Remus stared at the sheet of parchment before him.
"Tonks, what is this?" he asked, as if the answer wasn't completely obvious.
"It's a letter from the ministry about your furry little condition," she answered. "You've been offered a job," she added, leaning over and reading the letter over her husband's shoulder.
"A job, at the ministry? Tonks, this is..."
"A once in a lifetime opportunity. You've done so much for werewolf rights and now it's being recognized finally. Remus, this is, this could, it could change everything. It could change the world for other people with lycanthropy. It could change the world for Teddy. Imagine, him growing up and not feeling the social pressure about having a werewolf for a father. I mean, kids can be, and will be, cruel. I'm talking from experience."
"I know. I did some shit I never should have done when I was younger, something so stupid, I doubt I'll ever be forgiven," Remus muttered, thinking about how stupid he'd been at school. He remembered the time Sirius had almost gotten Severus killed using Remus as the weapon. He could never get that thought out of his memories.
"You never know," Tonks shrugged. "So are you going to do it? Are you going to take the job?" she asked, her currently blue eyes wide with excitement and worry.
"I'll be the ministry's front man for werewolf relations. I'll have a target on my back, Tonks."
"And you don't now?" she asked. "I mean, you and I were Dumbledore's little soldiers. We both did things in the battle. I know we were pardoned from using the spells we did, it was war. Still.. there's still people that haven't gotten over it. We rounded up a group of wanna be Death Eaters just last week."
"True. And you're right, this could make a huge difference in the way the world sees people like me, even people like Bill. He nearly lost his job because of the attack. He doesn't even transform!"
"He's worried about his kids too though, just because, I mean, you never know," Tonks whispered, thinking about the fear she'd seen in Fleur's eyes earlier that day when they'd grabbed coffees together to talk about their respective children.
"I know. He's written me," Remus admitted. "I'm afraid I couldn't offer him much in the line of comfort. There's so many unknown variables to everything. What do you think I should do?"
"About the job?"
"Yes, about the job."
"I think you should take it," Tonks stated, giving Remus a firm nod. "I think it would do some good, help some people, and you can always quit if they start on their stupid ideals about you being a beast," she added, giving him a smirk, her canines forming into the little points.
"You know it drives me insane when you do that," he muttered.
"Are you accusing me of playing dirty, Remus?" Tonks asked, giving him a completely innocent look.
"Yes, I am, but you're right, Tonks. It is where I think I can do the most good, and with Kingsley as minister, I'm not too worried. I'll write him in the morning accepting the position," he agreed, giving Tonks a quick kiss. She smiled, grabbing the shirt of his collar and kissing him hard, nipping slightly at his lip.
"You really don't play fair," he murmured, taking her cues and slipping off with her to their bedroom.
"I never claimed I did," she replied, pausing only to check on their son, who was currently rocking a head of deep aqua colored hair. "But you love me anyway," she added, joining him in their room, leaving the door open a crack in case Teddy woke.
