Thank you to Team Harpy
Chapter 47
Bella
"Excuse, I'm looking for Angela Weber's room." I ask the harried blonde nurse.
"Sorry, visiting hours just ended." She doesn't look at me as she shuffles paperwork.
"You know the thing is… we're family… sort of."
She looks at me then.
"We're related in a way." I press on.
Her brow furrows. "Must be why you look sort of familiar."
"Please. It won't take long, I promise." I smile sweetly at her.
She shrugs then leads me into a private room.
"I thought she'd be more hooked up." I remark.
"We have weaned her medication and she is breathing just fine on her own. Drugs should wear off by morning. Fifteen minutes."
I look at her all prone in that small bed, hair a jumbled up mess under the bandage. An IV port stands to her right with some kind of liquid dripping ever so slowly. She looks peaceful. Boy, what would I give for that kind of peace right now.
"That's weird. I was wondering if I was gonna feel something for you. Well, I… uh… I guess I do feel sorry for you but not much." I reach into my purse and take out my compact. "You know the only reason I came over here was cause I wanted to work out some negative feelings I have for you." I place the compact mirror side up under her nose and am satisfied it fogs up. I snap it closed then throw it back in my purse. "But since you're all doped up, I guess I'll have to settle."
I sit in the chair to her left.
"Here goes. When I first met you, I thought you were the coldest fish I'd ever seen. Then when I heard about your behavior and that the Cullen's let you move in with them, well then I just thought you were plain stupid. Then there's the whole blackmail fiasco. I mean, Angela, really, you must have no pride whatsoever. Going along your merry way when you knew everyone in that house hated your guts so much. I figured this whole attitude of yours must be covering for some major insecurities. I mean, it had too. Look what you were going after; money, status, power. Really, Angela where were your priorities?"
I shake my head sadly.
" You know.. Um… I would never admit this to a conscious person but you wanna know the saddest things of all? My Masen. You were married to the man… sort of… and you never even knew the best part of him."
I get up and walk around.
"I mean, that's how pathetic you really are. You were so stupid to want the worst of him. You could have had such a really great guy if you weren't so wrapped up in yourself. Masen Whitlock was sensitive, caring and loving and you didn't even know he existed. That's why I think I feel so sorry for you. You're so empty. You're so shallow. I can't even bring myself to hate you. I just pity you. Yep, that's all she wrote sister. You are just too pathetic for words."
"I'll show you pathetic you working class moron."
My head snaps up in shock. "Holy smokes." I rush out of the room and drag the nurse back in.
"Her lights were out, you know and then all of a sudden, her eyes popped open and she bit my head off."
"Shhhh. Calm down, please." She leans over Angela. "Angela?"
"I know she was awake. She was totally talking to me and everything."
"Angela."
"She doesn't look so good.:
"Angela. Hey."
"I'm telling you, she was yelling at me and everything."
"Angela?"
Angela shakes herself awake.
"Oh wonderful! Okay tell me your full name."
WIth a defiant glare at me, she says, "Angela Weber Cullen."
"She's lying about the Cullen part." I'm quick to correct with a pointed look at the patient.
"I want this woman out of my room." Angela tells the nurse.
"I think that's a good idea. Stay awake, okay, because I'm going to get your doctor." She starts to escort me out. "You are going to have to go now. Please." Then she shuts the door in my face.
Edward
"Another family meeting? What now?" As I arrived from a long day at the office playing catch up from all the time I've missed lately and I would have worked longer but Grandfather called me and told me to get my butt home. I'm the last to arrive besides Riley but he has class.
"I called this one." Grandmother informs us. "Waylon has just informed me he knows who tried to murder Angela."
We all look at our family butler.
"You do?" James asks.
"Yes sir, I do."
"Get on with it then." Grandfather demands.
"I knew it. It was Edward wasn't it?"
"Get a life, Emmett."
"Don't be afraid, Waylon. You can speak freely here."
He looks gratefully at Grandmother.
"Was it someone in the family?" Father asks.
"Not exactly." Waylon hedges.
"It was Bella." Grandfather exclaims.
"No, it wasn't Miss Bella."
"Of course it wasn't." I scoff.
"James." Mother surmises, who James gives a dirty look.
"No."
"Oh not Alice?" Grandmother is dismayed at the thought.
"No!"
"Then who was it." Grandfather demands.
"Well sir, as a matter of fact, it was me."
Grandmother makes a sound of distress.
"Good heavens, the butler did it."
A couple of us start laughing.
"Oh, Waylon."
He rushes to Grandmother's side. "I'm so sorry, madam. I never meant to upset you. I did it because of you, because you were so unhappy. "
"You tried to poison Angela for me?"
"I know it was stupid. I was blinded by my anxiety for you. I didn't think of the consequences."
"What made you think Mother wanted her dead?" Father asks.
"Apparently he knows me a great deal better than the rest of you do."
"Madam, was very obviously distressed by just the presence of that dreadful woman. I almost killed her with my bare hands the first time she verbally lashed out at her. And that's when I began to consider eliminating her from the premises."
"Nicely put." I grin. "So what changed your mind?"
"Well, the proverbial substance hit the fan. After her birthday party, my more extreme method seemed moot. And may I say sir, what a bang up job you did of dumping her."
"The only bright spot of the entire mess, until now." I laugh.
"Yeah well just when I thought she was nothing more than a bad memory she reappeared and started making threats and demanding meetings and causing Madam more angina than a lady should have to tolerate. So the day of the meeting I whipped up a batch of her favorite drink in its own container."
"Martini with three olives."
"Precisely, Mr. James."
"Oh Waylon this was a very loyal effort."
"But misplaced." Father interrupts Grandfather. "Not to say we didn't all want to be rid of her."
"It certainly took a lot of courage, but Waylon, I had it under control."
"Apparently not, Edward. I think it took a lot of ingenuity." Emmett praised.
"Oh rather heroic I say."
"But rather risky."
"I'm glad Riley isn't here, he'd have a heart attack."
We are all talking over each other but Waylon interrupts.
"It was quite easy but since it seems Chief Dwyer isn't going to ease up on the family so I decided to turn myself into the authorities."
"It does have us in a bit of a twist." Grandfather agrees.
"It's just too bad you didn't finish her off."
"Even so it was ill conceived." He tells Emmett.
"A bit excessive." I agree with James.
"Now don't you fret Waylon, we will provide you with the greatest criminal attorney money can buy. Judge too if I can arrange it." Grandfather assures.
"You're a good man, Waylon." I complement.
"I'll call Phil Dwyer and will arrange for your surrender."
"Ed! Do not touch that telephone!" Grandfather halts in mid pick up. "No one confesses to anything until I've had my say"
We all freeze. Grandmother doesn't talk to anyone like this.
"Waylon, I want to be perfectly clear. I do not condone or approve of what you've done but I will not tolerate hypocrisy."
"Sweetheart, I…"
"Ed look at you all. Congratulating Waylon on a job well done and then throwing him to the wolves. Truth is, he was defending me and I will not sit by idly while he is made a sacrificial lamb."
"What are you saying Mother?"
She looks dead at my father. "If you allow Waylon to turn himself in, I will confess my part as co-conspirator."
"But you weren't." Waylon objects.
"You can't confess to something you didn't do." I point out.
"No? Watch me." She smiles.
"Well what do you propose we do instead?" James asks.
"Well, we do the same thing we do if any one of us gets his knickers in the wringer. We circle the wagons and cover our backsides." Ed declares.
"Why not? We did it with Jason Jenks."
"Oh for God's sakes, the man's been dead a year. Can we finally put him to rest?" James exclaims to me.
"Elizabeth is right. Walyon's loyalty to this family should not go unrewarded. Everyone in this room will keep what Waylon revealed today absolutely secret and we will simply stonewall the police."
"Sounds good." I agree.
"May I remind you what happened last time we tried to cover up a crime?"
I look at James. "This is no time for you of all people to start searching for moral high ground. Now if Angela pulls through and we keep our mouth's shut there is no reason we can't weather this storm as neatly as any other. I for one will remind myself to stay on Waylon's good side."
"How does this sit with you Waylon?" Ed asks.
"Very well, thank you. So can I get anyone anything?"
We all start laughing but stop when we hear the door open and close then footsteps in the foyer.
"Excuse me. I rang the bell but Lonnie didn't answer."
I sit up straighter when I see Bella walk in, beautiful smile in place. It takes my breath away for I haven't seen it in weeks.
"Gee, a family meeting without me. That's too bad because I have some tea."
"As long as it isn't a martini." Mother deadpans.
"Shut up, Esme." Ed growls.
Bella looks at them weirdly then just shakes her head. I see she's getting used to my family's idiosyncrasies.
"Tea, Dear?" Grandmother is confused as we all are.
"Oh, sorry. Slang for gossip. She woke up."
"Who?" Grandfather asks.
"The former, not authentic Mrs. Edward Cullen, that's who. Angela woke up."
We all look at each other. I see Waylon heave a huge but quiet sigh of relief.
"So there we were having a nice little gap fest. With me doing all the gabbing naturally then all of a sudden her lights come on. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes."
"More like a vulture." James retorts.
"This is excellent news!" Grandmother exclaims.
"What a relief!" James wipes his brow.
"Well at least we don't have to worry about a manslaughter charge."
Bella looks at Grandfather and shakes her head. "Haven't you people ever heard of compassion? Or is your life just a series of victims left in your wake shoving them aside just long enough to continue your climb ever upward?"
"She's got us pegged." I shrug. "But Bella, what were you doing visiting Angela?"
"None of your beeswax."
"Well I for one am glad she woke up. I was worried. I haven't been sleeping well." Emmett said.
I look back at him incredulously. "Nice try." He smirks at me.
"I'm simply exhausted. Ed, can you take me up to my room?"
Grandfather takes her chair handles and starts to push. "Thank you for telling us, Bella."
"Don't we all have somewhere to be right now?" Grandmother hints to everyone but me and Bella. Everyone gets up but Emmett. "Now." Grandmother says. He throws his magazine aside and follows her out.
"Looks like it's just us." I smile at Bella.
"As far as I'm concerned, two's a crowd." She gets up and heads for the door.
"Bella, please. Don't go." I plead.
"If you're looking for someone to celebrate your wife's recovering, keep looking."
I follow her out. "You're my wife."
"A mere technicality. In reality, I'm your manager but I am betting that doesn't last too long."
"I am very serious about our music and I am willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen." I assert.
"So you said. You talk a pretty good game to Rose and Alice but this is not a game to me."
"I know. I've done this before. And now that everything is above board, it should be that much easier."
"You've never really had to do it all. But I promise you, there is gonna be no more weaseling out of gigs, no more disappearing acts, no sudden cases of laryngitis that magically appear just as soon as they disappear. From now on you're gonna be where I say, when I say. Personally, I don't think you can take the heat."
"Try me."
"Will I ever." With one last smirk at me, she's gone and I'm left shaking my head at her once again.
Alice
"Alice, I need you to get on the phone with Masen and tell him to come to the studio this afternoon to cover some tracks and then call the guys. I need them all here for rehearsal tomorrow."
"Tomorrow? What kind of notice is tomorrow?" I complain.
"They are just gonna have to make an adjustment. It's been a long time since the band has played together due to the incredibly duplicitous life of their lead singer. I want them to be in top form for their gig Friday night at Mac's." She informs me.
"Whoa. Wait a minute. Mac's? What makes you think that Edward Is gonna agree to play at Mac's?"
"Edward doesn't have a choice. He's got a contract right Rose?"
"Right. And if he breaches it, we will have to work it out in court."
"Yeah, Bensonhurst vs the Cullens, all things being equal of course. Wouldn't you just love it?" She giggles but it's evil. Like horror movie evil. Just this morning she was fitting in yet another interview for Edward on top of his already jam packed schedule. I swear she's trying to kill the guy.
I tell her I'm just gonna go to the Cullen's and tell him. She shrugs and continues to talk to Rose. I decide to walk even though it's getting colder out. I need to think. Even now that things are out in the open, I'm still in the middle. I guess I placed myself in this position but I just want things to work out. Those two just make sense together and I want them to be as happy as I am with Jasper. He tells me I should just leave them be and let them work it out themselves but Bella is one stubborn woman. She's entitled to be as angry as she is and I don't blame her but like Edward said, she is cutting off her nose to spite her face. At least she's stopped throwing things at him so that's a start.
I let myself into the house and find Edward in the den. He's only been going into the office when they need him there choosing to remain close to Bella in case she… needs him? I don't know what he's thinking half the time.
"You know what Bella reminds me of? That drill sergeant guy from An Officer and A Gentleman."
His brow creases with confusion. "Lou Gossett, Jr?"
"Exactly. She has you running from the crack of dawn." I laugh. "You wanna know what time your first appearance is scheduled for? Six am."
He makes a face. "Six am?"
"Yes and you don't stop until after the post concert reception which she was scheduling as I left. And this is just one day."
"Okay. Whatever." He shrugs.
"Okay? And she has you warming up with the track this afternoon and she wants a full rehearsal with the band tomorrow afternoon. Do you wanna know why she's in such a hurry?"
"Because the band is going on tour."
"No. Because she plans on booking you at Mac's Friday night." I tell him hesitantly.
He shrugs again. "Great."
"Great? Did you hear what I said? Mac's. Last time we tried to do this you disappeared off the face of the earth, remember?"
"That was then."
"Are you actually telling me that you are willing to do this?"
"If it's what Bella wants, then absolutely."
"Should I be worried about you?"
"I suppose my new attitude does require some clarification, so listen up. First of all, I am willing to do anything to prove to Bella that my commitment is to this band and to her. So if that means playing Mac's or the lobby of the hotel, then so be it."
"Well you better not let her hear you say that because the only reason you aren't playing in the lobby is because she hasn't thought of it yet."
"Which brings me to my second point. I don't care who listens to me because I have come out of the closet, musically speaking."
"Oh and I'm sure your family is thrilled to no end about that."
"And third, my family is so preoccupied with the whole Angela thing and all their messy lives that I really don't think they have the time or the energy to jeer me on. So playing Mac's presents no problem whatsoever."
He then walks off whistling a tune leaving me as confused as when I got here. These two are going to be the death of me.
Bella
"No problem whatsoever." Mac says cheerfully when I ask him about booking a last minute gig for Friday night.
"Are you sure? Cause I don't usually make a habit of springing last minute gigs on club owners."
"When I said Jasper had an open door policy I meant it."
"Oh, well, I wasn't offering you Jasper. I'm resting his voice until after Austin which thank you for letting him off for those dates."
"Of course, this could be his big break. So did you sign someone new?"
"Remember Masen Whitlock and The Idle Rich?"
His smile falls from his face.
"Oh them. That's different."
"You're absolutely right. They are very different from Jasper but every bit as good."
"That's not what I meant, Bella, and you know it. Last time you booked them here, your lead singer didn't bother to show up."
"That's right, but that was because he was juggling a couple of conflicting lives. Ever since I put the kibosh on that, he has no reason to hide."
"No offense Bella, I mean you are a captivating woman but do you expect me to believe that Edward Cullen is going to throw his corporate image aside, put on some leather pants and kick out the jams in his hometown?"
"In a nutshell, yes, that's exactly what I want you to believe."
"Yeah right." He starts to walk off.
"Not to mention that this place is going to be filled to the brim with every available citizen. Mac, think about what you just said. Edward Cullen. Leather pants. Kicking out the jams. I mean, it's irresistible. We are talking way beyond a concert here. This will be a defining moment in Tacoma history."
"Am I missing something here? I thought you pulled the plug on Edward- both personally and professionally."
"I did and the personal plug still holds. As far as managing his career, why should I pass up the potential money and fame. I mean, I'm a professional. I can rise above any private animosity for the greater good of the company."
"The gleam in your eye gave you away." He smirks.
I grin. " Until now, Cullen hasn't even remotely understood the meaning of the word 'suffer'."
"And you're about to send him back to school, ay?"
"Do we have a deal?"
"Deal. But if he doesn't show up you will have one unhappy club owner on your hands."
"Oh don't worry, if he doesn't you can be a plaintiff in a court of law for breach of contract." I assure him.
"Alright." We shake hands and I talk to Jasper for a bit before I head back home to catch Cullen's warm up session.
I keep my distance and I avoid talking to him. Same with rehearsal, as I question him indirectly through the guys. I can tell he's frustrated but he doesn't push back.
Then it's Friday and as I mark things off of my list, I see the one I saved for last minute. Time to cross that off now.
I smile at Lonnie and he points me in the right direction. They are all in there as per usual. I breeze in like I don't have a care in the world.
"Lonnie told me where to find everyone." I greet them.
"Did he also tell you we are in the middle of a family meeting?" Ed asks me.
"Bella is family!" Cullen and Elizabeth yell.
"Fine. Fine. Please have a seat." Ed offers sarcastically.
"Actually I'm glad I caught you all together. Saves me the trouble of tracking you down individually."
"Bella, what are you talking about?"
"Your big night. You did invite them all to Mac's tonight, right?"
He gulps and I keep the benign smile on my face. "You know...I… we are in the middle of something right now. Can we do this another time?"
"You didn't?" I feign shock. "Why didn't you… I would've thought you'd want your entire family there. Don't worry about a thing. It will be my pleasure. I'm sorry for the interruption, Folks, but I just wanted you all to know that your very own Masen Whitlock is appearing for the very first time as Edward Cullen and will be performing with The Idle Rich some of your favorite rock 'n roll tunes along with some originals and you are all invited!"
"Oh good heavens." Ed hisses.
"Oh, we'll be there." Emmett grins. Everyone else just looks between the two of us.
"There you see, Edward, everyone is going to come. I will have Mac set aside a special table for the family." I make a point to write that down as if it wasn't already a done deal. "I'll let you get back to your little meeting."
And with that I'm gone leaving his presence just a little happier than I was before I got here.
Edward
"Would you mind telling what in the world has possessed you? The last thing this family needs is you galavanting on stage in your leather pants."
"I have commitment. A contractual obligation to BAR Music Management."
"And that supersedes your obligation to this family?"
"They'll sue me if I don't sing tonight. The family doesn't need that either. Besides, it's something I want to do."
"Oh and the rest of us be damned." He storms out of the room muttering a string of insults at my choices.
I just watch him and wonder if my two lives will ever coexist peacefully with Grandfather fighting me on one side and Bella on the other.
***E***
I don't ever remember being so damn nervous about performing. I've almost knocked over most of the equipment multiple times. Bella has glared at me most of the night, not that she needs much reason to do that.
She's currently at the table greeting my family. She's laying it on thick and she smirks as she turns to me and waves before leaving the table and settling at her own just off to my right.
Alice approaches me.
"You okay? You look like you're about to throw up."
I chuckle.
"Maybe just drool a little."
"Okay, now you know this is what Bella wants, right?"
"What's that?"
"She set this whole thing up so you could fall on your face. Now I need you to go up there and show her what you are made of."
I hear Mac's voice over the speakers. "Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome back to another Friday night at Mac's. We are pleased to welcome to the stage one of Tacoma's own, Masen Whitlock and The Idle Rich."
Applause bursts out around the room and I climb up to the stage, grab my guitar and settle in front of the mic.
We as a band decided to do a ten song set mixed with originals and covers. Tonight, without my manager's permission, I am starting with the song that started it all.
"Thank you very much. We'd like to start this off with a special song for a special woman who reached inside me and dug the rock 'n roll right out of my soul." She smiles uncomfortably and stares off into nowhere.
Peter starts it off then Brady takes it up before I start my vocals. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Bella tense up.
I got my first real six-string
Bought it at the five-and-dime
Played it 'til my fingers bled
Was the summer of '69
I work the stage a bit before walking down the stage stairs to interact with the audience, well certain members of the audience…
I stop in front of Bella to sing the next lines, getting closer than I know she wants me to be. But I also know we are in public and she's nothing if not professional at gigs.
Standin' on your mama's porch
You told me that you'd wait forever
Oh, and when you held my hand
I knew that it was now or never
Those were the best days of my life
I move on to the rest of the room then head back on stage to finish the song. Then after the proffered applause, we move on to Linkin Park's Numb which is a personal favorite of mine.
I'm tired of being what you want me to be
Feeling so faithless, lost under the surface
Don't know what you're expecting of me
Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes
Every step that I take is another mistake to you
I've become so numb, I can't feel you there
Become so tired, so much more aware
I'm becoming this, all I want to do
Is be more like me and be less like you
Then we move on to First Time, Halfway There, and another song off our first CD before taking a break and leaping into the newest CD's songs. Entitled 'Apocalypse' for a reason, these songs are dark which is what my mood was at the time I wrote them.
We perform Radioactive, Believer, and Demons before I go a little softer with three new songs. One I sang for Bella in the studio that one night, the other just two weeks ago but this new one she hasn't heard before.
A strangled smile fell from your face
What kills me that I hurt you this way
The worst part is that I didn't even know
Now there's a million reasons for you to go
But if you can find a reason to stay
I'll do whatever it takes
To turn this around
I know what's at stake
I know that I've let you down
And if you give me a chance
Believe that I can change
I'll keep us together
Whatever it takes
She said if we're gonna make this work
You gotta let me inside even though it hurts
Don't hide the broken parts that I need to see
She said like it or not it's the way it's gotta be
You've gotta love yourself if you can ever love me
I'll do whatever it takes
To turn this around
I know what's at stake
I know that I've let you down
And if you give me a chance
And give me a break
I'll keep us together
I know you deserve much better
Remember the time I told you the way that I felt
And that I'd be lost without you and never find myself
Let's hold onto each other above everything else
Start over, start over
I'll do whatever it takes
To turn this around
I know what's at stake
I know that I've let you down
And if you give me a chance
Believe that I can change
I'll keep us together
Whatever it takes
The last chord fades and then it's silence for about ten seconds then applause so rousing that it takes my breath away. We stand on this stage amidst cheering and acceptance from everyone but the one I want it from. But I'll take it. I feel vindicated. Like maybe I can really do this- Be Masen and Edward.
Bella avoids my eyes and appears to be writing down notes in that ratty old notebook of hers. I turn my focus away and thank everyone for coming and that I hoped to see them soon. I approach my family's table and they are clapping loudly as I do.
"Thank you for supporting me tonight. I hope you weren't disappointed."
"Well it won't replace swing but at least you performed it well." That's about as good as I'll get from Grandfather.
"You were expecting an embarrassment."
"Never." Grandmother says firmly.
"I love the leather pants." Victoria grins.
"So do I. Do they come in other colors?" Mother asks me, smiling. She seems sober so that's a win.
"Well, I'm sure they do but these were a gift from my manager and she knows best."
"Edward, you were amazing. I didn't know you had it in you."
I grin at my father. "Thank you."
"You were great. You know if you want to quit Cullen Inc and go on the road full time I'd be happy to take over." Emmett suggests dodging Riley's elbow.
"Maybe when you've grown up a little, I'll take you up on that." I joke.
I notice Bella talking to Alice and Rose and put her notes down in front of Alice, saying a few words before bolting. I run after her but she makes it out the door before I catch her.
"Bella."
"What is it?" She asks as she scurries through the outdoor dining area.
"ALice has my notes." She calls over her shoulder but I manage to grab onto her coat and gently drag her back to me before letting her go.
"To hell with your notes. I was singing for you. Didn't you feel anything?"
"I felt that you needed a little more rehearsal."
"Come on." I plead.
"Okay, what I saw up there was the same lying, manipulative bum that's always been there."
"There was nothing phony about that performance. It was all real and it was all for you. You know it and I know it. You're just too proud to admit that you were wrong about me."
"If you think I'm going to play this game with you again, you are sadly mistaken. Give some thoughts to your career okay. Get back inside before you freeze." She advises before she runs off leaving me behind as always.
I trudge back into Mac's and take a seat at the bar, slumping dejectedly into it. Mac gives a knowing smile and sets a scotch in front of me. I raise the glass to him and gulp it down, hissing at the heat sliding down my throat.
"You did great work tonight, Edward… Masen… whatever your name is." Rose said as she walks out with Emmett of all people. I might give two shits if my own love life wasn't in the sewer. Alice gives me a kiss on the cheek and tells me I did great. I look around the place which has emptied out pretty quickly. A look at my watch tells me it's late.
"Can I pour you another one?" Mac asks.
"Only if it'll help me figure out how to fix things with Bella."
"Well, it takes a lot to understand your husband marrying another woman."
"You're not the first person to make that observation. But there has to be some way to break through. I've tried being sorry, being honest, being angry, even being Masen again. Nothing works."
"Maybe nothing you do will."
"You're a prince."
"Sorry. I gotta go put this money in the safe. I'll see you later." Then he leaves me alone with my thoughts.
And all I can hear is Masen Whitlock telling me what a miserable, pathetic excuse of a human being I am without Bella.
Tell me something I don't know, Pal.
