A MockingJay Story Part 2 Chapter 2

Liam went up to his room after his conversation with Joanna. He opened the drawer in his nightstand with Violet's journal inside. It had the capitol's symbol on it.

He held the journal in his hands. He carefully opened it to the first page. It had her name on it, in her handwriting. He turned to the next page.

Hello Panem.
I've lost count of how many days I've been in here. They don't give us chalk to tally the days. This pen will barely make a mark on the walls. I think it's been at least a month.
The first few days, I thought someone would come to free us at any moment. Each time someone came in the cell, I thought it would be Liam, Katniss, Shay, or Finnick.

Liam closed the journal quickly. He put it back in the nightstand, unable to read another word. He closed his eyes, pushing a couple tears out.

Katniss went on another mission out of 13. This time it was to District 2. Shay and Liam were invited to go, but both turned it down. Liam was clearly not emotionally ready while Shay preferred to stay in 13 this time.

"Sooner or later," Shay said to him in the common room, "there's going to be a big battle at the Capitol. I want to be a part of that."

"So do I." Liam said quickly.

"I know. But we can't both go." Shay said.

Liam looked over at Clara sitting bat one table, quietly reading her book.

"The Capitol took everything from me. Everyone." He said.

"And she's all you have left." Shay said. She put her index finger on the table.

"The Capitol needs by held accountable for everything they've done." Liam said.

"It doesn't have to be your fight." Shay said. "What happens if something goes terribly wrong out there?" Shay asked. She tilted her head.

"Sitting around here, doing nothing is the worst thing for me."

"You're still grieving."

"What better way to move on than by shoot some Capitol ass holes?" He said.

Shay leaned back In her chair, folding her arms.

"What better way than to make sure Clara grows up in a world without the Hunger Games?" Liam asked.

Shay took a breath, considering his words. "I've been in the games. I survived twice. I'm more equipt to something like this." She paused for a second. "I have less to lose. I'm more expendable."

"Don't say that." Liam said.

Shay looked down at the ground. "You'll have less on your hands here. Clara stopped sleepwalking-"

"For three days." Liam said. "That doesn't mean it's over."

"The kids have stopped picking on her at that school-"

"Because her mom died. They're not monsters." Liam said.

"You're not ready!" Shay blurted out.

Liam gave her a look of surprise. His jaw dropped.

"You haven't even read her journal yet." Shay said.

"How do you know that?" Liam asked.

"Because you still look hopeless." Shay said.

"I started to." He said. "It's not like you read it."

Shay bit her lip and looked away.

"You read it!?" He asked.

"Bits and pieces." She said. "I skimmed to certain parts. Some of it was too horrible, so I skipped to the better parts."

"Like what?" He asked.

"I suspected for a long time." She said. "I had to know."

"Know what?" Liam asked.

"You need to read it." Shay said.

Clara started writing in her journal that day.

I have not added anything for a while. The worst thing happened. My mom died.

Her tears landed in the page, blurring the writing. Clara grew frustrated and tore that page out. She looked at the next empty page and tore that one out too. When flipped for the beginning. So many bad memories of this place. So many times she was hopeful for seeing her mom again. She tore out each written page, undoing everything.

The pages fell to the ground slowly. Each entry, now ripped out and wrinkled.

Clara threw the remaining journal on the ground. The journal flipped open, revealing all the torn out pages inside.

While Katniss was in District 2, Liam, Clara, and Shay met up in Shay's room. She held Violet's journal in her hand. Liam sat in a chair in the room while Clara sat on the bed. Shay was standing up, facing them.

"Now I won't be reading all of this. It's quite extensive." Shay said, flipping through the 100 pages of writing. "I'll just be reading a couple of the good entries, including the part you need to hear. This is the only I can enure you read this."

Liam nodded at her.

Clara made a confused expression.

Shay opened up the journal. She flipped through several pages until she found a good one. "Here." She pointed.

"Journal Entry 52. I'm trying to write in here every day, even though every day is the same. We get our meals, twice a day. It's hard being in here, away form my family, but they're the only thing keeping me sane in here. I imagine reuniting with them. Hugging my daughter again. Seeing my brother once more."

Liam and Clara smiled at the thought of it.

"But when I imagine that, I think about the mansion. I think about my life there, including Jerome. Why did I wait so long to tell him how I feel? Why did it take a freaking game to get it out of me? I wish he was here. I wish he was alive. Now he'll never know."

"Know? Know what?" Liam asked.

"That she loves him?" Clara asked aloud.

Shay flipped back a few pages, skimming the words.

"Just say it." Liam said.

"I'm looking for the right entry. You need to hear it from her. Her words." Shay said.

Liam narrowed his eyes. He had no idea what it could be.

"Journal Entry 31
I got sick again after breakfast. The guards finally told the higher-ups. They got a doctor to examine me. It didn't take long for his diagnosis. I couldn't believe at first. But now it's all I can feel. I'm pregnant."

"What?" Clara asked. "She had a baby?"

Liam stared at her terrified. "Jerome?"

Shay nodded her head. "She told me and Joanna it was the night before the game."

"Did she-did the baby make it?" Liam asked.

"We'll have to keep reading." Shay teased.

She continued to read Violet's journal through the evening, until the lights out call.

"Entry 112,
President Snow decided to let me out. He wanted to talk with me one on one. I was served a large meal with a fancy tea. He asked me about Jerome and when it happened, not that it's any of his business. He just wanted to make sure we weren't-" she glanced at Clara "you know," she paraphrased, "during the games."

"Entry 150
It been six months. Half a year. I miss my little girl so much. I wonder how much she's grown. How much she's changed. No one has any idea that I'm pregnant. Even during my Caesar Flickerman interview, they did close ups-"
"That's what she was talking about during the interview." Liam said.

"Entry 201,
I felt the baby kicking again. The guards have sent me three meals a day. Joanna is so envious. I wish I could get her food, but the vents are screwed in."

"Entry 221,
I'm seriously wondering if I'll have a boy or a girl. I don't even know what to name him or her. I've considered Hope, for a girl, but that's also so overused. I really wish Jerome was here with me-"

The lights out alarm went off before they could get further in the journal.
