After coming back, I expected them to, I don't know, be at least willing to hear me out. I know that if I want to reach my goal, it is in my best interest to become the next Head… It's just… I don't know if I'm deserving of this, for you and the rest to place their faith in me."
I really do envy Takeru-kun in that regard. Despite the odds he faces, he so bravely steeled himself to follow through the adversity, just like his father did before him. I don't know if… I'll be able to meet the expectations of the rest, especially if I want to follow my own goals.
"Is this… related to the courting meetings as well, perchance?"
"…Yes."
"Do they… wish to marry you to someone you do not favor?"
"Not to anyone in particular, but they openly said they won't respect my decision. I don't have anyone in my sights, however, I would… like to have the freedom to choose who I marry."
"…So it's just like they were with me, huh."
"They also refused your chosen?"
"No, I also do not have anyone in particular, but they keep insisting on having me choose within their options, under their rules. This has a simple solution in your case, however," She smiled again, rising her chin and a finger upwards.
"What do you speak of?"
"Well, since you are to be our next lord, you can treat this decision as your very first order. Do not relent under their pressure and enforce your will over theirs. I am sure you have already been told of what is expected of your lady wife?"
"Yes, I have. So… You believe me capable of such a thing?"
"You are our next Head, so I am sure they will find no fault in you using the same power they always used. All the contrary, I believe they would be overjoyed to see you finally take your own fate by the reins." She then chuckled softly.
"Are you certain of it? They did say they would revise my decision despite their praises."
"That is proof enough that they only wish you to be more resolute, it all might be just one final test for you in their eyes." I am not so sure of it, especially considering how that discussion went and how… adamant Mother was during it. Sister then looked down, rustling her hands together. "So… if you do manage to perform this feat and become our Head… W-Would you… allow me to… well, look for a husband in my own terms?"
"But of course! I would never force you to marry someone you do not favor."
"Truly?!"
"Come on, Sister. Do I truly seem so cold to you? You should know that when I give word, I always follow through." I furrow my brows, she laughs as she waves a hand around.
"Forgive me, I was merely taken aback due to how quickly you answered. You have my gratitude, I shall do an utmost effort to support you from now on, milord." She then made a fist, clashed it to the opposite shoulder and bowed to me, making all air in me retire for a moment.
"I… Well… You shouldn't call me in that way, I'm still nothing."
"Come on, now. Where is all that assertiveness you had a moment ago?"
"Look, I just… You know I don't… have much experience leading. I only hope to be up to par, that's all. Even now, just thinking of going against Father and Mother is enough to send shivers down my spine as when we trained on that mountain." I avoid her gaze, wincing once more as I feel my mouth be filled with the acid air I feel since that day of April.
"You didn't used to be this hesitant, however. Did something happen before that mission back in India?" I nod, grimacing as I sigh. She winces and returns the nod. "Understood, forgive my insensitivity. You don't need to tell me now, but my ears are open whenever you need them. Now then…" She clasped her hands and smiled, pulling me back to reality. "Let us enjoy some small talk before we go to the floor. As an apology for my insensitivity towards you, let us simply relax for a spell. You did wish to discuss some matters with me, did you not?"
"…It never ceases to amaze me how quickly you can change your mood."
"Hm? I wasn't upset at you in the slightest, even if it might have sounded as if I was scolding you. There's many things I suppose you must be wishing to know about this year, and about my duties here as well."
"Well… I suppose…"
"You also will need a source of information once you become our lord, do you not?" She leaned onto the table, smiling again as her hand caressed a cheek of hers again. "I can bestow you that. I am also convinced you do need someone to watch your back, milord."
"I told you to stop calling me in that way. I'm… You said…"
"My apologies, I shall learn to mind my tongue."
"I… well… You don't have to be like this, Sister. I'm still me, after all." She remained staring at me for a moment, a finger on her chin.
"…Do you wish to attain victory, Masahide?"
"Of course I do. Did I not seem serious enough to you?"
"…Then, you need to gain allies and influence, am I right?"
"Indeed I do, however-"
"And I can aid you with that, once you find yourself in the right mindset to lead us." She smiled again, tapping the table with a finger then pointing it at me. "Do not be so tense, I am sure you will find the right answer to your woes in due time, and you will see I am merely looking out for you now."
"…And what happens if I don't?" Sister then lowered her brows for a second, then smiled again.
"You can work to empower our house as of now. Once you do, you will gain the knowledge you require to properly act on your goals. You do not have to fear what comes with such oppression." Again, she grasped her chin, smiling my way. "And I assure you there won't be many that will desire to clash with or upset you, considering the feats you performed on your mission abroad."
"I am not such an easy to anger person, however." I rose a brow, she smiled.
"We can always convince others of it through the use of rumors, and I am sure many will still rather remain polite to you. And if anyone ever dares to threaten you and you find it hard to retaliate from your position…" She smirked as the blazes returned to her eyes, lowering her inner brows as she leaned back onto her seat. "I can be your wrath, I can crush the fangs of anyone who dares to get in the way for you."
"Sigh… Why am I not surprised those words came from your lips?" I shake my head, caressing my spike as she giggled. "Then… If you're willing to go so far, if you truly believe in me to such lengths, I have a proposition to make."
"What is it, milord?"
"Uuh… Do you have to keep calling me that?" She nods, furrowing her brows. Sigh… "Ahem… Let us test whether my approach would truly work or if people will reject it."
"Hm? How so? What do you have in mind?"
"You can try to be more gentle and supportive towards the inductees under your service, for example."
"…And why would I do such a thing?"
"Because I am the one asking?" She scratches her ear, curving her brows for a moment.
"Could you explain your reasoning, please?" It feels as if someone had thrown sand to my face, that awful taste corroding my mouth, hearing you be this formal towards me.
"I wish to, well, foster unity within our ranks." I cross my arms, leaning forward. "I don't believe treating the inductees or those of Tozama rank so harshly will yield anything good for us. I know I have to take small steps, so starting from us leading by example would be the best first step, in my opinion. It would do good to cease all these tensions within us in service of Yohime-sama, so that we could all work together without resorting to raising our voices towards those of lower ranks."
Sister closes her eyes, grasping her chin as she hums in silence.
"I see, so you wish to gain the favor of the lower echelons first before clashing against the higher ones… A fine move, milord." She nods, smiling my way.
"You truly cannot refer to me as you always did?"
"Hehe, well, what choice do I have if you order me to do so?" I sigh, causing her to giggle again. "In any case, I suppose it would do me good to not be as quick to anger as usual. Fine, I shall do as you say. Let this be a show of how loyal I am to you. What exactly do you wish me to do, milord?"
"Nothing too complicated, simply be more supportive of them. I do recall the fellow we met on the hallway said a phrase that indicated she did not think much of the inductees either. They're also part of your team, let it show in your actions how much they mean for you, as you do now with me. And if those under you follow your example…"
"You will heed my advice, then?" I nod, she smiles. "Roger. I shall do as you say, milord." She then stood up in attention, giving me a salute.
"Um… Sister? You do not need to salute me, however?"
"Nonsense. You are, in my eyes, already my lord. Please, you need to get accustomed to receiving such shows of respect."
"I believed you did not want to submit to anyone?"
"That is different. You… You are someone who heeds my words and values my abilities, unlike Father or anyone else until now." She got closer and grabbed both of my hands, tenderly as if they were but a small animal, her smile flourishing intensely as a roaring engine, vibrantly joyful as I haven't seen her be. "Working for you, earning honors for our House will be my pleasure, I assure you."
"Is that so? Have you not been rewarded for your efforts so far?"
"They sent me to waste my time as a guard of the Castle." She furrowed her brows, releasing my hands and crossing them tightly. "And not even as a member of the main TSF squadron, either."
"I see…" That does explain why she was so adusted about the matter when we spoke of it on the way. "Well… Let's try to support each other from now on."
"Indeed! Well, let us rest for a moment. I am sure you must be wanting to know much of what has transpired in your absence. Allow me to make us some more coffee." She turned around, grabbed both cups and went to the machine, tapping my nose when I stood up and tried to help her.
I inhale, filling my lung slowly. I relax my shoulders and neck, exhaling the vile air that filled me a moment ago. Peace… She's on my side, I should have known better than to cast doubt on Sister.
I sit on the sofa again while she goes to the machine, letting my arms rest on my knees now that the heaviness left them. Despite the A/C, I still felt an odd sweat rolling down my back, making me shiver slightly.
I now know Sister supports me… However, will these meager efforts yield good results? What if all the rest refuse to change their ways? If I become the Head… and I have to keep bowing to others to be even respected… If I do not manage to make myself be respected…
"Hm? Are you feeling well?" She asks as she places my cup near me.
"Yes, it's nothing." She smiles my way as she sits down.
"Well then, is there anything you wish to inquire in particular?"
"Sigh… I don't truly know. I'm just drawing a blank."
"Would you like my aid in reviewing the candidates that sent letters to you?" She clapped, entwining her fingers, as she put one leg over the other and smirked my way.
"Wha… N-No! Gosh, why must you tease me in such a way? We were having a serious conversation, I am merely-"
"I understand." She placed a finger over her lips, smiling. "The time for my next meeting is coming, so let us just relax for a spell, yes? Do not burden your mind any further, it will only bring you harm. Trust me, I know that very well." She arched a brow as she went for her cup, drinking slowly.
"Sigh… You're right. Thanks, Sister." I smiled back at her, she nodded.
"No thanks are needed. So, by the by… Did you already see who was the one with the largest bosom within all the candidates, milord?"
"SISTER!" She giggled again, making me frown further as I went for my cup in hopes of hiding my blush.
"My apologies." I sighed, she remained smiling. "So, where should I begin? Is there anything you would be liking to learn first?"
"Well… About how you manage your fellows, for example. How is it to be leader?"
"Hmm… I suppose that you would need to learn of this soon, all things considered. First, you need to speak clearly and slowly, not faltering in your orders. It is of utmost importance to the morale of the team to have a firm head, who they know they can rely to guide them to success. Therefore, considering your usual manner of speech, there are a few examples of my first weeks of work here that would serve to clarify what I truly mean. First-"
