Just A Kiss
Lady Antebellum
Lyin' - here with you so close to me
Her red hair fanned out as she spun, her hand finding his face. He could have blocked it but the image of her hair, a bright copper halo momentarily distracted him and it took the sting of the slap to break the spell. He stumbled back a step, his own hand finding his cheek.
She wasn't breathing hard, not like Granger had the last time he'd been slapped. In fact, she looked detached, as if it was no concern of hers that she had just hit him across the face for calling her…shit, what had he called her?
He smirked at her, letting his eyes run up and down her body. "Don't act like it's not true," he said, trying desperately to remember.
It's hard to fight these feelin's
When it feels so hard to breathe
"Whether it is or not, I hardly think my love life is any of your concern," she said, her tone even and cold as a frozen lake.
Oh, so that was it. He was giving her a hard time because Potter seemed to have a set of blue balls. Not that he really knew. Potter was off saving the world and he'd left his darling little redhead behind.
"Don't tell me you don't miss cuddling up to a big, strong man," he pointed out.
"Can't miss what you haven't had," she said.
I'm caught up in this moment
Caught up in your smile
That took the wind out of his sails. Girls never admitted that they still had their V card. They were like boys in that regard. They wanted others to think they were so experienced. Having tasted of both ends of the spectrum, he could have told them that it didn't really matter what they said. Guys could figure it out pretty quickly.
He was silent too long and she seemed to take that as an invitation to leave. He watched her go, red hair twitching against a denim top that had been made for someone shorter than her. There was a gap between her shirt and her jeans, a sliver of pale flesh that begged for touching. He wondered what she would be like when someone finally got into her pants.
I've never opened up to anyone
So hard to hold back when I'm holdin' you in my arms
She was sitting in the bleachers, watching her team practice. He knew why she wasn't out there with them but he couldn't help make a comment as he sat down, three rows before her.
She was sipping something from a paper cup and at first he thought she was going to ignore him. He was considering making another comment or whether that would sound too desperate for attention when she looked down at him.
"I'm just here to show support," she said.
"Not trying to get out of detention?"
But we don't need to rush this
Let's just take it slow
He knew she was. She was supposed to be in detention with Filch but for some reason, Filch never seemed to mark her absences.
"It wasn't necessary," she said. "No one told me I had it."
He was sure that was inaccurate but he let it go. Her eyes strayed back to the team where it was practicing and a childish impulse made him want her to pay attention to him again.
Just a kiss on your lips in the moonlight
Just a touch of the fire burnin' so bright
"Aren't you worried that I'm spying on your team?" he asked, turning to face the pitch himself but knowing her eyes were on him.
"Not likely," she said. "There's not going to be a Quidditch season this year. Not really."
He knew what she meant. The whole school year was just a big joke right now. Even he had to admit that it was a mess and not likely to get better.
"Any luck getting lucky?" he asked, wondering if she'd slap him again. He heard her move behind him and he braced himself to a kick to the back of the head. That seemed more her style anyway.
"As if I'm likely to tell you," she said, her breath soft on the back of his neck. He had time for one good shiver before she was gone.
No, I don't want to mess this thing up
No, I don't want to push too far
She was sitting in the library, scribbling at an essay. He knew he should leave well enough alone. They hadn't killed each other yet so it was tempting fate to put himself this close to her again.
She didn't look up when he sat down but her hand moved to the notebook beside her and she wrote a quick line then pushed it towards him. Even upside down, he could read it fine.
Bugger off.
He smiled and wrote his own response, trying to be witty.
She still didn't look up but he saw her smile when she read his answer.
Just a shot in the dark that you just might
Be the one I've been waitin' for my whole life
So, baby I'm alright with just a kiss goodnight
She was at their usual table. It had become a habit and he wasn't sure how. They sat here doing school work and writing notes like delinquent children. He didn't know where it was going, if it was going anywhere. It was just a distraction and he found himself oddly reluctant to make it more than that.
Today he didn't want to stay long. Christmas break was still in his mind and she wouldn't ask about it but he knew he would want to tell her.
She didn't look up but she never did. Her hand strayed to her notepad, covered in their writing from last time. She flipped a page but before she could write anything, he took it from her and wrote one sentence.
Potter says hi.
I know that if we give this a little time
It'll only bring us closer to the love we wanna find
She froze and he turned. He didn't need to be here for this and she didn't need him here.
He got five steps before her arms were around him. It was a quick hug and he barely had time to register it before she released him. He kept walking, telling the fluttering in his stomach to knock that shit off.
It's never felt so real
No, it's never felt so right...
They were running through the woods. He had her hand and she was keeping pace with him. Those long legs of hers made short work of it.
They were going to get killed. He knew it for a fact. He had been so stupid. So, so very stupid.
It was that idiot Potter's fault. Potter had saved his life and asked him to keep an eye on her. How could he say no when that was what he wanted most? A chance to be her hero.
Just a kiss on your lips in the moonlight
Just a touch of the fire burnin' so bright
No, I don't want to mess this thing up
I don't want to push too far
He was unclear where things had gone wrong. She had been unhappy to be fleeing the castle and he wasn't happy to be dragging her through the Forbidden Forest. But the forest was silent and Potter had said he'd have something ready to help them escape.
He should have known that Potter was a dick. He knew it for certain when he saw the hippogryff. It couldn't be the same one, he thought but she cried out. "Bucky!"
"Fuck me," he muttered, letting go of her hand so she could run to the creature.
She cooed over the murderous beast for a moment then turned to him. Her eyes flashed and he knew it wasn't emotion. He turned and saw the strobe lights of spells as someone hunted them. He heard someone laughing and could recognize the voice.
Just a shot in the dark that you just might
Be the one I've been waitin' for my whole life
So, baby I'm alright with just a kiss goodnight
He didn't think. He pulled his wand.
"Get on and get out of here," he said.
No, I don't wanna say goodnight
"I'm not going to leave you," she said.
"Sure you are," he said. "You're needed."
He meant that Potter needed her and she seemed to understand that. She made a face that said she wasn't finished with this conversation and that they'd continue it at a later date but she got on the beast. She probably thought she could cause a distraction and let him escape. She was a bit childish like that.
I know it's time to leave, but you'll be in my dreams tonight
Tonight, tonight
She fisted her hands in the feathers then leaned down. He thought she meant to say something Gryffindorish and encouraging and he instinctively turned his face up towards hers.
Her lips brushed his like a promise.
"Thank you," she said.
He stepped back and slapped the hippogryff on its haunches.
Stupid girl, he thought as she and the beast took off into the night sky. She had nothing to thank him for.
He turned to face the spell lights and rolled his sleeves up his shirt. This would get messy.
Just a kiss on your lips in the moonlight
Just a touch of the fire burnin' so bright
No, I don't want to mess this thing up
I don't want to push too far
Just a shot in the dark that you just might
Be the one I've been waitin' for my whole life
So, baby I'm alright
Oh, let's do this right with just a kiss goodnight
With a kiss goodnight, kiss goodnight
A/N: Just a little bit of fluff to get you through your week. This one goes out to Julie, who asked me (forever ago) to do a song fic for this song.
