A/N: I can see that people are really loving chapter 36. I didn't realize that you guys wanted a sex scene so bad, I would have wrote one sooner. Anyway, that helps me for 'Guns and Scalpels'.
PS: I don't think that you are ready for this chapter!
Chapter 39: Callie
One Week Later
I hate to say it, I hate to even think about it, but things were good. As of now, things were actually great between Arizona and I. We are talking a lot more now, we are being straightforward with each other and god, the sex has been great, mind-blowing, more than I can put into words.
The kids have started to get along much better and by 'getting along', they aren't fighting with each other or they aren't making each other cry, they are cooperating. Even though Sofia and Finn were more like friends rather than siblings, I'm okay with that, we are okay with that. In fact, it was perfect for now. Arizona and I didn't have to make plans around the kids, we just brought them along and they seem to be doing well.
This morning, Arizona was going to pick me up from my hotel so that we could go to the hospital together. We have even managed to have meals with each other without worrying about the kids. Things were actually fine.
Usually I was the one who drove us around, but I didn't mind this. And since Arizona already had already installed Sofia's old booster seat, I didn't have to worry about Finn. I just had to worry about getting him ready in the morning so that I could drop him off at the daycare center.
I had taken him to get a haircut yesterday and that was a difficult ordeal. He didn't like it whenever anyone touched his hair, even me. So, there were a lot of tears and a lot of promises about donuts involved, that I don't intend on keeping. But of course, it had to be done. His hair was falling over his eyes and I had been putting off getting his hair done for quite some time. In New York, I would usually cut his hair myself while I put on some cartoons to keep him distracted but I just don't have that kind of time right now.
Just then I heard a knock on the door. "Finn, could you open the door?" I asked as I grabbed the last section of my hair and curled it. I don't let him open doors, but I know it's Arizona and damn she's ten minutes early.
Actually she was right on time. She being a Marine's daughter and all, for her, on time meant being ten minutes early.
"Hi Phoenix!" I heard her greeting Finn "Oh wow, you look so handsome"
"Yeah, Mommy and I went to get a haircut, it's not a big deal. I always look this good" Finn replied.
No big deal? That was new, it certainly was a big deal last night when he nagged my ear off about why we had to cut his hair and why he couldn't keep looking like a tiny homeless person.
"Where's Mommy?" Arizona asked before I heard a knock on the bathroom door.
"Just give me a second I'm almost done" I called out from inside.
"Oh, take your time, I'll just hang out with Phoenix"
"Sure, can you make sure he has his shoes on?" I asked as I started putting everything away.
With a child as curious as Finn, I had to always make sure that everything was put away and far from his reach. Especially with things like a curling iron. I mean I don't think he would plug it in and play with it, but I didn't want to risk it.
Just then I had a thought in mind. "Arizona?"
"Yeah?"
"Can you come in here for a second?" I asked.
I heard footsteps on the other side of the door before Arizona popped in. "You needed me?"
I closed the door behind her trying to make as little sound as possible before I leaned in and kissed her on her lips.
Arizona chuckled "What are you doing?"
"I'm kissing my girlfriend hello and to answer your question, yes, I need you" I replied before I kissed her again a bit longer this time, letting my hands travel to her hair.
"In the bathroom?"
"If I seem to recall correctly, you like kissing girls in the bathroom. Besides I don't want Finn to get any ideas"
Arizona nodded.
We had talked to each other about this. We weren't going to tell the kids anything until we had thoroughly discussed everything and Finn and Sofia were getting along better.
"You done in here?" Arizona asked as she fixed her hair. Honestly, I hadn't messed it up at all. But Arizona being a type A personality had to make sure her hair was just the way she wanted it before going to work.
I loved it when she had fun little braids going on, but I guess she stopped doing that when she started taking on more Fetal cases to appear more professional. Braids, no braids, Arizona looked great.
After I finished putting away the rest of my make up, I opened the door and walked outside.
"Come on Finn, let's go" I said as I grabbed his bag, my bag and waited for him. Arizona stood beside me as I felt her hand on my hand as she linked our fingers together.
I didn't want Finn to see me holding her hand but god it felt so good to have her hand in mine. So, instead I cautiously looked at Finn who was… skating around the hotel room. I guess he wasn't really paying attention to us.
I grabbed the keycard before Arizona, Finn and I made our way to the elevators.
Twenty Minutes Later
I had just dropped Finn off at the daycare center as Arizona left to go get changed into her scrubs. She had an early surgery. I wanted to spend some more time with her, maybe have coffee together, but patients come first, I was a doctor too, I knew that better than anyone.
So, instead I walked over to the OR board. I was bored and if I could watch some surgery to kill some time, that would be great. I was meeting with a patient in two hours so I didn't have to be in the hospital this early, but Arizona offered to drive us. I guess if there wasn't anything interesting on the board I could go spend some time with Finn.
Sofia was in school and we had plans to have dinner tonight. But who am I kidding? This is Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital, there is always some hot new surgery happening or at least something hot and new happening.
I reached the board and saw that Arizona's name wasn't on the board, huh that was strange.
"Calliope" I heard Arizona call out to me. Why does she look so good in scrubs? Like scrubs were designed to make doctors look hideous but she pulled it off.
"Didn't you have surgery?" I asked.
"I did, but I had to push it"
"What? Why? Is the mom..."
"Yeah, no, mom's fine but she ate something in morning, so I had to push it for later in the evening"
Oh, I see. Honestly, it's annoying that patients blatantly disrespect our orders but with moms it's a whole another ball game. We can't just tell them not to eat. That's not how it works, if the baby demands to be fed, then it has to be fed. All the Fetal surgeons and OBGYNs have to work around the baby's schedule, not their own.
"So… you're free?" I asked.
"Yah, I'm free. Do you want to get some coffee?"
"It's like you read my mind"
"Well, I know how to keep my lady happy" Arizona said as she briefly looked over her shoulder before hastily kissing me on the lips.
"Dr. Arizona Robbins, you shouldn't kiss your girlfriend in your place of work" I commented.
"Dr. Torres, trust me, I have done way more things to my girlfriend than just kiss her at my place of work, now let's go. The coffee cart on the second floor is much better" Arizona says before she grabs my hand and we take off walking.
This is what I wanted. Walking hand in hand with my girlfriend, doing menial tasks together like getting lunch or well coffee. It was that simple, it was supposed to be that simple.
"Hey Torres!" I heard someone calling out to me. "Tell me that it is just a rumor! Tell me that it was some sick joke that Dr. Grey is playing on me!"
I turned around and saw Dr. Bailey walking towards. Arizona looked up at me with one of her eyebrows raised, silently asking me if I knew what Bailey was talking about, but I honestly had no clue.
"Bailey, what happened?" Arizona asked as she dropped her hand and folded them.
I immediately missed her touch, but she was right in doing so. We couldn't let anyone in the hospital know that we were getting back together. But who am I kidding? This was Bailey, she probably already knows.
"Why don't you ask Torres here?" Bailey replied.
What exactly had Meredith told her? "What's going on?" I asked.
"I did not expect this from you Torres, you should have told me straight to my face instead of keeping me hanging" oh god, is this what I think it is?
A couple of days ago Meredith had asked me about New York, about my practice and about Arizona, when she came over to drop off Sofia. She wanted to know if I'd be interested in coming back and at that moment, I wasn't so sure. I didn't realize that it wasn't just some girl talk, she was actually asking me as an active member of the board.
Crap! Arizona was here, standing beside me.
"I haven't really made a decision-"
"Shut it Torres! I offered you a position here as a senior attending, as an attending Orthopedic surgeon, in the same hospital that you have been since your residency, the hospital in which you started your cartilage research, the hospital that has been your home for over ten years! And you didn't even have the audacity to tell me that you weren't going to take up on the offer?"
"Bailey-"
"No, we were in the same freaking class Torres, I expected more from you" Bailey finished as she marched off.
This is what I was scared of. I was scared that I'd finally be happy and then something would happen and take it all away. And guess what? I was right!
"So, Bailey offered you a job here?" Arizona asked.
"Yeah but-"
"And you turned it down?"
"No, I haven't, I didn't" I replied, but I could see that Arizona didn't believe anything I said. "I need more time to think about it, but I haven't turned it down"
"Then why does Bailey think that you did?" she asked. Arizona was surprisingly calm about this.
"Because a couple of days ago, Mer asked me that if I got a job here, would I stay. She told me the hospital was looking for more Orthos and that having a female Orthopedic surgeon on staff would look really great especially someone with a research background"
"And you told her no?"
"Not exactly, but I didn't say yes either"
"What about now? You didn't say you didn't say yes"
"It's not that easy Arizona. There's so much more to it. I still haven't thought about it completely"
"It's not! I'm here, Sofia's here. Finn's more happy here. What's more to think about?" Arizona's voice had started getting louder with each sentence so I pulled her into an on-call room. "Callie, I have been so compliant with all of your requests so far. Why are you thinking about this so much?"
I took a deep breath "Arizona, I have spent the last five years building a reputation for myself without being attached to this hospital or any hospital for that matter. My research is in my name, it's not some random doctor from some random hospital, it's me"
"So, it's about recognition?" she asked.
"No it's not. That's not what I meant. You know I don't care about recognition. I have worked so hard and had to start from scratch so that people would trust me, so that hospitals in New York would trust me. I have spent the better time of my first year in New York answering dumb question about why I left Seattle as they tried to go through my cases with a fine tooth comb. To give all that up for just an attendings position? In a department that I ran? I'm going to need some time, before I make a decision"
Arizona stayed silent for a while "Since we are being honest with each other and trying to communicate better. I'm going to say it. Callie… you are being selfish"
"I'm being selfish?" I asked. I didn't mean to raise my voice, but I couldn't help it.
"One moment you tell me that you are in this, that you want to give our relationship another chance and then now you're thinking about going back to New York"
"Arizona"
"No! I told you I don't believe in long distance relationships, so don't give me crap about flying back and forth"
"Arizona, I know that. I just need time"
"No! you need to stop being selfish! Here, let me help you" Arizona said as she opened the door and left without looking back.
A/N: That was a rollercoaster of a chapter don't you think? Anyway let me know if the drama fared well.
