Chapter 45: Teen Beach

It's the third week of March and the day of the Spring Play. Everyone is in the theater ready to see the play and the actors are backstage getting ready for the play to start. This year's Spring Musical Play is Disney's Teen Beach Movie with May as McKenzie and Drew as Brady. Pokémon will be backstage using Psychic to change the sets. Let's see how our stars are doing…

"How are you doing?" Drew asked May.

"I'm fine." May answered. "Maybe I'm just...a little nervous about the first song…"

Drew took May's hand. "Remember when I taught you how to swim. And you're not afraid of the water anymore."

May smiled and nodded. "Right. It's only water, so...there's nothing to be afraid of."

The first scene was great. May got on the surfboard and rode the waves while singing the introduction song. May and Drew had a blast with the first scene and the entire audience loved it. A few more scenes passed by. The next scene is…

May and Drew walk on stage from the left. The actress playing Lela ran to Drew and into his arms, May and Drew coming to a stop. May walked around to face the back of Lela. Lela backed away from Drew. "Thanks again, Brady, for catching me." Lela said. "You know, these are-" she said, turning around slightly and cutting herself off when she notices May.

Lela backed up, facing the audience. She looks at May and then at Drew. She gasped and looked back at May. "Oh, bonkers. Are you two together? I would never take another girl's boy. I mean, that would be stealing and, well, probably very hard to return."

"Uh. No. We're not together." May said, looking at Drew. Drew looked at May in slight confusion. "I mean, we're together, but we're not...together."

It stayed silent between them. May and Drew exchanged looks as if questioning what to say.

"Lela, this is McKenzie." Drew introduced to break the awkward silence.

Lela looked at May and placed her hand on Drew's arm. Lela smiled. "So, you wouldn't mind if Brady took me for a walk on the beach?"

May didn't respond for a while. "...please." She finally said. "I mean, beaches are meant to be walked on. That's why they're called...beaches."

Lela glanced up at Drew and then back at May. "You guys are strange." She paused before continuing and smiling. "I like that." May gave a slight smile, teeth showing. "Um." Lela looked at Drew. "Meet me by the water, Brady." With that said, she walked backstage to the right.

"I don't get it." Drew said. "Okay. First you break up with me, but then you throw me in the arms of someone else?"

"She's crushing on you." May said.

"I like you, and until you go off to that school, I'm not gonna like anyone else, but you."

"Okay. You're not seeing what's right in front of you." May said, looking backstage to the right. At this time, Lela and the person playing Tanner walked on stage. They're at the back of the stage, leaning on objects.

Drew glanced at Lela and then back at May. "...You're right in front of me." Drew said.

May faced Drew. "I can explain it to you, Brady, but I can't understand it for you." May looked at Tanner.

"So, the way to get her to like him," Drew started, pointing to Lela and Tanner as he said the pronouns of them. "Is for me to deflect her affections...off of me and onto him."

"I really hope so." May said. "I'm gonna do the same with Tanner."

"Alright. I'll be back as soon as I can get that smokin' girl to hate me." With that said, Drew walked to Lela.

May never liked that line of the play. But she just let it go and walked to Tanner.

Tanner is strumming his guitar and May walks up to him. "Hi." May greeted.

Tanner stopped strumming his guitar and he looked up at May. "Hi."

"Uh, do you mind if I join you?" May asked.

"Course not. I'd wanna join me too." The audience laughed at Tanner's funny line.

May laughed nervously. Drew and Lela walked backstage at this moment.

"So, hey, you know, I've never seen a chick quite like you." Tanner said.

"Chick? Really?" May questioned. "Hold on while I lay some eggs." May joked.

"Well okay." Tanner said.

"No, that was a…" May just stared at Tanner for a moment. "Never mind." She muttered.

"Thank you for the compliment." May said. "It's nice."

Tanner chuckled. "Sure."

May and Tanner walked backstage and Drew and Lela walked back onstage. Drew and the actress playing Lela were slowly walking towards the other side of the stage.

"So Lela, how come you bikers don't get along with the surfers?" Drew asked.

"Oh." Lela said. She looked up at Drew. "It's always been like that. We're not supposed to have a lot in common. Plus, we both want Big Momma's." She added, smiling.

"Some of them seemed pretty cool like...that guy Tanner?"

They stopped walking and faced each other, staring into the other's eyes. "It was very courageous of you to charge the stage like that and save my life." Lela said.

"Courageous? No, no, no." Drew said. Lela slightly nodded. "Maybe." They were just staring into each other's eyes at this point, getting lost in them. "I mean, I'm sure anyone would've done the same. Even a surfer."

"...You're my hero." Lela said, slowly leaning in closer to Drew.

May is backstage watching Drew and Lela. "Don't kiss, don't kiss, don't kiss." She muttered to herself.

"Hero?" Drew asked, leaning in closer to Lela. Drew could see May from the corner of his eye.

Drew and Lela's lips were three centimeters away from each other before Drew backed away from her. Lela cocked her head in confusion as to why Drew backed away.

"Listen Lela," Drew started. "It's amazing spending time with you, but it's not…" Drew paused before shaking his head slightly and saying, "I'm not what you think."

Skipping some lines with May and Tanner…

(This song is "Meant To Be" from Teen Beach Movie. Watch the music video because it's hard to describe what's happening on stage.)

Tanner starts strumming his guitar and singing, "I believe we all have a soulmate. The chance for a perfect duet. I believe in hopeless devotion. I just haven't found her yet. But in my mind I see...the chick who is meant for me."

Tanner tossed his guitar and it got carried backstage by Psychic. Tanner stood up from his chair and he took May's hand. "She'll be someone who is lovely. Someone wonderful and true." Tanner sang as they started walking towards the left of the stage. May's expression is a nervous and disgusted one.

Drew and Lela walked on stage, holding hands. Lela is the one pulling Drew with a big smile on her face. "The kind of boy who makes you smile even when you're feeling blue." Lela sang. They stopped walking and Lela twirled herself into Drew's arms.

"And I know, I know she's out there." ("And I know, I know he's out there.") Tanner and Lela sang. (Lela is the parenthesis.)

"Most definitely." Tanner and Lela continued.

"Oh, yeah." Tanner sang.

"Not a phony or a fake." Lela sang. "Sweeter than a chocolate shake, my 'meant to be'."

"When it's meant to be, you go kinda crazy." Tanner and Lela sang together. "Meant to be you forget your own name. When it's meant to be, that's destiny calling. And nothing ever will be the same. Oh yeah."

"You need a girl who's into music." May sang, now smiling. "To ride up high on Cupid's wings."

"Find the boy with perfect hair." Drew sang. "Hello, Hollywood ending with strings."

"Oh I know, I know she's out there." ("Oh I know, I know he's out there." May and Drew sang together. (May is the parenthesis.)

"Can't you see?" May and Drew continued.

"Oh yeah." Drew sang.

"Maybe you've already met." They continued. "The one you'll never forget. You're meant to be. When it's meant to be, the stars seem to glisten. Meant to be all the clouds depart. When it's meant to be, that's destiny calling. And if you listen you'll find your heart."

"Four eyes meet and the meet is sweet." May and Lela sang. "Could it lead to something more?"

"What's the deal when the way you feel" Drew and Tanner sang.

"Is something you've never felt before?" All four sang.

"Oh." Lela said.

"Gee." Tanner said.

"Um…" Drew said.

"Plan B?" May asked.

Several theater students joined them on the stage and it turned into a dance number. May and Tanner were dancing in the center of a circle of students and Drew and Lela were dancing in another circle.

"When it's meant to be, you go kinda crazy." Lela and Tanner sang. "Meant to be you forget your own name."

"When it's meant to be, that's destiny calling." May and Drew sang. "And nothing ever will be the same."

The dancing continued like from the movie and the song ended.

"It could be worse." Drew said. "At least my favorite movie wasn't 'Tarantulas On A Train'."

May splutters and then chokes a little bit.

"Okay. You've lost it." Drew said, facing the audience.

"If we hadn't have come here," May started as they both turned their heads to face each other. "I'd be on the plane right now, heading to some private school to become something that...I really don't wanna be."

"You don't, do you?"

May faced the audience. "You know, I've spent this entire movie telling Lela to follow her heart and do what she loves. And she did. She's more courageous than I am."

"That's not true." Drew said. "You're braver than anyone I know."

May slightly smiled and glanced at Drew. She faced forward and Drew continued.

"So you're glad we came."

May looked at Drew. "I couldn't be more glad." She paused before continuing. "It's like, I'm tied up, but at the same time, I've never felt more free." Drew smiled. "You were right. What's the hurry to grow up, when I could be stuck in 1962 with you?"

They smiled at each other. Cue the music.

"When it's meant to be," May sang. "The stars seem to glisten."

"Meant to be all the clouds depart." They sang together. "When it's meant to be,"

"It's destiny calling." Drew sang.

"And if you listen, you'll find your heart." May and Drew sang together, finishing their short reprise.

May and Drew both looked down at their hands and they took each other's hand, interlocking their fingers. They then pressed their foreheads together, closing their eyes. May nuzzled her head into Drew's forehead.

"The play was amazing!" May said happily, walking hand-in-hand with Drew to the front of the school.

"I think we all know why it was amazing…" Drew said.

"Yeah, yeah. Because you were in it?"

"Exactly." Drew said, flipping his bangs up with his free hand.

May rolled her eyes.

"But…" Drew continued. He glanced at May. "It's also because you were in it."

May looked at Drew and smiled. "Wow. You're actually giving me credit for why the play was so great. That's nice of you."

"Yeah...I know." Drew said smugly, facing forward.

May elbowed Drew in his side. Drew winced a little and started rubbing where May elbowed him. May faced forward without saying anything.

"Did you put more power into your elbow?" Drew asked.

May smiled. "Maybe."

"Well, it really hurt."

May giggled. "I'm sure you're fine. Don't be such a baby."

"But June…" Drew whined like a little kid. "It hurt…"

They stopped walking and faced each other as May giggled some more. "Aww...poor you." May said.

"You're mean." Drew pouted.

May reached up and ruffled Drew's hair. "And you're cute."

Drew blushed at his fiancé's actions and he backed away. "I told you that no one touches the hair."

May giggled again. She then tiptoed and kissed Drew on the cheek. "Love you. I'll see you tomorrow." With that said, she exited the school, leaving a blushing and smiling Drew to watch her leave.
