"Stravag!" Major Natasha Kerensky looked at the data-pad, her face turning uncharacteristically pale.
"Seyla." Commander Jamie Wolf looked across the desk at his friend and subordinate, a thoughtful expression on his face, "You could have... No, damn it Natasha, you should have told me!"
"Told you what? That I drunkenly slept with a man the press likes to call my Nemesis?" Kerensky asked, bitterly, "That I let my contraceptive implant laps because I thought I was too old? That I was so embarrassed that I denied anything was wrong until it was too late to do anything? That I sent her away, hoping that her father would know what to do?" she dropped the data-pad onto the desk, "I need a drink."
"Yes, well, if not for a somewhat cryptic warning from Vic Travers, we could have faced quite the public embarrassment." Wolf reached into a draw in his desk and withdrawn a bottle Glengarry Special Reserve Whisky and two glasses, pouring two generous measures, "You know me, 'Tasha: you know damn well I would not have judged you. You could have come to me..."
"Were it so simple." Kerensky took the offered glass, drained the contents in one go, then handed it back for a refill, "You know I have nothing but the upmost respect for you, but, at the end of the day, you are a Freeborn. Things are, different, for a Trueborn..."
"Do not dare try and hide behind that bullshit!" Wolf snapped, his eye narrowing as he put the bottle away, "You think you are the first woman in history to find herself pregnant after a one-night-stand? Think you are the first warrior under my command to find herself having to request nine months of light duties? The only reason you got away with it is because I gave you and your little band of reprobates enough rope to hang yourselves. But the fact remains that you should have told me: we have contingencies in place for this kind of situation! Your daughter should have been raised as one of us! Instead, she was brought up who knows where by someone chosen by, let us be honest, a borderline psychopath."
"I am surprised that you have not already offered her a position in the Dragoons?"
"How do you know I have not? If her records are to be believed, she has more natural talent than almost anyone I have ever seen. A little rough around the edges, maybe, but nothing that a little time with a good mentor could not fix. We could certainly use someone like her in one of our reserve units..."
"No. That I will not allow. I made a mistakes in sending her away, this is true." Kerensky admitted, "But look at what she has become despite of that? Of all the things she could become, she has chosen the life of a MechWarrior. No, let her forge her own destiny. I owe her that much, at least." she look at her commander, "What surkai must I make?"
"I am not going to do anything, officially. You have made quite a few enemies since we arrived in the Inner Sphere: I'm sure some of them would no doubt think that... no, I refuse to call her by that stupid name Travers gave her!" Wolf scowled, "Only your daughter would think it clever to take a name like that as her own. No, if the truth was to get out, someone might think that they could get to you through her. So, officially, she is no one to us; just another Mercenary amid thousands of others. Unofficially, you may consider yourself reprimanded. I will have to keep a closer eye on you and your unit from now on. Or, at least until such time as you prove I can trust you."
"Seyla." Kerensky nodded, "I... apologies. You are not just my commander by my friend. It was wrong of me to think so little of you as to not come to you with this sooner."
"Despite the best efforts of the Scientists, Trueborn are still human, and susceptible to the same frailties as the rest of us." Wolf smiled, "Just promise me that there are no other surprises running around out there?"
The End
Postscript: before anyone says anything, yes, I know that the timeline doesn't work for Vic Travers to have been working for the Bounty Hunter around the time Joker was born. That's because I honestly couldn't be arsed to do the maths at the time. Originally, Joker was going to be far younger (born around 2028), but then Natasha would have been in her mid fifties at the time. So Vic is now an unreliable narrator, but that does kind of fit with the Bounty Hunter persona.
