A/N: Hey everyone! For some reason, this chapter has been glitching. I've been told that it keeps disappearing. I'm not sure what's going on or why it's doing this but hopefully it will be resolved soon. Please let me know if it continues to disappear or if it actually stays this time.
Chapter Four
(Eric's POV)
I didn't realize how exhausted I was until I laid down on the couch. Instantly, I found myself drifting off to sleep. However, only mere seconds later I'm startled awake by a noise that makes my stomach drop.
That was definitely a raptor and it's in the building.
Shit, Owen.
I quietly get up and move towards the door. I need to think fast or he's going to die.
I listen at the door and listen to the raptors communicate with each other. They sound close to the bathroom.
Shit.
Suddenly, I hear a separate call come from right by the door, causing me to leap back.
Shit, I've been found.
I walk backwards towards the back of the room.
I hear another call from a different part of the room outdoors.
I know it is a matter of seconds before one of them gets in here.
However, nothing happens.
And to my surprise, it sounds like they are actually leaving.
I stand there frozen for several seconds, listening until I no longer hear any more of the raptors.
Then I run towards the door and throw it open.
I run straight for the bathroom.
Please don't be dead.
I open the door to the bathroom.
And stop dead in my tracks.
Amy stands before me, aiming a gun into one of the stalls of the bathroom. She looks older. Her once tiny body was now toned and muscular. Her hair, which is tied into a messy bun, is lighter than I remember, but there's no mistaking it. It's her.
"Amy…"
Amy turns at the sound of my voice, aiming the gun in her hands directly at me, but then surprise crosses her features. Her lips part in a shocked expression and she lowers the gun a few inches.
"…Eric?"
All I can do is stare at her. It's been three years since I last saw her. For the last two years, I believed she had to have died. But here she stands before me, alive.
"You look…older." She says quietly.
I surprised laugh escapes me. "S-So do you."
She looks between Owen, who's no longer hidden by the stall door and me. She looks uncertain.
Anger crosses her features and she raises the gun at me again causing me to take a step back. "Is this a trick?"
"What?" I get out, confused.
"I'm really not in the mood to play any games." She says menacingly.
"Games? Why would this be a game?" Owen asks her.
Amy swings the gun back around to him.
"Who the hell are you?"
Owen nervously glances at me then back at the gun.
"I'm Owen." He tells her. "I'm a friend of Eric's."
Amy turns back towards me before walking right up to me. She takes the gun in one hand and grabs my face with the other. She looks straight into my eyes for several seconds. I feel my face heat up at the sudden contact.
Surprise once again registers in Amy's features and drops her hand.
"You're real." She says looking away from me.
She takes a few steps back.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
"We came to rescue you." I tell her.
"Rescue me?" Amy says. "With what? You_" Amy turns back towards Owen and looks him up and down. "_and him?"
"…Well….yeah." I respond.
Amy releases a long sigh. "You shouldn't be here. How did you even know I was still here?"
"Hey, hate to break up this little reunion, but I'm pretty sure there are still raptors near by. Plus, do you really think a bathroom is the best place for this to happen?" Owen says, looking between us.
"The raptors aren't a problem." Amy tells us. "But he's right. We shouldn't stay here. It won't be good if they find out you're here."
"…Who's they?" Owen asks, sounding uncertain.
"Later." Amy says. "I'll take you somewhere safe." She walks past me without a second glance and out of the bathroom.
"Shit, dude." Owen says. "You're girlfriend is hot. Crazy. But hot."
I shoot him a glare and follow Amy out of the bathroom.
Amy leads us out of the building to where an old jeep wrangler is waiting. It has the old "Jurassic Park" logo painted onto the side, which must've begun fading a long time ago.
"You'll need to lie down in the back." Amy tells us. "I can't risk you being seen."
Owen and I exchange glances but I listen first and hop into the back. Owen follows. It's a tight fit, and we're practically on top of each other. Amy pulls a tarp out from the floor of the passenger side and places it on top of us. Once she's satisfied, she jumps into the driver's seat and starts up the vehicle.
I feel the vehicle begin moving and immediately we're going over bumps galore and with each bump Owen and I slam into each other.
"Bro, where do you think she's taking us?" Owen asks me.
"I don't know." I reply. "But she said somewhere safe so…"
"What did she mean by they? What exactly are we hiding from if not dinosaurs?"
"I think she's talking about the shadow people." I reply.
"There you go again with the shadow people. What the hell is a shadow person?"
"Let's just say dinosaurs aren't the only things we have to worry about here." I tell him.
"Man, you have to give me more than that. Who are they?" he asks, seriously.
"I'm not really sure myself, but back when I was here three years ago, we began to see these weird anomalies. We call them the shadow people because…well they look like shadows. They are dangerous. They once kidnapped Amy and she was missing for a whole week. When she returned she had no recollection of that week."
"What the hell. Are you serious?"
"Yeah. I'll tell you more about what I know later, but Amy probably knows a lot more than I do."
Amy drives for about ten minutes before bringing the vehicle to a stop. She removes the tarp covering us and we sit up. I'm surprised to see exactly where we are.
"This is the cabin." I say.
"Yep." Amy responds. "Shortly after I left, I ended up coming back. For some reason they can't seem to even get across the bridge so it should be safe. You guys can…make yourselves at home I guess. There's soup in the fridge."
"Wait, where are you going?" I ask her.
"I can't leave the vehicle here. I'm going to drop it off at the garage and walk back." She responds.
"Let me come with you." I say to her, not wanting to be away from her after I just found her.
"No." she tells me before turning to leave
"Amy, please." I plead with her.
She turns back towards me. "It's not safe, Eric. I will be fine. I'd done it a million times."
I look at her for several seconds, contemplating what to say to convince her, but coming up with nothing.
"I…I haven't seen you in three years." I tell her. "I thought you were dead."
Amy looks down. "Look, we can talk and everything once I'm back. I wont take long."
I release a sigh, realizing I wasn't going to win here. "Alright."
Amy gets back in the vehicle and I watch as she drives off. I turn towards Owen who's starting at the bridge in front of him.
"You sure this is safe, man?" he asks, looking at it unsure.
"Well, it hasn't fallen yet." I respond.
Owen takes a shaky step forward, testing out the bridge. Then he begins to cross. Once he's several feet across, I begin to follow. As I cross, I state at the cabin before us. It feels really weird being back. I never imagined I would be.
At the side of the house I see the garden we started. It has since gotten bigger and it looks like Amy has not only added improvements, but more produce as well.
I follow Owen up the stairs and onto the porch of the cabin. We enter the cabin and I take a moment to look around. The inside looks pretty much the same as when I left. I look over at the fireplace and instantly feel my face get warm when I remember what we did here three years ago.
"Why is your face so red?" Owen asks me.
"I don't know." I tell him, brushing it off. "Maybe I got sunburned."
"Right." Owen replies. "So what's the plan? Now that we found Amy, how are we going to get off this island?"
"Remember what the reporter said? They said they had people trying to get to the island to save Amy. They just haven't been able to get close enough. If we could some how get to them or make it so they can get to us, we can leave."
"What if they give up before then?" Owen asks.
What if they do give up? What would we do?
I know I acted impulsively. I know I should've thought things through better. But now we are here. We have no boat and the only plan I have is to leave with the people trying to rescue us.
"I don't know." I admit quietly. I take a seat on the couch and instantly feel the exhaustion of not sleeping.
Owen takes a seat beside me.
"Might as well try to get some sleep before she gets back."
I don't reply but I lie back against the couch and let my eyes fall shut.
It felt like I was maybe asleep for a few minutes when I heard the cabin door open. I sat up and looked towards the door suddenly I felt as though I was wide-awake once again.
Amy closed the door behind her. She spares me a glance before walking into the kitchen.
"Did you eat?" she asks.
"No." I reply.
"I tried some of your soup." Owen says. "Actually pretty good. What kind of meat did you use?"
Amy looks over at him. "Dinosaur."
Owen takes on a look of surprise. "…No kidding. It's very interesting. Kind of reminds me of alligator."
Amy lets out a humorless laugh. "I suppose it kind of does."
She pours some soup into two bowls. Owen must've heated it over the stove while I was asleep. She then grabs the bowls and walks back out into the living room. She walks up to me and hands me a bowl. I reach up to take it and feel my hands brush against hers as she hands it to me. I instantly feel my heart speed up.
It's crazy, three years later and those feelings are still very much there. However, Amy doesn't even seem to notice as she takes a seat of the farther end of the couch. She takes a spoonful of soup and then glances between Owen and I.
"So you want to tell me why the hell you came back?" Amy asks suddenly, sounding angry. "What were you thinking?"
Feeling a little taken aback by her tone, I stumble over my words. "I…we…we came for you."
"Oh so you decided you and your friend here were just going to get on a plane and a boat and sail to the most dangerous island in the world to rescue me with zero supplies and nothing to defend yourself. Seriously, what the hell were you thinking?"
"W-We had supplies." I stammer.
"Unfortunately, we lost our supplies along with our boat."
"I ask again. What the hell were you thinking?"
She's looking right at me now, waiting for me to give her some explanation.
"I was thinking of you." I tell her.
Amy releases a sigh and looks away.
"How'd you even know I was alive?" She asks more quietly.
"There was a news report." Owen tells her for me. "You were on TV."
"I was on TV?" Amy asks, her brows raised. "How? Why?"
"People have been trying to rescue you for the last few days." I tell her. "They got your distress signal."
"…Distress signal…"Amy says looking confused. Then her face seems to come to some sort of realization. "Shit."
She sets her soup on the table in front of her and runs up the stairs before Owen or I have any time to react.
"What do you think that was all about?" Owen asks me from the chair he's sitting in.
"No idea." I respond. I start feeling a bit of dread rise up in me after seeing Amy's reaction.
Something clearly wasn't right.
I set my soup on the table and begin to head up the stairs.
When I reach the top step, I begin to walk down the narrow hall and notice the room we avoided before was wide open and Amy was sitting at the desk inside. All those strange markings and words still lined the wall, giving the room an extremely eerie feel.
Amy was sitting at the desk, messing with some sort of radio.
"Shit." I hear her curse beneath her breath.
"What is it?" I ask her.
She jumps slightly at the sound of me, but quickly gets back to focusing on what she's doing.
"I didn't put out that distress signal." Amy tells me.
I take a moment to mull over her words. If she didn't put out the distress signal…
Then who did?
