Chapter 44: King and Queen for a Day
"June, is wearing this really necessary?" Drew asked from inside May's walk-in closet.
"Yes. I'm dressed for the part as Queen with my normal Princess dress, so you need to at least look like a Prince." May said from her bed on the other side of the room. Kiara and Dahlia are on the couch, waiting for the grand reveal of King Drew.
Drew blushed at the mention of "Prince". He checks his outfit one more time and then he exits the closet, revealing himself to the girls.
May stared at Drew. Drew has on a black military jacket and black trousers. He also has black dress shoes.
"So...how do I look?" Drew asked.
May blushed and stood up, walking to Drew. She stood in front of him and looked closely at his outfit, making sure everything was on correctly. She circled around him, checking for wrinkles. After a full circle around him, May stopped in front of him. She smiled. "Perfect."
Drew smiled at May. "I'm surprised there's clothes in my size."
"Our fashion designers have clothes in every size." May said. "Do you like the royal look?"
"I'd have to say...it feels a little weird to wear this kind of clothing, but I'll get used to it."
May took Drew's hand. "That's the spirit." She turned and faced Kiara and Dahlia. "What do we have on the schedule?"
Dahlia looked at the paper in her hands. "Let's see...you two have to meet with the people soon." She looked up at May and Drew. "There's a scheduled time when your parents would be in the Throne Room to help fix problems that the townspeople might have."
"And...since the entire city knows that you two are King and Queen for a day, I think you two will have a huge crowd of people wanting to talk to you both. Are you sure you can handle it?"
"Of course we can, right Drew?" May asked, turning to face Drew.
Drew looked at May. "Umm...sure?"
"Don't worry about the first people. I'll handle them, so you can see how to solve their problems. And then if you feel up to it, you can join in."
Drew smiled. "Okay." Drew loves how May is letting him know that she's behind him all the way. She's teaching him similar to the way he taught her how to swim.
May started pulling Drew by his hand, exiting her bedroom. Kiara and Dahlia soon followed after them. As they approached the doors to the Throne Room…
(This song is "I've Got This" from Tangled: The Series. Watch the music video to see how it is in this chapter.)
Two maids held out items to May. One was holding out a plate with an apple on it and the other had a plate with a cupcake on it. "Royal decision-making?" May glanced at both plates. "Hey, I was born to do it." She pointed to the apple and they continued walking. Two more maids held out items to May. One was holding a bouquet of lilies and the other was holding a bouquet of roses. "Yeah, sure, I'm slightly faking." May pointed to the bouquet of roses and continued walking. Drew stopped for a bit and pulled out a rose from the bouquet. "But there's not that much to it." Drew caught up to May and placed the rose in her hair. May smiled at Drew and they entered the Throne Room.
"Bring it on, I'm ready." May sang. "Cause I got this. I've got this. Just watch." May and Drew sat on the King and Queen thrones. Kiara and Dahlia stood off to the sides of the thrones.
"Your Majesties," Dahlia started. "may I present your most humble subjects." Two guards opened the doors to the Throne Room and a large crowd of people entered. Drew and May's mouths dropped open slightly at how many people entered.
(This is where the music video comes in handy.)
"He won't let Mareep graze next to his without a fight." A person holding a Mareep sang while angrily looking at the person next to him who also has a Mareep.
"Hm…" May hummed.
"How can I cut hair with this guy fiddling day and night?" Another person with scissors sang.
"Gosh." May said.
"Lately, half the city's overrun by cats and Skitty." A different civilian sang.
A lady held up a box with many Skitty in it. "Eating everything in sight."
"Right." May said, standing up. She walked down the stairs to the two people with the Mareep. "Pasture land is public. I decree you'll have to share." She sang. She then went to the people with the violin and scissors (like in the music video). "Earplugs will do wonders. You'll receive a royal pair." At that moment, a maid carrying earplugs walked to them, brightening the civilian with the scissors' mood.
May walked to the lady with the box of many Skitty. May took the box and started walking back towards her throne. "Henceforth, it is written. We'll feed every cat and kitten." She stood in front of both thrones and turned around, facing the crowd. "Here within the palace square." She sang as Dahlia walked to her. May handed Dahlia the box of Skitty and Dahlia started walking away. "Fair?" She asked the crowd. The crowd cheered.
"Folks, the line starts there." May sang, signaling with her hand that the line starts directly in front of both thrones. The crowd all got in a single-file line where May said.
Dahlia stopped and looked back at May. "She's got a knack for reigning." She sang. "So far, she's holding steady." She turned and started walking out of the Throne Room through a side door, carrying the box of kittens. "But folks are still complaining. So let's not throw confetti." She sang as she walked down the hall past a long line of people that are waiting to enter the Throne Room. "Nonetheless, I guess our girl has got this. She's got this. No prob."
May and Drew are both still sitting on their Thrones. When they think that they've listened to the problems of all of the people, the doors open, revealing a huge crowd of civilians. May and Drew internally sigh at all of the same people from before.
"Since we shared the pasture, we can't tell whose sheep are whose."
"Oops." May said.
"I can't hear my customers and ruin all their dos."
"Sorry." May said.
"Now the cats are quiet."
"But the rats are running riot. Up and down the avenues."
May leaned back in her chair, listening to the civilians arguing. The scene cut to when everyone left. Drew looked at May's expression and he took her hand. May looked at Drew.
"Gosh, what a huge disaster." May sang. "And everybody knew it. I had one job to master. And I completely blew it." She faced forward and stared at the floor. "I was so darn certain that I got this. But I'm not this." She looked up at the ceiling. "Not yet…"
"Who would've thought how far from getting this I could get?" May sang, finishing the song.
May looked down and sighed. "I'm sorry, Drew. I was a terrible problem solver. And a terrible teacher." She said sadly.
"No you aren't." Drew said.
"You don't have to say that. You know that I didn't do so well with those civilians."
"Maybe you didn't." Drew said. "But the Princess I know wouldn't give up so easily."
May lifted her head up and looked at Drew. She gave him a small smile. Her smile turned into a bigger and more confident one. "You're right. After all, the day is just getting started."
Drew smiled. At this moment, Dahlia just entered the room again from bringing the kittens somewhere. "I hope you'll still teach me about being a royal." Drew said.
"If you're willing to learn."
Drew nodded. The Throne Room doors opened. May and Drew looked at who entered the room.
"Guys! You're here!" May said excitedly.
The rest of the gang is who walked in. They stood at the bottom of the staircase. "Of course, Your Majesty." Gary said, bowing. Dawn, Misty, Ash, and Paul all bowed too.
"Guys, stop." May said, laughing slightly. The gang all stood up straight.
"So...you're King for a day, huh Drew." Gary said. "Does it feel awkward at all?"
"Umm...yeah. Kinda." Drew said.
"Well, we wanted to visit and see how you two are doing as Hoenn's rulers." Dawn said. "And might I just say that I absolutely love your royal looks."
"Thanks, Dawn." May said.
"Your Majesty." Dahlia said to May. May turned her head and looked up at Dahlia. "You still have royal duties to attend to."
"Right." May said, standing up. "I don't want to let my parents down." She looked at Drew. "Ready to go?"
Drew stood up. "Sure. But where?"
Dahlia looked down at the paper in her hand. "You two will ride a carriage through town, waving hi to the people." She looked up at Drew. "The King and Queen set their own time for when they greet the people in town."
"Alright then. I've done this before just...not in a carriage."
"It'll be fine." May said. They faced the gang. "Guys, I'm glad you came to visit today, but Drew and I have a schedule to follow."
"Right. Well, we'll let you guys go then." Misty said.
"I'm sure you two are doing great as King and Queen!" Dawn said excitedly.
"Umm…" May responded, looking at Drew. Drew looked at May and just shrugged his shoulders. May looked back at the gang. "Sure…" she finished unsurely.
"Well, I think we better go now." Drew said, walking to May and taking her hand.
And so May and Drew finished every royal duty on the schedule after saying goodbye to the gang who could only visit for a short amount of time before May and Drew had to leave. Drew learned a bit more about what the King is supposed to do, thanks to the help of May. When Caroline and Norman returned, May and Drew told them about their day and how they handled things. They said that it started off rocky, but they eventually got the hang of it.
Caroline and Norman both gave their congratulations to May and Drew for going through the entire day as acting King and Queen. May and Drew went to May's room and they took turns going into the closet to change their clothes to pajamas for the night. Drew is going to be spending the night at the castle, because he's allowed to by both his and May's parents.
May plopped down on her bed, laying down exhausted. Today was a long day. And very productive. Drew really had the royal experience. He dressed like a royal, ate a fancy lunch and dinner with May in the dining room, he rode in a carriage, sat on a throne, and he helped May with solving the problems of the townspeople. After today...who wouldn't be exhausted?
"Well, I better get going to my guest room." Drew said. He started walking towards May's bedroom door.
May sat up. "Wait!"
Drew stopped at the door and turned around. "Is something wrong?"
"Umm…" May started, a blush creeping onto her face. She looked down shyly. "Can you spend the night here?"
Drew didn't respond right away. "Umm...really?"
"Mm hm." May confirmed. She looked up at Drew. "Please?"
After a moment of silence, Drew smiled. "Sure, May." He walked to the bed. "Did you just want me in the room or…?" His voice trailed off.
May's blush deepened and she smiled. She patted the spot next to her on the bed.
Drew climbed onto the bed and put the blanket over him. They both laid down under the warmness of the blanket. They turned on their sides, looking at each other in the eyes. There was probably one foot distance between them.
"Today was certainly tiring." Drew said.
"Yeah...even I didn't think that there'd be so much to do." May said. "Kiara and I don't really have royal duties to take care of. Or at least, not as many as we did today."
Drew's smile faded. "Do you think that...I'm really the right one to become King?"
"Of course you are."
"But...being royalty just...isn't me."
May's smile faded as well. She placed her hand on his. "I love you, Drew, with all of my heart. And I know that it all seems crazy to think about you becoming King, but you're the right man for the job."
"But...it only seems like just because I'll be marrying you, I'll be King. Isn't that how it goes? How can you know for sure if I'll actually make a good King or not?"
"Oh Drew, marrying a Queen doesn't mean that much in becoming King."
"What do you mean?"
"Here in Hoenn, the Royal Family makes someone a King if they show the qualities of one." May said. "Marrying me is part of it. Sure. But my mom and dad know that you have the qualities of a good royal."
"They do? I do?"
"Yes. Just think about, Drew. You've shown generosity when we helped a little girl with her lemonade stand. You've shown honesty several times. You always keep your promises. You've shown your love for people and Pokémon. You're loyal...trustworthy...brave…" May paused before continuing. "Those qualities are why you're becoming King, and of course because we're going to get married. So believe me...you're going to be an amazing King. One that I'll love forever."
Drew smiled. "Thanks for that."
May smiled. "Let's just live our life and finish high school before we talk about this again, okay?"
"Okay." Drew agreed.
May closed her eyes. "Good night, Drew."
Before responding, Drew scooted closer to May. May felt an arm wrap around her neck, pulling her closer to Drew. May blushed as she felt herself laying right next to Drew in his arm. She can feel his warmth and she smiles.
Drew hugged May close to him and rested his head on May's. "Good night, Princess." Drew said, closing his eyes and drifting off to sleep with May in his arm, leaning on his chest.
