Chloe and Derek noticed the spasm too. Chloe opened her mouth to say something but closed it and looked at me instead. I think she heard what Emma said about her earlier and was trying to talk as minimally as possible.

"Emma honey," I said to her softly. "You've got to talk to us."

"I'm fine," she said.

Derek shook his head, "No you're not. Do you want to go back? I can stay here with Chloe, you two can go back."

Emma shook her head instantly, "Those aren't the people I remember, that's not my family anymore."

"I'm sorry," was all I could say. Her muscles spasmed again. "Emma…"

"I'm fine," she was denying that she was in danger of changing with a broken arm.

Chloe chipped in, eyes half open as she leaned against Derek to stay sitting upright, "Emma stop being like me and acting like nothings wrong. You might change with a broken arm if you don't relax."

"How-" she began but Emma stopped when her phone started buzzing. She pulled it from her pocket and looked up at me.

"What?" I asked.

"Why are you calling me?" She asked.

I patted my pockets, maybe I butt dialed her. I didn't feel a phone in any pockets.

"Answer it," Derek urged.

Emma clicked answer and set it to speaker. "Hello?"

"I think your friend left something behind Amelia," it was Scott.

Oh no I must have set my phone next to me after Chloe's text instead of putting it in my pocket.

"Can I have it back?" I asked.

"Well of course my son, why else would I be informing you that this was left behind." He paused then said. "Amelia has to come get it though."

The phone beeped as Emma hung up on Scott.

"We'll get you a new phone later," she said. "If Chloe's up for walking, we actually should keep moving. They won't let us sit outside their border much longer."

I stopped Chloe before she could answer. "Emma no. Look at you, you look like you're about change or panic or cry or all of the above. You need to calm down."

As I pointed it out, a tear escaped her eye. Derek reached over and gently wiped it off her cheek.

You know what? I thought to myself. You're not going to let this man have so much power over your girl's emotional state. You're proving your dominance.

"Jeremy? What's that look for?" Derek asked.

"I'm gonna go back for it," I said as I stood trying not to visibly wince from my back pain.

"No," Emma shouted.

"Scott is not going to have this power over you," I said sternly. "He needs to be put in his place." Emma said something in response but I tuned out her disagreements and turned to Chloe. "Get ahold of Tess and Elijah while I'm gone. Emma's right we need to get moving away from their territory. Start finding your way back to the road, I'll meet you there."

"Spoken like an alpha," Derek said softly as he nodded to me.

Emma grabbed for me to stop me but Derek wrapped an arm around her waist effectively stopping her since she had one functioning arm. She growled at him and I and tried to get out of his grasp.

"Jeremy this is stupid," she growled. "You're risking your life over a cell phone."

"Its not just a phone," I explained again as I started stepping away. "It's the principle."

"You have ten minutes," Derek warned over Emma's arguing as I crossed the territory border.

I moved as quickly as my injured back would allow, following the path our scents left back to Scott's house. As I approached, Scott and another man were out front.

"Scott," I said as I approached. "I believe you have something of mine."

He looked genuinely surprised to see me.

"I told Amelia to come," he responded.

"Who is this?" The man asked Scott.

"This is my son in law," Scott said. "His captors were the ones who destroyed my home."

I held my tongue knowing I shouldn't pick too big of a fight because I can't take on this full grown werewolf. The man didn't respond, he just watched me suspiciously.

"I asked for my phone back," I said to Scott.

"And I said Amelia has to come get it," he repeated.

I growled quietly, "She's never seeing your face again after what you did to her friends."

"Then you're not getting your stuff back," Scott shrugged like it was obvious.

"For goodness sakes Scott," the werewolf said flustered. "You're really going to be this stubborn? The kid just wants his phone back, give it to him."

Scott mumbled something under his breath about abuse of power and pulled the phone from his pocket. The man took it from him and handed it to me.

"I apologize for all the events of today," he said as I took the phone. "You and Amelia are welcome back anytime, as you are members of this pack. If you choose to roam the outside world, please be cautious of friends you make. You never truly know their motives until they're cornered.

I came here ready to give Scott a piece of my mind but because of this werewolf, I had my stuff without much of a fight from Scott. I nodded to him and turned to leave. I wasn't going to press my luck.

"Oh," he said softly as I turned then added. "Wait."

I turned around.

"That looks pretty nasty," he said. "Come with me, I'll fix it up."

I shook my head, "I'm fine. Thank you though, I need to be going."

"It'll only take a second," he insisted.

Scott made another comment under his breath about the impossibility of getting me to listen. Instantly I felt the need to go make Scott angry by listening to this man, so I nodded.

"Make it quick," I said.

And he did, he walked very very fast and I had a hard time keeping up with him. I think the adrenaline of the days events was starting to wear off, I was not moving nearly as fast as him.

He lead me into a building with a big red door, I assumed it was their medical area. He sat me down on the nearest table then started digging through drawers.

"Do I at least get to know your name?" I asked.

"Do I at least get to know how you found a long lost dead girl," he responded.

He crushed something up in a bowl, some type of dried plants or herbs or something? I could never tell that stuff apart. He set the bowl next to me then started bandaging my back.

"What's this?" I asked as he worked.

"Werewolves live off the land here, we do not depend on medicine like the rest of the world. Boil water and add this mixture to it, like you would with tea. Then drink it, but only the water not the plants. It'll help boost your system in the healing process. Give some to Amelia too, I hear at Earl gave her arm a nasty break. Tell her not to worry, he'll be punished for hurting one of our own."

"You know Emma?" I raised an eyebrow.

The man half smiled, "Well, knew her. We were best friends before she disappeared. Our parents were convinced we were meant to be. But the universe has other plans I see." He smacked a hand down onto my shoulder and gripped me tightly. "Take good care of her, alright? Tell her Billy says hi."

He set the bowl in my hands then got me off the table and out the door before I could respond. I stood there holding the bowl in silence for a moment. I felt…. I don't know. I felt something. Guilt for getting my wounds treated while the others waited for me. Anger for this Billy trying to claim Emma. Gratefulness for his help with the werewolf 'medicine' and my phone. There were more too, so many emotions swirling around in my head. I shook my head and told myself my emotions can wait, I needed to get back to the others.
