Kol Mikaelson and the Unexpected
Chapter 38
Disclaimer: I don't own the Vampire Diaries or its characters
What? Another chapter after all this time? I'm as surprised as you are. Life and writers' block got in my way. Here's a small update to get the juices flowing again. Let me know if y'all are still interested in Klausy and Lissa
Niklaus 'Klausy' Mikaelson POV:
Lissa returned with Kael within a couple of hours; her nails were bright and sparkling. It was nice to see the light return to her eyes and a bounce in her step. The knots in my stomach finally unwound themselves. Maybe her going with Kael alone wasn't so bad. The relief was great, for all the five seconds that it lasted.
"Maybe you should let Mr. Kol come over," Lissa craned her neck to look up at me, open and guileless. "To apologize."
I could only stare at her, dumbfounded, "What?"
"Mr. Kol feels bad, prob-ly," She replied, mispronouncing the word. I didn't correct her like I usually would. "He thought we were tricking him, right? And he's Mr. Kael's twin. Maybe Mr. Kol is sad to be left out."
"I said Kael would be the only one," My eyes narrowed suspiciously at the man. His blue eyes blinked innocently. What? They said to me. I didn't do anything. "I said that, and I meant it!"
"I know," Lissa tugged on my shirt, drawing my attention back to her. "Please? I don't want anyone to be sad."
I almost caved, but something stopped me. It stiffened both my spine and resolve. I hate when Lissa is mad at me or disappointed at an answer I give her. I wanted to make my best friend happy, always, but I couldn't do it this time. She seemed behind me 100% when it came to Kael's siblings, until she spent time with Kael alone, that is. He spoke to her. Lissa didn't come up with this by herself.
Lissa was sweet, like the strawberries her hair resembled when the light hit it. If I've learned anything in this bizarre world we're trapped in, it's that people will take advantage of that.
"No, Lissa," I retorted with a stubborn set to my jaw. "No, mean's no. Kael is the only one that I'll let near us."
The girl deflated, and it made my heartache, "But…"
"No, buts," I cut in sternly. "I need you with me on this, okay? I'm keeping us safe."
She sighed in defeat and turned to Kael, "I'm sorry, I tried. Don't be sad."
Kael's eyes widened in alarm as he waved her apology away with a flourish. "It's fine, little tot. Don't worry your pretty little head about it."
Triumph surged through me, and I pointed an accusing finger at him, "You told her to say that! I knew it!"
"You can blame a man for trying, can you?" Kael flashed the most winsome grin he could muster.
"Yes, I can!" I hissed back. It wiped the look right off his face. "Come on, Lissa, we need to get ready for the flight."
The girl was brimming with excitement as she took the lead, "We're going home!" She flung her arms out and twirled. "Do you think Uncle Kol will like the pictures we took? They're good, right?" Lissa bounced happily into the room, only to trip over her feet. She righted herself quickly. "I'm okay!"
I couldn't hold onto anger when Lissa was so happy— annoyance settled in my gut in its place.
"Be… our… guest! Be our guest!" Lissa crooned softly. I felt myself relaxing at the sound. A smile tugged at my mouth against my will. My best friend picked up a discarded dress and held it up. "Put our service to the test. Tie your napkin 'round your neck, Cherie," She spun around once; the dress in her hands fluttered wildly. "And we'll provide the rest."
Ivanna packed for us before we left. Elijah packed for me when he took me to Kol's. My fingers hover over a pair of shoes, unsure the best way to go about this. The only time I packed was when we fled the Mansion, and I was running on instinct at that point. Ivanna had originally folded everything nicely, putting effort into the whole thing. Should I do that too? How would I get my clothes as neatly as she did?
Helpless and likely overthinking this, I look at what Lissa's doing. Oh, she was throwing her stuff into her suitcase any which way. Good, that took a lot of pressure off of me. I decided to follow her example. There was no point in worrying. I couldn't fold as well as Elijah and Ivanna anyhow.
"What's taking so long?" Damon barged into the room not long after. "We need to go to the airport. Take what you've packed, and let's go."
"What if I forgot something?" I protested, searching a drawer in the nightstand.
"I don't care," He replied bluntly.
"That's not nice," Lissa scolded, hitching a bookbag over her shoulders. The suitcase sat at her feet; it was too heavy for her to carry.
Damon rolled his eyes, "I'm not nice. Let's go." In one quick motion, he swept across the room, picking up my suitcase and Lissa's as he went. "Now."
The drive to the airport was very similar to the one we took from it. Lissa was looking at everything like she's never seen it before.
"Look at that!" Lissa pointed eagerly out of the window. "Oooh, and that! Wow! It's so great in Paris. I'll have to come back with Mommy. Look at that, Mr. Damon. Do you think I should show Mommy that?"
Damon sighed in exasperation, "I feel like we've already had this conversation."
"Nu-uh!" Lissa disagreed, shaking her head so hard her braids hit me. "We didn't talk about Mommy the last car ride!"
The main difference going back to the airport was the tension between Kael and me. He tried to start a conversation with me a few times and even apologized in French, but I steadily ignored him. Let him sweat a little; maybe then he'd learn his lesson about going behind my back and getting Lissa to ask his questions for him. Every time the other man checked his phone, my jaw clenched. I bet that was Kol. I hope he feels bad at my refusal to see him. It'd serve him right!
"Wanna play I Spy, Mr. Damon?" Lissa wiggled in her car seat with a hopeful gleam in her eyes.
"I'd rather fling myself onto the highway and get ran over."
"I'll play!" I offered before she could get her feelings hurt.
As soon as she turned to search out of her window, I kicked Damon for being rude to my best friend. He grunted in pain when his ankle shattered. It was fine, though; it healed immediately afterward.
"I spy with my little eye, something red!"
~~~ Time Jump ~~~
The first impression I got of Ivanna's house when I saw it originally was how utterly boring it looked. Everything about the outside was plain, from the white walls up to the shingled roof. It had no personality at all. Inside was only marginally better. Despite that, a grin stretched across my face when we pulled into the driveway after days of being gone. Ivanna will tell me where the Crystal was; it was finally over. It was empty inside, but we let her know that we were coming in advance. She said she left Damon a note with a more precise location in her office.
He'd get it for us. Ivanna didn't want anyone else going into her private space.
"Look, Lissa!" I shook her awake. "We're here!"
She woke up slowly, rubbing her closed lids with the insides of her palms. After a moment, her eyes lazily rolled open, glazed over with the remnants of a dream. Lissa's mouth opened wide with a yawn.
"We're here!" I repeated. "Wake up faster!"
"Leave me alone," She whined, shoving at my hand. "I'm sleepy."
"We can go home now!" I protested. "You have to wake up!"
"Home?" Lissa asked; her eyes glanced over, and her whole body froze. "This is Mrs. Iva's house."
"Hmm-mm," I hummed in agreement.
"She'll tell us where the Crystal is?" Lissa woke up more with every word. "We're going home now? Really?"
"Really, really!" I swore.
Lissa bounced and tugged at her seatbelt, "Let's go!"
"Let the man park," Kael chuckled at her. "We can't have you going home injured, can we?"
"Park, park, PARK!" Lissa chanted, kicking at the back of the driver's seat.
"Yes, little miss," the human replied. He was fully under Kael's control, unable to do anything about the kicking. I wonder if he was even aware enough to be irritated by it.
The car came to a stop. I had Lissa in my arms and inside the front door in the next instant. Damon zipped past me, headed to the office. Lissa wiggled impatiently in my arms. I couldn't blame her; I felt the same way. We'd catch each other's eyes every few moments and grin stupidly. Kael leaned against a nearby wall. The sound of the engine remained in the driveway. I can't remember the guy's name, but I still heard his heartbeat. It was slow and steady as he waited for Kael to remove the compulsion and let him go home.
However, I ignored all that. It didn't matter.
"What's taking him so long!" I huffed. It's been five whole minutes! I know how fast he moves; he should be back by now.
"Yeah," Lissa agreed, copying my huff of annoyance. "Come on, Mr. Damon! Hurry up! We wanna go now!"
"Don't be brats," Damon appeared a moment later, looking unimpressed with our antics. "I have the fucking location."
"Yay!" My best friend clapped enthusiastically. "Thank you!"
"You're welcome," Damon grumbled. To my utter astonishment, he pulled me in for a hug. There was the brief sensation of him slipping something thin into my back pocket. "Try not to die before you get back."
Lissa was thrilled with the show of affection; it shone from every pore in her body. "We'll be good! I'll miss you, Mr. Damon."
"Yeah, yeah," Damon rolled his ice-blues and shoved Kael as he passed. There was a scuffle, as Kael responded in kind. They wrestled briefly. My eyes caught a slip of paper in Kael's hand when he straightened up.
Did he sneak Kael something too? Why? Was it the same thing he gave to me? Maybe it was something he didn't want Lissa to know. No, that couldn't be right. Our hearing is keener; if he didn't want her knowing, he could talk too lowly for her little ears to catch.
"I hate your guts, princess," Damon told Kael. I could tell he meant it with everything in him.
Kael raised an amused brow, "Be a good boy. Hmmm? We wouldn't want anything happening to you. Not now that you're done."
"The stupid Crystal is near Dawson in northwestern Yukon. Enjoy your trip to Canada. I sincerely hope I never see any of you again." And then he was gone, just like that.
"I'm going to miss him," I confessed quietly. Despite our less than stellar introduction to each other, I grew fond of the surly vampire.
"Me too," Lissa frowned. "Maybe we can find him in our world."
"Good idea. I'd like that."
It made me feel better to think that way. Even though we don't know if he's the same back home or if he'd like us, he barely likes us here.
"I, for one, am glad to see him go," Kael clapped his hands and rubbed them together. "Let's go to Canada!"
"Canada!" Lissa cheered.
Everything was finally perfect. We got a flight booked to Canada. We spent hours playing at the park before our flight, so Lissa and I could get some energy out. I thought things were going our way for the first time since arriving at this looney bin.
That was not to be, because later on the flight when Kael wasn't paying attention, I opened the note Damon left in my pocket.
Don't trust Kael, go here:
Booming Ice Chasm, in the Crowsnest Pass area of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta, Canada
