Hermione stood on the tip toes on the back of the white sofa. Her bare feet curled against the fabric. She had nearly gotten the last string of fairy lights hung when the sound of the front door opening caused her to spin. She felt her foot slipping before she started falling, pulling the string of lights with her.
"Hermione!" Remus yelled, dropping the stack of Christmas presents he'd been carrying. The decorated wrapped boxes tumbled to the floor. He stepped over them and managed to catch Hermione before she actually fell. She'd held onto the lights and now both she and Remus were tangled in the flickering little white lights. Hermione looked up at Remus' face.
"Sorry, I was trying to get the living room decorated before you got home," Hermione said, giving Remus a sheepish looking smile.
"Looks like you've decorated the both of us instead," he commented, setting Hermione down gently on the sofa she'd just fallen from.
"You know, all these little lights, they remind me the flickering candle flames on my sixteenth birthday cake," Hermione admitted. "That was the day that changed everything. That was the day I wished I could find someone that matched my heart, that matched my soul. I never thought it'd be you, I still thought of you as my teacher," she laughed, wrapping her arms around Remus' neck.
"That transition took some time for the both of us," he admitted, letting his wife pull him down onto the sofa with her. "You really made a birthday candle wish for me?"
"Yes, I thought, well, we were going to be at war and the thought of spending my life alone, not even really having a serious boyfriend, it was a silly kind of wish," she blushed. Remus kissed the tip of her nose.
"It wasn't, Hermione. I know when I turned sixteen, James, Sirius, and Peter threw me a party and I wished for someone to love too. I never expected to have to wait so long, but for you, Hermione, I would have waited an eternity," he whispered, kissing her on the lips. She happily returned the kiss, the fairy lights sparkling around them.
