Miroku and Sango watched their friend and sister with something akin to worry and pride. For the first time in several years, there was a spark to her; in the way she spoke and moved, in her expressions and emotions. It was the first real hint of their beloved friend they had seen in a very long time.
Smiling, Sango glanced at her husband and motioned him forward. "Go ahead," she said softly, unconcerned about being heard as Kagome ranted angrily to herself and paced holes into the carpet.
Pulling a slim box out of his jacket, he approached Kagome and not for the first time was awed by sheer amount of power she controlled; it made his own spiritual powers seem minuscule in compare. Tapping her shoulder, he stopped the young woman mid-stride. "Kagome-san, might I have a moment?"
Kagome stopped and blinked, before taking a few deep breaths and catching control of her temper. Like a switch, she offered up a cheery smile and looped her arm through Miroku's. "Of course."
Grinning, he handed over the box as Sango approached, three glasses balanced in her hands. "You can't give it back," he warned sternly as he watched her open the box.
She gasped and immediately tried to do just what he'd said she wasn't allowed to do. "I can't accept this you guys! What were you think?!" she cried, both awed and flattered by the extravagant gift.
Sango grinned at her and took the box, pulling the silver necklace free. "We were thinking that it is a very early Christmas gift for someone we care about." A small pendant hung on the chain, in the shape of a crescent moon made of a deep blue sapphire.
"And that we won't be here to give it to you in person when the holiday rolls around," Miroku added, taking the necklace and moving around behind Kagome to latch it around her throat. "Most people would say thank you around now," he chided gently, lifting her hair out of the way and allowing the necklace to settle in the hollow of her throat.
Her anger long forgotten, Kagome could do nothing but stare at her friends and thank the Kami's for how lucky she was. "Thank you," she whispered, launching herself at them and wrapping them up in a group hug.
Miroku met Sango's eyes over their shorter friends head and nodded slightly. He could already feel the magic meshing with Kagome's own unique power. The sutra placed into the stone would protect Kagome where they could not.
