A MockingJay Story Part 2 Chapter 1

"I need to tell you something." Liam said, standing on one knee. His arm was on Clara's shoulder. They were in her room.

"Where's mama?" Clara asked. "I want to see her."

"Clara you should sit down." Liam said.

"They left to go get her. Now they're back. I heard people talking. They're back." Clara said.

Liam folded his lips inward. "Some are. Joanna, Annie, and Peeta." His heart raced with each passing moment. It felt like it would beat out of his chest. He couldn't close his for fear of seeing it in his mind again.

Clara narrowed her eyes. "They didn't get her? She's-she's still gone." She stepped back, walking around her room. "We were so close. I actually thought- I need her here." She put her hand on her forehead. "I don't know how much longer I can wait. I miss her too much."

Liam's eyes began to water just as his forehead dropped beads of sweat. He covered his mouth, struggling to find the right words. "Clara." He said.
She looked over to him. She walked back to him, within arms length.

"She's not missing." Liam said. He took her hands. He took a few breathes, before continuing. He kept getting flashes of seeing her body. All the blood. Her face. He looked her in the eyes and said, "She's dead."

Clara stared at him, eyes filling with water. Her eyes slowly moved to the ground. She let go of him, turning her body away from him.

"Clara, I'm so sorry." He said. His eyes were red from quiet tears streaming down his face.

Clara quickly turned back to him. "What do you mean, dead?"

Liam wiped his face. "She's not coming back. She's gone, like Emily and Jerome."

She sniffed, taking a step towards him. "Are-are you sure she's not just really sick?"

"I saw for myself." Liam said. "There's no way she could survive that. She wasn't breathing. She-She's dead."

Clara nodded, seeming okay for just a moment, before sinking into his arms, wailing.

Once Liam could bare to hear his sister's name without crying, we went to visit Joanna in the infirmary. He walked over there, avoiding the looks of sympathy that was all to familiar with.

He found in her hospital bed looking slightly better from when they had rescued her. She still looked sleep deprived but she was eating well. "What? I actually have a visitor?"

Liam gave her an annoyed look. "I know Shay visits you all the time."

Joanna made a face, giving it away. She eyes him and asked, "You want to know about your sister, right? How she was tortured? When she died? Why they killed her-"

"Just slow down." Liam said, getting irritated. "How long ago? How close were we to saving her?"

Joanna took a moment before responding. "About two days before you came."

Liam took a few breaths, holding in tears and his aggression. "Why did they do it? Why her? Why that day?"

A smirk rose on her face, which she quickly pushed away. "Her cell was right next to mine. And Peeta was in the other side of me. Through these small vents in the ceiling, we could talk. Couldn't see each other, but I could hear their voice. Their screams." She looked down for a moment. "She was always trying to escape, unsuccessfully, of course. She tried to take down a guard, but there were two more right outside to beat her before they sedated her."

Liam stared at her, hanging on every word, fearfully. He pushed back tears forming in his eyes.

"When she stopped and promised to be good or whatever, they let her out, to push their own agenda." Joanna continued.

"I saw her on the Caesar Flickerman show, once." He said.

"Yeah, well after that, they got made at her. Locked her in the cell for weeks. But she told me that during her brief outing, she took a small recorder off the set of she show. She held on to it until she use it to sabotage the Capitol."

"How?"

"When they finally let her out again, they wouldn't let her on camera again. So they had to attend these meetings, to I guess show her that nothing has changed. Her attempts were a failure. Riots still went on but nothing changed in the Capitol. The game-makers were still preparing for another game. The Capitol will do whatever they want because they can. Violet used the device to record their meetings. She played it to me. It was very incriminating. They killed one of their own at the meeting. A man was poisoned. You could hear him struggling to breathe on the tape."

"What happened to the recording?" Liam asked.

"They found it." She said. "They were doing a room search and found it."

"Did they read her journal?" Liam asked. Shay gave him the journal, feeling that he should have it. She swears she didn't read it.

"Yes. They needed to know that she wasn't planning anything. Nothing else she wrote about mattered to them."

Liam folded his arms and took a breath. "What's in the journal?"

Joanna narrowed her eyes at him. "You haven't read it?" She asked, shocked.

"No." He said. "That's-I'm not ready. I don't even know what to expect from it. Her last words are in it."

Joanna turned away. She tucked her lips inward.

"Is that why they did it? They found the recording?" Liam asked.

Joanna turned his way again. "No. There's more." She leaned back in her bed. "She took a poisonous pill that Snow used to kill his own from one of the guards. She snuck it in one guard's flask."

"Holy shit." Liam said.

"When the guard collapsed, they rushed into our hallway, carrying him away. Didn't find out until about three hours later that he died. That's when they sent in a troop of guards to her stall." Joanna said.

"She really killed one of Snow's men." Liam said. He smirked, impressed by her actions.

Joanna smiled too for a moment. She forced it away and said, "Her last words, were 'My children will know a world without the hunger games.'"
