Appeal

When Souta received the letter saying he'd been expelled from his classes at Tokyo University, for a heartbeat of a second, he panicked. His grades were above average and like his sister, he was in the top of his class. He didn't party, was on a sports team…he stopped those thoughts and shook his head. Slowly, his heart started to beat again as he remembered what his sister had warned him about.

Sighing and tossing the letter on his desk, he picked up his phone and called her. He didn't bother with a salutation before speaking. "You were right sis. He's trying to get me kicked out."

In her shop, Kagome muttered a small curse as she watched her cashier handled customers, the phone pressed against her ear. "Alright. Save the letter for me and file an appeal and a hearing, just like I told you."

"Yeah, I know." He looked around his dorm room, at the three other beds in the huge suite and couldn't help the fear that that clogged his throat. "You're sure everything is going to be okay?" he asked softly, 'I really love it here.'

She heard the unspoken words and tried her best to be the confidant, strong older sister he'd grown up with, never mind that the past year of her life she had been nothing but a wreck. "Of course," she answered, smiling into the receiver. "Everything's going to be just fine. You've done nothing wrong and they've got no plausible reason to dismiss you from the school. Just keep going to your classes and don't forget to file for an appeal with the school!"

Souta smirked into the phone, her confidence drifting over to him and dropped into the chair at his desk. "Alright, mom! I got it!"

Kagome laughed and without saying anything, hung-up the phone. Souta tossed his own cell onto his bed and pulled his biology book closer, prepared to spend the rest of the night studying, his earlier fear pushed to the back of his mind.
