Series 2, Episode 58 ~ House of Stooges
Was Camilla surprised when she saw Victor go down to the cellar just after their breakfast the next day - not at all.
Should he have expected her to follow him down – yes, he should have.
The protector followed her guardian step by step, making sure he didn't know she could see him, pausing at the corner that led to the new task challenge and watching him from there. He looked around the room in awe, much like he had done every other room.
"The Falcon..." he muttered causing Camilla to frown, a frown that only deepened when she watched him put a hand into his pocket and produce his old golden pocket watch. Camilla had to cover her own mouth to stop herself from gasping as she watched him put the pocket watch onto the hand the first light beam went onto, the beam of light magically bending around to the next hand in a very unnatural way.
"So, the beam comes into here..." Victor muttered away to himself pointing to the magical light whos purple sparks happily danced around him, "the Falcon somehow bends the light... to form a constellation! Most ingenious Robert!" the glee was something Camilla hadn't heard in Victor's voice many times.
As epic as the magic was, something she was sure Victor would want to study one day, there was only one thing crossing her mind at that moment. Victor had a reflector. For the sake of team Sibuna she needed to do something about it and quick, because if Victor had it then by default so did Vera and that thought chilled her to her very bones.
Camilla knew she should have pushed off the wall and hurried away then and there but Victor was on the move around the room and she wanted to learn more and quickly.
Fabian told her she had to choose a side; so, she was choosing.
Not Sibuna but whatever it cost to protect the ones she loved, that included Victor and if he got too far ahead, she didn't want to guess what the spirit would do either to him or to the Sibuna's for allowing it.
The more knowledge she had, even if it meant getting cobwebs on her school uniform, then the better she could protect everyone. So that is why she stuck around to see what Victor was going to do next.
"clues to the reflectors..." he mumbled his face pressed against a wall in such a way that Camilla couldn't really see what he was looking at. "oh, you are clever Robert," he spoke taking a step back and pulling out the little mini notebook he kept in his pocket to start drawing what he saw, "but no match for me."
Camilla knew this was her time to leave and quietly she pushed off the wall and scarpered back up the tunnels to Anubis house.
Nina and Amber looked up as Camilla came back into their room, the girl needing to change jumpers because her's had cobwebs all over them.
"Been in the tunnels?" Nina asked softly.
Camilla nodded her head as she pulled her jumper over her head, "yeah, I wanted another look at light sphere thing, it's a pretty neat bit of magic from old Frobby. I thought my magic study should happen when we weren't on the Sibuna clock," she added to Nina who smiled understandingly, appreciating that Camilla was being honest with them, or it appeared that way.
Amber, however, couldn't help but laugh slightly at Camilla's nickname for Robert Frobisher-Smythe, after growing up with Fabian who was a stickler for respecting his elders it only made sense Camilla was a bit more relaxed about those things. She was even willing to bet the girl only called Frobisher it just to annoy Fabian to some degree.
"Well, now Cam's back... should we?" Nina asked pointing to the dollhouse.
Amber and Camilla glanced to one another before nodding their heads, the three girls rushing over to it to see if it could help them out anymore with their task.
"We are desperate here Sarah," Nina told the dollhouse, "you've gotta have another clue for us..." once again the dollhouse didn't disappoint as the upper floor window started to glow causing the girls to gasp excitedly and Nina to open the doors to see what clue their friend from beyond had given them.
"I can't believe it worked." Amber gasped softly.
"They are in Sarah's room now," Nina pointed out as they all looked into the dollhouse.
"But that's our room," Camilla added quickly causing the girls to look at her.
"So there must be a reflector in here," Nina nodded as she understood what Camilla meant.
"Well you have all of Sarah's things, Nina," Amber told the girl, knowing if anyone could figure out what of Sarah's it could be it would be Nina who had managed to claim as much of Sarah's things as she could from Trudy before she threw it all out.
Nina paused for a moment, the eyes of her friends on her, as she tried to think of what could be a reflector. "the music box..." she whispered in realisation, before rushing over to her bedside table leaving Amber and Camilla to glance to one another in confusion.
"Music Box?" Amber questioned, glancing to Camilla who shrugged and turned to look to Nina with the same confused expression etched onto her face.
Nina laughed slightly at her friends as she pulled the old wooden music box, she had been working on fixing from the bottom drawer of her bedside table and placed it onto the bed. "Little stars that borrow light..." Nina explained to them both, "twinkle twinkle little star, Sarah's favourite nursery rhyme." she gestured to the box before she opened it to let the two hear the song play. As Amber and Camilla looked at each other finally making the logic leap Nina had the American girl had let out a victorious shout as she noticed that on the mirror there was a falcon symbol, "there it is. Guys, we have our first reflector."
The last double period class of the day was drawing to an end and the only things that could be heard were the scratching of pens on paper and the ticking of the wall clock. They were all sitting a multiple-choice test on Cleopatra and those who had finished within the first hour (Camilla, Fabian and Mara) were all told to open their books and start preparing their quotes for the next day's timed essay on the woman.
"Psst." Jerome hissed, taping Camilla on the shoulder for the fourth time during the Cleopatra test Ms Valentine was making them take.
"No." Camilla finally whispered back, she already knew what he was going to ask.
"Please. Come on, I didn't study last night, and you know that, I was in the library helping your uncle." He muttered, whining a little as he spoke.
Camilla sighed. "Fine." She muttered. "Which question?"
"Uh, one through six...?" He asked, and then secretly held out his hand under the desk. Suddenly a piece of paper was thrust into his hand.
All it said was: 'No :)'
From the sounds of Alfie's snorts, Jerome wasn't too happy about Camilla's response but he should have studied.
"Alright pen's down," Ms Valentine spoke up causing them all to groan slightly, "part 2 of your test will be first thing tomorrow morning, that will be the essay portion so get your quotes written down so you have them."
With that, the bell rang to indicate the end of the school day and the ever-familiar sound of the chairs scraping on the floor could be heard all around as students gathered their things and left the room.
"You are incredibly mean," Jerome spoke up as he walked with Camilla down to his locker, they were going to probably go back to Anubis house via the faulty gym fire door which cut a huge part of the walk-off even if it meant coming back in via the back door, Alfie had rushed off to talk to the Sibuna's so it was just the two of them.
"How am I mean for not giving you test answers?"
"Because you helped Alfie in Geography with that spell pen thing, but you won't help me on your specialist subject," Jerome fake sounded hurt causing the girl to quirk an eyebrow at him.
"Alfie is hopeless with Geography, even when he studies," Camilla countered, "you could have passed with flying colours if you bothered to study for that test, that's the difference."
"I hate to disagree with you,"
"Please! You love to disagree with everyone. It's your favourite thing in the world."
The little argument, though it wasn't really an argument, came to a halt as they both heard the familiar voice of Jasper on the phone in the student hall. The bright smiles that had appeared on their faces at the causal banter both sliding off for two very different reasons. Camilla because she heard the word Collector – someone she knew was up to something and Jasper was somehow involved. Jerome because Jasper was talking about the Frobisher shield, something he had fought way too hard to get back to the school for something to happen to it now.
"Well, absolutely, yes! Yes! The shield itself is a Frobisher heirloom, Collector, but the gem is what's really interesting, clearly Egyptian in origin probably..."
Jasper was interrupted by Jerome as he clearly couldn't keep quiet any longer, recognising as quickly as the small girl next to him that Jasper was striking up some kind of deal. "see something you like?"
Jasper turned on his heel to look at the two teenagers, taken aback by how much Camilla looked like her mother in that moment. A folder clutched to her chest, her eyes on him with an expression like a snake daring him to step forward one step more before striking. Annabeth was always formidable and intelligent to the point you always felt she knew more about what was going on than you did yourself something that had attracted Jonathan to her in their own boarding school days at Amun Academy, and clearly Camilla had inherited that exact same nature.
"Jerome, Camilla!" Jasper spoke in forced cheerfulness at the pair, trying not to look as shocked to see them as he felt. "shouldn't you two be on your way back to your boarding house? It's getting a bit late to be skulking around the school." Camilla noticed he hung up on whatever 'Collector' he was talking to as he spoke to them both.
Jerome and Camilla looked at one another before back to her uncle, suspicion in their eyes as they moved into the room together, "I don't know Jasper, you tell us." Jerome spoke to the man, "one skulker to another two."
"We decided to take the short cut back to Anubis house," Camilla explained to her Uncle, her normal cheerful tone around him clearly not there as they approached the man and the trophy case, "it seems we chose a good day to do so."
"And what short cut is this?" Jasper asked trying to keep the conversation about something other than his phone call.
"via the broken gym door." Camilla and Jerome spoke together dismissively. They weren't going to let this adult try to outsmart them, they knew together they were a lot smarter than people thought.
"were you talking about the Frobisher Gem?" Jerome asked the man.
Jasper instantly did the same thing Fabian did when he was lying, he tugged on the bottom of both his blazer sleeves to adjust them, right one first then left, before looking at them both "eh, nope. Whatever gives you that idea?"
Jerome sent the man a smirk, clearly seeing through the lie, "the words 'Frobisher' and 'Gem'." He told the man simply.
"two words you used, Uncle, whilst staring at the Frobisher Gem on the phone." Camilla backed up Jerome looking at Jasper expectantly.
Jasper let out a small laugh at Camilla's words, though the kindness and humour didn't reach his eyes Camilla noticed. "Okay, you guys caught me. I was talking too... a friend. In Beijing." This was news to Camilla but she couldn't say anything, she didn't know all the contacts her family had but she knew she'd have remembered if there was someone in Beijing, mainly because Fabian was desperate to go to China and if someone in their family knew someone there he'd have made some excuse to go see them. "I was telling him about your sporting victory, Jerome, and he simply insisted I tell him more about the shield," Jasper concluded to the pair.
"Right..." the tone of voice was enough to tell Camilla that Jerome believed the man's story about as much as she did. Which was not at all.
"A Collector, is he?" Camilla asked, trying to sound interested and not at all like she suspected her uncle, "Anyone mum or dad has done dealings with?"
"You two have excellent hearing, yes..." Jasper looked over the two his tone changing from amused to one of annoyance. "but eh, no he only Collects Ming... so not someone your folks would deal with." With that Jasper smiled at the two before leaving the room, leaving two very suspicious students to watch his retreating figure.
Fabian and Camilla had decided to have a twin lunch in the lab and as they walked into study hall afterword's and it felt like chaos had run riot with the Anubis house members and their non-adventuring lives.
"Twins!" Eddie stopped the two as they greeted Patricia who had run off to find joy, "I need some girl advice."
"And your going to Fabian?" Camilla spoke just as Fabian said.
"And your coming to me?"
They both understood him going to Camilla, even if she wasn't the best at understanding girls herself. Decoding Amber – yes. Girls as a whole – nope.
"Are you okay?" Fabian asked slowly to his roommate, as Eddie shot the pair a confused look.
"I kissed Patricia..."
"And now you're a zombie!"
"Yes, team Peddie!"
Once again two different reactions from the twins causing more confusion from Eddie as the three sat down on the couch.
"she's changed," Eddie insisted looking at the pair, who were sharing bemused looks at one another, "she's turning into someone else. It's like it's too... impress me."
"that doesn't sound like Patricia," Fabian spoke up, glancing to Camilla who's shoulder's where shaking in silent laughter. The girl clearly knew something the two boys didn't and Fabian knew they wouldn't get it out of her.
"Exactly." Eddie agreed with Fabian, "I liked her more before... The last time we kissed there was no back chat..." Eddie got to his feet and slowly wandered away not before both twins heard, "she's still the one..."
Before Fabian could question Camilla's, silent laughter which had doubled a little at Eddie's kiss comment as if it had confirmed what she had thought, Alfie had taken the vacated seat of Eddie, "Guys help me! I think Patricia is the one!"
That sentence was all it took for Camilla's laughter to stop and Fabian's eyes widened in shock, not knowing why his sister had stopped laughing so abruptly but boy it couldn't be for good reasons. And it wasn't, something was interrupting her ultimate ship – Amfie – and she was not happy about it.
"or she's decided that I am the one..."
"What?"
"what would be cool Alrisha? Patrafie? Something like that, I mean you two are good with riddles..." as Alfie spoke Fabian got to his feet and gestured to Camilla to do the same. The moment she was he grabbed her arm and pulled her from the room, too much was happening and he needed out now.
"Stay away from me..." he muttered to Patricia as she passed all but running from her with his twin being dragged behind in his wake.
"Thanks, you for not abandoning me," Camilla grumbled as she pulled on Jerome's spare black jumper he had in his bag, hiding her white shirt which had gone slightly see-through due to the fact she was drenched in water, her hair wet along with the rest of her clothes, as was Jerome's but he was in good spirits despite the fact they both were dripping water all over the school corridor's. She had been with Poppy and what was meant to be an afternoon picnic soon turn into Poppy and her house vs Camilla in a water fight, Jerome coming to the girls rescue with the outside hose which caused the Geb house mother to come out and drag all her children back inside.
"Well, it was considered. Came down to a very close vote," he teased opening his locker to grab his PE kit hoping to at least change tops before going back to Anubis house.
Camilla laughed and the boy sent her a smile. Whatever had caused Camilla to push him away had gone, at least at the moment, and he was grateful for it. Some movement down the corridor caught her eye and she frowned, "what was that?"
Jerome turned his head and looked to the student hall along with her, both of them glancing to one another before creeping down to investigate further. They reached the student lounge and the worse thing they could possibly see was there, well maybe not the worst but in Jerome's mind the worse. The case for the Frobisher shield was open and the Gem was missing.
"no...no, no, no, not the gem!" Jerome murmured in worry, "MY GEM!" With that Jerome raced off down the corridor.
Camilla looked around the room once before running after him as he called for Mr Sweet. Something felt off... something wasn't right.
