A/N: Hello dear readers, I come bearing another chapter release, though I do want to apologize for the extensive delay again. Between my birthday that was two weeks ago, the company I had over for it, and Thanksgiving, I had been ungodly busy. Not to mention, I have been experiencing some health issues again that also hindered my writing. Granted, I have been trying to get back onto my old release schedule, but I haven't managed to keep that as a fixed point yet. Hopefully, I will eventually.

Aside from that, this release is one I am sure a lot of you have been waiting for. :) Some information about my OC creatures has finally been revealed, plus Kurapika does something that he should have some time ago. While this isn't quite an action-packed chapter, there is still a lot going on. It should make up for the fact this release was so late. :)

On another note, this chapter is also, like the previous one, is currently unbeta'd. I really wanted to get this posted before November was out as I haven't gone through any given month without at least one chapter release. Since my beta has been going through a lot on her end, there is a possibility that I may be releasing chapters unbeta'd, and loading a revised copy later until things change. For now, immediate releases may contain errors that I missed in my initial run-through that otherwise would have been caught by my beta. When this changes, I will make an announcement. For now, this chapter has been released in its partially raw format

Edit: 12/15/20. A revised copy has been posted! Thanks to SweetsDreamer, that despite everything she is going through on her end, she managed to finish going over this. ❤️❤️❤️

Summary: Kurapika and Chrollo begin their trek towards the city of Gaspen where their next target is with their new companion in tow. Along the way, they finally learn exactly who the creatures are that have caused so much destruction and despair.

Night had settled, its shadowy touch casting a veil over the area as a dismal silence hung in the air, although the symphony of crickets that followed made it seem oddly pleasant. Stars dotted the sky, their beauty and grace twinkling like a beacon in the darkness as each one appeared to shine brighter than anything else on the blue-tinted canvas.

Even the moon seemed to pale in comparison, though its gossamer, opalescent light still held a majesty all its own. The glow spread down to the earth below and gave an unearthly look to the young man who sat bathed within its pearly hue, his blond locks luminous and seeming like a halo spread about his head. Blue eyes, vibrant and full of life, sparkled with unfettered tenacity, though a hint of pensiveness was behind them.

For the longest, Kurapika was left to his own thoughts as those near him had since fallen silent. The weight of what transpired only hours ago weighed heavily in his mind, yet, Kurapika tried to maintain a semblance of complacency. It was difficult, almost impossible, primarily because of the trauma it had put him through. The wounds on his cheek still burned, his shoulder ached, patches of dried blood accented the dressings that covered them. Ignoring the pangs he felt was hard, mostly when he moved, but he tried to suppress the pain anyway. Forgetting he had them, however, was something that wouldn't happen.

When he closed his eyes, all he saw was her. Kurapika tried his best to keep the terrible memories from pervading his dreams, though it was practically irreparable.

And he hated it.

The flickering of the fire had drawn his attention, and for some time, Kurapika just stared into the flames as they danced about while licking at the wood that kept it alive. Yet, sometimes the images of faces would form among them, which brought him back to the instance with Katarina and his confrontation with her. Seeing her again as she attacked him with that dagger, its tip thirsty for his blood, and ready to pierce his heart, then her body on the floor amid a pool of red continued to haunt him.

Each event replayed over and over in his mind, and Kurapika struggled with just maintaining his sanity. A few times, he just wanted to break down and cry.

It was cold out, and the fire did little to ease his discomfort, even though he was near it for warmth. Chrollo sat across the campsite from him, busy reading a book while drinking some of the cheap, instant coffee he found among their belongings, and every so often, he would cast worried glances in his direction. The older man had given him some space at his behest so he could take the time to think, but the idea of being surrounded in Chrollo's protective embrace made Kurapika wish that his lover was beside him instead.

Perhaps after he decided to get some sleep, Chrollo would come to lay with him so that he could rest while wrapped up within those loving arms.

Kurapika turned away from Chrollo to gaze back into the fire again. Its flickering glow drew on his focus as the crackling sound of embers made the night seem a little more lonely. While he was still conflicted with breaking down and just letting his lover help ease some of the strain, one of the last things Kurapika wanted to do was burden him further. At times he felt more like a weight than not and had often wondered if he was only holding Chrollo back.

There was no denying that he was brazen, reckless, and way too quick to react. What happened back at the village was a prime example of that. Kurapika gripped tighter onto the stick that he had been holding and idly poked at the base of the fire. If he hadn't been so intent on making irrational decisions and had just stuck to the plan, they could have easily avoided the outcome. But he didn't, and it had ultimately cost them more grief than it was worth. Kurapika clicked his tongue and inwardly chided himself for acting so asinine. His actions were inexcusable, and now they had to contend with the aftermath.

One of the burning logs fell to the side, causing a plume of ash to float into the air, and Kurapika withdrew the stick to keep it from catching the blaze. He watched as it flared then simmered, the flames soon returning to their usual dance, but Kurapika felt no less at ease than he was before sitting at the fire pit. Every part of him still reeled from their recent encounter as coming to terms with it was no easy task.

A few moments later, Kurapika cast the stick aside and stifled a yawn. Sitting there while feeling sorry for himself wasn't doing him any good and only made matters worse. The more he dwelled on it, the more it made him brood. By doing so, it was only adding to the problem.

What he needed was a decent meal, then a warm shower, and a soft bed with Chrollo beside him.

Kurapika sighed and resigned to try and get some sleep, but stopped before he could even stand. Immediately blue eyes locked on red. Amar watched him intently as the young creature was only a few scant centimeters away. For a brief second, they remained there watching each other in silence, though Amar harbored a look of concern. Then he sat down on his haunches next to the log, the pale horn curving up from his head appearing to shine beneath the dim light.

"It looks like you could use some company," Amar commented before tilting his head slightly. It was evident the blond man was stressed, which he noticed had been going on ever since they escaped the village of Fallyne. Although he didn't know his new companions very well, witnessing Kurapika struggle against his emotions was disconcerting.

The way Kurapika's attention landed on him left Amar taken aback. He knew the young man was still at odds with trusting him, but the expression on Kurapika's face wasn't one of scrutiny. Dark rings accented his lucent blue eyes, and there was a partially sallow look to his skin, which Amar hadn't even noticed until the light of the fire accented his face. It was evident that Kurapika hadn't got much rest as of late, but he didn't appear very healthy as well.

Of course, that made Amar wonder if Chrollo was also aware of his condition. He was Kurapika's mate, so he had to know.

Or did he?

"I didn't realize that I needed any," Kurapika commented, but a bit more surly than intended. He turned away from the small, ebony creature and faced the dancing flames once more, their beauty holding his attention. "You don't have to worry about me." The crackling of the fire diminished Kurapika's voice, making it sound slightly ominous.

Silence came between them after his response, to which Kurapika was somewhat grateful for, but on the other hand, he could tell that Amar was merely trying to help. They all had been through a lot, so he wasn't alone when it came to distressing situations. Only, his experience had induced an outcome that turned out to be more inimical than what Amar or Chrollo went through. And yet, that same outcome ended up affecting them all.

It was hard keeping that exact kind of mindset as his encounter with the deluded mystic persisted in tormenting him. Forgetting that was something Kurapika knew he wouldn't be able to do any time soon, but then again, he hadn't been able to erase the memories from any of their past experiences. Even the instances with Debron Cloch and the cult continued to plague him.

The churlish tone to Kurapika's voice was noticeable, but it didn't make Amar flinch. It was evident that he was attempting to deal with the emotional baggage on his own. Amar stood his ground even though Kurapika was openly brooding and laid a paw on the blond man's knee. "You don't have to do this alone," he responded while keeping his voice from reverberating too loudly in his companion's mind, "we are here to help." Once again, Kurapika's eyes landed on him, and Amar tried to be as comforting as possible. There was no denying that he was still in a fragile state.

At least Kurapika hadn't attempted to remove his paw or even force him to leave. That was one concern he had sitting in the back of his mind. The man's stare was measuring, even critical, but underneath it all, there was a flicker of desperation that seemed to cry out for help. Kurapika was definitely in pain. Amar knew it deep down in his heart.

It was no different from any of the pain that he had experienced for much of his life. That was a commonality they both had.

His pale lips turned slightly downward, but Kurapika didn't move otherwise. Amar's indefatigability wasn't surprising as the creature wanted to prove his worth and loyalty, though such a task was rather difficult. Kurapika sighed quietly, his eyes now closed. "You don't have to be concerned for me. I will manage as I always have," Kurapika said after a few moments, his voice softer than it had been prior. "However, I do appreciate it nonetheless."

What he was dealing with, although cumbersome, was an aspect that Kurapika prepared to contend with, regardless of circumstance. The support was nice, and he appreciated every part of it, but involving others in his problems - as he had in the past - only had negative consequences. Repudiating the offer for help was difficult, yet Kurapika wasn't interested in dragging anyone else down with him.

"Do you feel the same way about Chrollo?" A voice abruptly questioned, and Kurapika stopped. Was it true?

"You're not alone as the path you now walk is traveled with others."

"Place your faith in them, Kurapika. It is because they care that you have them by your side."

"Let them lift you while holding your head up high. Stay strong. Persevere."

"And don't forget about your other friends as well. They still support you, even if they are not physically there."

The thought immediately slammed into him, and Kurapika nearly jolted upright from the startling revelation. It had been so long since he last spoke to his friends that guilt pooled heatedly in the pit of his stomach. He had gotten so caught up in searching for the Scarlet Eyes that his motivation to stay in contact with Gon and the others had been gradually slipping. There were so many times where he had promised to change that, and it just seemed to get worse.

Even his recent junket left him with little to no thought of following through. And then he planned on making the only two people currently with him feel the same way? Especially Chrollo, the very man he loved?

Kurapika sighed again. Perhaps he still didn't fully trust Amar, but the ebony creature wasn't wrong.

Red met blue once more. "You know," Amar began, his voice soft, "I used to be the same way. For the longest, I had always thought that I was alone and that no one else cared for me. It was a mindset I continued to harbor even after I broke away from kin and settled on forsaking their ways. The kindly old human who found me shortly afterward was no different as I had trusted no one, and yet, he had changed all that." There was a lapse in his speech as the nostalgia of that time came flooding back. Even the man's kindly face had flashed through his mind, leaving Amar with a remembrance that was nothing short of pleasant despite all that happened. His life had, too, been rough, but he did manage to pull through. He was sure that Kurapika could do the same. The young man just needed support. "It can be the same for you. Just let me help."

There was another pause, and Amar carefully observed Kurapika. He half expected the blond to refute him immediately, but a look of contemplation crossed his features instead. Maybe he was giving it some thought, which left Amar relatively confident. If anything, Kurapika would see his compassion as worthy, and it would help prove his loyalty and trust. Regardless if both men weren't entirely sure of his objective, it didn't stop him from wanting to change that. Protecting both of them and making up for his kind's transgressions was his ultimate goal.

And even then, Chrollo and Kurapika were all he had. With no home to return to and the fact that his kin had proscribed him, it was the only option. But not just that, Amar felt safe with them. Ever since he found both men, there was a sort of connection between them, like a kinship, which he felt almost instantly. Because of that, and the way his species chose to live had impacted his drive even further.

Using silent conveyance was just another way of trying to instill that change.

It gave Amar faith.

"I don't doubt that you have seen your fair share of horrors considering the type of creature that your kind truly is," Kurapika spoke after some time, though his attention had turned back to the fire. Its red hue reflected off his blue eyes, making them look ethereal, "but that doesn't make us entirely equal." Admitting to his past traumas had been hard, but comparing that to another was practically inconceivable. What he had suffered and endured - even after the massacre - was beyond measure. Other than Chrollo, what did this creature hope to understand? Kurapika realized his tone had been rather harsh, and he expelled a sharp breath. "How can you even begin to fathom the depth of everything that I have been through? What are you trying to gain from it?"

Opening up was an aspect that Kurapika had carefully guarded himself against, and with good reason. His heart had long since been closed to those around him, primarily after losing his family. Becoming attached to anyone worried him as Kurapika didn't venture to drag anyone down his thorn-laden path.

Such a notion was inexpressible. Then Gon, Killua, and Leorio came along and instigated change. It was their camaraderie that was the catalyst for beginning to melt the ice surrounding his heart, whereas Chrollo destroyed it entirely.

Yet, coming to trust another so easily frightened him, especially one he barely knew. Kurapika was aware that Amar wanted to help and that he was trying to prove his allegiance in the process, but it didn't make the notion any easier.

Though he must have realized that fact as the young creature still seemed up for the challenge.

Disappointment crossed Amar's visage, and his ears laid back slightly. It wasn't that Kurapika's stridulous words had offset him, but the lack of value that his companion placed in his ability to comprehend. Naturally, there was no way of completely knowing what the younger man had gone through - despite his educated guess - but it wasn't to say that either of them didn't have similarities.

One of the many things he wanted to tell them - mainly Kurapika - was about himself and his kind. Amar had a duty to uphold, but also a desire to improve his situation with both men. They also had a right to be made aware of the information which he possessed. After what his new companions had endured, it was only right.

Amar turned his attention to the fire as well, his empty red eyes closely observing the dancing flames. "Perhaps it doesn't." He responded softly. "But the atrocities I have seen far outweigh any inability to understand. Where I come from and how my kind there chose to live is vastly different than anything you have currently seen. So, I can safely say that I have a reasonably good idea of the pain and hardship you've suffered." This time, Amar faced Kurapika again, his expression purely genuine. "You may not agree, but I understand more than you think." He concluded, and immediately Kurapika fixated on him.

"Then help me to understand." He commented, curiosity in his voice.

Silence fell between them right after, and Amar figured it was finally time to reveal his knowledge to them.

It was the least that he could do.

"Alright," Amar began, though he was vaguely aware that Chrollo had joined them until the dark-haired man had taken a seat beside Kurapika. He instantly noticed the arm that Chrollo slid around the young man's waist. They indeed were the epitome of a perfectly mated pair. "What I am about to tell you may be unsettling, but it is everything I know about my brethren and the world that we originate." He breathed in as both sets of eyes, blue and gray, watched him keenly. Amar entrusted that what he was doing would help put the demons to rest that afflicted him.

Both men nodded, and Kurapika leaned forward slightly. His expression was one of utter interest. "You may proceed. As I remember, you promised back when we met you to divulge the information you had on your species. I definitely would like to hear it." He replied firmly.

"I am intrigued as well," Chrollo stated afterward. "Anything you can tell us about them would be extremely valuable. Whatever they are, if the information you have will give us some kind of advantage, then it is worth sharing."

Witnessing the beasts' raw power had been enough for them to seek whatever material they could garner on them. If it gave any insight, then it was crucial.

Breathing in made Amar's chest feel tight, but he maintained composure nonetheless. "Well, to start, I am from a vast group of creatures known widely as devil foxes, or Nacknars. We are born of the night and live by its code, each of us harboring one single purpose; to destroy and conquer. Pups are taught from birth to fight and become ruthless killing machines, and their only goal is to join the collective in finding new races to subjugate." He stopped momentarily and carefully measured both men's reactions. They seemed unfazed so far, but there was an intensity to their demeanors. Amar felt a wave of nervousness wash through him, but he continued without hesitation. "Within our society is a hierarchy as each Nacknar has a position from scout, all the way to soldier. Above that sits our queen and her generals."

A round of hums and grunts practically followed his words, and Amar took the interruption to regain some focus. He could see there a variety of emotions flowing from both men from astonishment, to disbelief. Kurapika appeared critical, whereas Chrollo looked contemplative.

Either way, Amar was certain they still wanted to hear more.

"So, what you're saying is that each Nacknar has their own free will although a queen controls them?" Chrollo still had a hard time believing such a concept, as from what little he knew, the creatures seemed to have a collective mindset. Hearing they were able to retain any sort of individualism was fascinating.

"Yes," Amar responded, his voice continuing to echo softly in their minds. "Regardless that we follow the direction of the queen, each of us still can make our own decisions. While the hive mind indicates our next motive, how we approach it is solely up to each one. That isn't to say my kin won't follow their most basic instincts. In the end, we got taught only two simple things; to destroy and assimilate."

Silence briefly overtook the area as Chrollo and Kurapika instantly exchanged glances. Everything Amar had told them about the Nacknars was terrifying, albeit their prior encounters, and Kurapika found it difficult to suppress the memories of them once again. Whatever they were, the Nacknars weren't from any place that he was familiar with, so it was tough to pinpoint precisely where they originated. With Amar's help, he and Chrollo planned to uncover the whole truth. Considering how dangerous the beasts were, the more they knew, the better.

Kurapika felt his lover's arm tighten around him after he had slightly tensed, and from the corner of his eye, he could see there was concern written on Chrollo's features. Usually, the older man tended to hide his emotions, but such wasn't the case now. "Given the information that you have already revealed," he began, and Kurapika was able to discern there was a touch of stiffness in Amar's posture, "is there anything else that you can tell us? Like where you're from exactly?"

It was the one question that had been on his mind ever since their first encounter with the creatures back in Mirie. Now that someone with knowledge of them was in their presence, Kurapika hoped to get the answers he sought. He was sure it was the same for Chrollo as well.

The tension in Amar's body grew slightly more intense, and he drew in a breath. Letting them know his kin's place of origin was the final piece of the puzzle, but he wasn't entirely sure how well both men would handle the information.

Everything he told them was distressing, but the last piece he was about to disclose might be overwhelming. Amar prepared for the reaction nonetheless. "We aren't from this world." He responded with finality.

Perplexion had immediately managed to work its way over both Chrollo and Kurapika, though the younger man's eyes widened to the size of saucers. The thought of entities that were not of their world was astounding and seemed impossible. "You're what?" He stammered, clearly shaken.

If it wasn't for Chrollo's arm around his waist, Kurapika was sure that he would have fallen over.

Both men's reaction wasn't all that surprising as it was something that Amar had expected. The notion was probably too much to bear, and it left them nearly stricken. "Not from this world. You heard correctly." He repeated slowly. "My brethren and I do not originate from this planet. We come from another one in a different dimension, far away."

This time, it was Chrollo who looked utterly shocked. His grey eyes became filled with curiosity but also with a strange sense of excitement. It was the first he had ever heard of beings from outside their plane of existence, yet the technicalities of it were a mystery to him.

Something like that was more Shalnark's area of expertise, and Chrollo was sure that his blond-headed comrade would have been thrilled to know about it. Still, he wanted to find out more. Creatures that came from other worlds - although strange and seemingly unimaginable - were fascinating.

"If you're truly not of this world, then how did you and the others get here?"

The question was so abrupt that even Kurapika was astonished to hear it. Amar turned from the young blond man to face his mate and saw a desire for knowledge in Chrollo's expression.

His reaction didn't seem to faze the other man at all. "Our homeworld isn't accessible by conventional methods and is only reached by those who can transdimensional jump. It's an ability that my kind has, which allows them to move between worlds. Because of this, most places end up facing destruction from the lack of insight." Amar concluded, though what astonishment had gripped both men seemed to remain.

Processing such a notion had left Kurapika nearly stunned. He gripped onto Chrollo's leg for support, the quick reaction keeping him stable. At the same time, he sensed his lover tense, and that arm around him tightened more.

Just knowing those beasts possess a strange ability to infiltrate wherever they chose was frightening, and Kurapika wasn't sure if he could handle the reality of it. The thought made his head swim.

"So, these creatures can attack any place at any time without warning?" Kurapika truly felt as if he was going to be sick. Keeping the bile down was hard.

Even Chrollo was startled by the revelation. How anything could shift between realms baffled him. The knowledge of multiple worlds was a shocking discovery, but it was something that he still found hard to believe. "And not only that," he interjected as concern laced his every word, "but if what you're saying is true, then more could show up to launch another assault?"

The question brought a twist of disgust to Kurapika's face as that possibility left him feeling appalled. "You seriously think it could happen?" He blurted out, and the startled reaction made Chrollo instinctively draw his blond lover closer to him. Kurapika was grateful for the warmth the closeness gave.

Seeing how his statement had jarred his new companions, Amar didn't hesitate to offer reassurance. "Yes. But that isn't the problem here. After my platoon initially came to this world, we soon realized that none of us could jump back."

Chrollo raised an eyebrow at Amar's statement as he was fascinated by what the young creature said. "When you say that none of your comrades could jump back, I assume you mean they were unable to return home?" He asked with intrigue.

"That is correct," Amar vocalized. While it was a fact that he had no qualms with divulging, he still didn't quite understand it himself. Whatever was holding them back remained unclear. "Although we can move between worlds and dimensions at will, something has prevented us from leaving. We landed on some extensive, mostly barren area upon arriving and have not been able to jump back since." Again, he lapsed while trying to figure out exactly why he and the rest of his kind had become stranded, but no answer made itself known.

Not that he was attempting to leave, far from it. Preventing the rest of his species from doing so was one of his focuses. Amar knew that if any of them made it back, there would be no keeping this world a secret. If Queen Shadow were to learn of it, there was no telling what she would do, and that was regardless of whatever was keeping them from interdimensional traveling.

Making sure that never happened was a priority.

"Wait," Amar turned to face Kurapika when the blond-haired man spoke, "you mentioned dropping on an unknown land after your initial arrival. Do you have any idea where? And even then, how did you manage to get off it and to the mainland?"

Amar shook his head, still unsure. "I cannot say. We knew nothing of this place before coming here, so I have no clue where the area is located. All I know is that it is relatively massive, and many creatures, both fearsome and dangerous, inhabit it. That aspect wasn't a problem for us, however. But our progress became limited once we realized that none of us could teleport. It wasn't until a group of humans came to the area for an expedition that we managed to escape." He stopped briefly and coughed before continuing. "That is, some of us did." Amar corrected. "A few stayed behind with the intent to colonize there."

Both men appeared to be in disbelief by what he said, though Kurapika also seemed to hold intrigue as if the mention of it seemed familiar to him. Considering the humans who had come to the island had mentioned it was uncharted territory, the reaction didn't surprise him. Knowledge of its existence may have been something that Kurapika was aware of and would explain his behavior.

Still, it wasn't an aspect that concerned him. Not now, at least.

The expression quickly faded as it got replaced by concern. Kurapika certainly looked distressed. "Aside from the possibility that place is the one I've heard mention of, the fact a group of those creatures made it to the Mimbo continent by taking over a human ship is unsettling. It's disconcerting that more of them exist. Aside from you, of course." Kurapika added hurriedly.

Although he still had trust issues regarding Amar, he did his best not to group the young creature with the rest like him. So far, he proved to be different from the others.

"Now that you mention it," Chrollo interjected, "I believe there was news a while back about numerous different groups sent to chart an unexplored landmass that is supposedly on the opposite side of the world. I don't know much about it, but from my understanding, it's said to be-"

"The Dark Continent," Kurapika said before Chrollo could finish his sentence.

A somber quiet befell the campsite. Kurapika appeared rattled while Chrollo was analytical. A few times, Kurapika remembered hearing of a place that scientists speculated was inhabited by creatures, both strange and fierce, and were unlike any of those currently known to man. News of the numerous expeditions sent to reach it had made headlines, though only a few returned. If what Amar had said was also true about their arrival on the Mimbo continent, it would explain what happened to one of those groups that did not make it back.

It seemed the Nacknars were more cunning and intelligent than he initially anticipated them to be.

"The Dark Continent?" Amar questioned, intrigue filling his words. Such a strange, mundane name for a place with no information about it, but the title fit nonetheless. With the creatures that inhabited the land, it only made sense and was befitting. Still, he knew little to nothing about it.

From what Amar could tell, it was the same for Kurapika and Chrollo.

"Yes." The young man replied. His voice seemed to hint concern. "Not much is known about the Dark Continent other than many explorers tried to reach it, but only a few returned, and even less survived. Considering that, how a group of telepathic creatures made it off the continent and found their way here astonishes me."

The more Kurapika thought about it, the stranger it seemed. He remembered reading about the many attempts to reach an uncharted land that wasn't known to exist and where hardly any groups made it back. And out of all of them, only one person is currently known to still be alive. Now, looking at one of those creatures who managed to land there and inadvertently escape made such a notion even more pressing.

Was it possible that other intelligent life, aside from the Nacknars, could have managed to escape the Dark Continent as well? The idea was rather frightening.

"I see," Amar uttered, feeling somewhat awkward by the entire conversation. It was still tough knowing that his companions - primarily Kurapika - looked at him differently than he hoped. Amar didn't want to be viewed the same as those like him. There was no changing his visual appearance, but mentally, he was nothing like them. It was one reason why he became an outcast. "When the others saw there was no other life worth taking control of, and no way off the continent, they saw it as an opportunity when the humans eventually came. We knew intelligent life existed before making the jump, so it was surprising when they finally arrived. It didn't take long for those in my platoon to figure out how to navigate their ship." During the conversation, Amar could not meet Kurapika's eyes, but he managed to look at them afterward. "Every decision made during that time was not my own. I merely followed instructions. Not once did I care for how my kind chose to act, and only bid my time until I could break away."

Amar fell silent, and for the longest, both men just watched him. It was stressful, nonplusing, the apprehension he felt putting him on edge. It was hard not to wonder if they were scrutinizing him, which made it harder to contend with the situation. Amar could sense his hackles rise, and resisting the urge to bow was strong. Their gazes seemed almost weighing.

"I believe what you're saying," Chrollo spoke after so many tense moments, "and that you had no real involvement with your kin's ambitions."

Hearing Chrollo's voice immediately caused Amar to lift his head again and face them directly. He could see the understanding behind the man's stormy greys and felt his stomach begin to unknot. The reassurance helped to deliver him from the shackles that he wore.

"I agree as well," Kurapika intoned, and Amar's head snapped towards him. "As difficult it is to admit that, I can't find any real reason to fault you for what you have done." His expression implied that he was serious, but the softness behind those shocking blues foretold that he was honest. "To me, you were only doing what was necessary to survive. I am beginning to think that maybe you had nothing to do with anything your kind has done."

The affirmation instantly caused Amar to perk up even more. Was it possible that Kurapika was viewing him differently?

His ears lifted almost enthusiastically towards them. "Thank you," Amar commented, appreciation clear in his voice. "It makes me glad to know you don't view me as an enemy. That was the last thing I wanted. To be accepted is a joy, mainly after everything that has happened. However, I will continue to show that you can always depend on me while proving my worth and loyalty. It's the least I can do." With that, Amar bowed his head, posture submissive.

"There is no need for that," Kurapika responded, a faint smile accenting his lips. "Your words are enough, and I entrust that you will maintain your promise. What information you have provided will be most helpful, and we thank you for that."

Chrollo nodded in concession following Kurapika's words, and the continued affirmation helped ease Amar's concern. It seemed that his new companions were gradually coming to accept him.

"I support Kurapika in his statement as well; you have proven to be quite useful thus far, and everything that you have done speaks against any doubt we've had. I understand that your past and heritage makes it hard to accept, but your behavior has proven otherwise."

He raised the mug in his hand to take a sip while his focus remained on Amar. It was still odd having the young creature in their presence and hearing his voice inside their heads, yet, his outlook was gradually changing.

Optimism replaced the pessimism on Amar's features, and he tried to appear as delighted as possible. For a while, he worried that his origins and connection to the other Nacknars would cost him any chance of gaining both men's approval, but that concern was gone now. If anything, he would eventually gain their full trust.

In the meantime, Amar wanted to keep doing whatever possible to keep Chrollo and Kurapika believing in him.

"Thank you again," Amar replied, his voice wavering as he was beyond joyed, "You have no idea how much this means to me. Gaining your approval is important, particularly in this trying time. Because you both have been so kind to me, I swear that I won't let such a gift go to waste." He added while bowing deeply again.

Kurapika frowned at the formal way Amar was responding to them, but he reached over to lay his palm on the young Nacknar's head. "Again, there is no need. Raise your head, Amar." He immediately did so, and it made Kurapika pleased. "Regardless of how Chrollo or I feel, you haven't given us any reason to doubt you so far. Although it may be some time before I can trust you entirely, right now, we're glad to have you with us."

After the words left his mouth, Kurapika turned to gaze at Chrollo, and he nodded in concession. Amar fought against tearing up as his emotions tried to get the better of him, but he attempted to smile anyway. "I understand," Amar spoke, his confidence returning. "Nonetheless, you have my gratitude for being patient with me." He stopped, and for a moment, his attention shifted between them. "Nevertheless, I will do whatever I can to help. I owe you both that much." Without thinking, Amar bowed again, but he remembered what Kurapika said and quickly straightened again.

"Don't worry. We appreciate all the help you can give," Chrollo stated and drained the remaining coffee from his mug. "That said," he reached over to stroke one of his hands gently down Kurapika's back, "we should probably get some rest. Tomorrow we need to plan our next move and where our next destination is. I have already received information on the next closest pair of Scarlet Eyes from Shalnark."

It didn't take long for Kurapika's attention to shift from Chrollo's fingers caressing the length of his spine to the mention of their next mission. Even after what happened in Fallyne, he was eager to continue his search for the eyes. "You know, it never ceases to amaze me with just how efficient you tend to work," Kurapika commented, and for a split second, a smile graced his lips. It was of no wonder why he found his lover so intriguing. "But alright. I won't argue with you about getting some sleep." He then leaned slightly into Chrollo's stroking and sighed contentedly. The touch was mollifying.

The fact that Chrollo worked fast made Kurapika happy as he wanted to retrieve the rest of the eyes as quickly as possible. Once he finally took them back to Lusko and properly buried them, he would then be able to move on with his life. Kurapika looked forward to what the future held. There were so many opportunities to be had in a world that Chrollo wanted to share with him. Every time he thought about their potential life together made him all the more eager to experience it.

He just needed to complete his goal.

Kurapika reluctantly tore away from his pleasant thoughts to face Amar once more. The young Nacknar was watching them curiously, though he also appeared to be intrigued as well. A slight twinge of crimson suffused on his cheeks, and Kurapika attempted to turn his head away.

Chrollo chuckled at the vain attempt.

"Yes, love. I have always been proficient in getting any job done. It's effective and produces results. Completing our search for the Scarlet Eyes is no different. You know I want to see your goal completed." Before anything, Chrollo reached over to sweep Kurapika's bangs from his face, so he was able to see the younger man's eyes. They were as blue as ever with their never-ending allure. "In any regard, let us all get some rest. We have much to do in the morning."

Amar nodded just a fraction, and the horn on his forehead briefly caught the moonlight, which made it seem to glow. The image nearly made him look ethereal. "Alright. It's for the best anyway," Amar commented before casting a glance around the campsite. "I'll take first watch if you two want to sleep now?" His attention returned to them once he finished scanning their surroundings.

"Sounds good to me," Chrollo vocalized and wrapped his arm back around Kurapika's lithe body. "We need rest for the days ahead, and as we plan for what to do next." The idea of them snuggling while asleep made him intent on following through with the idea. Although what Amar had told them was disturbing, they couldn't let it disrupt their rest. It was evident the notion had shaken Kurapika, so he figured the closeness between them would at least offer some comfort.

Such was confirmed when his lover leaned automatically into his partial embrace.

"No worries, I get what you are saying. We must stay at peak performance to handle whatever may come during our excursion." Amar commented in agreeance, his head bobbing to accent the words. After everything they had all been through, there was no telling what could happen next. "I'll keep an eye on things for the next few hours." He added and turned to face the outer perimeter of the campsite. The shadows blanketing the forest around them had stretched almost into infinity, the darkness thick. Just looking at it was chilling. "Go ahead and sleep. You both need it. I should be fine."

He then got up, and Kurapika watched as the young Nacknar moved a few meters away. Afterward, he felt a tug at his left side. "Come lay with me," Chrollo stated calmly. Kurapika could tell it was more of a firm demand than a request. The older man must have known he was slightly on edge.

"It's not as if you would have given me a choice." He replied, and the grin that formed on Chrollo's lips made Kurapika expel a sharp breath. Not that he cared to be alone; having his lover's protective arms around him would let him sleep a little more peacefully. Kurapika rose and went to where Chrollo was swiftly but efficiently setting up their bedroll. For now, he would dismiss the problem regarding the possible Nacknar threat. If what Amar told them was accurate, none of the remaining Nacknars could reach any of the other mainlands so long as one else tried reaching the Dark Continent.

The last known attempt was a few months back, which turned out to be the exact one the Nacknars used to escape. If anything, no one else would venture to reach it any time soon, and with luck, the creatures would remain on the Dark Continent without further incident.

Hoping for that outcome was something Kurapika thought may be far fetched, but it wasn't precisely unfeasible, either.

Once Chrollo had finished setting up, Kurapika wordlessly lowered himself onto the partially soft, makeshift bed. Seconds later, he was getting pulled back against Chrollo's warm but firm chest. He breathed out again, but the end of it was more of a drawn-out sigh than anything. "It feels good when we are pressed together like this," Chrollo whispered in his ear, and Kurapika sighed again, but this time it was in contentment. He sensed the older man's breath over the shell of it before those teeth nipped gently at the skin, which caused him to shiver.

"Why am I not surprised to hear you say that?" Kurapika commented offhandedly, but Chrollo wasn't able to see the faint smile on his lips. It was evident that his lover was overly-indulgent.

There was a slight upturn to Chrollo's own lips, and he dipped forward to run his tongue along the length of Kurapika's ear. He only stopped after reaching the top. "That's because you know it's true." Chrollo then tugged intently at the area before pulling away. His mouth then moved to the younger man's neck as he wasted no time planting a few kisses to the back of it. "I also figured you could use the company, all considering."

Chrollo tightened his hold on Kurapika while ensuring they were no less than flush against one another and his legs tangled automatically with his lover's. Afterward, he reached behind himself to quickly tuck the wool blanket over them before moving his arm back to where it was. Thankfully, the object was decently soft.

The contact between them allowed for Chrollo to enjoy some form of intimacy and the sensation of Kurapika's breathing. He could even hear the rhythmic beating of his lover's heart.

Such an experience was riveting.

"Always the egotist," Kurapika responded, and he tilted his head when Chrollo resumed delivering kisses to the skin along his neck. "Though, I won't deny that I still love you for it." The touch was not only satisfying and enjoyable but soothing as well. He purred in contentment.

Hearing the confession added to Chrollo's satisfaction. He drew his lips along the young man's pulse before biting down gently on an exposed area over his shoulder blade. Kurapika hissed as a result, and he merely breathed over the site in response. "Of course I am," Chrollo hummed before nuzzling his face into the crook of Kurapika's neck and shoulder, "as you should already know. But I'm glad that you do." He breathed in slowly, the scent of Kurapika's musk filling his senses, and Chrollo was able to detect the hint of spice beneath it. The aroma was something he never recalled Kurapika wearing before - or perhaps it had been some time ago - but it was alluring. "However," Chrollo continued as he pulled Kurapika back against him tightly one more time, "sleep now, my angel. There will be plenty to do in the morning." He added sternly before letting his eyes fall closed.

Kurapika laid there while absorbing everything Chrollo had spoken, daring not to refute what he said. It wasn't to say that his lover was wrong by the statement, not by a long shot. Regardless of the sarcasm behind some of Chrollo's words, it was evident they all needed rest, including Amar, who was standing like a sentry near the center of camp. Kurapika sighed when he felt the older man's breathing start to even out, which indicated that he had fallen asleep.

With no other reason to remain awake, Kurapika also closed his eyes and allowed himself to relax. In a few hours, either he or Chrollo would need to stand watch, so getting some rest was essential.

Fortunately, it had been pretty quiet, and none of the natives from Fallyne had managed to follow them, which boded well in the long run. Yet, there was still reason for concern. Even if there was an off chance that someone happened across them, especially during the night, they needed to be made aware. It was always best to err on the side of caution.

As darkness began to envelop him, Kurapika slowly drifted off with nothing else on his mind but the events of the days to come.

The sun had just crested the forest when its rays slowly blanketed the land in a golden, morning glow. A gentle breeze swept across the area and through the trees, the leaves rustling with its sway.

Kurapika stood beside the extinguished fire pit while sipping coffee as Chrollo finished packing the rest of their belongings. He unconsciously used his right foot to scrape away a few pieces of leftover ash to ensure that no traces of their presence remained before turning to the sky ahead. Gradually the light of the morning had made itself fully known, and before long, they would be heading to the city of Gaspen where their next target was.

He took another pull from the mug and watched as the sun rose higher and higher into the sky. It was glorious, like a breathtaking piece of art coming to life, and for once, Kurapika was truly in awe.

"Spectacular, is it?" Chrollo commented as the older man came up beside him. There was a look of contemplation on his lover's visage, and it reminded Kurapika of how inspiring he was.

The mug came to his lips again as he watched the way the sun highlighted Chrollo's features, making him look gorgeous and exquisite as ever. "It's truly a sight to behold," Kurapika replied and turned forward again. Looking at the sunrise reminded him so much of home.

But that was gone, and all he had left were memories. Now, he would have to make new ones while finding another place to rest his weary head. Kurapika hoped to do that with Chrollo one day.

Before he knew it, Chrollo had tugged him close to his, and sturdy fingers held him tight. "It still doesn't match up to the beauty that is beside me." He commented offhandedly, and a mug suddenly appeared in his hand as Chrollo lifted it to take a drink. "And it probably never will." Kurapika raised an eyebrow at the plaudit, but he merely kept his focus ahead.

Chrollo was notorious for his grandiose attempts at flattery, yet Kurapika loved him nonetheless. The Ryodan leader was a selfish jerk and asshole at times, but he wouldn't have it any other way.

"You always try to praise me with visions of grandeur and constant platitudes, but have you ever thought of how life could be without anything lavish?" This time Chrollo was the one who appeared inquisitive, a thoughtful expression replacing the gratification that was once there.

His cup rose, and Chrollo observed the young blond from over the rim. "Naturally, I have," he spoke, voice calm and smooth, "as a simple life is no less appealing than one paved in gold. Though when it comes to you," Chrollo paused and bent down to plant a kiss to Kurapika's cheek before trailing forward to brush against those pink mounds softly, "life couldn't be any better without you in it."

Seconds later, Chrollo pressed his mouth firmly to Kurapika's, and the flavor of hazelnut coffee permeated his senses. Almost instantly, the younger man kissed back with equal fervor, and Chrollo swore he heard a low, resonant growl echo from within Kurapika's throat. It was thrilling while leaving his mind numb, and Chrollo groaned when he felt his lover pull then nip roughly at his bottom lip.

The sudden act surprised him, but it also gave him the chance to push his tongue inside the other man's mouth. Right away, Chrollo began exploring the inside of Kurapika's warm cavern before deciding to tangle with his awaiting tongue. The two appendages fought for dominance until both of them could no longer deny themselves air.

When they finally broke apart, a thin trail of saliva still connected them. It glistened in the morning light before falling away.

Kurapika stood there catching his breath, eyes partially glazed over as he watched Chrollo intently. A thin river of blood trickled down over the surface of the older man's tanned lip, and without thinking, Kurapika purred, then leaned forward to lap it away before grinning mischievously.

It was something else that Chrollo did not fully expect.

"Then I suppose I have to agree with you," Kurapika replied cheekily, and he licked slowly at his lips, a metallic taste still upon them. It was odd just how alluring it was. He could see that some crimson also remained on Chrollo's lips. "Though, don't let the idea go to your head," Kurapika added, his mouth forming into an impish grin.

Falling silent afterward, Kurapika sauntered off to resume what task he had planned. As Chrollo finished preparations, he wanted to make a call.

After moving away, Kurapika noticed an ebony body pass by him. Amar didn't seem to pay him any mind as he continued walking toward the far side of camp. Fortunately, the young Nacknar had not been privy to what transpired only moments ago. Kurapika felt a wave of heat rise along the skin of his neck and cheeks at the thought. Had it happened, he would have been utterly embarrassed.

Chances of that happening are a lot higher now that you and Chrollo are not alone. Kurapika reminded himself. Amar was now their companion, so they had to watch how far their affections went, especially when it came to intimacy.

There would be nothing like having sex in front of another being. Kurapika loathed voyeurism, and someone like Amar was intelligent enough to know what was going on.

He grunted and cast the notion aside. When it came down to it, they would just have to be careful when expressing how they feel for one another.

When he reached the campsite's outer perimeter, Kurapika found a fallen tree log to sit down on, then dug into the pocket of his cargo pants, and retrieved his phone. Blue eyes locked on its dark but blank screen for several long minutes, his anxiety and apprehension making itself clearly known.

Again he had been slack in calling his friends, and Kurapika was more than surprised that none of them had reached out after such a long silence. He could only imagine the words that would come from each of them, primarily Leorio, as the slender man had a severe disdain for Chrollo from the very start. It was more than obvious his doctor friend had feelings for him that extended beyond friendship.

However, that aspect wore heavily on Kurapika's nerves. While he cared for Leorio like a brother, he belonged to Chrollo, and there was no changing that. Because of how ridiculous it had become, Kurapika wished so many times that Leorio would just give up. The man really needed to move forward and focus on his studies instead.

Given enough time, he would finally complete his studies and become a doctor. Then maybe after that, he would manage to find someone special.

It took him several minutes before he worked up the nerve to swipe his finger over the call button after finding Gon's number in the address book. The line seemed to ring for a near eternity before a familiar voice came over the receiver.

"Hello? Kurapika?" It didn't take him long to recognize who was speaking, and he quickly prepared for what may come next.

"Yeah, it's me Killua. I know it's been a while."

Since Killua had been the one to answer Gon's phone, it was quite strange, mainly because the young boy usually made it a point to always keep the phone on his person. But this time, that didn't appear to be the case. Dealing with Killua right off the bat only made the situation more complicated, yet there was no getting around it.

There was a sufficient pause over the line, and Kurapika could sense the tension building. "What the hell man?! Do you realize how long it's been since we last heard from you?" Killua barked, and Kurapika instantly winced. His silver-haired friend was definitely not being merciful this time around. "Why does this seem to be a continuous problem?" Kurapika closed his eyes.

Killua was right. No matter how many times he told his friends that he would maintain regular contact with them, he always tended to fall short. This instance was worse than before. It was evident there was annoyance in Killua's voice, and Kurapika did what he could to brace himself.

"Yes, I'm aware. Though, I will say before anything that it's no excuse for my recent behavior." Kurapika fell silent while letting his confession sink in. He already was able to discern the accusation in Killua's voice, and he felt a trickle of shame due to it. Just the very aspect left him repentant. Kurapika knew it made him a bad friend, and he hated that.

The sound of deep breathing echoed through the phone. Killua was definitely not impressed. "Of course it's not an excuse!" He retorted. Kurapika winced again at his friend's harsh words. "Do you know how worried Gon has been? Even Leorio keeps questioning if you're okay or not."

Kurapika sighed. He should have expected it, or at least, the intensity of the tongue lashing he would receive. It wasn't that his friends were entirely worried about his safety or the mission he was on, but the lack of communication that led them to wonder about his welfare.

Coming into contact with so many potentially dangerous situations invoked those feelings, which Kurapika knew he shouldn't be surprised about.

He really was inconsiderate at times.

"If I said that I wasn't, then I would be lying." He responded, honestly evident in his voice. "You don't have to forgive me, just know that I don't blame you for how angry and disappointed you are."

Silence ensued between them, and the stillness made Kurapika tense even more. Killua was practical and genuinely honest, though he was also the one that did not hesitate in expressing his reservations when it came to questionable situations. Leorio, on the other hand, tended to lash out and get hysterical, his rationale generally followed by boorish conduct. Gon, well, he was the one who tried to look at any situation from all angles. He was usually the most open-minded.

Killua grunted almost suddenly, but his voice was less stiff by the time he responded. "It's not that we don't forgive you," he began, the sound of his words more firm than strained, "as we know what you are doing, and why. We also understand your reason for choosing to be with Lucifer - er Chrollo as well. Neither Gon nor I hate you for it, and we support your decisions. Maybe Leoiro doesn't entirely as he acts funny any time your boyfriend is mentioned, but that's beside the point." Again there was another pause, and Kurapika waited for Killua to finish with bated breath. Fortunately, they still cared for him despite everything that happened. "What we really want is for you to call us more often, as you've been told before, so at least we know how you are and not if you're alive or dead. Though Gon and I do entrust that Chrollo will keep you out of danger."

It was like taking in a breath of fresh air. Although his friends had stressed they weren't objectionable to his choice regarding Chrollo and the relationship they shared, the notion there was some dissension over it still weighed in the back of Kurapika's mind. He already knew Gon and Killua's stance, then there was Leorio.

While the two younger boys accepted Chrollo, Leorio was begrudging about the entire thing. It seemed the lanky man tolerated the Ryodan leader only at his behest, which irritated Kurapika. He had since realized Leorio's behavior was due to the one-sided love his friend had, but it was a feeling that he just could not, and would not, ever return.

No matter what, it would always be unrequited, and Kurapika wanted Leorio to understand that and move on. He had no plans of ever leaving Chrollo. It's where his heart desired to be.

Kurapika closed his eyes, and he gripped the phone a little tighter than he tried to. "I do get why you said that." He commented. It was hard to prevent his emotions from rising to the surface. "And I don't blame you for it. I have been a terrible friend, all considering." Kurapika felt a twist of shame in the pit of his gut but suppressed it afterward. "However, I am still grateful for your support and acceptance, especially when it comes to my relationship with Chrollo." For a second, he experienced a thread of relief - despite all that happened - as his friends never seemed to give up on him. Even if Leorio was still somewhat of a problem.

"Who said you were a terrible friend?" Killua retorted suddenly, and Kurapika winced. It was completely unexpected. "You do have some bad habits, but no matter what, Gon and I will always be your friends! Leorio too, I am sure, even though he is a blowhard at times." Kurapika heard the young Zoldyck snicker at the comment, and he couldn't help but laugh. Regardless of circumstance, his friends always knew how to make the best of a bad situation. "That said, how is the search coming along?"

The question made Kurapika stop instantly, a somber expression returning to his visage. "So far, Chrollo and I have managed to track down and reclaim eighteen pairs. From what he said, Shalnark informed him that our next target is in the city of Gaspen. It's where we are headed next."

There was another pause, then Killua's voice came over the receiver again. "How many pairs do you have left to find?" Kurapika wasn't surprised by the question. Truthfully, he anticipated it. Naturally, his friends would be curious about how much there was left in his mission before finally achieving his goal. Like him, they would too be glad when it was over. He missed seeing them.

"Eighteen. We seem to be making decent progress despite the few, minor setbacks."

Again, there was another moment of silence, and Kurapika waited for the barrage of questions he was sure that would follow. "What setbacks?" He could hear the skepticism in Killua's voice.

"Well," Kurapika began, "he and I had encountered a few precarious individuals along the way, though it wasn't anything we couldn't handle." Again, there was a slight amount of skepticism wavering through the connection, and he was confident that Killua suspected there was more to it than what he let on. Kurapika didn't want to tell the silver-haired boy about his experience with people like Debron and Katarina. Making them worry wasn't his intention. "By the way, where is Gon?" Kurapika asked though he probably already knew the answer.

"Training as usual. You know how it goes. He wants to continue searching for his dad. While both of us were in Greed Island, he got a lead on someone who knows his father, so Gon thinks we should try and track the man down and see what he knows."

"I see. That is rather interesting. Hopefully, you guys manage to find him."

"Me too. Gon has been going on about it since we got back from that fight we had with those beasts. Speaking of which, is there any more news about them?"

Kurapika stiffened at the mention of the Nacknars. While he didn't have any real leads, he wasn't going to tell them about Amar. He wasn't sure about how either of them would react. It was best to keep quiet about it until he saw them again. "Nothing. Chrollo and I are still searching for answers while we root out the remaining Scarlet Eyes."

The young Zoldyck made a noise that sounded much like disappointment, but he didn't say anything else. "So, you two are headed to Gaspen. Where is that exactly?" Killua asked.

"It's on the Mimbo continent. Apparently, it's west of where we currently are. He and I have been traveling on foot, so it may take a while for us to reach it."

Killua exhaled before humming. "So, you guys are back in that area again. Just be safe while there, okay?" He didn't wait for a response before continuing. "Also, make sure to call us more than you have! At least check-in and let us know that you aren't dead somewhere."

The stringency to Killua's tone almost made Kurapika raise his hands up in defense, although his friend wasn't physically there. He merely nodded; the boy definitely wasn't playing around. "Alright. This time I will. After we get to Gaspen, I'll call you again."

His friend grunted immediately following his statement, and Kurapika could tell that Killua didn't quite believe him. "You've said that before, just follow through for once."

"I will."

"You had better. I am going to go check on Gon. He's been out there for a long time. You know he will train to the point of exhaustion if no one keeps an eye on him."

"Oh yeah, Gon is definitely known for that. It's a good thing that he has you watching him. Tell Gon I said hello. Leorio as well. I hope he's been studying like he is supposed to."

"He has don't worry. I'll let both of them know you called. Talk to you soon, Kurapika!"

There was a click as the phone hung up, and Kurapika slipped the device back into his pocket. Just as he did, Chrollo came up beside him. "Is everything alright, babe?"

Kurapika turned to face the older man, a faint smile on his lips. "Yeah." He responded, and Chrollo nodded. Amar came trotting up to them a few seconds afterward.

"Good. Then, I suppose you are ready to leave? It will take us several hours to reach Gaspen. Once we get there, I'll go over the information with you regarding our next target."

Hearing what Chrollo said piqued his interest as he was eager to get moving. Despite past events, continuing his search for the eyes was pertinent, and he wasn't going to stop until he found them all. "Yes. Besides, I am ready for a warm shower and a comfortable bed to sleep in. After we've been on the road for so long, I will be glad for one night without sleeping on the ground," Kurapika admitted. Having been spoiled by amenities along the way made him prefer that over roughing it. Not to mention, going too long without bathing drove him crazy.

Chrollo grinned at the comment. "You aren't the only one, angel. It will be good to lay on a bed with you for once as opposed to a cold sleeping bag." He joked, and Kurapika immediately kicked his shin. The smile that appeared on Kurapika's face made it so worthwhile.

Amar had watched the entire exchange with mild bewilderment, but he too was anxious to get moving. "I suppose that I can agree also, only on the aspect of finally getting shelter from the elements." The thought of cuddling with his companions made Amar cringe. Not like he was mated to either of them anyway. Leave it to humans to act so plainly.

The Nacknar's statement made Chrollo glance towards him, though his grin never faded despite what Amar said. "Then it's settled. We leave in ten minutes."

He turned away from Kurapika and Amar after nodding in averment and went to finish gathering the remainder of their gear. They would soon be heading for the city of Gaspen, another long trek still ahead of them.

Kurapika stepped back into the common area with a towel around his waist as he continued drying off his hair. The room wasn't exactly modest and larger than what they were generally used to, but Chrollo had insisted on staying at a place that was more expensive than usual. Although he had argued over the unnecessary expenditure and waste of funding, Kurapika ended up relenting in the end.

For once, it was good to not be stuck outside in the wilderness. Another night in the cold, and Kurapika thought he would have gone off the deep end.

His eyes immediately found Chrollo sitting comfortably in a chair with a book in his lap and a cup of coffee in his hand. The older man had showered before him, but Kurapika could see that his lover's hand hadn't thoroughly dried yet. It was amazing just how succulent he looked when his hair was like that.

It looked even more raven-colored than before. Chrollo was indeed gorgeous in his own right.

"Feeling better, love?" He asked and closed the book with a soft thud. Chrollo took a sip from his cup, though his gaze lingered intently on Kurapika. The younger man was still wet, and his hair clung messily to his head. It didn't help that his beautiful lover didn't bother to dress, not that he was complaining, though. Kurapika looked just as good, with or without clothes.

Even partially clad didn't matter. Chrollo thought about Kurapika standing there with the towel removed and nearly reached for it, but then he abruptly stopped and remembered that neither of them was entirely alone. His gaze then traveled to the opposite side of the room, where Amar was asleep with a blanket over him. A sigh exited his throat.

He knew there would always be other opportunities.

The idea of having Kurapika naked before him evaporated in an instant. Chrollo knew once the younger man finally dried off, he would end up putting on boxers at the very least.

After several minutes, Kurapika cast the towel he was using for his hair, and decisively sat down on the unoccupied chair next to his lover. "Naturally. Do you even have to ask?" He replied teasingly, then leaned to the side so he could plant a kiss on the underside of Chrollo's jaw. Kurapika leaned back with a faint grin on his lips.

"No. I suppose that I don't," Chrollo replied, amused by the younger man's behavior. It was good to see Kurapika acting so lively. More and more, his lover was opening up, and that pleased him. It had begun to show the true depth of their bond. "Though you still look no less than ravishing. Yet, I am sure that I don't need to tell you that, either."

Seconds later, Chrollo felt a fist come into contact with his shoulder, and he didn't bother halting the chuckle that soon followed.

Crimson highlighted Kurapika's pale cheeks, but he didn't bother trying to hide it. "Jackass." The smirk on Chrollo's lips broadened, and Kurapika snorted. He wanted to wipe that arrogant expression away, but what he would have planned to do wasn't exactly feasible at the moment.

Still, Kurapika wondered how his lover would have reacted if he got up and forced him to lie on the bed. The thought of pushing the man down and climbing on top of him pervaded his mind and caused his cheeks to suffuse an even deeper shade of red.

"Maybe I am," Chrollo purred, and he noticed the color staining Kurapika's skin. Whatever his lover was thinking about must have been embarrassing - or scandalous - enough to invoke such a strong response. He rather liked it. "Yet, it hasn't changed the fact that you love me nonetheless." He reached over and gripped Kurapika's chin, steading the younger man before leaning over to kiss him.

It was forceful, rough, but fleeting and only lasted a minute or two. Kurapika responded by dipping right back in before he could pull away to tug adamantly at his lip. It seemed his lover liked doing that. Kurapika's aggressive side really was enthralling.

When their eyes met afterward, Chrollo could see the scarlet in them bleeding away as they were returning to their usual color. Watching the change was striking and beyond alluring, the imagery almost ethereal. Kurapika remained a treasure to behold, one so elegant and rare who was not an object to contain, but someone to cherish. The man had chosen to be with a person like him despite past circumstances, and while Chrollo felt at times he was undeserving, Kurapika was truly special.

A monster such as him wasn't entirely worthy of an angel such as Kurapika, but he was grateful nevertheless.

Fortune really did smile down on him.

"Why is it that you are always right when it comes to how I feel about you?" Kurapika muttered and rose from the chair. He strode over to where Chrollo had placed his suitcase and retrieved something to wear. One of his hands brushed over a pair of red and black boxer shorts, and he quickly pulled them out.

Kurapika then turned his back to Chrollo and dropped the towel long enough to slip the article on. He was sure that during the brief exchange, his lover enjoyed seeing his bare ass. Not that he minded anyway. Once done, he turned to face the older man again.

Chrollo leaned back, almost nonchalant, and watched his lover with keen interest. "Perhaps it's because you never really tried to conceal your actual feelings from me. Back then, you did everything to put up a front, and that your 'hate' was your only real motivation for finding me. But in reality, babe, you saw just how connected we truly are." He stood and set the book aside, then closed the gap between him and Kurapika. Gently his arms encircled the young Kurta's waist. "You realized how intertwined our lives have become, and saw a different side of me that you once believed wasn't there." Instantly, their bodies contacted, and Chrollo pulled them flush together. "And it was because of that, because of how connected we are that I am able to understand, but interpret the way you feel about me." Slowly, he leaned forward, his lips but a few centimeters from Kurapika's. "You may not be aware of it, but we are bonded far deeper than you know. I may be the lowly creature that you chose to spend your life with, yet, it's those genuine, unadulterated feelings that keep us tethered, and gives me a better understanding of them."

When the last word left his mouth, Chrollo closed the remaining gap between their lips and drew Kurapika into a slow but gentle kiss. It didn't shock him when the younger man accepted it so willingly, although it lasted only a few moments.

He reluctantly pulled away after that despite wanting to continue their kiss for a bit longer. Chrollo didn't attempt to remove his arms as Kurapika seemed to be enjoying the embrace. It was only the fact that if he allowed the situation to go any further, more than likely, it would have transpired past the point of no return.

As much as he would have enjoyed spending a night of intimacy with Kurapika, Amar was in the room, and they had a mission to prepare for in the morning. It was for the best they both got some rest soon.

"Once again, you aren't entirely inaccurate with your assumptions," Kurapika whispered after he was able to catch his breath. He wound his arms around Chrollo's shoulders before tightening them. "Even though it is a bit pretentious of you." Blue eyes stared deep into abyssal grey, and Kurapika swore that he could get lost within them again. They were so clear, yet, thunderous in nature. "If I told you that I had feelings for you - albeit mixed - long before arriving in Ti'Alma, you probably wouldn't believe me."

Silence fell between them, and Kurapika ceased speaking after making his confession. Chrollo's expression remained unchanged for several minutes, then a look of knowing crossed the man's countenance. Had Chrollo suspected that he yearned for the man all along?

The way those wonderful lips curled upward gave Kurapika his answer. Damn that bastard. "Nothing gets by me either, my sweet Kurapika." Chrollo grinned even further at Kurapika's exasperation and reached over to brush the hair away from his lover's eyes.

Kurapika grunted but relented anyway. "I will accept that I suppose." He breathed out, the sound almost like a snort. "You really are no different from me." The affirmation earned him another shit-eating grin from Chrollo, but he merely accepted it without any further resistance. It was already a known fact that his lover was selfish, and there was no changing that. His feelings didn't change because of it.

Carefully, Chrollo tucked the wayward strands behind Kurapika's ear. It appeared that his precious angel was due for another haircut. Allowing Kurapika to look feminine would only prove to make it worse as Chrollo didn't like anyone even looking at him. The younger man already had an effeminate appearance, and though he enjoyed teasing Kurapika about it, there was no need to draw any unwanted attention to him.

After they finished their current mission, he would get his lover a proper cut.

"Good. Because it's true. We are one and the same." He paused, then got close to Kurapika's ear. "And perfect for each other." Then without saying another word, Chrollo slipped away from Kurapika and strode over to the bed. The younger man watched him questioningly. "Now, it's best we get some sleep. There is a lot for us to go over before coming up with a plan on how to proceed."

Not giving Kurapika any chance to retort, he patted the bed commandingly. Naturally, his lover got pouty over the notion but still did as he was told. Chrollo watched him climb between the soft sheets before doing the same as well. He then swiftly divested his shirt as he wanted to at least feel Kurapika's body to a degree.

"I love you," Kurapika uttered and closed his eyes after he came to rest against Chrollo's side.

The abrupt declaration caught him off guard, but Chrollo grinned again before slipping an arm around Kurapika's midsection. "I love you too, babe." He said before reaching over to flip the light off.

Chrollo then closed his eyes, and the last thing he remembered was the echo of peaceful slumber.

After Thoughts: Although I had to put this out before it could be further proof-read, I hope everyone enjoyed it. Now that everyone knows who and what my OC creatures truly are, it may give a better idea of precisely what they are capable of and how dangerous they can be. Of course, the group which Kurapika and Chrollo fought along with help from the Troupe, the Zodiacs, and Gon and co were only one part of another group that is still alive. The Nacknars will possibly make another appearance much later on if what I have planned for them is something I can feasibly fit into the story.

Since the idea will be a sort of side story, it's not exactly a vital component, but if I can manage it within the predetermined chapter limit I have, then I will add it. For now, the Nacknars are stuck on the DC with no obvious way off. And are currently no threat. Whatever is preventing their jumping ability is ensuring that. :P

Though Amar, I will say, is a permanent fixture from here on out. It's going to be interesting to see how that plays out with Chrollo and Kurapika's relationship, among other things. So, it will get interesting for sure. ;)
