Nighthawk
Cordelia was dressed in her camo, her walkie talkie strapped to her belt and a stake in her hand. She wasn't far from Willow - they always stayed close together on patrol. Xander had gone down the alley to search out the mysterious noise they had heard and Cordy was waiting anxiously for his report. They may need to spring into action - if it turned out to be something rather than nothing. The hand clutching her stake began to sweat and her heart beat faster.
She was so over the camo. It was getting old. She figured maybe she would suggest that from next week they would go for a more athletic look - like Hilfiger. But other than the sucky outfits, the slaying gig was actually kinda fun. She was totally turned on by Xander doing his boy slayer thing.
At first she'd been less than impressed when she had returned home from her summer vacation to find out Buffy was still missing, the gang was holding down the fort and she was expected to take on the role of bait. But now - night after night on the hunt - she was getting into it. Apart from the outfits.
In fact, she was beginning to wonder why Buffy was so mopey and whiny all the time, when she had this, every night. It was so exciting, and dangerous and … meaningful. Buffy must just be an incurable crybaby … or maybe her moping was because of the outfits.
There was a sudden noise from down the alley. Xander cried out and then there were the sounds of things being knocked over. The rest of them ran towards the sound of the disturbance, looking to help out - and Cordy felt the adrenaline surge inside of her.
Two vampires were attacking Xander, he was down on the ground. Oz pulled the first vamp off him and attempted to swing a punch. Willow and Cordy grabbed hold of the second one between them and slammed it against the wall, pinning it in place. Xander scrambled back to his feet and plunged his stake through the vampire's heart. It exploded into dust beneath Cordy's hands and she felt the sudden rush, like an electrical charge, that she always felt when they successfully bagged a vamp.
Then Xander turned to help Oz deal with his vampire, but this one was more wily. It punched Oz, headbutted Xander and then ran away down the alley - leaving the little group behind in the dust.
'Quick - he's getting away…' Oz said, but there wasn't much force in his voice. They knew none of them were a match for vamp speed.
'Damn,' Xander said, 'we lost another one.'
'But we got one,' Cordy pointed out. 'That's one less murdering fiend to feed on the people of Sunnydale.' She grinned around at the others and saw them staring back at her blankly, 'yay us?'
'It could have gone worse,' Willow said.
'Are you kidding, we totally kicked ass!' They began to walk their way down the alley, back to the main road.
'We're holding it together, but this can't go on forever,' Xander said, wearily. 'We gotta face it, we need Buffy back.'
'She'll be back,' Willow said, her voice was firm. 'She will. She just needs more time.'
'And in the meantime, we're kicking ass!' Cordelia said. She was really enjoying these patrols: the thrill of the chase; the hot, sweaty feelings; Xander with a stake; the rush as the vampires exploded… she was always starving afterwards, and heady with an adrenaline rush that she could only dispel by getting into a heavy make out session with Xander. She couldn't wait for Willow and Oz to go their own way so she and nighthawk could get down to business.
Yeah - it turned out fighting evil really didn't suck … apart from the outfits.
