Chapter Three

(Owen's POV)

That thing just ate our boat.

The entire boat.

I have never in my life thought I'd ever see a living creature that big.

But it was there. It was real. I wasn't dreaming.

And now we're going to have to find a new way to get off this island.

What did Eric say that thing was?

Megasaurus?

Yeah, we're going to die.

"We should get closer inland. The bigger dinosaurs like to stay near the coast." Eric tells me.

Yep, we're going to die.

"If I remember correctly, I think there might be a building not too far away." He says. "We may want to hole up there until it get lighter out and see if we can get some supplies."

Oh yeah.

All of our stuff is gone along with our boat. All of our supplies, my fishing gear.

I follow Eric through the woods. We're still soaking wet making it feel colder than it is outside. It's also insanely uncomfortable trekking with wet clothes. Eric looks undeterred despite being just as soaked as I am.

"Wait." Eric tells me suddenly, stopping in his tracks. "Did you hear that?"

Immediately my heart begins pounding. "Hear what?"

"Listen." Eric whispers.

I hold my breath and do my best to listen to whatever the hell Eric is talking about.

And then I hear it. A soft noise of a tree branch breaking.

I release the breath that I'm holding and peer at Eric.

"Any chance that could be your girlfriend?" I ask, hopeful.

"I don't think so." Eric tells me. "I think we actually might be being hunted."

"Hunted?" I say my voice rising a little. "Hunted by what?"

"I don't know." Eric responds. "And I don't want to find out. We're going to start running on the count of three. Whatever you do, don't look back."

"What?"

"Three…"

"Wait no, Eric-

"Two."

"Shit, shit, shit."

"One."

We begin sprinting at full speed in the direction we were already heading.

Man, I sure hope that building Eric mentioned is closed.

I hear something caw like a freaking bird from behind me followed by more caws.

I don't think they're birds though….

"I see it up ahead!" Eric shouts to me.

"Thank God!" I shout back.

Just when I also see the building, I hear whatever creatures are behind us gaining on us. These mofos are fast as shit.

My calves burn as a continue pushing myself forward as fast as my body can handle.

When we reach the building Eric slams the door open with me hot on his heals. Just when I'm through, he slams the door shut and locks it. I collapse to the ground and attempt to catch my breath.

Suddenly something slams into the door, hard. I'm back on my feet in an instant.

"We need to keep moving." Eric tells me. "We need to find a safe place before they find their way inside."

"What…are they?" I ask.

"Velociraptors." Eric tells me. "They're smart, quick, and hunt in groups."

Shit…

"Come on. We need to find a place quick."

I don't hesitate to follow. We head farther into the building. Around us are a bunch of offices and cubicles. We must've gone through the back entrance or something since this doesn't feel like it would be the main part of a laboratory.

We continue walking until we get to a door that leads out to what looks like the main part of the building. Eric peers out the small rectangular window of the door, probably to make sure none of those raptor things are out there. He then quietly turns the handle and we step out into the large room. At the center of the room there's a receptionist desk. An old phone lies on top of it a long with papers scattered about around it.

Eric walks up to the desk and stops just behind it. I can't see his face, but I watch as he places a hand on a rolling chair. For a moment he just stares at it. I feel like I'd be interrupting some moment he's currently having if I say anything so I stay quiet.

After a few moments he seems to snap out of it and he turns to look at me.

"There's a cafeteria in the other room along with a supply closet. We should grab some stuff and find something to carry it all since the mosasaurus cost us our backpacks."

Mosasaurus…that's what it was called.

"Sounds good to me, man." I respond.

Eric leads me into another room that has a bunch of tables and a kitchen. He doesn't hesitate to walk straight for the supply closet he'd previously mentioned. In front of it appears to be the skeletal remains of a dinosaur that had died there previously. Eric steps over it and starts grabbing stuff off of shelves.

"We need to be quick and quiet. Those velociraptors know we're in here, and they don't give up easily." Eric tells me.

Outstanding.

I definitely underestimated what Eric had gone through when he was stranded here. We've not even been here an entire hour and we've already almost been eaten twice.

I grab a sack from the ground that I notice and notice a dark stain beneath it.

It looks like blood.

Eric stops and stares at it when he notices.

"We were attacked here before." Eric tells me before turning back to continue grabbing supplies.

"Wait…this is your blood?" I ask him.

"No, not mine." He responds. "Amy's."

I look back at the dried stain. "Shit, man."

"Come on, we need to focus." Eric tells me.

I hold out the sack and Eric begins stuffing it with canned food and medical looking stuff. A few minutes later, the sack is full.

"We should lock ourselves in once of the offices. I noticed one didn't have any windows and the door looked strong enough. We can wait out in there for a few hours and possibly catch some sleep." Eric mentions to me.

"Yeah, sleep sounds nice about now." I say.

I swing the sack around so that I'm carrying it on my shoulders. Hopefully, we can find another backpack because I can already tell that this sack is going to be a pain to carry around. We leave the cafeteria and walk back towards the room where the offices were.

When we enter, Eric turns and locks the door behind him. He then leads me to the office he was talking about without any windows. I'm no sure how I feel about being in a room with only one exit but it's either in here, but if it's between this or somewhere else out there that's more exposed to those raptors, I'd choose this. The room is not very big but has a decent sized desk and a black leather couch off to the side.

Eric turns and locks us in. It takes a moment for my eyes to adjust to the sudden darkness but once they do, I set the sack onto the ground and begin stripping off my shoes and wet clothes. I leave my underwear on to avoid making it awkward and take a seat on the couch. I glance at Eric who's slowly scanning the room. He double-checks the door before he removes his own shirt and shoes. He then digs in the sack and pulls out some snacks and two bottles of water. He tosses me a bag of chips and a bottle of water and takes a seat beside me.

"Regret coming along yet?" he asks me.

"Not going to lie, this place is insane." I tell him. "We've almost died…twice!"

"It won't be the last." He tells me, opening his own water bottle and taking a swig.

"You really survived eight weeks here?" I asked him.

"Yeah."

"How'd you do it?" I ask him.

"I had Amy." He responds.

I fall silent. Eric survived eight weeks on this island with Amy. That alone is very impressive. But somehow Amy has survived on this island for three years without anyone. I can't imagine what that would do to a person. Amy may be alive, but I doubt the Amy that was here with Eric is the same Amy that has been here for three years alone.

I stay quiet and eat my own bag or chips and drink the bottle of water. I knew coming into this that there was a chance we might die. Despite coming here while knowing this, I most definitely underestimated this place.

"I'll take first watch." Eric says standing. "You should catch a few hours of sleep. You're going to need it. I'll wake you in a few hours and we'll switch."

"Alright."

I lie down on the couch and stare up at the ceiling. Surprisingly, I find myself dozing off immediately despite all of the crazy stuff that's happened. It isn't long before I'm completely out.

I feel Eric shaking what feels like only a few minutes later but when I open my eyes and see sunlight pouring in from underneath the door, I know I've been out for a few hours. I stand up from the couch and stretch before turning to Eric.

"How long do you want me to let you sleep?" I ask him.

"An hour should be fine." Eric responds. "Better to move when there's still daylight."

I walk over to the desk and take a seat in the chair that sits behind it.

"Do you think it's safe to go take a shit?" I ask.

"Yeah, it should be fine." Eric responds. "I haven't heard anything and I went shortly before waking you up. The bathroom is on the other side of the cubicles."

"Thanks, man." I tell him. I unlock and open the door, causing light to pour in. I squint and hold up my arm to try to block out the sudden light. I step out and quietly shut the door behind me. I then tip toe around the office cubicles. I see the universal sign for bathroom and step inside. I close the door behind me, plunging me in darkness once more.

Once my eyes adjust, I see the bathroom contains a few urinals and stalls. I head for one of the stalls and close and lock the stall door. Then, I'm on that toilet for that sweet relief.

However, I'm starting to learn that sweet relief on Isla Sorna is short-lived.

From outside the bathroom door, I hear a sound that definitely isn't human.

As quietly as I can, I pull up my shorts and wonder what the hell I'm supposed to do in this kind of situation. Should I sneak to the bathroom door to see if there's a lock, or stay in the stall and hope that whatever is out there won't come in here.

Just as I'm about to make the decision to check for a lock, something pushes against the bathroom door. It swings open just slightly but not completely. I hold my breath and quietly step up onto the toilet seat so that my feet couldn't be seen from underneath the stall.

The thing outside the door pushes again, this time swinging the door open wider.

And then I hear it take a step inside.

Shit, shit, shit.

The door shuts behind it, plunging us into darkness.

For several moments, all I can hear is its breathing.

Then I hear it begin to walk towards the stalls.

Do dinosaurs have night vision?

I hear it stop close to my stall. Not sure where but it sounded close.

I don't dare move or make a sound.

I am so screwed.

I jump when I hear the door push open again.

And for a brief moment…

I'm able to see an eye peering at me through the crack in the stall.

I let out a scream and push myself back against the wall.

The dinosaur pushes against the stall door. When it doesn't open, it pushes harder, causing the stall to creak and groan.

Suddenly, I hear a cawing noise that sounds similar to the ones we hear earlier.

The dinosaur stops pushing and makes its own loud caw in response.

Another caw sounds from outside and the dinosaur retreats. The door opens and shuts, leaving me once again in darkness.

But at least this time, there are no dinosaurs.

I let out a shaky breath.

But like I said before.

Sweet relief is short-lived on Isla Sorna.

The door swings open but it doesn't shut, allowing light to poor in.

Once again, I hear something walking towards my stall.

To my horror, the thing plants a solid kick and the door crashes against the stall wall.

And then I find myself face to face with a shotgun.

"Who the hell are you?"
